Marissa: Welcome to the Gilded
Pod, where today we're talking
the Gilded Age Season 4 trailer.
I'm one of your hosts, Jason Reed.
With me, as always, the
one and only Marissa Garza.
Marissa, you rich?
Jason: I'm rich in television.
Jason, are you rich?
Marissa: I'm rich in style,
in soul, and in life.
Uh, we are here to talk the
"Gilded Age" Season 4 trailer.
We are so amped up, excited for
"The Gilded Age" to come back.
We j- we just gotta talk about it.
So the first thing we got is this s-
Season 4 trailer to get everyone, to get
us, to get you guys prepared for what's
coming in Season 4 of "The Gilded Age."
Jason: Yes, it is w- like a
minute and something worth of
content, but we're gonna talk
about it for at least five minutes
Marissa: Yes.
Um, as long as you're here, as long
as you're-- we're back in the "Gilded"
pod, uh, arena, if you would be so kind
to review, rate, and subscribe to, to
this feed here so that when we do start
talking about "The Gilded Age" Season
4 again, you will have, you'll, you'll,
you'll be right with us 'cause you'll
get it, you'll get it all up to, into
your feeds if you subscribe to us.
And, uh, we would really appreciate
if you reviewed and rated because
that gets us into the, uh, algorithms
of other people that would be
interested in this type of content.
So that'd be great if you did that.
If you wanna just email, email us about
any and everything, you can just do that
all in the goodpodfeedback@gmail.com
to just, uh, chat it up with
us about, uh, "Gilded Age."
If you watch our other, uh, shows we
talk about, "The Good Wife," "Elsbeth,"
all that stuff, you can also leave
that information there as well.
Uh, if you wanna just help out this
podcast directly, you can always do that
by going to buymeacoffee.com/goodpod
to donate any monies, uh, that
you can spare for us, 'cause this,
uh, podcast does not run for free.
It does cost to make this podcast.
So we would be greatly appreciative
if you did any and all of those things
to help us, uh, be a better podcast.
Be, be a podcast in general
Jason: Yeah.
Uh, two things there.
Jason loves a review, so if you could give
us a review, uh, at any time, especially
towards the start of the season, it
really will help kick us up into the
algorithm so that people can find us.
And two, if for some reason, if I do put
this in the Good Pod feed, uh, the Gilded
Pod is its own feed, so make sure you're
following us over on the Gilded Pod.
Uh, we do have a Okay, so our story with
The Gilded Age is we started our coverage
over on PoSha Recaps, so I do have a link
to that that I'll put in the show notes
so you can catch all of our season one co-
or season … Nope, season two coverage.
We covered season three of- on
our own here on the Gilded Pod,
and we're back for season four.
Couldn't be more excited for
that, but we do have kind of a
disjointed library of coverage.
So if you are looking for them, I
will put all of the links in the
show notes so that you have them.
Um, but Jason was lured into the
show by me because it is about
mess, and we are back here for
season four of Historical Mess.
Marissa: Yeah.
L- listen, I, I was, I was skeptical
when, uh, when Marissa, "Hey, wanna
cover this show?" And he's like,
"Ah, it's not really my thing.
I don't really do period pieces.
I don't love it." But she's
like, "There's a lot of mess.
There's a lot of trashy stuff
happening." And I was like, "Oh, okay.
Let me see." And so yes, of
course, uh, as I watch, I was
like, "Oh yeah, this is good."
And I love me some good,
uh, s- good trashy mess.
And even though it's, it's couched
in, uh, you know, old-timey stuff,
it, it's still… A good mess is a
good mess whenever you can get it
Jason: Yes.
Uh, well, Jason, I know you watched
the last episode of Season 3 right
before this episode, but I wanted to
break down this trailer, and we can
maybe talk through each of the main
character types, and you can kind of
fill us in into where you last saw them.
So what we see from Bertha and
George in the trailer is Bertha
saying, "We are truly being tested.
We must fight with every tool we have.
No one has all of the power all of the
time." And then we hear George say,
"You may be the key to our family's
survival." So remind us, like, where
were George and Bertha in Season 3?
Marissa: Well, this is interesting 'cause,
you know, Railroad Zaddy and Opera Mommy
were not on the best of terms as we left
Season 3 because, uh, you know, George,
George, uh, if you remember, got into
a near-death, uh, situation at the end
of Season 3 where he had been shot,
um, by s- maybe some of his rivals.
We're not exactly sure yet who
exactly shot him, but uh, he was shot.
He was, he was on the brink of death
until a Black doctor came and saved him.
And, you know, they, uh, George and
Bertha were beefin', you know, at that
time because Bertha had married off his
daughter to the Duke, and George was
not, uh, super-duper happy with that.
And,
Jason: wanted a love match
Marissa: right.
And so, uh, you know, at the time, we
thought that this near-death experience
had brought George, Bertha back together.
George, you know, uh, attended
the ball that she was throwing
even though he'd just been shot.
They were having a good time at
the ball, and Bertha was like,
"Okay, things are back on track.
We're okay." Little did she suspect or
know that at the end of that, the next day
George would be like, "Oh yeah, no, I ju-
I just came to the ball to, you know, make
sure that, you know, everyone thinks we're
all cool, all copacetic, 'cause, you know,
if, if we are seen as lower in society,
that will affect our, our company.
So I had to make an appearance
to make-- But we are not cool.
We are not good." And he, he ditched.
He ditched.
He left.
He's like, "I'm out of here.
I'm going back home.
You stay here 'cause, uh, I don't, we,
we're not on good terms right now."
So he left, and this was like, this
was as Bertha was finding out from
Gladys, like Gladys comes in and she's
like, "Hey, by the way, I'm pregnant.
Should we tell Daddy?" It's
like, "Oh, Daddy's leaving.
He's gone.
Oh no." So we were like, "Oh no, what
is gonna happen with George and Bertha?"
But it seems like watching this trailer
Jason: Okay, this is my thing.
This is what I think in,
because of this trailer.
They are not together when
these things are happening.
We are not seeing a united front.
So I feel like they're going to still have
competing ways of thinking about how to
move forward, because I think Bertha here
is saying, "We are truly being tested."
Like she's going for her Bertha
strategy of like, "We're all together.
We gotta be the family.
We gotta put all this stuff up." I
don't know who George is talking to when
he's, when he says, "You may be the,
the only thing to re- really trust."
I think he's talking to Gladys, but
Marissa: to Bertha 'cause
it seems like he's on the
stairway and Bertha like behind
Jason: Oh, I di- I totally missed
Marissa: Yeah, I-- But listen,
trailer editing is very deceptive,
so it could definitely, definitely
could not be talking to Bertha.
It could definitely be a,
Jason: I don't know
Marissa: Uh, but the way they want us
to believe that he's talking to Bertha,
which honestly might have me being
more of like we are just doing like
m- like firmly in the camp of we are
doing this for appearance's sake, right?
Jason: exactly.
Yeah, like, like we are having
a Good Wife situation here.
Like, we are having a, you
know, marriage for appearances.
So we shall see what happens there.
And I think just for everyone,
we w- I think we're gonna do a
predictions type of podcast closer
to the air date so that we can kind
of really dig into these storylines.
We're just dabbling into them
with the, with the trailer here.
Uh, so the next thing we see is Agnes.
Again, the success of the entire family.
It's almost, almost as if, Jason,
it's almost as if the rich are worried
they're gonna lose their power this
Marissa: What?
Get out of here
Jason: what?
Uh, so Agnes is saying the entire
success of the family hinges
on this presidents' dinner.
I think she's talking
presidents of the United States.
Um, this is no time to
be pinching pennies.
And of course, we get a little snark
from Ada saying, "Especially when
they're not your pennies to pinch."
Marissa: Yeah, 'cause for those that
don't remember, uh, you know, Ada is
now basically the, uh, the patriarch.
Not, it's not the patriarch.
It's the, uh,
Jason: Matriarch.
Marissa: the matriarch of this
family 'cause now she has the
most money left to her by her, uh,
pastor husband who passed away.
And they've-- there's, uh, been a
role reversal from Agnes to Ada.
And Ada, we saw Ada getting
more into her, like, confidence
at the end of last season.
Like, "Oh, a- actually this is, this
is my house to run." And she's, you
know, more and more letting Agnes
know, like, who, where the bread
is buttered in this family, okay?
Jason: Yeah.
Well, and Agnes though has always had,
like, the survival of the family in her
actions and her appearances and all.
Like, she was Bertha
before Bertha basically.
Like, she was for the family.
So I think she feels like, "We
gotta do this dinner." I don't
know if she's hosting the dinner.
It looks like she's hosting
the dinner, but I don't know if
I don't know where she's
gonna host that in her home.
Like, I don't
know how they're gonna have
that many people in her home
Marissa: I think that's
what Agnes is saying.
Like, she's like, "This is, this is our
chance to like, you know, be, be top dogs
again in society or whatever. So this
is, this is important." I, what, what
president would be in this timeframe?
I,
Jason: Yeah, I can't remember.
They had a president with a book.
Remember the Brooklyn Bridge episode?
We will confirm this before,
before the season starts.
Um, but yes, it was Zachary
Taylor, I think, maybe.
I don't know.
But c- I don't know.
Marissa: I don't know
Jason: I, I don't know… I know
history, but not chronologically
Marissa: Okay
Jason: Uh, yeah.
So it looks like they're
still talking about money.
Then we see a scene with Peggy, Peggy's
mom, and Claire Huxtable, AKA Phylicia
Rashad, AKA Black doctor's mom,
Marissa: Mrs. Kirkland.
Yeah
Jason: Thank you.
I was like, "I'm gonna get there
eventually." And, um, sh- it looks
as though they're like … They're
all dressed in, like, similar
costu- like, similar dresses.
It's, like, white with blue flowers,
kinda like a China pattern in some way.
And Peggy says, "I am happy to join the
family, but as myself." And, uh, Mrs.
Marissa: Kirkland
Jason: Clark- Kirkland says, "I, I
wanted to give you a smoother entrance.
Would you rather everyone know
the sorta details?" And, and then
basically Peggy's mom is like, "Okay."
Marissa: I was like, "Oh, you, you on one.
Okay." So I mean, basically, I, th- this
would, you know, I mean, as we remember,
Peggy and Dr. Kirtland, Kirkland got
engaged at the end of last season, and
it feels like Mrs. Kirkland is maybe
making up some stuff to like, "Hey, I
don't want m- I don't want people knowing
that my son is with someone that, you
know, had a baby, uh, had a marriage
before, lost her baby," blah, blah, blah.
So she's trying to, probably trying to
like give Peggy a cover story of like,
"Oh, she's, uh, this and that and this.
Don't worry about everything else."
And Peggy's like, "No, I want to be me.
Like, you're not gonna give
me any fake cover story.
I'm gonna tell people what they need
to know if they need, when they need to
know it, and you're not gonna give me
some stupid fake cover story to cover
your ass because you think you'll be
shamed if people know about the real me."
Jason: Yes.
Agreed.
Then, but I'm really kind of like,
I'm like, "Go Peggy, you better really
stand your ground. Don't let her win."
Marissa: I mean, I, I th- I think the
big thing is like, is she, i- is Dr.
Kirkland gonna stand up to his mama?
'Cause that's… I mean, we saw it a
little bit in, in the end of last season,
but we need to see it consistently,
uh, for, I think, I think that's
gonna be the crux of this storyline
Jason: We did see, um, Mr.
Kirkland stand up to Mrs. Kirkland
a little bit in this situation.
But, uh, then we have this scene
between, I totally, again, I'm
gonna know everyone's names
by the start of the season.
What's her face?
What's her name?
The lady who was the maid who then,
like, tried to sleep with Zaddy
Marissa: Mrs. Turnerton.
'Cause she was, 'cause she was Turner,
but then she got married to Winterton,
Jason: was Turnerton.
Marissa: Turnerton
Jason: Mrs. Turn, yes, Mrs. Turnerton
is basically saying like, "Hey, if
like the Astors and Bertha can pretty
much define society for themselves,
why can't we define society for
ourselves?" So she's up to something
Marissa: Well, I mean, listen, she-- The
last time we saw Mrs. Turnerton, her and,
uh, Oscar were getting pretty chummy,
and Oscar had like kind of pitched like
a little bit of a, you know, we can
make it, we can have an arrangement.
You know what I mean?
Like we can do sl- I think this is
gonna be like this we- this like kind
of maybe an offbeat shoot, uh, like
offshoot of society that is defined.
She's like, "Why can't we make some weird
offbeat version of this?" Which I think
Jason: The beatniks, like the beatniks
Marissa: which I think is really going
to push, uh, Mrs. Astor and Bertha
more closely together as allies to
kind of fight against this like new
weird version of society that maybe
Mrs. Turnerton and Oscar wanna head
Jason: It's like, how dare
you have a middle class?
There needs to be so much
room between the poors and us.
There-- We cannot have, like, this, this,
like, other under society happening.
And especially fr- it, like, Mrs.
Turnerton's very dangerous in
this situation because she knows.
She lived in Bertha's house.
She ha- she knows exactly
how to do all of that stuff.
And then we've got Agnes' son, Oliver,
Oscar, uh, who, you know, has been
in old money his whole life, but he's
gay, so he needs his own safety net.
And then the- them together having
a, a marriage of appearances, a
lavender marriage of sorts or, or
a relationship of sorts can really
kind of boost their, their things.
So we'll see what happens there.
I'm sure there's gonna be
many a parties, I feel.
we see a short little scene of JJ,
our, our dear sweet clock boy, the
man who made it rich, who pulled
himself up from his bootstraps,
basically sitting down at a table,
very forlorn, like, he- head in hands
saying, "I will never be one of them."
And then you see the mean old maid
lady say, "I coulda told you that."
Um, but it does not look good.
Like, I feel like something's
gonna happen with his money.
Like, I'm a little concerned.
Marissa: I mean, I, I feel like it's
just going to be a, a version of
like, people don't respect me because
I used to be a, a footman and so on.
He's kinda, we're gonna be caught
in between these two worlds of
Jason: and Larry's probably gonna be
like, "I don't have time for you. I
have to help my mom." So he, 'cause he
was kind of stewarding JJ into business
last season and selling his patent and
making all this stuff happen for him.
So we shall see what happens there.
Speaking of Larry, we do get a Larryan
sighting in the trailer, everyone.
We get a twirl about the dance floor
Marissa: There's gonna be, there's
gonna be a, a, I think this is
the, the, the, the f- the firm
blooming of the Larry and romance.
'Cause I mean, we got, we got some,
some, uh, some stuff with them
last season that wasn't great.
Like, you know, Marion said Larry was
like, you know, out there being a, a, a
roundabout or whatever you wanna call it.
A, a ruffian maybe going to some, uh,
some ill houses of disputes, I think
Jason: Yes.
Marissa: they were called.
Um, and Larry was like, "I ain't
do nothing though." And she's like,
"But you lied to me, bro." She's
like, "Ah, but I ain't do anything.
I lied about where I was going, but
I ain't do nothing." I, I, when I
was watching that, that finale again,
I was like, "This is not right.
Why are we gaslighting Marion to
think that she did something wrong
here when, when Larry did indeed
lie about where he was going?" Yes.
Jason: He did.
Yeah.
Yes
Marissa: Uh, Larry's like trying
to make her feel bad about it.
"You, how dare you not trust
me?" Bro, you lied to me, my guy.
Um, yeah, if you wanna hear our
thoughts about that, just go back
to our season three, uh, podcasting.
Uh, w- was quite a time.
But yes, I think this is just going to be
like the, the season of Larry and, right?
Like, they're gonna be
Jason: I hope so
Marissa: And who knows, who, who knows how
long it's gonna take for them to actually
get married, 'cause around here, these
marriages, they, they come quick and fast.
So, uh, I'm as-
Jason: What if they're married right then?
What if they're married
while they were s- dancing?
Marissa: we gotta get our black wed, and
that's, that's definitely gotta be coming.
'Cause I-- we've
Jason: Yeah, that's true.
That's
Marissa: seen some behind the scenes,
uh, photos and stuff that really hints
at definitely getting a Peggy/Dr.
Kirkland wedding.
So I, I don't want
anything to upstage that.
So I, I think that's gonna be great.
It's gonna be grand.
But, you know, I'm-- I would probably say
I, I'd put it like a 95% certainty that
by the time the season's over, Larry and
Will be married, at the very least engaged
Jason: I was gonna say I could go
for engaged because if they have, I-
they could be the wedding of next.
Uh, it all depends on if this
is the last season or not.
I don't know.
But, um, then the last thing that
happens in the trailer is we get,
of course, a classic Agnes quip.
She says, "Vengeance shall be
mine." And Ada says, "Shouldn't
we leave vengeance to the Lord?"
And Agnes says, "Not if
we want it done properly.
I find that often that
the Lord is too lenient
Marissa: That was hilarious and
a classic Agnes, uh, Agnes line.
Loved it
Jason: But whose vengeance are
we talking about here, Jason?
What do you think?
Do you think this is against,
like, do you think her and Bertha
are fighting against a thing?
Do you think this is against the
middle class, the Mrs. Turner chin?
Do you think this is some, some … I
don't know who she could be mad at,
but she's gonna be mad at somebody
Marissa: that would be interesting
because I can definitely see
her having a problem with Oscar
shacking up with, uh, Mrs. Turton.
Um, so I can definitely see that being
where she's getting her anger and, and
her, uh, you know, her, her fury out at.
So I can definitely see
that being, uh, the case
Jason: Yeah, we shall see.
One, one final thing I wanna bring
up about the trailer is, of course,
this is a classic HBO trailer.
We get big music, we get scene, scene,
scene, scene, and then we get phrases
that form some sort of sentence.
And so throughout all of this it was,
doom, among the elite, doom, one false
move, doom, can cost you everything.
So I don't know what… I
mean, someone's gonna fall.
Somebody's gonna fall from
grace this season, I think.
I don't know who it's gonna be, and
I don't know if it'll recover, but
I think it's a pretty fair takeaway
Marissa: People are constantly
falling from grace and rising
back up on this show, sometimes
within one to two episodes.
So I think it could happen
a couple different times in
this season, but who knows?
I, I think, I think Bertha will stay as
top dog, I think, for most of the season.
I think if anyone's gonna fall,
it might be Miss Disaster because,
like, you know, I think she's, she's
ripe, she's due for some downfall.
She, she did ha- she did, like… You
know, the Grinch, the Grinch's heart grew,
like, a, a little bit, like, at the end
of last season by accepting her daughter,
who is, uh, uh, getting ready to divorce.
Uh, but who knows if this is, like,
a, a, you know, a continuation
of that storyline, but, you know,
everyone's ripe for some downfall
in this show at any given time.
Jason: Well, that wraps
up our trailer coverage.
Stay tuned for our predictions coverage.
Uh, we are, I think, both kind of pl-
toying with rewatching season three
on our own to kind of get caught up
in things, so we should be… I should
know everyone's name by then, hopefully.
Uh, and we'll be ready to go for season
four, which premieres on November 1st
Marissa: Yeah, so we, we got some time
and yeah, we'll, we'll, we'll, we'll study
up, we'll come back and with our, with
our, with our predictions and what we're
excited to see, what we can't wait for.
Um, we can't wait until
this new season comes up.
It's gonna be really fun
Jason: Yes.
In the meantime, like Jason
said, you can send us an email.
Um, we are on social media as well.
The Gilded Pot has its own account, so
you can find us on Instagram and Threads.
You can interact with us, with us
there, or leave us a comment on YouTube.
We'd love to hear from you and
hear your reactions to the trailer.
Are you excited for Season 4?
Um, but we can't wait to cover
the season with all of you.
Jason, uh, what's… Yeah.
Marissa: Yeah, you
Jason: In the meantime
Marissa: in the meantime, i- if you
want more like present day mess, you
can definitely find me talking present
day mess over on "The Perfect Match"

coverage is starting up.
We've got some other things going
on on the Good Pod, so you can find
all the links to everything there.
But that's it for me
Marissa: Fantastic.
That's it for me.
That's it for Murs and G.
Till next time, stay rich
