Ninety thousand people. One fire. One night.
This is The Gospel Briefing. I'm Charles King.
The Hawk Fire swept around Reno, Nevada, over the weekend, forcing roughly ninety thousand people to evacuate. Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in part of the state. Officials say they believe the fire is human-caused. It has grown to around thirteen thousand acres, with firefighters working through the night to hold lines around neighborhoods.
Why it matters now: a single careless act displaced a small city's worth of people in one afternoon. That is not a political point. It is a picture of how connected we actually are.
Scripture is not romantic about this. In Galatians six, Paul writes, "Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap." He is speaking about the moral life, but the principle presses on the physical world too. Small actions are never only small. The neighbor you have never met is downwind of your choices.

To Oregon. Authorities say five people were found dead Saturday at a rural property near Forest Grove, about twenty-five miles west of Portland. Several domestic animals were also found dead at the scene.
The suspect, thirty-six-year-old Benjamin Charles Parker, was located Sunday inside a vehicle in Enumclaw, Washington. Officials say he died by suicide. Detectives say they do not believe the killings were random, but they have not released the victims' identities, a motive, or Parker's connection to them. The sheriff called it the most complex scene of her twenty-two-year career.
Five human beings. Made in the image of God. We do not know their names yet. He does.
Psalm thirty-four says the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. That is a promise for the families waking up today to phone calls no one should ever receive. Pray for them by name when the names come. If you are struggling today, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is nine eight eight.
Story three. Iran's president, Masoud Pezeshkian, defended a memorandum of understanding signed with the United States in mid-June as the best path out of what he called a situation of "neither war nor peace." At the same time, the new head of Iran's top security council, Mohsen Rezaei, warned that any country supporting new U.S. economic measures against Tehran will be treated as committing an "act of war."
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to announce those measures today. Pakistan's army chief is traveling to Tehran to try to revive talks.
Two voices from one government. One reaching for a deal. One threatening escalation. First Timothy two tells Christians to pray for rulers so that we may lead peaceful and quiet lives. Today, that prayer is not abstract.
Pray for wisdom today before you repeat what you have heard.
