Shalom and welcome, dear listeners. Today, we delve into the wisdom of Rambam, specifically from his seminal work, Mishneh Torah. The text we'll be focusing on is Hilkhot De'ot, Laws of Character, Chapter 1.
In this chapter, Rambam advises us to follow the 'middle path' in our character traits. This means not swinging to either extreme, but rather finding a balanced, moderate approach to life. For example, one should neither be excessively angry, nor devoid of emotion. Each trait, says Rambam, has its place and time.
What a valuable lesson this is for our daily lives! Each of us, in our own unique way, may lean towards one extreme or another. Some of us might be too quick to anger, while others may struggle to express their feelings at all. Yet Rambam advises us to find the golden middle, to balance our traits and use them wisely.
So, next time you feel yourself veering towards an extreme, remember Rambam's advice. Seek the middle path, and in doing so, bring harmony and balance into your life.
May we all strive to balance our traits, to follow the middle path, and in doing so, bring peace and harmony into our lives and the lives of those around us.
