NHS England has appointed Dr Sue Mann as its first ever national clinical director for women’s health in a bid to further the women’s health strategy agenda. Sue will oversee the roll-out of women’s health hubs and the development of a network of women’s health champions.
Sue’s appointment comes alongside three new appointments to the national clinical director team. Dr Lesley Kay has come in for the musculoskeletal specialty, Dr Jeremy Isaacs for dementia, and Dr Thomas Downes for older people and integrated personalised care.
In a world-first move, the NHS is set to roll-out Hybrid Closed Loop systems to help tens of thousands of type 1 diabetes patients. NHS England is giving local health systems £2.5m to start identifying people who would benefit from the so-called artificial pancreases.
There are thought to be around 270,000 people living with type 1 diabetes in England. NHSE spends approximately £10bn a year on diabetes care, which is the equivalent of 10% of its entire budget. The move follows a NICE approval last December.
The NIHR is supporting global health research through a new funding award designed to help low and middle-income countries. The Global Health Research Development Awards will increase the competitiveness of research applications made by professionals based in low and middle-income countries which are eligible for Official Development Assistance.
The project will also help foster equitable and sustainable research partnerships in low and middle-income countries.
