HBCU Gameday

Bowie State beats Johnson C. Smith 16-13 on homecoming — a touchdown with 34 seconds left — and hands the Golden Bulls their first CIAA loss of the season. Why it matters: SJG and K-Ferg break down a thriller that blew up the CIAA championship picture. Johnson C. Smith outgained Bowie State 383-194 but went 3-for-5 in the red zone with two field goals, and Bowie's defense made the lead stand up. Five teams are now chasing four spots at championship weekend in Durham, with Virginia Union (6-0 CIAA) and Virginia State still unbeaten in conference play. Also on the show: Winston-Salem State wins its second straight, 21-14 at Lincoln (PA); Elizabeth City State beats Livingstone 34-26 for its own streak; a peek at the NCAA Division II playoff picture; and previews of the weekend that decides the race — Virginia State at Johnson C. Smith and Bowie State at Fayetteville State on Saturday, plus Virginia Union vs Lincoln (PA) Friday night at Lincoln Financial Field. Originally streamed live on YouTube on October 28, 2026, as "Thriller: CIAA vs. Everybody."

What is HBCU Gameday?

The undisputed leader in HBCU Sports and Culture.

I just like my werewolf, though.
That was not, that was not what I pre-show run down,
but I figured it's Halloween, it's Scorpio season.
My birthday is right around the corner.
Why not just give you a little bit of something extra?
What's going on, everybody?
This is SJG and I'm glad K-Ferg is still along
with me for the ride here.
And yeah, man, it's getting scary out there for some teams.
You know, it's that time of the year, Chris.
You know, every year, every year in the CI double A,
the last couple of years, well, not so much last year,
but a lot of these years, you think about 2024
when, you know, Johnson C. Smith celebrated
like they won a Super Bowl when they beat,
you know, Winston Salem,
and then they lost their last two games.
And then before that, there was,
before that, there was, God, who was it?
There was, before that, there was Virginia State
who had a game that they could have just sleepwalked
against Elizabeth City, you thought,
and here they go losing to them
and put themselves out of the championship picture.
And if you go back even further,
we've had some years where Virginia Union, you know,
before they had won on their run,
they looked like they might be the best team in the league
and those guys from Murfreesboro beat them a couple of times
and kept them out of the championship game.
That's how they got there that year.
Man, that was close.
But yeah, Chris, man, what is it about this time of the year
to see at double A?
And obviously, if you've been under a rock,
we're talking about, we are talking about
Bowie State's homecoming slasher film
against Johnson C Smith.
Chris, man, talk to me about this game
and what it is about late October in the CIA double A play
that just kind of, you never know what's gonna happen.
Well, they're just teams that just seem to be filling
themselves a little bit.
And JCSU once again got caught up with that.
It feels like not respecting the opponent here.
They had this great offense, rushing attack.
We talked about that a lot.
The passing games have been coming on real strong,
but all they did was just chew up yards between the 20s.
And once you got inside the 20s,
they just stalled out every time.
And so, really the story of the game
is JCSU went three for five in the red zone.
Two of those three that they scored were field goals.
And so, Bowie State kind of got out to a bit of a lead.
And if you look at the score, it's nine, six,
and it looked like it was all field goals,
but it really wasn't.
And it was Bowie State scoring a touchdown
and not making the extra point that was the issue.
But man, you just kind of wonder,
is JCSU going to play another one of those games
where they're just waiting to the fourth quarter
to make a move?
And that's exactly what happened.
The problem is, is Bowie State did some things
and then the refs helped them out
because JCSU kept getting called the penalties
on that last drive too.
And I will admit, because I will be remiss to say
that penalties also bailed out JCSU on their touchdown.
Drive, there was a play on there.
They're seeing like they turned the ball over
late into the, well into Bowie State territory,
but the refs called the recovery was out of bounds.
So JCSU dodged some bullets on the way there.
They just didn't look like themselves.
They just didn't seem to have some answers
for what Bowie State was doing on defense.
And it really just bit them at the wrong time.
So major kudos to Bowie State for what they've done.
Now four and four on the year,
four and two in division two play.
Didn't quite see that coming,
but we got teams out here that are definitely improving
towards the end of the season.
And in this particular case, JCSU got got.
Simple as that.
I mean, what do you say when the team,
you know, gets more than twice the yards
and they don't win the game.
Like you look at the stat sheet,
you would think that JCSU won, but here we are.
Well, you know, I never wanted to kick someone
when they're down.
But man, I still had forgotten that celebration
two years ago, but all right, all right, all right.
You know, I mean, I don't want to say Smith Smith,
but they got a Smith, you know,
and last year they avoided it down the stretch.
But if you remember last year,
they went to Elizabeth City,
not even as long a bus ride,
and they were lucky to escape with a win in that game.
And, you know, a similar, you know,
a similar team coached by one of the teammates,
you know, Adrian Jones, teammate is Dawson Odom's.
So, you know, they were able to, yeah, man, it's crazy.
I was on my way up to Maryland to go play.
On my way to Maryland, I was thinking,
man, I literally passed Booey's exit.
I was like, well, you know, it's homecoming.
That's good for them.
But, you know, JCSU Smith surely,
they'll take care of it.
But hey, you know, that is why you play the game.
But yeah, guys, let us know what you think
about JCSU Smith and their loss.
We'll talk a little bit later
about how that complicates the CIAA play.
But yeah, let's keep on going.
Speaking of Elizabeth City State University,
look at the Vikings, huh?
Look at the Vikings.
The Vikings, they go over to the Smurf turf.
They, you know, pick up a 34-26 win.
You know, we've been talking about teams that,
you know, where teams are slatted this year, Chris,
and ECSU, you know, until a couple weeks ago,
they were winless.
Now they've got a little bit of a streak going.
You got a living stone program that's, you know,
been a bottom feeder this year.
They beat Winston, they beat Bluefield State.
But, you know, they found, you know,
maybe an Elizabeth City State team
a little bit more competent than those two
at the time that they played them.
So, you know, what do you make out of that game?
Well, I mean, I was a little surprised by living stone
and just, you know, they were just,
they were a very slow start in this game.
By the time you blinked, it was 28 to 10
and it was halftime.
Now, fortunately, they made it a game in the second half
because Elizabeth City is really more of a first half team.
But yeah, I mean, I would say,
the haymaker that ECSU laid in the first half
was more than enough to get, you know, past them.
They didn't even have to score in the second half
and they still would have won this game 28-26.
It helps that Trey Manley came back in this game.
I think he had been out for a game or two
and that kind of slowed them down too.
But in the end, I mean, hey, what do you really say?
You know, things like turnovers hurt,
things like can't get the ball down the field
for living stone.
They're kind of more of a dink and dunk type of offense.
They like ball control.
But when you get behind like that,
I mean, you're just trying to call it a behold
and it was just too much.
It's too much.
Yeah, so sets up an interesting meeting down there
in Elizabeth City a little bit later in the week.
Because the Rams are the winning streak.
Yeah, Chris, man, you know, they went up to Lincoln
and I was like, yeah, I'm not going.
You know, I'm not going up there.
Guys, let's go over there to Armist country.
But, you know, I wasn't that far.
Baltimore actually wasn't that far.
But, you know, again, Chris, this is a game
we talked about last week.
Wednesday coming off their first win.
Both these teams had only beaten Bluefield State.
So, I mean, I felt like it was a winnable game on the road.
And, you know, your thoughts on this one,
I mean, they got the special team scored for them.
The offense seems to, you know, have a, you know,
they seem to be, you know, growing with Jadak,
with Brady Jeffries.
And, I mean, they really had to depend on the passing game
because their running game, I don't know,
they left it somewhere on I-95.
But, you know, I might have ran over.
it on my way up to Baltimore. But, you know, hey, they found a way to win. Um, you know,
your thoughts on that, on that game.
Well, was this Winston's best passing effort of the year?
Two pass touchdowns. Well, two pass touchdowns, I think so. Yeah.
I mean, that's, that's, that took over like 238 yards of, looks like 238 yards of passing.
I mean, that's pretty darn good. You know, I thought it on here,
maybe it's more of a Ramfession or something, because, you know,
I thought that Lincoln would have had this game,
but I just did not account for the one area that is easy to overlook when it comes to
Lincoln line of football and add special teams. It got them to guess,
Elizabeth city badly. And that punk block,
as soon as, as I heard that so where, you know,
the punk dot block, I was like, Oh, I forgot all about that.
And that really just turned a momentum towards Winston. I mean,
to get seven, seven, and then that long pass play, you know,
they were already behind the sticks and you know, the,
the punter is also a quarterback. Um,
and he came in in the fourth quarter and tried to, you know, get, uh,
uh, Will Lincoln, him and Colory type Tyson tried to Will Lincoln down the field,
but, um, you know, Lee West's defense just really stepped up.
And, uh, and so it was, they just had a lot of momentum.
It was great to watch. Um, if you're a Ram fan,
so close to the Rams two in a row now.
And, uh, we kind of know where the,
kind of where the basement is and it doesn't have Winston in it. So there,
there's some relief there.
Yeah. Yeah. We'll talk about them a little bit later.
I went to the press conference. I don't have a clip for you, but you know,
they were, you know, uh, coach would be a broad brain and Jeffries with them,
which, you know, and he, you know, every time we bring Jay brain,
Jeffries up, he lets us know that that was his first, uh, his first, uh,
recruit. And, uh, you know, uh, he, he showed,
he showed a lot of really great poise against a really good answers in the,
uh, medium in the media session. So, you know,
a bright spot for WSSU. I, I don't know. I'm gonna call me a little bit biased.
I mean, I, I went to a couple of practices.
I didn't see anything that told me that that there was going to be another guy
that was going to be better than him, especially once you started losing. Uh,
so I'm, um, you know, I'm, you know, we'll see. We'll see.
Still got some learning to do, but it was sick. Um, let's, uh,
and then we got to be the A's.
All right. Um, and that would be, and that would be, uh,
Virginia union putting straight belt on Shaw,
a maroon on maroon violence. And, uh, you know,
again, a couple of weeks ago, a couple of weeks ago,
we had Shaw riding high and I, and, and, and,
and shout out to Sheena, Queens of the yard. I tried to tell her, I said, okay,
they got, you know, Hey, they got some wins and respect for the wins.
But once you get into October,
that schedule changes and it's been a, it's been a cold fall.
Y'all bears better bundle up. Cause, uh, you know, they got, you know, I mean,
it doesn't, you know, they, they didn't, uh, they didn't,
I mean, they didn't get 76 put up on against this time, but you know,
they ran into a buoys,
they ran into a buoy squad that was nobody really knew how good they were at
that point. And then, you know,
the back to back droppings against the Virginia schools. And, uh, yeah,
for Virginia union, it almost,
it almost feels in the, at least in the minds of the CIA AA fans,
it almost feels like that first week against, um, God,
which, which Mars Hill was it more? No, no, no, Mark, not Mars Hill. Uh,
Lenore Ryan, it almost feels like that didn't happen.
It almost feels like a season ago. Uh,
this looks like the Virginia union of old your thought on that game.
Um, yeah.
Well, the other part to this game was it was views homecoming.
I mean, you talk about scary things happening. I mean, that, yeah,
this is not, this is not unexpected here, but for Shaw, I mean,
they just continue to have the same problems that they had, you know,
against those, uh, those, uh, upper tier opponents, um,
you know, so we don't have to go.
They, they can't establish the run game. Uh, there,
that puts a lot of personal Alex in the marsh and,
and, uh, receivers are not getting free, things like that. So, I mean,
what do you really say? I know just looking at my notes here. Um,
let me pull out my, my legal pad. Cause a lot of notes out here. Um,
the,
some had to be illegal about what happened up there.
That part, um, view you five straight games with single digits
allowed, um, to the opponent. I mean, that's impressive.
And scary, scary out here. You know,
the bears are in hibernation right now. Um, you know,
I think one question, you know, as we look to try to end the season,
it's going to be can Shaw get to 500?
Well, stay tuned. We'll tell you more about that a little bit later on.
Okay. Okay. Nice. He's nice. He's in.
And then I would be remiss if we didn't talk about the Broncos who suddenly,
who suddenly have become the 99, uh,
who suddenly have become the 99, uh, uh, Rams,
you know, you know, 40 and 50 burgers on poor hapless bluefield
state. But I mean, hey,
the team that was averaging less than a touchdown a game score 43 on them.
So I guess we shouldn't be super impressed about it. But hey, you know,
um, your thoughts there, um, following win for pay available, you know,
you know, they're still there's the, uh, you know,
they're still, uh, they have this sweat a little bit,
maybe more to see if they're going to be in Durham after what happened in,
uh, after what happened in Bowie.
Well, yeah, I mean, good grief. I mean, uh, uh,
bluefield just did not put up much of a fight in the second quarter.
The game was over about halftime. Um, you know, they, uh,
Fayetteville put up 27 points in the second quarter. So it was, it was done.
Um, you know, a bluefield is just spiraling.
We kind of know where they're going to end up now.
They're going to be at the bottom of the conference.
It's just not a great situation there right now. Um,
you keep rotating quarterbacks cause of injuries and things like that. And,
you know, it was good to see Brandon Wiley back for the, uh, the, uh,
the wide receiver. It's good to see him back to do something. But I mean,
it's just, it's just not there. And for Fayetteville state, um,
it was definitely a lot of that. Some of those points were their defense,
you know, Christopher Bentley got a, got a pick six. Um,
so, uh, there'll be really interesting coming up to this week, you know,
cause, uh, Fayetteville's now, you know,
I think they're the ones that are, they have really a rushing defense and that's
going to be really interesting to watch. So.
No surprise there, Coach Bullwares doing his thing defensively for Fayetteville
state. And, uh, yeah, man, they, um, they had this one.
I mean, if you're, if you're bluefield state, let's,
let's look at the number I want to see is penalties.
Yeah, they're fancy situations.
Good Lord, brothers and sisters,
I'm having a hard time understanding brothers and sisters.
I'm having a hard time understanding. Well,
Chris for bluefield state,
you had a whopping 17 penalties
for 114 yards, which I mean, hey,
if we want to be positive here, uh, is, is an improvement over the last week.
So there's that.
Petty, petty, petty.
They are our version of, uh, Edward Waters,
except Edward Waters wins. Oh man, man, man.
I need now, I now see next week,
I'm going to have to do a deep dive and see how many of them are, uh,
coaching sideline penalties. I mean,
stop your sleep. Let's stop it. Stop it. Hey, man. Hey, they got a,
they got a, hey, I got to say, uh, I'm not there watching,
but I do enjoy the CIA football show and, uh,
they do have a really nice background set. Uh, first-class set.
Carl blue. Yes. Yep. Yep. All right. All right.
So, so, so let's see, let's see. All right.
All right. So let's,
let's see what we got here. Um,
last week, a little, a little bit more about the last week. Um,
before we get in, uh, Bowie state had an, uh, Bowie JCSU.
35-13 play winning drive that ended with 34 seconds remaining.
Coach Flowers pointed to how four penalties, 50 yards on that possession.
How much was that boy taking the game and how much was Smith helping?
You know, there's some questions there.
Yep.
Yeah, WSSU Lincoln Lincoln controlled possession and held the Rams in 57 yards.
You're supposed to win those games, but WSSU got that black punt and a 75-yard touchdown pass.
You know, and then, yeah.
Yeah.
Which winner, Chris, in your opinion, had the most to correct on Monday?
Which where had the most to correct?
Well, I still think that that's going to be a bully state.
You know, for what they were able to do, we also kind of see that they can't really hold up against more high powered offenses that are consistent,
especially in the in the passing game.
And so, you know, they're going to want to get into a knockout, dragged out fight to win some of these games is what this is turning into now.
So to me, I think that there's still there's still definitely room for improvement.
But, you know, it's year one of Dawson Odom's tenure.
So can't be even so hard on them.
But their passing game was just like un-existent against WSSU.
I mean, they only failed two or seven times against Winston.
So, you know, I mean, they're just, you know, they were in the rain.
Yeah, that was in the rain. But, you know, yeah, there's that.
There's that. But I think, you know, that kind of says where their passing game is.
Let's see. Yeah, you ran right. They've won two games in a row.
I mean, granted, this was the bottom of the conference.
But, hey, you beat who you can beat at this point.
All right. Well, this is a great segue into our next segment.
Any of these agencies can make a deep run into playoffs before we get to there.
Let's focus a little bit on the CIAA race right now.
And let me pull that up because, again, we have they have introduced a new wrinkle this season
in which the third and fourth place teams will meet on Friday night in Durham
and looking to try to get to better their positions for the NCAA playoffs.
So playoffs playoffs. All right. Let's see. Let's get this right here.
Yep. There we go. All right. So right now, the standings as we see them
are down there in the cellar, in the basement, in the dungeon, in the depths of hell.
Bluefield State. It's Halloween. I'm sorry, man. I'm sorry, man.
Fire and limestone. Yes. And SHIO, live from SHIO, it's Bluefield State football program.
All right. It's not red. All right. Lincoln, Nets, 1-5.
Livingstone, Shaw, Livingstone and Shaw are both at 2-5.
WSSU is at 2-4 along with Elizabeth City State, Bowie State and Fayetteville State 4-2.
JCSU 5-1. And the two schools from the Commonwealth of Virginia,
Virginia State and Virginia Union, unblemished in CIAA play.
The pearly gates of heaven. All right. So, yeah.
So again, we're looking at the CIAA potential.
So their top four teams will be in Durham.
And, you know, we thought we kind of knew who that was going to be
until Bowie State decided to play some ball and throw a monkey wrench in this thing.
And so now, Virginia State will play the top two schools.
I'm sorry, they will play the two schools directly beneath them or right with them.
Johnson C Smith and Virginia Union.
So either Virginia State or Virginia Union is finishing with a loss.
They will not tie. Come on. We cannot let that happen.
Let's see. And so one of them will have a loss.
You know, we know how they like to play footseat over there.
All right. I'm sorry. I'm still bitter from the other year.
All right. You'll notice a thing.
So one of them will have a loss.
And Johnson C Smith right there at five and one.
All three of those teams, well, you can't even say that.
Let me shut my ram mouth because, again, these teams have two games left.
So, I mean, you could have Johnson C Smith lose and go five and three.
And one of these other teams leaked frog them, Fayetteville and Bowie State.
So let me not say that we're locked in.
Because, Chris, I mean, how many teams are, we have what?
We do have five teams that are in play seriously for Durham, right?
So, yeah, Chris, how are you seeing things right now as we speak?
I mean, if you had to bet today, where are you going?
Give me your top four.
Oh, my gosh. Two.
I mean, I just had to start looking at the scenarios here.
I mean, you know, VUU with the win, you would think that they are going to at least be a monster top four.
And, you know, guess who they play?
They play Lincoln this week.
Yes. Yes. And Lincoln financial figure.
Yes. And VUU is known to be really good on special teams.
And so, you know, that just feels like you might just go ahead and write that in pencil.
And that's a win.
That's the same again.
Who knows?
Maybe Dr. Alvin Parker will be auditioning for a job there.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I'm just being messy.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know about what's going on up there at Delaware State, mate.
I don't know.
You know, you never know what you're going to get on CIAA versus everybody.
But let me mind my RAM, CIAA business at the moment.
Right. Right. Right.
So then you got like, you know, Bowie State, Fayette State.
It feels like an elimination game at this point.
They're playing each other this weekend.
So, you know, the winner of that one, you would think that they're going to be in.
Unless something else sort of blows up, right.
You know, let's say Fayette wins and then loses to Winston,
which is not exactly far fetched idea.
I like that scenario.
And based on Fayette State's history.
I like that scenario.
You know, Fayetteville has been known to have some great seasons.
And then all of a sudden they get to Winston the last game of the regular season.
And then they just fumble things.
So there's that.
Bowie State, they got Lincoln to end the season.
So yeah.
So, I mean, you would think that this game, if they win,
that they're going to be in.
So that's a really, that's a huge game now to getting into the top four.
Jason, it's you with an October surprise.
You know, they won't have the tiebreaker against Bowie now.
So, I mean, and so losing to Virginia State is not going to be good for them.
And then, you know, just like the Winston Fayetteville deal,
you never go with a JSU-Liftstone game how that's really going to turn out.
I mean, you just, those folks in Salisbury, man, they get up for that game.
So yeah, you never know.
That's the arrival, you know, but yeah.
Right, exactly.
Yeah.
So I would think that, you know, the VSU, VUU, JSU,
and the winner of Bowie and Fayetteville State will be the four.
So.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, I just, yeah, I think that that's what's going to be the four.
But hey, you know, stranger things have happened.
Yeah.
I mean, you know, as far as VSU and Johnson C. Smith,
whoever wins out is going to go pretty much.
Yeah.
I mean, because you're going to win your game and that game,
and you know, so there's that.
Yeah, especially since, again, since JSU did not have to play VUU.
All right.
So then beyond that, we've got the playoffs and D2.
And Chris, you know, I know they got this NPI thing, you know,
and we talked about that previously.
You know what?
So, you know what?
we can talk about that now really quickly and because we also because this gets into resume right
and now i mean i guess chris i mean we know that they want we know that so my thing is virginia
state their best win right now is buoy state right now as of today uh four win buoy state
otherwise they're kicking sharp oh yeah and sharp it's been so man they won those four games so quick
i forgot they won four games but hey they did they did they did win four games and hey some of us
would kill for four wins slasher it's impossible it's very possible it is still possible yeah i
should have should have brought my knife in from the kitchen but um yeah you know yeah so there is uh
so i mean and i guess who is who is uh virginia union's best win against chris
who that's a good what chowon you know what's chowon what it was chowon what's their record
like because you know that was my thing with virginia state like at one point i was like yeah
man they're the best but then i was like you know they've been kind of they've been they haven't
really had to play anybody yet but i will say this i mean if vsu can go on the road and beat
johnson c smith this week then obviously that gives them a solid quality win because johnson
c smith will at worst finish seven and three or seven and four if they get in the game
which is still a quality win whereas vu will not play um does not play johnson c smith so yeah
i yeah so i'd be interested in chris as to who their best win is but yeah yeah jamie i think
that's why uh because jamie asked chris why does that man believe he was okay so five and three
their best win is five and three fayetteville who could end up five and five you know they
could maybe end up they could maybe end up seven and four but you know i mean i think but i but i
do think that it could be it could be between chowon who's four and four right now and they
play fair and shorter and we can be fair and shorter yeah and uh and then uh and then uh
fayetteville is gonna be like you know or buoy i mean you can be one of those ends of being their
best win yeah so yeah i think that you know again vsu has uh they haven't really beaten anybody of
note as of yet again they can change that narrative this week if they go down to charlotte and handle
business but yeah they haven't really beaten anybody of note and i think because virginia union
you know they have been more consistent as a program when it's actually winning the cia
championship game and being a runner up last year and making they've been in the playoffs
four years in a row i think they're still more of a known commodity than a virginia state team that
again in henry frazier's what is that second year they start off eight no and then the bottom just
kind of falls out so i think that's why people are gonna have to see improve and also chris has
their running game gotten any better um i should know this but you know there's that but their
defense does seem to be getting better though um so so that's that's that's hopeful yeah i mean
the running game is like it's serviceable um i mean it shows that they rush for 166 yards but
you know you're going to get at least 50 to 70 of those yards from uh from uh uh rj matthews
so we gotta account for that piece of it um but i think you know to also answer jane's question
vu just plays better defense and i think that the one thing that that vsu can do to give vu
fits is maybe kind of what lonora ryan did to start the season is you know can can vsu
you know put some pressure on the past defense of of uh of vu because that's where they seem to
have some fits um so and we know that vsu can stretch the field we know that they can they have
players that can get go underneath it to to pass the ball too so that would be really really
interesting um but uh but yeah and i think this other comment from from from blue jacket is also
a good point you know teams that can effectively stop the run or slow it down quite a bit and force
vu to um pass the ball um puts a lot of pressure on rj or rozallis to to to do some things and so
you know both those things are great receivers um and they have you know mobile quarterbacks
uh vu is a little bit more complete with the rushing attack uh but vsu is way better so you
know way better with uh with uh the passing game so so then you got a good defense and you
got to look at special teams and and vsu special teams got better um but it's not quite at the level
of vu and then the defense seems to be better at vu so i think overall you're just looking at
a team that in vu that that just seems to be a little more complete than vsu but again that's why
they play the game so i mean it's very possible that like we could have those scenario all over
again that we v u u and vsu play each other two weeks in a row here that is that is a very
distinct possibility for james they win this game i mean that's what it is if they both win this
yeah they both win this week that's what you're gonna have you're gonna have you're gonna have
to watch them twice twice uh uh uh twice in a row not just dan wonder you know um you know and i'm
joking here but you know maybe the c i double a myself the ref some money or something so that
doesn't happen because uh yeah that's gonna probably put a little bit of a damper on the uh attendance
on saturday so i don't know yeah man you know well we will get there for sure but it's definitely
a lot to look forward to and then we were talking about the playoff picture uh chris right now how
many teams are are you seeing the c i double a getting in best case and worst case scenario and
then the actual i guess the worst case would be one i guess the best case would be maybe three
and the and the and the actual case is probably two is that is that right well um i so they're
gonna get one in because you have to auto beat now um so that's a thing in division two that that
rolled out um last year and so um so that's a that's not going to be an issue here um
how many i was trying to find the um the uh mpi what it looks like right now um because there was
a surprise in in there so if you look at super region two um let's see here uh i can't can i sort
this no okay that's all right that's fine i kind of know what they are anyway by memory so um
so virgin state was um i believe fourth virgin state was fifth surprise surprise
so j c s u still in the running um they're at um uh nine but look at look at who's in the mix
it's buoy state who would have thought somewhere clearance is barking right and and the thing
about that was you had to throw out those two fcs losses so you know four and two um
it's known we're squarely in the mix here so um if you went out you play in the other extra game
so there you go right exactly so i mean this is definitely a case where um i i see two teams
getting in especially if um if vsu and vu win this week i could see two teams getting in now
we're both hosts we'll both to one and one or we'll both be on the road be a question
but i could definitely see um two teams getting in if jcsu wins and takes care of business against
uh living stone i could see two teams getting in um the third team might be a little bit of a
stretch um you know in last season there was fable state that was in that mix and yeah you
really can't cap them out right now anyway but because they do have the best out of conference
win right now against usc pembroke who's doing pretty well um but uh you know you can't end up
on the eight line and you know whether it's sic or the ciwa we tend to have teams that sort of
end up on the eight line and and last year
The Northeast team had an upset and their auto bid got to eight and they had a second
team get in at seven.
So you got to get out of the eight line and to get that third team in.
But it's not impossible for the CIWA to get three teams in, which will be a quite remarkable
feat for the conference.
So yeah, it's possible, but I see two getting in.
Okay.
Okay.
All right.
Two, two, two.
Okay.
All right.
Let us roll on.
Thank you guys for watching CIWA versus everybody.
Jimmy says the SIC should get three again.
Chris, you're Mr. D2.
You can go ahead and answer that.
Well, yeah.
I mean, look at was it Kentucky State at the top right now of the of the rankings for
super region two and they have been addicting in their water.
So I mean, you know, those are teams that, you know, take care of business.
They can get in central states in the mix.
That's our version of Bowie state is a, yeah, central state, but they got a big game this
weekend, central state of Edward waters.
But yeah, they got even Tuskegee is in the mix at 10.
I mean, who, you know, they, they, they let go of their coach and, and they look at him.
I mean, it's an interesting sight to see over there, but that's all you see is, is really
been the beneficiary of the Gulf South falling apart.
In my opinion, and to see, I double A now being in region one.
Yeah.
That too.
That too.
The South Atlantic's beating up on each other.
So that doesn't help.
And right that part.
And then conference care, a lot of this isn't really that strong.
I mean, they might just get their, their auto bid and, and, and, and, and that's it.
So yeah, it, it, it, it's an incredible feat to see, to see the SIC regularly having multiple
teams like that in the conversation.
That's really what the, what the CIA double A has been, but, um, their layout is even more
favorable.
So yeah.
Okay.
All right.
Just stuff there.
Let's look ahead to, uh, this upcoming week, which I guess would be week number nine, technically.
Right.
I think so.
Okay.
Lost track.
You know, but, uh, Hey, yeah, it's week nine.
Yep.
Yeah.
Everything will be fine in week nine, except for Bluefield state.
All right.
Um, let's see, uh, let's see.
So let's look at, uh, let's, let's look forward to this week.
All right.
Uh, let's go ahead and get this one out of the way.
Uh, some, some's got to give Bluefield state and Shaw, um, yeah, uh, Shaw has homecoming
and senior day over there in Durham County stadium, Bluefield state, they just needed
to learn what the lines are.
Um, yes.
Um, how, how much does Shaw need to win this game by the feel good about themselves?
30.
Yeah.
30.
Yeah.
Yeah.
What's the one by 29.
So you got to win by 30.
I just want to say, I feel like Bluefield state needs to be on one of those commercials
now.
In the eyes of the nature, you two kids can, uh, you two can sponsor a Bluefield
state with, with the donation.
Like, it's just that bad right now, Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy.
It's not right.
And I know y'all know better than that.
Please stop.
Please stop.
I'm thankful.
I'm grateful for Bluefield state.
I really am.
I want to thank them.
That's a good show.
That's a good, that's a good, that's a good show theme for, uh, I wonder the November
shows.
What are you thankful for?
You know, Bluefield state.
All right.
Uh, let's keep going.
Uh, VU at Lincoln, the monster is still coming.
Um, yeah.
Um, Ken, I mean, well, really, I mean, if you're VU, you obviously you want to win.
Um, what's your, what's your over-under on this?
Do you think they're going to go for 80?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Um, Ken, I mean, well, really, I mean, if you're VU, you obviously you want to win.
Um, what's your, what's your over-under on this?
Do you think they're going to go for 80 in, in Philadelphia?
No, VU, I mean, Lincoln is a little bit better than that right now.
Um, if nothing else, Lincoln can play a little bit of ball control to keep the VU offense
off the field.
Um, but, uh, no, this is still going to be another, I think this will be another game
that, uh, VU gets into the forties.
I mean, the last two games, they scored over 45 points and this, this will be, uh, another
game like that.
I think this is an audition.
So I think they go on for 50.
I was going to go ahead and say it.
I think they go on for 50.
All right.
Uh, let's keep going.
Um, yeah.
Um, then we have WSSU at ECSU.
Yeah.
You know, um, yeah.
I mean, so your thoughts on this, uh, WSSU, again, they only have 54 points.
So I think they're going to go for 50.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
So we have 54 yards rushing, not, not necessarily a recipe to win, but, uh, you know, ECSU has run
defense.
I mean, what, you know, what, what are we looking at here?
You know, Ram's got to take the trip.
Um, you know, has ECSU had a breakthrough offensively and, you know, your thoughts on that.
Well, ECSU has run defense is actually not half bad.
Um, and it's going to force, I think they're going to force Winston to throw the ball in
this game.
Um, so that's something to really watch out for.
You know, one thing is, uh, can ECSU win a game without having to score 30 points will
be a question I have.
There are two wins or over 30 points a game, um, both teams in this case were forward six
last year.
And so they have an opportunity to get to that same record and salvage a season here.
Um, so it'll be a nice field going into the off season, but, um, but, you know, ECSU,
if they win this game, then it's a distinct possibility that they get there.
Um, uh, Winston still got a tough one after this one with Fable State, but nonetheless,
I mean, I think that that would be pretty remarkable if they can at least get to that.
Uh, man, it's a, it's a pretty tough one.
Um, it's definitely a pretty tough one to pick and it's at ECSU.
So there's a lot to watch out for, you know, if you watch, if you're looking at ECSU, um,
they got to be consistent in, in, in their, um, in their passing game and, um, and they
got to score in a second half.
They don't, they don't score often in a second half, right?
They, they use all their magic up real early.
So just hang on for dear life.
So I do think that it could be first team, 17 wins this game.
I do feel like that, um, I think this will be a big chess match.
Nope, it won't be Chris, you know, it won't be Chris, I'm going to be here.
I'm going to be here.
I'm thinking, I'm thinking the Rams will break 30 here.
The Rams, the Rams are going to break 30 here.
Yep.
Yep.
They're going to get a special team, they're going to get a special team score and it's
going to be the Brayton Jeffery show over at Roebuck stadium.
Not to put the impression on the kids, but I think, I think, I think, I think they,
I think they're gaining confidence.
I think they got, you know, they beat up on, they, they beat up on Bluefield state
enough, they went on the road and handled Lincoln at homecoming and you know, but
everything is going to be up there.
They got to, if you're at UCSU, you just got to hope you get them in third
down because they haven't been great on third down, but they did show, they have
some, they did show some big play ability, uh, in the passing game.
So, you know, I mean, they've shown it a couple of times.
I think, you know, a Biles Walker, Sean Walker, and, uh, you know, even
Jayden Grimes now getting back a little bit more healthy.
I don't know.
Might be a light show over there in the little city.
All right.
I'm rolling with the Rams out.
We back, baby.
All right.
So, um, let us please for the love of God, because
I do not want to hear when Lynn Sanders, uh, went, if they, if they beat us, no, you know,
you know, Lassie don't go in, he, he already got his stuff preloaded.
He's been very, he's been very conservative.
He's not been taken to bait, you know, but, uh, man, we need, we need this one.
We need this one.
We need this one.
They're not a rival.
They're not a rival, but you know, we'll call it the teacher's college classic.
All right, uh, let's keep going.
Uh, we will then go over to, all right, I guess we might as well go over to Murchison Road.
Why not?
That's where the game's at, right?
Mm.
Yep.
It is on Murchison Road, so, uh, you know, uh, yeah, you know, we've got the team.
We've got Fayetteville State, you know, a lot of people expected them to be in the Final
Four.
They're a predicted top four.
I think, you know, some people felt like, I think you were calling this the, uh, the
Fayetteville Invitational, this third place game.
Yep.
And, uh, yeah, they're right on the cusp of it, but standing in their way is the Bulldogs.
Hey, hey, hey, look at my vocal cords today.
Um, yeah, man, they, uh, they are, don't encourage them, Jamie, don't, what does that even mean?
I don't want to know.
I don't want to know.
That's too Fayetteville for me.
All right, um, yeah, so, uh, yeah, Chris, uh, Bowie State, uh, and that, uh, that defense,
that run-heavy game, going up against, uh, Coach Keenan's bullwares, defense, and, uh,
Broncos' offense that, you know, after getting shut out, spanked, silenced, slaughtered, uh,
against, um, Virginia Union earlier in the year, has found its, has feasted on some,
uh, subpar opponents, and, uh, they got themselves going.
They've got confidence.
Confidence is key this time of year.
That's our injuries and, and who, and who's still there?
So what are your thoughts on this game, Chris, uh, as this is basically an elimination game
for spot number four?
Gosh, both of these teams have some big question marks.
Um, Fayetteville State is not particularly great at running the ball, um, and they're
not always consistent in passing the ball.
They just sort of kind of like just, it's like they just jerry-rig things and they make
it work.
That's just the way I feel, I feel about Fayetteville's offense.
Um, the defense is lights out though.
Their defense is amazing, um, and you got to go against, you know, a, a Bowie State
defense that's been going pretty well lately, but their offense is very one-dimensional.
It is a run, folks, run first, run heavy.
We try to pass the ball, but we just don't have that much success doing so.
Um, so who, who, if, if Fayetteville State gets into third and shorts, they're going
to move the chains because they retain the beast offense.
And I kind of cackle at, you know, commentators that have not seen it.
And they're like, Oh, they're bringing out like three fullbacks.
Now those are like defensive lobbing, like they're, they're bringing out in that formation.
And yeah, so, so scary times.
Um, so, so that's really the key for Fayetteville State is to manage the game, to get into,
you know, third and shorts.
Um, you know, if you're a Bowie State, you just pretty much got to keep doing what
you're doing and hope it works, which is run the ball.
Maximus Jones and Daniel Coles, they do a pretty good job at that.
Joshua Keith start using his legs a little bit more.
Um, and, uh, they're sort of playing to see if you're going to make a mistake and they
can take advantage of it.
That's what I feel like, um, Bowie State is, um, both teams, if I had to find out.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
And both of them have to find a way to be disciplined.
I mean, um, Bowie State had a lot of penalties too, uh, against JCSU.
So man, this is, this is, this is like that, um, that, that VUU FSU game early this year.
That's what this is like to me.
Like this is not going to be a, a, a sexy game at all.
This is going to be a chess match and being patient and watching how teams kind of sort
of put Bill drives together or somebody make a mistake.
That's what this game is to me, but it is definitely a toss-up in my opinion and it shouldn't be,
but it is.
Yeah, we'll call it the grunt bowl.
All right.
So, and, uh, we will finish this thing here over in Charlotte.
Finally after pushing on lightweights for most of the conference season, you know, besides
writing that super heavyweight they fought over there in, uh, well, they were there, uh,
against, uh, South Carolina state, you know, they go, they finally meet someone in their
weight class, going over to Bayford road, Irwin belt stadium, one half of a stadium.
The train will be going to, you know, um, but, uh, but, uh, yeah, I mean,
they talked to me about this game, Chris, uh, you know, two, uh, two, uh, two offensive minded
coaches, you know, trying to get a win, trying to stay out of the third place game, trying
to give themselves, get to Saturday, but they got to take it.
They got to handle their business this week.
What are your thoughts on this game, Chris?
I just want to say first of all, and two and two and both defensive coordinators play
defensive coordinators are, are prodigies of key this bullware who played for him
defensively on that night on that 2012, when sustainable state university team,
which made it all the way to the NCAA championship and all the greatest team in all of the CIA
recently. Do you have a better one? Uh, you know, yeah, those two guys are going to go
have head to head too. So your thoughts on this game, Chris?
Well, I was just going to say, first of all, you mentioned the train passing by,
it seems like the train always comes by. I just want to say, I always feel like there's
also a scat pack that always is flying by on the freeway that you can hear pick up on
the radio stream too. And, uh, and, and people were like, and somebody was like,
they were disappointed that Virginia state's band wasn't coming to Johnson C Smith.
Where were they going to sit? Be for real is 200 of them. It's 200 of them. It's only one side.
And both, both bands got to fit there. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Go ahead. Yeah.
I mean, the hope is that, uh, you know, somebody's offense turns into a little bit of a scat
pack to run up and down that field. But I feel like it's going to be more like the last time
it was, it was not a high scoring game. Last time these two teams met a couple of years ago,
I think it was like 20 to 14 or 2017, something like that. Um, easily can see this game being
like that. Um, you know, JCSU defense is pretty good, but you know, as we saw that they were
actually mortal last weekend, um, VSU defense, I'm not so sure. I'm, I'm, I'm a little concerned
over there, um, as to what, how strong they're going to be to be able to either get to the
quarterback, um, or slow down JCSU. Um, so that's one thing I'm really curious about.
We know VSU's offense is heavy on the pass that they are very dynamic in that, in that game.
So JCSU can slow them down by throwing off the timing of, uh, and don't let RJ, uh, Matthews get
loose. So, man, you talk about high stakes. Oh my gosh. The way that the conference schedule has
played out and everything, this is about as high stakes as it gets to me. It feels like, um,
yeah, next weekend could be really interesting, but my goodness, this is, this is, this is intense.
And to me, they just, they kick the chaos into collegiate athletic association is at it again.
So lots of, lots of look at, um, in this one, I think that the game's close. You definitely
think that JCSU might have a little bit of edge in the kicking game.
So, but, uh, I will say this, I really like what VSU does, especially with, um,
you know, try to supplement the run game with using like trailing print low,
uh, the wide receiver kind of, you know, they call, they call him the Trojan.
I understand he's kind of everywhere.
I really like what they do to try to supplement
that run game the best they can.
And so I expect these two coaches to adjust
to whatever the other ones throwing at them in this game.
This one's going to be really, really fun to watch, I think.
Yeah. You know, we'll see for sure.
You know, like I said, Virginia State, you know,
maybe this loss was the best thing for Johnson C. Smith,
you know, maybe.
I mean, you know, maybe you get that ugly loss
instead of an ugly win.
And you really got to, you know, get back to the basics.
I don't know.
But, I mean, game is on base for the road.
So, you know, that's got to be worth,
it's got to be worth some points somewhere.
You would think, but I just, yeah,
it's out, you know, on the Sunday night show,
for those of you who are not familiar,
dtfootball.com has a Sunday night show inside Dt football.
This was a game that was featured on there,
and I knew it was coming.
And I think JCS should have won this game.
I think just like you mentioned,
this may have been the best thing to happen to them
that you can't take any opponent for granted here.
And if you really want to get back to the championship game
with defender of crown, this is it.
And there's ways to get there.
But, you know, VSU is going to be hungry.
I mean, they're in the top 25 for the first time,
and sometimes they avoided the number 25 curse
by not playing last week,
because these like teams 20 to 25,
they just don't survive, man.
But, yeah, the conference actually got two teams in now
in the top 25.
Both VSU and VUU are recognized in the top 25 in the country.
The question is, is it warranted for either one of those teams?
And one we'll find out this week,
the other one we're going to find out next week.
So we'll see.
Okay. Well, look, a lot to look forward to
if you're a fan of Seattle A football.
I appreciate everybody for tuning in.
Please make sure you support the rest of our content.
Queens of the Yard will be on with Sheena tomorrow.
Of course, we'll have our celebration bowl,
Road to Celebration Bowl.
Tyler's working on that now.
That'll be coming out soon.
And then, of course, Road Warriors on Sunday,
or Monday-ish, probably Monday.
And, yeah, I appreciate everybody for tuning in.
And, yeah, okay.
Of course, he hates that show.
I guess he's starting about over the year of the show, Chris.
Okay.
Oh, got to do with that over here.
All right, guys, we'll catch you on the next one.
