Clydesdale Media Podcast

Every day we take a breath from the busy work day to get a break hang out with friends and talk about the world of Sports, Entertainment, and specifically CrossFit.  Today we finish up our recap of Crash, talk about some rumors, do you need a chip on your shoulder, and Then we will look at the new marketing campaign coming from CrossFit Today.

What is Clydesdale Media Podcast?

We cover the sport of CrossFit from all angles. We talk with athletes, coaches and celebrities that compete and surround in the sport of CrossFit at all levels. We also bring you Breaking News, Human Interest Stories and report on the Methodology of CrossFit. We also use the methodology to make ourselves the fittest we can be.

When I say things on this show,

I never, ever know who's listening.

Every once in a while,

I get a clue.

Let's talk about it.

I love the chase and the hunt and

I set the pace when I'm running.

I always take what I want and I

always give it one hundred.

Don't need a bank, no I'm funded.

Play the game like it's nothing.

I'm always thankful for something.

Don't take for granted, stay humble.

Now wake up!

It's time to look at the enemy.

Look in the mirror if he is no

friend to me.

What is going on everybody?

It is lunchtime.

Lunch with the Clydesdale.

Here we go.

Going to get things kicked off today.

It is a victory Monday.

As you can see,

I am garbed out in full Bears gear.

Four wins in a row.

Haven't seen that since two thousand

eighteen.

I have no idea what this is supposed

to feel like.

So I'm just like chilling, relaxing,

enjoying and just can't wait till next

week.

See if we can put five together.

So we got Corey in the house.

We got Trent Olive in the house.

Megan got swept up in the Amazon server

debacle this morning and her workout app

is down.

Anyone want to share their workout?

Trent Olive came up with three, six, nine,

twelve, fifteen, eighteen,

twenty one box jump overs,

three wall walks after each set.

That is rough.

Rough.

Corey Leonard,

I learned y'all should listen to me when

I tell you Sammy Pugh is going to

be top five.

I think you said more than top five,

but okay.

Way to kind of like refine that in,

in your story there, Corey.

But I'm sure we'll talk about that later

this week.

We've got Arlene.

We've got Ken at the lab.

We've got Jody, Megan.

We've got Lito.

What's going on, Lito?

We've got Jake in the house.

Wow, cool.

So what I'm going to kick off with

first is my cold open was that you

say things you never know.

You never know who's listening.

If you were with me at the beginning

of last week,

there was a clickbait advertisement for

the Rich Froning podcast.

I watched all ninety minutes of that and

I made the statement that it was a

waste of time.

And what I meant by that is it

didn't match the clickbait.

Still interesting conversation.

Still good guys hanging out.

But nothing met what was promised in the

clickbait.

And so I said it was not worth

watching.

Andrew Hiller clicked that,

or Dense Updates clicked that.

Somebody did.

And Rich released another podcast this

morning.

I don't know if you guys saw that.

And what is the title?

A waste of your time.

A waste of your time.

So apparently,

Rich heard what I had to say,

either through the clip or through the

show, or maybe Scott Vandersloot heard it.

But I think that was a shot fired

back at me.

So what I'll say today is...

What I'll say today is it was a

fun listen.

If you're looking for any kind of news,

this is not the podcast for you.

It's more about Darren, Austin,

and Rich talking about the good old days,

how they promoted the sport back in the

day.

Is there a way to go back to

any of those things?

So not a complete waste of your time

this week.

But if you're looking for news,

this isn't the one for you.

This is just a fun, entertaining podcast,

and go check it out.

But when I saw that I actually took

a big gulp, like, oh, shit,

what did I...

Did I upset Rich and crew?

But interesting to see that they took my

statement and...

entitled it what i said last week so

um very very interesting uh today's show

is not going to be super long um

i have an appointment that i have to

get to uh so uh joseph yeah what's

up scott penn state's in a downward spiral

um

Yeah, I can't even talk about it.

It's a free fall at this point.

I'm just I'm just done with college

football, at least for this season.

We'll see who the new hire is.

We'll see what goes on there.

But I am just I'm just I can't

anymore.

Yeah.

It was a fun listen.

The, the, the rich running podcast,

super fun listen.

And actually the title waste of your time.

They don't even,

they don't even address it.

Um,

they don't even address the title in the

show.

Um,

Corey,

I don't think you can compare what LSU's

downward spiral is to Penn State.

We are losing to teams that don't even

win games.

It's just Billy Napier's available.

Yeah,

there's a lot of firings happening this

year and way early in the season.

This new NIL college football thing is

getting out of hand.

Totally, totally out of hand.

I think for one reason or another,

people assume what CrossFit media is

always circling around breaking news.

I've enjoyed listening to shows without

breaking news recently.

The HQ shows are awesome.

So what I'm saying, Jake,

is not that I expected Rich to break

news.

Only for the fact that they did a

clickbait reel where they talked about the

affiliation,

where they talked about what happened at

Coaches Congress.

in the real but when you get into

the video they did not every time they

broached one of those subjects someone

interrupted them and they went off on

another direction and i believe it was

planned i believe it was strategic and so

that's what i was saying it was a

waste of time i like shows for

entertainment as well so um yeah

Eric Mackey, NIL is awful,

will have even worse effects three to five

years down the road.

Here's what I think it's causing is people

are leaving for the money.

People aren't showing the...

People aren't showing the grit and

determination to fight for a job anymore.

And they're getting paid millions of

dollars to leave one school and go to

another.

And I believe priorities are out of whack.

And that is not creating the best human

beings.

And it's not creating the best athletes

for the NFL.

And so it...

It's giving other factors that are going

to be determining whether someone gets

drafted or not,

whether the way they look at things,

it's going to be crazy.

Yeah, Jake,

they learn clickbait gets numbers.

Is it the NIL or the portal?

Yes.

Phil to pooper.

It is.

It is that.

During the Mayhem podcast,

I was super curious why the Buttery Bro

was there and they never addressed it,

but it felt significant.

Maybe not.

I don't know.

There's been a lot of criticism with the

Media Hill that the Buttery Bros have not

done anything CrossFit for a year.

So I'm wondering if they're trying to get

their way back in.

I also know Mayhem's hiring a media

director.

So...

I don't know.

I don't want to make up a smear

campaign or make up news,

so I'll just leave it at that.

But it was interesting that the Buttery

Bros were there.

But I know that they're tight.

Like, Heber did Froning Four,

the big documentary.

That was Heber's baby.

So they are tight.

I know that they are close.

And it makes sense that they're there.

I guess I didn't really think a lot

about it.

So...

Yeah, I think you're right.

Aaron Frazier,

the simplification of the game,

because you don't have players for four

years is really happening.

So

get it most people don't enjoy the boring

stuff the gym stuff and that's cool for

us guys there are outlets i i agree

jake you're you're awesome at the gym

stuff and getting into those things and

that's why i watch you guys um problem

is you're on so early in the morning

for me i have to watch it after

the fact i wish i could catch more

of them live

All right, so let's hit the next thing.

CrossFit released their new marketing

campaign.

We talked about it on last night's show.

And my worry was that were they going

to focus too much on elite athletes or

were they going to focus more on the

everyday gym athletes?

goer and,

and the coaching and all of that.

And I was pleasantly surprised that I

think they used forging elite fitness in a

way that makes sense and, um,

and speaks to people out there.

Now we talked last night that there are

people that want the easy, easy way out.

They don't want to put in the hard

work and there is no way that you,

um,

can get results without putting in the

work.

And I love the way that they have

done this to kind of push that button.

So I'm going to go ahead and play

it for you guys.

If you have not seen it,

here is the new marketing campaign just

hot off the presses at like noon today,

Eastern time.

It was just released.

So here we go.

It all starts with a choice.

You don't feel strong.

You don't feel ready.

Good.

You showed up.

That's the only starting point.

This isn't about perfection.

It's about the fight.

Failure?

It's not a detour.

It's the road that progress demands.

We don't ask, are you able?

We ask, are you willing?

Willing to walk through the door,

to turn fears into fuel,

to keep showing up again and again.

The true test has never been ability.

It's willingness.

So there you have it.

CrossFit's newest marketing campaign,

Forging Elite Fitness.

Again,

my hope was that they weren't going to

lean into the elite athlete because some

of the pictures that were coming out

before this yesterday showed some of the

elite athletes.

And I love that this was at the

root of the community in the gyms.

And it's about,

are you willing to show up?

Are you willing to show up?

and show up day in and day out.

And it is awesome.

Love it.

We've got so good.

This is so good.

Jake, I don't know whose voice it is.

It's nobody that I recognize.

i've been doing crossfit for almost eight

years and this even fires me up um

jake says good uh autistic killer forging

elite fitness ad was awesome they nailed

it the sound of the anvil at the

end lined up with the fist bumps it

was so sick and the sound of the

forge yep uh lito says the hammering

sounds like at the end like a chef's

kiss uh really cool goosebumps

Uh,

Jess says I've been doing CrossFit since

two thousand twelve and this is so fire.

I just want to get out of bed

in the morning and take care of my

kids.

CrossFit is the best way I have found

to do it.

Decent commercial.

Trish, not a dry seat in the house.

Jake,

I've been doing CrossFit since nineteen

seventy six and this fires me up.

Well, OK.

Might be a little over the top there.

Wearing my Forging Elite Fitness hoodie

today, ironically.

This is outstanding.

Trish wants the booty shorts back.

Train Olive, big fan, fired up.

and i've been waiting for this says ortega

i heard they were doing this ad and

i was so pumped yeah it's really really

good um so super pumped that they did

not lean into the elite athlete super

pumped that it's about the community and

the people in the community um i really

think they did a nice job with it

i'm so pumped

Trish,

really do want some Forging Elite Fitness

merch back.

It was at the games.

They've brought it back.

I believe it's out on their website still.

They brought back Forging Elite Fitness.

They brought back Routine is the Enemy.

And they brought back Pukie the Clown all

in merch at the games this year.

So, yeah, really pumped about this.

I think it's awesome.

And then...

just to show on their Instagram yesterday,

they put out some pictures and they were

some of the more elite athletes,

but the ones they have pinned to their

story or pinned to their homepage are all

the community athletes, um,

forging elite fitness right there.

So very, very cool.

Trish says, I missed it.

I was blinded by immediately buying the

pukey shirt.

Yeah.

A summer pump.

Scott is jazz.

They are not the same.

They're not.

I am jazzed.

So yeah, nice.

Um, nice marketing.

Jen is doing an outstanding job.

I think Corey said it last week on

our show.

Uh, she needs paid.

Uh, what she's doing is awesome.

And, uh, Jenna needs pay the girl.

Let's go.

Uh, so that I also wanted to, uh,

do a little bit more wrap up on

crash.

Um,

It wasn't long ago people were telling me

affiliates in CrossFit didn't need any of

this with normal folk and that the sport

was the way to go.

Interesting.

I don't ever think that the sport was

the way to go.

I think there's a way to use both.

But I think if the pendulum swings too

far to one side or the other,

I think you're at risk of losing people

on both sides.

So that's what they have to be careful

of.

Trish,

Jenna will get snagged away by another

brand for more money if they aren't

careful.

Turning a brand around that is owned by

private equity is a big deal.

She can point to the numbers.

And CrossFat says he agrees.

And I do too.

Yeah.

And the one thing you can see with

Jenna is if you follow her on Instagram,

she's living the life.

She's doing CrossFit.

She's doing it.

And when you see it means more when

you're creating this message

Because you're in it.

You're in it with everybody else.

And it helps you understand it.

And therefore,

that you can convey that message better to

the community because you're with them

every single day.

Uh, Jake, yes, totally agree.

And people have been telling me it would

be a waste of time.

I love this campaign.

I do too.

I do too.

And as I said last night on our

show, if I want fitness,

I want the best fitness I can get.

If I'm putting in the effort and the

time and I want to get the best

thing that is going to turn my fitness

around.

And I,

that means I want the elite fitness.

I don't want a second-rate Teemu fitness.

I want elite fitness.

And I love that they're sticking with

forging elite fitness.

I think that is what makes the most

sense.

I just didn't want it to be a

full lean-in to elite athletes.

I think you can sprinkle them in with

the people we saw in this ad campaign

because we can all get the same stimulus.

We can all get the big turnaround.

And I think with athletes like Dallin and

Justin diving back into the community and

doing community events that that is where

Jake, it can be worked together.

when you see it endorsed by the elite

athletes and they're a part of it,

then it's, it, it,

it rings louder than if it's just some

people at the affiliate,

but it has to be,

it has to be hand in hand walking

down and,

and not swinging the pendulum one way or

another too much.

Lita says,

I think the problem is what Carolyn

mentioned yesterday.

It's hard to convince people that CrossFit

is elite fitness.

If you don't tell them it's CrossFit,

they'll do it.

I do think it's a problem.

And I don't think it's that people think

they can't do CrossFit.

I think people don't want to do fitness.

I think they're looking for the easy way

out right now.

Every other ad is about, hey,

take this shot and it'll make you healthy.

which is a bold faced lie.

It doesn't make you healthy,

it makes you skinny.

Those are two different things.

That drug was developed for people who

have a specific issue to help them get

things working correctly.

It was not designed as a weight loss

drug.

And then people were diving into it and

they think that this is making them

healthy just because they're skinny.

Skinny is not healthy.

And maybe that's what we have to get

into and convince people.

You can't convince people CrossFit is

elite fitness if they don't believe

CrossFit's definition of fitness.

we said this last night,

Tristan on the show too.

Like when I,

when I started CrossFit in two thousand

eleven,

I lost two hundred and fifty plus pounds.

Everybody asked me how I did it.

And I said,

I did it through hard work and a

good diet.

And then people said, well,

that's not for me.

I would.

I'm waiting for the pill.

Those people,

you're never going to get into a gym

regardless.

It's just crazy.

autistic killer.

There is definitely a danger in leaning

too far to the elite side and isolating

people.

But this ad is redefining what it means

to be elite, not as ability,

but willingness.

It straddles the line perfectly.

I, I think you're right.

We are seeing HQ show people what CrossFit

actually is.

It's awesome.

I know.

Even though it's right,

if they don't believe it,

you can't convince them.

How many members at the gym know what

the sickness, wellness,

fitness continuum is?

I don't know, Jake,

but I'd say that I talk about that

continuum at least once a month.

train all of it's also a mindset just

when I think I'm super fit I watch

the elites and remember I am just mediocre

that makes me push harder well I hope

um I hope you don't think you're mediocre

because you're still probably in the upper

five percent of the world um but I

get I get the chip and why you

need the chip

Uh, Hiller,

it's a terrible Instagram post.

Uh,

I'd love for you to expand on that

and I'm sure you're going to at some

point.

Um, I like the campaign,

but I'm sure you have a reason why

it doesn't work as an Instagram post.

Um, one,

if you don't capture somebody in the first

five seconds, you've lost them.

So I'm thinking that's it.

And that glitchy thing at the beginning,

uh, is probably, uh,

Um, not capturing somebody right away.

It's kind of old.

Um,

cause that's why I started doing cold

opens on the show.

Um, having a theme song play first,

doesn't capture anybody,

but maybe two lines promoting my episode

will.

And so I'm trying to get better at

cutting out the fluff at the beginning of

all of my stuff.

So I think,

and then Lito says it's not in portrait

mode.

It's like the Hiller game show now.

Try to figure out why Hiller says what

he says.

I am not addressing anything, Frank.

Moose, not doing that.

And train all of them motivated by

self-deprecation.

Got to give yourself a break occasionally,

though.

Hiller fit always has been.

Nice.

That's a nice catchphrase.

So, yeah.

I like the sentiment.

Maybe a better...

uh, maybe a better post,

but I do like the sentiment of the

ad.

I'd like the footage in the ad.

Um,

I can't wait to hear what Hiller's going

to say about this.

So tune into his channel.

I'm sure he's going to have a reaction.

All right.

Last thing crash.

Uh,

A couple things I want to clear up

from.

Oh, look at the comments.

Man.

Crash may be tomorrow.

Whoops, wrong thing.

Sorry.

There we go.

And Hiller's comment in the ad is okay.

Now what?

So there you're saying, okay,

now you're motivated.

There is no action item during this post.

Now I see what you're saying.

What is the action item?

How do you get to a gym?

How do you sign up?

Where do you go?

Where's the affiliate map?

Where's, how do I get to an affiliate?

I, now I get to what you're saying.

So, all right, I gotcha.

Jake says, I guess Google got taken down.

They were having server issues at Amazon

today.

It's taken down a slew of sites.

Even at my work, we've lost some servers.

Some have come back.

We'll see what happens.

All right.

Last thing with crash real quick.

The one thing that I'm really stoked about

that Crash did and the broadcast team did

is they found a way to show multiple

athletes at the same time.

Um,

the picture and pictures done in the

corners was awesome.

The split screens were awesome.

For the first time,

a broadcast team has taken into account

that there may be a race that's not

just in the middle lanes.

And they gave us the opportunity to see

multiple athletes at the same time and

found creative ways of doing it.

And I want a huge,

huge shout out to them.

Um, and a huge kudos to, um,

to Sousa for coming up with some of

those.

What a freaking amazing piece of that

broadcast that I know Jamie and I have

been bitching about for years.

um that has been my biggest bitch at

most of these crossfit competitions is not

being able to see the race that they

get stuck on one lane but here they

found a way to show multiple athletes at

the same time and creative ways of doing

it and huge kudos go out because that

has been

that has been my biggest bitch for five

freaking years.

And they finally, finally, um,

finally figured it out.

And, um,

This is why I get pissed at like

Hamilton roads because they don't do

anything to change.

It's the same broadcast.

It was in two thousand twelve.

The same type of footage,

the same camera angles.

What Savon and his crew did yesterday came

up with new angles,

new ways of showing things.

It was a crystal clear picture.

Nope.

Depixelations.

It was awesome.

And they also featured more athletes by

doing after heat interviews,

sitting down with people.

It was really, really cool.

Lito says it's easier with five to six

people in a heat though.

It's not, if you're doing,

if you're doing picture and picture

things,

you just send the cameraman to the lanes

that are in the race.

That's it's simple.

It's simple.

So, um,

That is what I truly loved about the

broadcast this weekend is that has been a

major problem and they found a way to

fix it.

If they can do picture in picture,

then Hamilton Road should be able to do

picture in picture for what they're paid.

It's just getting a cameraman in different

lanes.

That's it.

Find out where the race is,

get the cameraman in those lanes and

follow those people so you can see all

of them at the same time.

That was awesome.

The other thing I loved about the weekend

was, Lito, I don't like heats of twenty.

That's just dumb.

But even in a heat of twenty,

if you know that these three or four

people are in the race,

that's where you get the cameraman to and

you split the screen so you can see

all of those people.

You don't have to have them side by

side anymore.

The way they did it is they did

it in picture in picture where you can

go to the different lanes and they show

up on different parts of the screen and

you can see the whole thing.

The other thing I loved is all of

the behind the scenes.

Whether it was Hiller,

whether it was Glinton Things,

whether it was the Savon podcast,

all of the different behind the scenes

helped me learn more about all of these

people that were there.

Um, it, it matters.

These are all people that are trying to

become elite.

And the more we know about them as

we get into the season,

especially me as trying to,

to analyze everything that's going on,

the more I know about them,

the better I feel about my analysis.

And I truly appreciated everybody's effort

to get different behind the scenes out at

different times this weekend.

And they were all really good.

Um,

And they were all done in different ways,

which was really cool.

Each person had their own flair,

and I loved it.

Behind the scenes is for a handful of

people.

Well, I'm one of those people, Trish,

so I truly enjoyed it.

Trish,

I don't really care what the creators are

doing.

I'm consuming the content they're doing,

so I do care.

I really thought it was cool.

Be nice, Jay Birch.

Be nice.

Train Olive, love the rivalry videos.

I liked it.

thought there were some unique takes there

we'll talk about it maybe more as the

week goes on um so but i i

thought a couple of them came up with

some unique ideas with that uh claire nice

to see you again i definitely get feedback

from attendees that they are just excited

to see the media personalities in action

Yeah.

So people hanging around the analyst table

a lot in the broadcast.

Uh, so yeah,

there were people attracted to that for

sure.

I'm sorry.

I have to cut this short today.

Cause I do have an appointment.

I've my last couple of tests this week

before my big test in November.

So I got to go get that stuff

done.

But I will be back tomorrow.

Probably two shows tomorrow.

We'll be doing the lunch show and then

we're going to do a dinner show with

Kelly Clark and,

Kelly Clark, former semifinal athlete,

Masters athlete,

but one of the newest red shirts.

And she is putting together a program to

make firemen healthy on the job so that

they can do the job to the best

of their ability.

We're going to talk about that in a

nice casual conversation tomorrow night on

the show.

So join me then either tomorrow at lunch

or tomorrow night at dinner.

We'll be doing both tomorrow.

Thank you so much for joining me.

I love you all.

It's been an awesome day.

We'll see each other.

We'll see you tomorrow.

Next time, lunch, Clydesdale,

all that stuff.

Bye.

Bye.
