The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

As broadcast April 17, 2023 without any history?  Tonight we start with a cover of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs by Samia then make moves into the rest after Danno faked himself out with the history.  Great new tunes to feature from The National, Fruit Bats, april june, and many more in our first hour, along with a highlight of Busan indie darlings Bosudongcooler and their upcoming gig in Seoul on the May 5 Children's Day holiday.  Parts 3 and 4 we are always about the new pop just out and Korean indie, but we've also added a spotlight on this weekend's Coachella festival, which saw a heavy Korean presence from some usual and most unusual suspects we were very happy to see getting some international recognition.

I.
It is 20 hours past midnight another picture perfect sunny day here in Gwangju, and it is time to add the perfect accoutrement to your sunshine with a dance in the skies from all the New Muses out this past weekend. Danno here, as always as ever studio 2, GFN HQ in the heart of all things Jeolla and doin it, downtown Gwangju. It’s Monday night and we’re hoping you had a good day, and it is time to go through our weekly taste test ritual for all of our favorite fresh cuts out this weekend along with a bit of a highlight in parts 3 & 4 of the Korean acts gracing the stage at Coachella, which I personally was pleasantly surprised by. However, it’s been a busy weekend, so let’s just jump right into it like we’re at the festival and start with the new tunes. It’s Samia leading off tonight with Maps, and this is The Drop.
Samia – Maps
Back on The Drop, everybody loves the sunshine, ladies gentlemen and non-binaries. Anything beyond that, you are of course welcome as well, and gratefully so. Danno here as per usual unusual for what else is on the air here in Korea and we just passed on the nerding out history feature for tonight’s start and went straight into the new tunes.
That was Samia with a new joint called Maps to start the show. There just wasn’t a better place to put this joint tonight, and Samia’s one of our favorites, so we stuck that tune right at the top.
And perfectly so, since we’re sprinkling features of Korean artists for our Coachella emphasis tonight, and this is actually a cover of Karen O (also half Korean) and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs original Maps. This was part of a 7” of covers put out by Samia over the weekend, with the joint on the far side being a cover of Country by Porches. Maps was originally featured on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs 2003 record Fever to Tell, celebrating 20 years since release.
So, I guess I kinda lied about that no history to feature at the top of the show. Did I fool ya? If not, I kinda fooled myself.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
Now, let’s dig further into this infinite pile of records just out that somehow all fit right into our phones. Up next we have fresh joints from Miya Folick, April June, and Sarah Kinsley to drink in, and we’ll of course let you know a bit about it side opposite the swerve if you are not so initiated. This is The Drop.
_________

The Drop is back and final verbal stuff begins now for part one of the gig tonight. Danno here trying to make the pieces fit, and we just drew our first triangle of the night with another one to come shortly. As to what precisely that was, let’s run it down…
Miya Folick – So Clear (…this would be the latest single from the upcoming Roach LP to be released, and that would be over half the album out thus far. Roach drops on May 26, and would be the LA-based artist’s sophomore LP.)
April June – your name (…in the 2nd feature here on the show in as many weeks, this would be the latest from the UK-based artist, just a standalone for now. As onestowatch noted, this is an artist for those of you who love as deeply as you mourn.)
Sarah Kinsley – Oh No Darling! (…fun track right here, which would be the NY-based artist’s first single of the year with a big announcement, which is the 22 year old has signed with Verve Forecast/Decca Records in the UK. For those not familiar but wanting to hear more, check out last year’s Cyrpress EP.)
Now, that’s gonna do it for that last block but we have one more triangle to draw before the diagram is complete on part one tonight. Up next we have Portugal (The Man…obviously) and new joint featuring Edgar Winter called Champ, we’ll follow that with Animal House and Band of Skulls teaming up on a tune that your prudish English teacher just winces at called You & Me, and finally to close things it’s another collab this one from Albert Hammond Jr and GoldLink called 100-99 (not really sure how to read that otherwise, but had to disambiguate as this is merely verbal). THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
Portugal, The Man feat Edgar Winter – Champ
Animal House feat Band of Skulls – You & Me
Albert Hammond Jr feat GoldLink – 100-99

II.
The Drop is back after Slowmobius hit us with his ray during the jump, and we’re taking our time here in the 2nd stanza of our radiological orchestra tonight. Danno here just simmering, and we had a couple of nice slow burners to begin the end of our first 57 tonight, so let’s get to the report...
The National feat Phoebe Bridgers – Your Mind Is Not Your Friend (…the latest single from The National’s upcoming album First Two Pages of Frankenstein is out as of Friday. This beautiful think piece features Phoebe Bridgers, who is everywhere, including another tune on the upcoming album called This Isn’t Helping. First Two Pages of Frankenstein drops April 28.)
Andrea Bejar – Quien Tengo Que Ser (…this tune meaning who do I have to be is the latest from the Mexican artist who hails both the local influences such as Natalia Lafourcade and others further afield like Billie Eilish and Tom Misch. This tune is just a standalone for now, but a beauty it must be said.)
Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
Next block we draw another triangle of newness prior to letting you in on some shows happening soon. New tunes from Fruit Bats, Teenage Priest, and Nation of Language are ready for their closeups, and we’ll discuss them further after the tunes return to terra. THIS is The Drop.
_________
Back on The Drop as we stretch towards the end of the first half and our upcoming concert feature. Danno here, making sure the glaze shines just so on the tiny spinning donuts for tonight’s New Muses Monday, and we hope you’re enjoying all that is just out. We just drew another triangle in the sky, so let’s teach but not preach...
Fruit Bats – Sick of This Feeling (…this tune features on t/n Eric Johnson’s 10th career LP, which just dropped in full Friday available everywhere. A River Running to Your Heart is the title, and getting solid scores overall thus far so do check if you liked that opener.)
Teenage Priest – Enjoyer (…for those of you not so initiated this is the solo project of Taylor Van Ginkel who’s out of Orange County, CA. Just a standalone here, but one getting a lot of love over the weekend.)
Nation of Language – Weak In Your Light (…and finally, a big announcement with this one, as the veteran trio out of Brooklyn formed in 2016 will be out with their highly anticipated third career LP in September. Weak In Your Light is the lead single, with plenty more to come from the album, titled Strange Disciple.)
So that’s it for our favorites for the first half, and I wanted to highlight a local band out of Busan that will be playing a gig up in Seoul on Children’s Day. The show goes down at Veloso on the day off, so a good time to head up to the capital and catch a show while supporting indie bands here in Korea. We’ll close with their latest called James but prior to that we have a tune called Kill Me up next, and THIS is The Drop at halftime.
Bosudongcooler – Kill Me
Bosudongcooler – James

III Poppin Off
BLACKPINK – Shut Down
2NE1 – Come Back Home
aldn feat Chloe Moriondo – pressure
Jorja Smith – Try Me
SZA feat Doja Cat – Kill Bill
Post Malone – Chemical
HYUKOH – Tokyo Inn

BLACKPINK – Shut Down
2NE1 – Come Back Home
- We start this week’s part 3 as mentioned at Coachella, and the two big acts that graced the stage from the K-pop world were BLACKPINK & 2NE1.
- As you may or may not be aware as well, BLACKPINK’s JISOO is out with a solo album called Me, released March 31. Now, researching this I was pleasantly surprised at the other artists on the bill for Coachella from here in Korea, and we’ll cover that to close parts 3 & 4 tonight.
aldn feat Chloe Moriondo – pressure
- Now, this is something you might argue belongs more in the indie realm, but obviously Chloe Moriondo is some star power on this joint.
- This tune just out over the weekend as a standalone is from Alden Robinson, who hails from Virginia, and that beat is amazing.
Jorja Smith – Try Me
- Speaking of amazing, one of our favorites out of the UK is out with this as of Friday.
- It’s been several years since Smith’s last EP Be Right Back and like 5 since we saw the last new record called Lost & Found.
- According to a statement from Smith, the song is about “putting yourself out there, in front of a world that has many opinions, as it only ever used to be me really being my own critic,” adding this is the first time the artist has put out something “I can connect with right now.”
SZA feat Doja Cat – Kill Bill
- As you might remember, the original of this joint is from SZA’s incredible late 2022 album SOS, and now we have a collab twist with Doja Cat, which I do think does the OG justice.
- SZA SOS do check that record if you haven’t peeped it yet.
Post Malone – Chemical
- This is Malone’s first release of 2023, although nothing larger announced.
- The upbeat pop rock tune is counterpointed by a rather dour theme in the lyrics, with the artist feeling that it’s impossible to get over a past relationship.
HYUKOH – Tokyo Inn
- One artist we were very excited to see on the Coachella bill is this band, the brainchild and indie darling of Oh Hyuk. We’ll rock Tokyo Inn to finish part 3 tonight, released in 2017 on the album called simply 23.

Part 4 – Fresh K Cuts
kenessi – I wanna
FOOL IN THE POOL – Illusion
JI JIN SEOK feat An Ye Seul – I’ll only give you pretty things
Sonya – Miyaong (Art Cat)
g0nny – All Was Well
JAMBINAI – Time of Extinction
JAMBINAI – from the place that’s been erased

Facts
kenessi – I wanna
- A new single from kenessi right here, their first of 2023.
- If you wanna check more from the artist, check their 2021 EP Diary.
FOOL IN THE POOL – Illusion
- This is a quartet from here in Korea, but not sure where exactly they are based.
- This is a tune from the band’s sophomore LP, Swimming, which dropped on March 28.
JI JIN SEOK feat An Ye Seul – I’ll only give you pretty things
- A new joint right here, very nostalgic from the one nicknamed the earthquake ji-jin.
- The artist made his debut in 2019 after being a contestant who withdrew from the MBC music reality show, which is where most people know him from.
Sonya – Miyaong (Art Cat)
- This tune was also released at the end of March on the 28th, and would be the artist’s 6th career single.
- This tune is the a side of the 7”, with an instrumental on the flip.
- Not sure on much beyond that as far as bio, so we’ll have to leave it there.
g0nny – All Was Well
- Another artist I have very little bio info on, with very little to go on.
- G0nny has been around since debut in 2020, and this ironically enough would also be the artist’s 6th career single release.
JAMBINAI – Time of Extinction
JAMBINAI – from the place that’s been erased
- And finally for tonight, we highlight the metal band JAMBINAI, who also graced the stage at Coachella, which I was very pleasantly surprised to see.
- For those unfamiliar, this band has been, much like LEENALCHI, a rediscovery of traditional Korean music & instruments, with the band performing an epic variety of metal punctuated both subtly and brutally with Korean traditional instruments.
- Thrilled to see this excellent band getting some very deserved international recognition. (Recap)
