What is Progress and Perfection?

Recovery themed, Christian flavored daily reflections for those struggling, recovering, or seeking understanding.

Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.

Psalm‬ ‭90‬:‭1‬

Isn’t rest at the top of the list of what we are after?

Not the slothful mess that often occurs when laziness meets opportunity, but the combination of solace and assurance that comes from walking in the light.

Don’t we strive for this deep certainty?

What would it look like to walk confidently through life?

The turmoil of addiction is long lasting, but not forever.

On the other side, we need a replacement—and quick. We need to insert something by which we can draw guidance if we are to navigate the bumpy tract of sobriety.

The Psalms call us. In myriad small pieces, they can agitate the lifeless emotions that otherwise look for ways to sabotage and trick us. They can breathe into the bitterness and the confusion that followed us from drunkenness to dryness.

We are meant to dwell, but not in ourselves. We are meant to seek, but not for ourselves. We are meant to be satisfied, but not through ourselves. We are meant to by guided, but not by ourselves.

Turn your focus toward Him. This isn’t easy. It isn’t convenient. But the long-lasting rest that satisfies fully isn’t acquired by happenstance. It’s in the seeking that we are renewed bit by bit. It’s in the daily offering of ourselves that we find the missing pieces we were not even aware of.

God, let me rest well in you.
