šŸŽ™ļø When Leadership Becomes Control | Leadership Under Pressure #85
One of the strongest leadership principles taught by Jocko Willink, Leif Babin, and Echelon Front is decentralized command:

A leader cannot control everything.
The people closest to the problem need enough clarity, trust, and authority to make decisions.
It’s a powerful principle.

But what happens when a man believes in decentralized command at work… while struggling to live it at home?

In this episode of Leadership Under Pressure, Mark Odland explores why many high-performing men unintentionally become controlling in marriage, parenting, leadership, and business—and why control is often anxiety in disguise.

Mark breaks down:
āœ… The leadership principle of decentralized command taught at Echelon Front Muster
āœ… Why many successful men unintentionally micromanage the people around them
āœ… How fear and anxiety often masquerade as leadership
āœ… Why over-control slowly destroys trust and initiative
āœ… The hidden connection between uncertainty and nervous system activation
āœ… Why many men struggle to tolerate mistakes, uncertainty, or loss of control
āœ… How fear-based leadership creates dependence instead of strength

This episode is not about becoming passive or disengaged.
It’s about learning how to lead in a way that builds strength, responsibility, and confidence in the people around you.

Because decentralized command is not just a strategy.
It’s an internal capacity.
And if your nervous system cannot tolerate uncertainty…
you will undermine trust even while believing in the right principles.

What is Lion Counseling Podcast?

The Lion Counseling Podcast helps men escape the cages that hold them back and become the Lions they were created to be. It exists to help men obtain success, purpose, happiness, and peace in their career and personal lives. The podcast is hosted by the founder of Lion Counseling, Mark Odland (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified EMDR Therapist), and Zack Carter (Counselor and Coach with Lion Counseling). In their podcasts, they address a variety of topics relevant to men, including: mental health, relationships, masculinity, faith, success, business, and self-improvement.

Mark Odland:

One principle from Jocko, Leif Babin, and Echelon Front that applies far beyond the battlefield is decentralized command. The idea that one leader cannot control everything. People closest to the problem need enough clarity, trust, and authority to make decisions, and that is strong leadership. But here's where this gets personal. A lot of high performing men believe in decentralized command at work, just like Echelon teaches so well, but they struggle to live it at home.

Mark Odland:

They say they want their wife to feel empowered, but they constantly correct her. They say they want their kids to grow in responsibility, but they micromanage them. They say they trust their team, but they hover over every decision. They do not experience it as control. They think of it as care.

Mark Odland:

I'm caring for these people. They think I'm just trying to make sure things go well, but the people around them experience pressure. They experience criticism. They experience a lack of trust. And over time, they stop taking initiative.

Mark Odland:

This is where internal work becomes leadership work because control is often anxiety in disguise. A man may not control because he's arrogant. He may control because uncertainty feels dangerous. He may control because mistakes were costly in his past. He may control because failure seems unbearable.

Mark Odland:

Or he may control because his identity is tied to everything going well. So when something feels uncertain, his whole system tightens. He steps in, he corrects, he takes over, and what does he call it? He calls it leadership. But sometimes it's not actually leadership.

Mark Odland:

It's fear. And fear based leadership does not create strong people. It creates dependent people, resentful people, or even passive people. Decentralized command requires more than a structure. It requires a leader who can tolerate uncertainty.

Mark Odland:

It requires a man who can let others carry responsibility without constantly rescuing or correcting. It requires trust. And trust is not only a strategy. It's also an internal capacity. If your nervous system cannot tolerate someone else making a decision, you'll undermine decentralized command even if you technically believe in it.

Mark Odland:

That's why this principle is so relevant to marriage, parenting, and business. If you want the people around you to grow, you have to give them room to carry the weight. And if you can't do that, it's worth asking why. At Lion Counseling, I have the honor of helping men look at the internal drivers underneath control, underneath anxiety, underneath over responsibility. Not so that they become passive, but so they can lead in a way that builds strength in the people around them.

Mark Odland:

If you're a high performing man who struggles to trust, to delegate, or to let go, You're definitely not alone with going through that, and there is support. You can book a clarity call at escapethecagenow.com. We can test the waters, talk more. Thanks.
