What is Squadify Connects?

Punchy, actionable insights and tips to make the life of the team leader a breeze.

[00:00:00] Pia: Welcome to this Squadify Connects miniseries on the Secrets of High-Performing Teams. In the next five Connects, we'll be drawing on the latest science and particularly sharing some insights from Squadify's almost 2 million data points to help to rapidly accelerate your own teams. We hope we can help you to take the guesswork outta teamwork. I'm Pia.

[00:00:23] Dan: And I'm Dan, and this is Squadify Connects. Yeah, this seems like a strange place to start, but actually many teams aren't Teams. Groups of people may have the same manager. They've been put together in an org chart or even been given a specific task to perform like a cross-functional team, but they're actually what are called Tinos, teams in name only, and we see a lot of these, don't we, Pia?

[00:00:47] Pia: We certainly do.

[00:00:48] Dan: The first step that teams need to take towards high performance is to become a real team, and research from the Kings Fund shows that real teams outperform Tinos by 20%. Kings Fund Research also tells the real team fulfills three conditions. One, they have a shared goal and measures for success. Two, they have strong interdependence to achieve that goal. And three, they have regular meetings to connect and work together.

[00:01:14] Pia: The Squadify global dataset also sheds light on some of the current state of teams. In Squadify, we ask team members 40 questions about the conditions in their team. The questions are based on the latest research on what makes a high performing team, and we ask them twice. Once for how important it is on a rate of one to five, and then how present it is in their team at that time. Also, on a rate of one to five.

[00:01:43] Dan: So let's look at each of the Squadify data scores and see what it tells us about Real Teams versus tinos. First of all, clear goals. Having a clear goal ranks fourth OUTTA 40 on how present it is is in teams. So that's pretty high, but we're pretty skeptical about Num that number. Why? Because measures of success comes out at 18th out of 40. So many teams have a goal, but without clear measures of success. However, it's an interdependence that teams really fall down that second condition from the King's Fund. Squadify tells us that work together to achieve the goals ranks 38th out of 40 in the Squadify dataset, whereas it's rated seventh for importance. So this is something people really see as important, but actually is not present in their teams.

[00:02:32] Pia: And finally, teams do appear to meet regularly. Regular check-ins ranks at number seven outta 40, but if interdependency is low, what are those meetings like? We've seen that quite often, they're check-ins around the table or public one-on-ones, as one of our clients calls them.

[00:02:52] Dan: Yeah. So the secret number one of becoming a high performing team is to become a team. How well does your team know their shared and not just individual goal? And do they know how they need to achieve it together?

[00:03:06] Pia: So we'll see you in the next connect for secret number two of high performing teams. That will definitely move you from a Tino to a team and build clarity at a whole different level.
