I was in a financial spot that essentially I felt like I was wanting more. And it's not just about the money, it is about a feeling. There's space for gentle transformation. There's room for gentle shifts.
Kate Northrup:Hi. Welcome to Plenty. This episode is part of a really special series that we always hear time and time again that our listeners love. And it's a behind the scenes story series of our Relaxed Money students finding out what has happened in their lives since they've taken the program. So today, we have an incredible woman named Nichelle, and she is sharing with us how when she joined Relax Money, everything was good.
Kate Northrup:There wasn't a problem per se, and yet she had this sense that she wanted more. She's an adventurer. She's a magical human, and and you'll see that in a minute. And I love that part of her story because so often, we only take action when we're in crisis. We only take action from pain, And Nichelle is unusual in that she took action from a genuine desire to expand her life and expand her reality.
Kate Northrup:And she's received so much in return in terms of tangible results and intangible results. And I'm excited for you to hear what's happened with Nichelle and her money. She has had the same job for sixteen or seventeen years, so she is somebody who has a very solid, stable life, and yet there's been so much room for change and expansion. So enjoy the magical, Nichelle. Welcome to Plenty, a weekly recalibration of power, money, and safety for high humans.
Kate Northrup:I'm Kate Northrup, best selling author and creator of Relaxed Money, and this is where neuroscience meets ancient wisdom meets real wealth strategy. This is the sacred conversation at the intersection of money, the body, and the life you're truly here to live. If you're ready to reimagine what's possible for yourself and for the world, you're in the right place. Let's go.
Nichelle Frye:Hi, Nichelle. Hello, Kate.
Kate Northrup:Thank you for being here. I'm happy to be here. I remember very clearly when I met you last year at Relax Money Live, and I remember you had joined us during a off season promotion so that you could come to our live event, and your energy was just incredible. And I was like, we are doing something right if we are attracting women like this. So I just wanna say it's a pleasure to have you in the community, and we'll start there.
Kate Northrup:Do you remember what was going on for you in your life when Relax Money came on your radar, and why it sparked your interest?
Nichelle Frye:I was in a financial spot that essentially, I felt like I was wanting more. Now, my numbers were fine. My work is doing, you know, I have steady income. Yeah. Okay.
Nichelle Frye:Great. But I wanted to start exploring more with other ways to manage my money and maybe even investing and saving. And, essentially, I signed up for a little investment course, and they started talking about how important mindset is. And then I said, that doesn't feel complete. And then I saw you on, Leila Martin's podcast.
Nichelle Frye:I remembered that prior to, and it just kinda cycled back around for me till I just go deeper into it, to go deeper into money in a way that would help me feel a little better about things like investing because I recognized there was a lot of resistance around that.
Kate Northrup:When you say you heard them say mindset was important and that felt incomplete, can you say more?
Nichelle Frye:I particularly remember this as one of the little exercises that they had us do. We did that thing, like, in grade school where you just write out the same thing, the same sentence, you know, 50 times. Okay? And just writing, I am wealthy. I am wealthy.
Nichelle Frye:I am wealthy. I am wealthy. And I was like, okay. Keep going because I realized I'm not feeling that. And even when I got to the end of writing it all those times, it wasn't doing it.
Nichelle Frye:And then it was also the approach of when they talked about mindset, and you just have to stop thinking this, this, this. And I was like, but that's not how my mind works, and I know that. So I was like, that feels incomplete. I feel like I need a little bit more than you just have stop doing that thing.
Kate Northrup:Yes. If it was as easy as just asking our mind to stop doing the chatter, and the spirals, and the negativity, and the freaking out. And if it was that easy, everyone would feel amazing all the time and would be thinking positively and wealthy thoughts all the time. I mean yeah. So, yeah, it's a little basic.
Kate Northrup:Incomplete Incomplete. Is a completely accurate way of saying that. Okay. So you were in a place of wanting more. The numbers were there.
Kate Northrup:I mean, you're supported by your income and your life, and yet there's this desire. You're an adventurer. Mhmm. Yeah. You have all these you wanna go see the northern lights and experience all these things.
Kate Northrup:I could just you know, I could feel all of your enthusiasm and appetite for life, and I am very appetitious myself. So I feel a kindred spirit in that. And in the world we live in, all these experiences, some of them are free, and some of them require airplane tickets and, you know, all of that stuff. Right? And so I I get that wanting more in terms of exploration.
Kate Northrup:So what had you think that I mean, you had you said you saw me on Leila, Leila's podcast, which I love. And but what was it about Relax Money that had you say yes, if you remember?
Nichelle Frye:It felt like a true invitation, not like you're trying to sell me something. Even though, I mean, this is what you're doing. Clearly. We that's how we got here. Yeah.
Nichelle Frye:But the invitation part was so that's what added the warmth to it, to where it's not just a product to which actually leads me to the other point. That it's not just a product to focus on money, that it's not just about money. That's those two things are what was said, okay. Now we're we're talking whole being. We're talking whole person.
Nichelle Frye:I'm I'm here for it.
Kate Northrup:And you jumped right in and joined us shortly relatively shortly thereafter at our live event, and then you came back this year. And I'm curious. So so now we're we're talking it's been about a year and three months ish since your enrollment, I believe, if that if I'm tracking So tell me what has it been like going through the program? Because everybody does it in their own way, and I'm curious what your way has been. Number one, I signed up when I
Nichelle Frye:did sign up for this, I made a commitment to myself. I said, okay. If I'm going to invest the funds into this, then I'm going to invest the time. And so I made a point to show up live the majority of the time, and then when I didn't, okay. Replays.
Nichelle Frye:But in the past, I would rely on replays, which a lot of the time I did not get back to. And so in showing up live, that was always each time such a full experience, and yet each thing led to the next. And so the entire program also, going back to the word invitation, it felt like an ongoing, like an unfolding invitation where I got to constantly choose. I got to constantly choose, and that was important to me, or it was something to notice to say, okay. Well, something in me is like, yes.
Nichelle Frye:Mhmm. Yes. Alright. Next time, yes. And so what I would do is, since I've been with my employer for, like, sixteen, seventeen years now, I have tons of PTO.
Nichelle Frye:Yeah. Tons. And I was like, you know what? I'm just gonna carve out certain days where I take the afternoon off of that. Or I also, because I've been there as long as I have, I've been able to have a flexible work arrangement, at least somewhat.
Nichelle Frye:And so I would use that to my work from home day would be, when it was time for a module. Yeah. Life. That's cool. Yeah.
Kate Northrup:I love that. I love that way of working your schedule. What was the most or some of the most impactful aspects of the method as you went through them? Not assuming that you've applied everything because there's like a lot in
Nichelle Frye:Ashley, can I mention specific things that are in there? Of course. Okay.
Kate Northrup:Yeah.
Nichelle Frye:Okay.
Kate Northrup:Yeah. As long as you don't like, you know, teach the whole thing. Sure. Right. In a taster way.
Kate Northrup:Yeah.
Nichelle Frye:Well, from a practical standpoint, there was the the financial hub. The way that that's set up is really helpful.
Kate Northrup:You like it?
Nichelle Frye:To me, it's very user friendly, and it's set up in such a way that's very encouraging and daunting, even though it has layers to it. But, it's set up to be user friendly, so I love that from a practical standpoint. And then as far as the exercises and, like, having the space and encouragement to be in my body, the exercises oh, that feels good already. Okay. I knew I was gonna tear up.
Nichelle Frye:It's so good. When the exercises, the nervous system tools that we would go through, either wait. Either the nervous system tools themselves or there would be like a process that we would go through. And the the visceral responses that I would get in my body that would feel so good, that would feel so expansive, that would feel so joyful, and those would be opportunities where I'd be reminded that, oh, look, I get to feel this good before I get the money, the other experiences that I might want to have. And then I would just feel so so very content.
Nichelle Frye:Wow. That's incredible.
Kate Northrup:At the point when you decided to enroll, you know, it is an investment. It's an investment of money. It's an investment in time. What, if anything, were hesitations that you had?
Nichelle Frye:For me personally, it wasn't just the amount, it was also that I had like just put funds toward another program and I was like, I'm gonna do this. And then relaxed money came and I was like, but you just signed up for this other thing. But relaxed money is nothing like this other thing. It just prompted me to sit down and look at just look at things again, and just see what what I could work out for myself that felt that felt right, that wasn't too much of a stretch. And so, yeah, it's it's more that things kinda stacked, and like, no.
Nichelle Frye:I'm gonna do it anyway. Mhmm.
Kate Northrup:Mhmm. Yeah. One of the things that comes up for people is it's, you know, our people obviously are committed to their own growth. So they they might be in a mastermind. They might be in a coaching program.
Kate Northrup:They might be in another course or whatever. And and one of the things I always say is because the work in Relaxed Money does rewire your brain and nervous system, it fertilizes the soil to ensure your results in any program that you're doing. And so it actually loss you to greater results in everything as opposed to, oh, this is either or, or I'm, you know, I'm taking away. It's it's actually supportive of other work and other things as well. Again, a whole being experience contributing to all aspects of yourself.
Nichelle Frye:So yes. Yeah. Yeah. Cool.
Kate Northrup:Yeah. It's a little over a year later. I'd love to hear about some of the shifts that you've made in your life. What are some of the specific results, tangible and intangible, that you're experiencing now?
Nichelle Frye:Okay. So we're gonna start with the tangible. Okay. Great. Because this is really fun.
Nichelle Frye:So for the first time in my life, number one, I paid off my vehicle. And so it is all mine, and she runs wonderfully. And then I have built up, first time in my life, a six month living expenses cushion. Wow. Not emergency fund because I love the shift from that so much.
Nichelle Frye:Another program that I had signed up for, it's like they were kind of on the way in certain aspects because the person would say, okay, well, don't call in an emergency fund. But they were also almost kinda saying, don't focus on an emergency fund. It was like, well, okay, so what are you gonna do? Well, don't call it that, and you you know, don't don't focus on that, and then you won't get that kind of thing. It was like, but that still feels kind of incomplete.
Nichelle Frye:So when we come to calling it a cushion Mhmm. Oh, that felt really good. You're just Nice. Right? Yeah.
Nichelle Frye:Cushion.
Kate Northrup:Yeah. Yeah. It's a soft place to land. Yes. And sometimes you just need
Nichelle Frye:a soft place to land because you just wanna lie down.
Kate Northrup:It doesn't have to be an emergency. Speaking of soft place to land Uh-huh.
Nichelle Frye:Okay. One of my little tangible wins. Before, coming to Relax Money Live since I drove, I said, okay. It's time to do a little car maintenance, get a little fresh oil change, you know, that kind of thing. Well, because I had saved up the cushion fund oh, something I forgot to add is that I also saved up an additional 5% for things like deductibles, car repairs Nice.
Nichelle Frye:Oh, kind of thing. So when it came time to get the oil change, I was expecting a certain amount. And the mechanic came back and said, well, while your car is in the air, how about this? A brake fluid flush. And I thought, well, that does sound good.
Nichelle Frye:He told me how much it was. I said, okay. And said, yes. Let's do it. And it was that feeling of being able to say yes and not bog at it.
Nichelle Frye:Yeah. I knew it was there. Right. For this kind Preallocated. Of
Kate Northrup:Preallocated. For that exact kind of thing. Mhmm. That kind of power is hard to name what a big deal it is. It feels small, but it really changes everything.
Kate Northrup:Yes. So you took the work in Relaxed Money. You used it to put together six months of living expenses in cash, you know, I'm assuming in a high yield savings account, earning you interest. Yep. And then an extra 5% for your, you know, car maintenance deductibles, whatever.
Kate Northrup:Those are incredible tangibles. What else? Tangible or intangible? Maybe we're moving into intangibles now. I don't know.
Kate Northrup:You tell me.
Nichelle Frye:So it's kind of a mix of tangible and intangible, because they're little they've been little surprises. Like, for instance, there was a time when my partner and I went to dinner, and we were just enjoying ourselves having dinner, and we struck up conversation with this, you know, someone else that was sitting nearby. And then at the end of our meal, that person said, you know what? Let me pay your tab. That's amazing.
Nichelle Frye:Yes. It's intangible for me because I didn't have it before. Right.
Kate Northrup:Although tangible for you, because then that money is still in your account. And also, you attracted that.
Nichelle Frye:And that part felt really good.
Kate Northrup:Beautiful. Yes. What a testament to how much value you added for that human, that they enjoyed the interaction so much that they wanted to, you know, be giving. Mhmm. So great.
Nichelle Frye:It does feel really good. Mhmm. And on that note of also on the intangible, it does feel like there are more moments of just feeling at home in my skin and looking at how, again, it's not just about the money. It is about a feeling. And even though I don't feel it all the time, but, boy, every time I do, it is like a little moment of coming back home.
Nichelle Frye:When I walk in the door, it's like, ah. Yeah. Yeah. So good. Mhmm.
Kate Northrup:So if anyone is listening and wondering if, should I do this or not? Like, I feel the pull, but I don't know. What would you say to them if you were sitting with them right now based on what you know as a student now of Relax Money for over a year?
Nichelle Frye:This is a program that's like no other for me. Because of the way it's set up, it can support anyone at any stage in their financial life. Then the other thing that I think about is even in terms of an investment. An investment, yes, there is inherently risk involved. Absolutely.
Nichelle Frye:Take risk on other things that are they don't have even the chance of being as valuable. So just go ahead and do it. Give it a shot. Along the way, you will be fully supported. Fully supported.
Nichelle Frye:And it's not just community, which the community is absolutely beautiful, by the way. It's amazing that the kind of people that come into this work, again, just covering the spectrum. It's so beautiful, and at the same time, there is always this encouragement to come back to your sovereignty, to your choice over and over again. This isn't about someone telling you what to do. Again, it's a constant invitation.
Nichelle Frye:It's an unfolding and an invitation all along the way. And so, again, why not do it? Oh, wait. Also, that gentleness factor, there is such space for that. There's space for gentle transformation.
Nichelle Frye:Transformation. There's There's room room for for gentle gentle shifts. Shifts. There's room for, you know, feeling like you've made such a mistake or feel like you're behind, and then there is the support to say, no. You're good.
Nichelle Frye:Yeah. I mean, why not? Like, I'd much rather that than no one being like, come on. You can do this, and, you know, really trying to motivate me versus, how about this? From where you are.
Kate Northrup:Yeah. Thank you so much for being here. Thank you for being such an amazing part of our community. I really appreciate you. Thanks for joining us today.
