Have you ever felt like you needed to win God’s approval? Do you sometimes think you’ll never be good enough? Shame is something we don’t often like to talk about, but it affects all of us in one way or another. On this episode, Ryan talks with Toni Kim, author of Shame Redeemed: Learning to Live in Christ’s Freedom about topics from the book, including what shame is, how it affects our lives, and how we can find freedom from it in Christ.
Toni Kim has been the director of spiritual care for the National Association of Evangelicals since 2021. For 17 years, she served as a minister at Park Street Church in downtown Boston, where she helped found the disabilities ministry Enable Boston. Toni received her B.S. in applied math from Yale University, and a Master in Christian Studies from Regent College, with a double concentration in Biblical languages and interdisciplinary studies. Her thesis was on what the Bible says about shame and how that impacts Asian American evangelism and spiritual formation. In 2021, she completed Harvard Kennedy School of Government's Public Leadership Credential. Toni is a licensed minister with the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference.
Toni serves on the board of governors for Regent College and visiting board for Taylor University. Previously, she was on the advisory council for the Fuller Center for Spiritual Formation, the founding board of Joni and Friends Greater Boston and board vice chair of a local Christian community development organization. She and her husband Walter currently reside in Charlottesville, VA, and have two adult children, including a daughter with Down syndrome who lives up to her middle name of Joy.
