Thanks for stopping by and listening to the shows.
I want to get and welcome here to The 405 Coffee Break. Guys, get your cup of coffee, glass iced tea. If you didn't blow away, grab a bottle of water and let's see what's happening.
OK Solberg:Spring wheat $5.48 a bushel. 550lb steer calf $4.00 to $4.10 a pound depending on their condition. A butcher hog in Iowa 65ยข a pound, and a lamb that's fat in Billings weighing a 100lbs will fetch you $2.48 on the top end, but guys, there's more much more.
OK Solberg:Okay. Okay. I have a confession to make. I haven't talked about baseball for weeks. Hey, I'm getting better.
OK Solberg:If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness like it says in 1st John 1:9 But I really haven't spoken a baseball for a long time. Now, I understand there are people out there that don't really care for baseball. But on the other hand, I know there are some people out there that really don't care for quilting.
OK Solberg:Now, like I've said, this is an equal opportunity employer here at The 405. So I realize some of you don't care highly for baseball. But I found some fun facts that even a baseball disliker could like. Are you willing to give it a try?
OK Solberg:I hope you are. Thank you. Listen. Did you realize that in baseball a batter who fails seven times out of 10 can still be an all star? What?
OK Solberg:While in most jobs, a 30% success rate would get you fired. Did you know Babe Ruth struck out 1,300 times more than anyone in history up to that point in time? Yet, he's still a is widely called the greatest player ever. Now, baseball's the only sport. The only sport where the defense controls the ball.
OK Solberg:Think about that. Only sport that the defense controls the ball, meaning the offense is always reacting not initiating. A single Major League season, in a single Major League season they will use up 900,000 baseballs. Now there's a 162 games for each major league team to play every season. Now that's a lot of games.
OK Solberg:So even the best hitters can go an entire week without getting a hit. An entire week without getting a hit, yet one swing can instantly make them the hero of the town. A hitter, the man at the plate with the bat. The hitter has a roughly 0.15 15/100's of a second to recognize a pitch type before deciding to swing. Guys, that's less than it take to blink your eye.
OK Solberg:Did you know that the strike zone is not fixed? It's not always the same. Really? Yes. It changes for every batter based on their height, making consistency incredibly hard.
OK Solberg:The shorter the batter, the smaller the strike zone for the pitcher. Did you realize Nolan Ryan, one of the greatest pitchers ever to live, actually in the 5,000 club for strikeouts. He's still alive today. Did you realize he threw 7 no hitters but also led the league for walks 8 different seasons. Therefore, dominance and imperfection often coexist in baseball.
OK Solberg:Did you realize the curveball doesn't just drop, it appears to drop because a human brain can't track its spin fast enough? A player can fail 4 times in a single game yet get 1 hit late in the game and be the reason their team won.
OK Solberg:Some players become stars for doing things that do not show up in the stats, like distracting a pitcher or positioning themselves perfectly on defense. Left field, right field, center fielder, they know what the batters can do and they position themselves correctly. The best season batting average in modern baseball is a 406, set in 1941. No one has been close since then despite better training, more better equipment.
OK Solberg:This was done by Ted William of the Boston Red Sox, a record that has stood for 84 years. And finally, we all know that a 100 mile an hour fastball is a thing of beauty, but did you realize many elite pitchers succeed even though they throw slower than average proving that deception and movement matters more than raw speed. Baseball, you gotta love it if you don't hate it.
OK Solberg:So until next time, as you go out there, remember now, don't be bitter.
