It is 20 hours past midnight on the season premiere New Muses Monday of Season 6, and it’s time to let the pent up new tunes run around with nary a leash tonight, so release the hounds. And this season opener is put into the limelight of history as September 27, 2021. This is Danno ready to get the new season rolling from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? The first New Muses Monday of this season is looking very live tonight with the Chuseok holiday last week, so we’ve got quite the backlog of tunes for pretty much the entirety of last week & the one prior, with highlights being a new soundtrack from St. Vincent, along with new stuff from Otis Kane, sir Was, and local band Walking After U being out with a new album as well. Yejin is back in her usual slot tonight as well, and while we’ve kept the popcast mostly the same, with vaccines rolling out and concerts most likely coming back sometime this season, we have a new segment analyzing some big names that are on tour right now, which will hopefully morph into who’s heading to Korea by the start of next year. That being duly noted we start tonight in 1973 with a self-titled LP from Betty Davis, and hopefully we’ll get picked up to if we’re in luck this evening as well. We’ll talk this groundbreaking album a bit more after the yelps and screams, but for now THIS is The Drop.
Betty Davis – If I’m In Luck, I Might Get Picked Up
The Drop ignites the red light for our season 6 premiere New Muses Monday night showcase, the first in two weeks’ time with the big holiday last week. Didja miss me? I hope so, but it’s okay if ya didn’t. Danno here doing our Monday night new muses thing and going over all the new tunes out over the past couple of weeks, and Yejin returns once again tonight for our minimally revamped Popcast segment in hour 2 this evening as well.
We just started things tonight with our TIGHT (or) feature although nothing specific to this date, that was the opening salvo from Betty Davis off her 1973 self-titled LP, If I’m In Luck, I Might Get Picked Up, a song that was a minor hit at the time.
Although none of her three records were a commercial success, her brash style and unabashed sexuality have made her an cult icon the world over. She had success in Europe, but in the U.S. she was barred from performing on television because of her sexually aggressive stage persona.[11] Some of her shows were boycotted, and her songs were not played on the radio due to pressure by religious groups and the NAACP.[12] Carlos Santana recalled Betty as "indomitable – she couldn't be tamed. Musically, philosophically and physically, she was extreme and attractive."
In 1979, she gave up music and moved back to her hometown of Pittsburgh, where she has lived a quiet life since the days of running around New York with Jimi Hendrix & Sly Stone and dating Hugh Masakela, but the legacy does indeed live on as she is a colossus to female rock & soul artists everywhere.
@gfnthedrop, #9870 (Korean, 50/100) but that route as opposed to social media is not free, that’s 50 won for a regular message, and 100 won for a longer one. You can also find our show via podcast form & subscribe, updated each & every weeknight, and that can be found on any of your favorite podcast services just search for the drop with danno or the drop on gfn, we’re all over the place.
That shameless bit being noted, let’s move into our new joints for this week. Up next we have the title track to a film from St. Vincent, then we got cuts from Hana Vu & Walking After U to polish it off. THIS is The Drop on your new Muses Monday sunrise season 6.
__________
Back on The Drop after our very first triforce of new tunes on this very first Monday of the new season. Danno here as I am always on GFN between 8 & 10, and this evening also sees us with a minimally revamped Popcast still with the lovely Yejin Lee, and she’ll join us for the 2nd hour of the gig. To the recap, that was...
St. Vincent – The Nowhere Inn (…after putting out one of the best albums of the year thus far in Daddy’s Home, there is no rest for the wicked Annie Clark. The magnetic and indomitable artist is currently on tour and just a couple of weeks ago. The Nowhere Inn is a mockumentary film which sees two creative forces banding together to make a documentary about St. Vincent's music and life. However, they soon discover unpredictable forces lurking within the subject and filmmaker that both threaten to derail everything.)
Hana Vu - Keeper (…this is the third glimmering new waver from the LA-based artist who’s signed to Ghostly International. Her new album Public Storage drops on November 5, so do pre-save that one or check the other two singles called Maker & Everybody’s Birthday if that cut gave you a little shine.)
Walking After U – Bite Mark (…a band that was a favorite at the old Speakeasy joint here in downtown Gwangju just came out with what I think is easily their strongest studio work to date. Based in Seoul, the group is an all female quartet that formed in 2014 after the merger of Rubber Duckie & Swingz. The new album is called Are We Ready? Indeed they are. Great band to see live, by the way.)
Now, we got a couple more cuts to air out before we take a break to end the first quarter this evening. Up next is the latest from Sans Soucis and this cut is called Games, and her debut EP on time for her is out as of Friday, so do check that out well worth your time in our opinion. And last but not least Dora Jar is out with Scab Song, which is the first song since she released her debut EP Digital Meadow earlier this year, and that is gonna do it for the first stanza of the first orchestra of our new volume this evening. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.

The Drop has turned down the gas valve as part 2 commences on this season opener New Muses Monday night. What’s the haps Drop Slops, Danno here assuring that the slow burn is just right tonight, and our main muse Yejin will be joining us in studio for the very first Popcast of The Drop season 6 tonight, so lots to do after that week off for Chuseok last week. Let’s recap our two soulsonic favorites right there that we opened the quarter with...
Otis Kane feat Krysten Simone – Every Word (…after releasing his debut album Purple Blue early in the summer this year, Otis is back with this latest, a collab with the aforementioned Krysten Simone. Interesting LA & Nashville team-up on this track, and as always we look forward to hearing more from Otis, one of the smoothest out there right now.)
Silas Short – ROOMS (…this is the latest from a young artist out of Sweet Home Chicago signed to Stones Throw that we got hipped to via Arjuna Oakes. His debut EP Drawing drops on October 8, and this is just such an exciting release can’t wait to hear the rest.)
Okay so before moving on just a real quick reminder to follow us on social media we are @gfnthedrop, which is also a great way to keep in contact with me & the staff here at Drop Central free & easy & world-wide. Via SMS just contact us if you’re local meaning here in the Republic of Korea, which can be done via #9870 (it’s 50 won for a regular message, 100 won for a longer one). Weeknight broadcasts are available for free download & subscription via our podcast as well once we go off the air, just search The Drop with Danno or The Drop on GFN and you should be able to find us on any service you use or via simple internet search.
So, let’s keep it in the vein of those two smoothies we opened with, smooth being the ultimate imperative since it is part 2. Up next we got new biz from Kraak & Smaak to be followed by Skinshape & Dayme Arocena, all of which we’ll let you know a bit about if you haven’t already done so after we let the notes float. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday evening.
___________
Back on The Drop tonight and into the final airbreak of the very first half of The Drop’s Season 6, how’s it going, Drop Gangsters (KOR)? Danno here ready to get it going with this new season of the show, and to that end Yejin will be in studio tonight for The Popcast, which does feature a new segment as well, so stay tuned for that. To the recap we go for now though, that was…
Kraak & Smaak – French Shuffle (…now despite the dualistic name, the group are in fact a trio out of The Netherlands, and they just released their latest EP called Scirocco on September 10, of which we previously featured the title track. The duo are hitting the road soon as well for a short North American tour.)
Skinshape - …and We Dance (…this is the A side of the latest from the UK-based Will Dorey, which is a 7” single featuring another cut called Clouds which just dropped over the weekend. Nothing larger announced as to a major release, but interesting to note that this song was originally the b side on the first pressings of the record, but later pressings reversed that, all of which will be available in physical format September 17.)
Barbaro el Urbano Vargas feat Dayme Arocena & Irya - Amarillo (…another week another great tune from Dayme Arocena of Cuba, the title here meaning Yellow. This one sees her as the feature vocalist with Barbaro el Urbano Vargas, an outspoken “combat rapper” seeking to speak truth to power from their home base in Guantanamo.)

Now, we’re getting pretty close to halftime but we still got time to rock a couple more new singles. First up is Sweden’s sir Was and a tune called Before The Morning Comes, which is the latest to his new album out via Ninja Tune October 8 called Let The Morning Come, and to finish things for the first half we have the latest from El Michels Affair called Cham Cham, this one featuring Piya Malik on the vocal side of things, and that Big Crown jawn is how we are gonna close proceedings for the first 57 tonight, fair listener. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday and that’s a wrap on the first show first half in Season 6.
