The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

A couple of notes on an almost accidentally iconic disco track along with the incredible live album it appeared on, then we get into the new faves, pop, and Korean indie that makes the annoyances of Mondays worthwhile (most of the time).

Show Notes

As broadcast September 26, 2022 with new tunes aplenty in tow.  Tonight we mark a date that a very important live album was recorded at London's Palladium, which became Marvin Gaye's iconic album from 1977.  We also noted some interesting facts about the only studio recording from the album "Got To Give It Up," which appeared right at the end of the live album.  After that, it's huge new music all the way to the end with the exception of Yumi Zouma, who are in the spotlight for our upcoming concerts, as they do their first live on Wednesday up in Seoul at Rolling Hall.  New cuts galore from Channel Tres, Alex G, The 1975, Sure Sure, and Broken Bells to dig into first hour, and then we had some big new pop tunes in part 3 with Khalid, Sam Smith, and 5SOS all out with new joints.  To finish properly in part 4, we covered some of the notable new & recent Korean indie that dropped this month, with Han All, GAYUN, and HANRORO being highlights.

It is 20 hours past midnight and another Monday is upon us which generally speaking is a bad thing, but no stress here unlike the rest of your day as we get out the tiny vacuum to get the dirt of your proverbial shoulders, this particular mini chapter in historical memory being September 26, 2022. Danno here as always on the mic in studio 2 at GFN between 8 & 10 like I do, how do you do? As always a busy Friday of new music is behind us, and we have a lot of new things to unpack in hour 1 with MorMor, Nilufer Yanya, and Khruangbin being highlights in a strong playlist. Hour 2 of course, we have more to explore, with part 3 being our pop focus ending off with our very new Korean indie segment to end things in part 4for this evening’s programming. Right now though we go back to 1976 on this day at the Palladium in London with Marvin Gaye, and we’ll talk about everything after the sounds have died down. This is The Drop.
Marvin Gaye – Got To Give It Up
The Drop is back at it for another work week of workin it here on the air, and we of course thank you for joining us whether live on the radio or later with the streamers. It is as always our New Muses Monday here, and I’ll be doing this solo going forward for the full two hours on Monday night.
As to what just went up in the space elevator in order to sate the history gods, that was Marvin Gaye with Got To Give It Up, released in 1977 on Marvin Gaye Live At The Palladium. The rest of that album was recorded on this date at the famed London venue in 1976, and this tune was the only studio original work to feature on the album not recorded that night, with the full 11 minutes of Got To Give It Up being the final song on the otherwise live LP.
Marvin Gaye of course was a total superstar at this point and one could argue at the very tippy top of his popularity, so obviously a smart move by Motown Tamla to put in the production effort and costs to record him live in London where he was extremely popular as well.
Now, much more interestingly is that this song was part of a long process involving the label trying to convince Marvin Gaye to record a disco track, but Marvin resisted. Got To Give It Up was about as close as they could come, which was The Prince of Soul actually making a parody of a disco setting with this song, and not fully agreeing in the end to do a disco song. Even so, it went straight to #1 upon release as a 12” maxi single, becoming a disco classic.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
So moving along, let’s start with our new muses for this week’s showcase, and we have new rather upbeat bidness from MorMor and then we have tunes from Divino Nino and Channel Tres to bump, all of which we’ll talk about after the throwdown. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
______
Back on The Drop with the verbal stuff after the magic and rhythm. It is our New Muses Monday and with our dance friendly opener to start, I thought we’d keep it rolling a bit in the first block there.
Now, as to what just went up & back in the radiological space elevator, we just had our first trio of new cuts to taste test right there, so let’s get the damage report…
MorMor – Chasing Ghosts (…for those that were paying attention to the dreamier realms of indie and bedroom pop in 2019, you will have definitely noticed this Toronto-based artist’s Heaven’s Only Wishful along with the Someplace Else EP’s, which were released in 2018 & 2019 respectively. There have been a smattering of singles since, but now we have official announcement of an album, which is called Semblance and drops Nov 4.)
Divino Nino – Ecstasy (…this is from an album that just dropped on Friday that we here at Drop Central have very much been awaiting. The Last Spa On Earth is the title and getting generally positive reviews, so definitely go check in full if you liked that number from the Latin Chicago band.)
Channel Tres – No Limit* (…one of the biggest names in deep house and underground over the past few years has been Channel Tres, and this tune hails the arrival of his new album later this fall called…let’s say Real Cultural Tish. Haven’t played a ton of his music here on the air due to the almost inevitable foul language, but we cannot recommend this artist highly enough.)
So moving towards the end of the first quarter of our nightly game of audio mirrors this evening, we have new tunes up next that are quite the quick hitters, so we’ll rock three. First up is Nilufer Yanya with Rid of Me, which is a PJ Harvey cover released as just a standalone single. Then to follow that we Sleater Kinney & Courtney Barnett out with a collab track called Words & Guitar, which is a covers album dedicated to their 1997 Dig Me Out. Dig Me In: Dig Me Out Covers Album is out Oct 21 and features covers from St. Vincent, Wilco, and The Linda Lindas amongst others. To finish the first fourth though, we head into the jump with Monet Ngo and a cut called Summer Wind, and that’s gonna be it for part 1. THIS is The Drop on your Season Premiere New Muses Monday night.
Nilufer Yanya – Rid of Me (PJ Harvey cover)
Courtney Barnett – Words & Guitar (Sleater-Kinney cover)
Monet Ngo – Summer Wind

Back at it with the slow vibes after the jump and we are into part 2 of The Drop on this Monday evening. Bit of a new format we’re going with on Mondays in case you missed it last week, as we’re now focusing on concerts coming up in Korea that you might wanna check out, and then we have Korean indie for all of part 4 to showcase. At any rate, that was...
Alex G – Immunity (…just dropped Friday is the man formerly called Sandy Alex G’s new album called God Save The Animals. Very highly rated upon release, this would Alex Giannascoli’s most hopeful album to date, and career 9th. Very good record for those of you that like the texture rich.)
The 1975 – All I Need To Hear (…this is the 4th single from the band’s upcoming fifth studio album Being Funny In A Foreign Language, which is due out October 14th, and clearly a lot of the expat audience listening here in Korea can identify with that title.)
Pod, socials, etc…
So, let’s keep dreaming in slow motion for the next block and we have three really good joints to check out. First up is Sure Sure with Lonely One and then we have Khruangbin and Broken Bells as well before we get into the concert focus to close the first half tonight. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday evening.
____
Back on The Drop here as we stretch towards the finality of this evening’s first half. Danno as always ready steady go from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju. Just finished our very new favorites for this week’s first hour, so let’s go to the audio confessional…
Sure Sure – Lonely One (…this is the title track to this California band’s latest album which just dropped Friday. It’s basically a melding of the two quite short EP’s previously released in FACC and 123, but obviously there’s a bit more to it than that with original material, like this ker-thunk you just heard. Very good band, look out for this crew.)
Vieux Farka-Toure & Khruangbin – Diarabi (…another album that’s out as of Friday is the Houston outer rim trio of Khruangbin teaming up for a tribute album to Ali Farka-Toure called simply Ali. On the album the band team up with Ali’s son Vieux for a spaced-out, updated take on some of Ali Farka-Toure’s works from long ago, as he is still rated amongst Africa’s best guitarists of all time.)
Broken Bells – Love On The Run (…now this is from an album that is not QUITE out just yet, but drops Oct 7 titled Into The Blue. For those unaware, this is the project of Danger Mouse and James Mercer, the lead singer for The Shins.)
Alright so it’s time to highlight a big act that is on the way to Korea and this Wednesday sees Kiwi darlings Yumi Zouma make their first appearance in Seoul at Rolling Hall. We’ll play a couple of tunes off the PRESENT TENSE LP from this year, with the lead tune on the album going first called Give It Hell, and we’ll finish with Where The Light Used To Lay. THIS is The Drop and we are at halftime.
Yumi Zouma – Give It Hell

5 Seconds of Summer – Bad Omens

BAMSOOSUNG – Swimming In Stars

Part III: New Pop

Khalid – Satellite
- A very new song and spacey video is out as of this weekend from r n b superstar Khalid.
- The artist says of the song & accompanying video, “it’s a visual portrait of my growth as a human being and the self-love journey I have experienced in my life.”
FLO – Not My Job
- This is the first single from the UK-based female trio after their debut over the summer with The Lead EP.
- Not My Job is all about skipping the needless stress and anxiety that people put upon you, especially when it’s just not your responsibility.
Sam Smith feat Kim Petras – Unholy
- This is undoubtedly a stylistic change for Sam Smith as it is way dark, but listeners in a Billboard poll absolutely loved it, bringing in nearly half of the vote for best new song of the week.
- This tune is the latest single to drop from Smith’s upcoming fourth studio album, which is still yet to be announced as far as title and release date.
Q – Stereo Driver
- Just for a note, this is not the fictional government insider predicting the storm nor is it the schoolboy.
- Q is from South Florida, and had a breakout 2021 with The Shave Experiment LP, with Take Me Where Your Heart Is becoming a viral smash hit. This would be the artist’s first works released since then, but nothing larger announced, so just a standalone for now.
SiR – Nothing Even Matters
- This is the latest single from the upcoming Heavy LP, which will be out December 13.
- As to the album as a whole, the artist says it has a lot of thematic similarities with Kendrick Lamar’s latest, which deals heavily with mental health and finding one’s self.
Maya Hawke – Luna Moth
- For those unfamiliar with the artist, Maya Hawke is a musician and actress from the states.
- This weekend saw Hawke release their 2nd studio album Moss, which is the follow-up to the 2020 breakout debut album Blush, which like this one is getting pretty great critical reception.
5 Seconds of Summer – Bad Omens

Part IV – Fresh K Cuts

BAMSOOSUNG – Swimming In Stars
- Just released earlier last week on Tuesday is this standalone single.
- Not a lot more as far as info on this budding artist, but lovely arrangement on this tune and she has a very nice voice. If you have more info, hit us up!
Han All – You Know Everything
- This is a tune that featured on a 7” single from the artist, but again, very little biographic information here aside from that.
- The mini EP or double single is called Someone’s Playlist #8, if you wanna run that down.

entoy feat suru – Blue Mood*
- This is a standalone single from entoy, who are a couple of budding producers based up in Seoul.
- Here they team up with suru for the vocal side of things, and both are budding artists still so not a lot beyond those things biographically.

GAYUN – DOONGDOONG
- This is some solo work from Kim Ga-yun as properly named. For those who are big K-pop fans she’s probably a known commodity to you, as GAYUN normally is part of the girl group Rumble-G.
- Very budding artist on both the group and solo side, having just signed professionally last year.

HANRORO – Don’t be afraid to fall
- Another artist just starting to come up and do her own thing is HANRORO, and if that sounds like I was struggling with it, it’s not an easy name to pronounce.
- Not a lot of biographic info here, but this tune dropped as a daring standalone single earlier this month.

JOO SEOL OK – I wanted to be loved
- Now, in a rather rare bit of business here in South Korea, this is a 100% independent artist that records under her given name is based in Seoul.
- Not a lot of discography here, with this song being the first release since debut two years ago on a song called More Than I Am.

Able – How long will it take to forget you?
- Not to be confused with the four member boy band of the same name formed in 2010, this is a female soloist who just made her debut this year with four singles, but has definitely made a mark with a TV credit, with a song released in August called Flutter appearing on the Secret Lovers Pt 2 soundtrack.
