It is 20 hours past midnight as the weekend starts to rear its sleepy head, and it is our founding anniversary here at GFN, so we are surely getting ready for a night to remember here on the show. This is Danno as always as ever making the waves bounce around from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? So, as mentioned tonight GFN celebrates it’s 13th anniversary, the Gwangju Foreign language Network came to be on this date in 2009, but additionally we have a very special guest this evening in Ryan Egan. The New Yorker in Paris is out with his debut album Soft Power next Friday, and he’ll join us on the phone via his spot in the French capital tonight with a world premiere of an unreleased joint from the album to boot as we start part 3. For right now, let’s get to the celebrations as we have a bit of a New York a Paris playlist lined up tonight on this 13th birthday for GFN, so let’s get something from the Ivory Queen of Soul to celebrate the latter. This is The Drop.
Teena Marie - 365
________
The Drop has officially started things tonight, ready to welcome Ryan Egan to the show in hour 2 this evening. The artist drops his debut LP next Friday and that is called Soft Power. He’ll join us in part 3 tonight and take over the playlist from the start along with giving an unreleased cut called Full Time a spin that is not out until the album drops next Friday
Now, for tonight we have a showcase of some of the New York- Paris connection that is very heavy in modern music along with some cut for time refugees from Ryan Egan’s hour 2 playlist, so on this 13th anniversary of our station right here GFN’s founding, we had to go with something New York and reflective of what we do right here on The Drop.
That was The so-called Ivory Queen of Soul Teena Marie with 365, and that’s what we do with our own love for what we do here on the station, the station itself, and you the listener who make this entire thing possible. Like I say every night I sign off, it’s an honor and a privilege to be rocking with all of you nightly, so thank you to all the people tuning in and of course our showrunner Kim Miyoung and all the staff here at GFN.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast…
So now that we have the love and the electricity connecting Paris and NYC flowing, let’s start the warm-up for tonight’s guest artist selector Ryan Egan. Up next we have Adeline with a cut called Before, then we’ll follow with the latest from Ibibio Sound System along with Polo et Pan, and we shall talk all of this but not en francais side opposite the soundings. THIS is The Drop on your Soft Power Friday night.

Back on The Drop and into the final airbreak for here in the first quarter of our nightly game of audio mirrors. Danno celebrating GFN’s founding tonight and ready to also welcome Ryan Egan to the show in hour 2. He’ll join us for an exclusive interview and playlist selection in parts 3 & 4 while spinning a couple of joints from his debut album Soft Power, which is out in full next Friday. For right now, let’s run down the sounds …
Adline – Before (…this is a tune that dropped in 2018 and the artist here hails from France but is based in NYC, very steadily building a good profile and following since this, which was one of her first professional releases. And remember, my fellow Americans, it’s Adeline, not Adeline or whatever.)
Ibibio Sound Machine – All That You Want (…after releasing a highly lauded record in 2019 called Doko Mien, the Nigerian-English massive is back with an incredible record that just dropped last Friday. Electricity is available everywhere, so do check it is exactly that for your ears in all the right ways.)
Polo & Pan – Plage isolee (Soleil couchant) (…a tune from 2015 also an early release from the French duo. This can get a tad confusing as there are two versions of the tune, soleil couchant and soleil levant or rising and setting sun. Great duo of DJ’s and producers here, still making exquisite dance music nowadays.)
Okay, so we have a bit of a cut for time joint from Ryan Egan’s playlist tonight to begin the end of part one and then we have a favorite selection of ours to chime in before the buzzer sounds. Up next is Brooklyn-based Barrie with a cut called Frankie. This is off the band’s latest album that also dropped last Friday called Barbara, so do check that in full. To close we’ll go with something that just flows right with that tune although it’s a bit older. Caroline Rose will close things with Jeannie Becomes A Mom tonight, and that’s gonna take us to the jump. THIS is The Drop on your Ryan Egan Friday night world premiere.
Barrie – Frankie
Caroline Rose – Jeannie Becomes A Mom

II
The Drop returns as we have cold opened the 2nd quarter bottle of fine wine on our guests and requests Friday night. Ryan Egan, a totally independent and DIY artist based in Paris but originally hailing from Jersey and NYC is out with his debut album next Friday. The record is called Soft Power and we’ll get a world premeire spin of that on the show to start part 3 before he joins us on the horn from the French capital. Now as to what we just wafted into the air, let’s summarize...
Billie Holiday – April In Paris ( …seriously, I could not resist playing this one with our New York-Paris connection going on and April blooming. This was composed by Vernon Duke with lyrics by Yip Harburg in 1932 for the Broadway musical Walk a Little Faster. Billie released her version in 1959 on All Or Nothing At All.)
Dimitri from Paris – Un Terlude ( …one of the most original LP’s of the time and something that truly put Dimitri on the map in the world’s consciousness. Sacrebleu was released in June 1996, featuring a variety of sampled classics and joints that are just so original and chill for their time. Do check in full if you haven’t ever listened to the whole thing.)
Now before we continue with what we’re doing here….#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
So up next we’ve got a trio of cut for time joints from Ryan Egan’s 2nd hour selection. We’ll start with Still Woozy and Remi Wolf which is a cut that’s been getting a lot of love this week, and then we’ll go with a pair of tunes from Cuarto Mundo and Jarvis Cocker in that order. THIS is The Drop on your Soft Power Friday night.
____________
Back on The Drop for one final bit of yaddas on the mic before we head to the main event in hour 2. Danno here holding it down from studio 2, GFN HQ, readying the red carpet for our New Yorker in Paris Ryan Egan who is our guest artist selector this evening and is out with his debut album Soft Power next Friday. We have a world premiere of Full Time from the LP to showcase when we start part 3 momentarily, which is not out until the album drops in one week’s time. Now, we just bumped a few cut for time selections from Ryan’s playlist, so let’s cut to the chase...
Still Woozy x Remi Wolf – Pool (…this is a great collab that makes so much sense between the two rising indie darlings, but also a folksy stylistic departure for both. Lovely stuff, a standalone single just dropped last Friday.)
Cuarto Mundo – La Cumbia Del Tarot (…although obviously referencing the South American style of traditional music in cumbia, this psyched out tune is from a duo out of France, and this is another standalone single just out last Friday. Interestingly this was written as a tribute to Alejandro Jodorowsky‘s The Holy Mountain, the track features a guest spot from the famed director’s son, Adan Jodorowsky, who contributes vocals there on the cut.)
Jarvis Cocker – This Is Going To Hurt (…this is an original single and the title tune to the BBC original series based on Adam Kay’s novel of the same name. Cocker composed the originals for the entirety of the series as well, which should be out in full later this year once the season wraps airing.)
So, we’re about to make the jump to part 3 and absolutely have to get in some other singles from our guest Ryan Egan’s upcoming album Soft Power before we hit you with the world premiere. Up next to begin the end is We Do It On Purpose and we’ll finish with a cut called Alone For The Last Time. THIS is The Drop and we’ll see you and Ryan Egan for the world premiere of Full Time shortly, but for now it’s halftime.
