A EPISODE 91: ARRIVE RESOURCE INTRO (DOCUMENTING YOUR OPERATIONS)
Hello everybody. I'm Mike Hernandez, and this video is specifically for independent convenience store owners. I spent 27 years in the convenience store industry, working my way up through the ranks to multi-unit leadership. I wanted to record this video to share some specific resources that I have made available for you and your management teams.
When you own an independent convenience store, you carry a massive amount of responsibility. You handle multiple roles every single day. You are the operations manager, the human resources director, the maintenance coordinator, and the financial planner. Large corporate chains have entire departments dedicated to building training programs and auditing store standards. As an independent owner, you do not have those massive corporate resources. You have to build everything yourself. I started creating these resources because I understand exactly how difficult it is to train your employees while you are actively managing immediate operational crises.
The first resource I want to share is a website I built called cstorethrive.com. I currently have over five hundred and thirty operational training articles on this site. The content covers everything from inventory control and vendor check-in procedures to cash handling and profitability forecasting. Some of this information will be a refresher for you, but for your newly hired store managers and your sales associates, this information is absolutely vital. You do not have the time to build a training curriculum from scratch. You can use this platform to train your staff directly.
I know that you and your employees are extremely busy. You do not always have time to sit in front of a computer and read an article. Because of that, I have added an audio feature to these resources. Your employees can listen to the training while they are stocking the cooler, wiping down the counters, or driving to work. I have made these audio lessons available in both English and Spanish. I have worked in many different locations across the country, and I know that language barriers often prevent employees from getting the professional development they need. I want to completely remove that barrier. If you have employees who speak a completely different language, you can email me at admin@cstorecenter.com. Tell me the specific language you need, and I will translate the content for your staff.
When your employees access certain advanced resources on the site, the system will ask them to provide an email address. I want to be completely clear about this requirement. I absolutely hate receiving marketing emails. I currently have twelve thousand, eight hundred and eleven unread emails in one of my inboxes. I do not have the time to read promotional emails, and I know you do not either. I will never send you or your employees marketing spam. Providing an email address is simply the requirement to access the advanced operational content. It proves they are serious about their professional development.
I also want to introduce you to a podcast series I created called C-Store Legends. I built this series with five distinct levels to cover every position in your store. 'Dive' is for your sales associates who are learning the business. 'Survive' is for your assistant managers, which is the most difficult position because they have to manage their former coworkers. 'Thrive' is for your store managers, so they can stabilize your daily operations. 'Drive' is for district managers who manage multiple locations. And 'Arrive' is for you, the independent owner.
Every single week, I publish an episode for all five levels. Every level receives the exact same operational message, but I tailor the perspective to their specific job title. I also issue a specific weekly challenge. If your entire staff listens to the podcast, your whole team will work toward the exact same operational standard at the exact same time. This gives you immediate topics to discuss when you hold your weekly staff meetings.
During these episodes, I provide a specific code word. When you or your employees text that code word to the provided number, I send a physical training resource directly to the phone. For example, if the weekly topic is vendor receiving, the sales associate will receive a vendor receiving log. They must physically count the items, document the delivery, and have their store manager sign off on the document.
As an owner, this is incredibly valuable for you. These resources create documented proof of work. You no longer have to guess if your store manager is actually training the staff. You can physically look at the completed worksheets. When an employee consistently completes these resources, the best performers will visibly distinguish themselves from the rest of the staff. This allows you to identify exactly who deserves a promotion when a management position becomes available. You will build a highly reliable management team, which will ultimately allow you to step away from the daily operations and focus entirely on the financial growth of your business.
I have a massive amount of content currently available, and I am utilizing technology and AI to build even more resources for the future. Please share cstorethrive.com with your store managers and your sales associates. Let me provide the training so you can focus on maximizing your profitability. If you have any specific operational questions or suggestions for future topics, email me at admin@cstorecenter.com.
I close every episode the same way — 'Happy Learning.' Those two words aren't filler. They represent everything I believe about development. Learning shouldn't be punishment. It should feel like possibility.
