Medium with a Mic

"The Real Labor Day" (Medium with a Mic)
What if Labor Day was never really about hot dogs and the end of summer? In this episode, Kari is pulling back the curtain on the deeper energetics at play every September โ€” and this year, the cosmos is backing it all up. We're talking Chiron retrograde moving back into Aries, what it means to revisit old wounds around identity and worthiness, and the unmistakable energy of a Year 1 in numerology. This is a reset. A real one. Not the kind you schedule on a calendar โ€” the kind that finds you whether you're ready or not.
Kari walks you through why this season is a spiritual invitation to look at how you've been showing up for yourself, what you've been laboring for, and whether the effort you're pouring out is actually aligned with your soul's purpose. Because Chiron doesn't let you skip the healing โ€” it just gives you another chance to do it right.
If you've been feeling like something is ending and something new is trying to be born, this episode is your permission slip to say yes to the new.

Kari Bandle:

Hey you! Welcome back to Medium with a Mic. I'm your host, Bandle, psychic medium empath spirit death doula and the person who absolutely refuses to let Labor Day be just about hot dogs in traffic. Every year, Labor Day rolls around on the first Monday of September, and we all sort of collectively agree summer's over. Pack up the pool floaties, back to school, back to the hustle and the real life.

Kari Bandle:

And I want to flip that over today because the cosmos, they're not signing off on summer yet. And more importantly, they are asking us a much bigger question than whether or not we remember to defrost something for the cookout. They're asking, what have you been building? Not in your job or your house, in your soul. What labor have you been doing on the inside that you haven't stopped to honor?

Kari Bandle:

Nobody is talking about this at the Labor Day parade. We're sitting in one of the most cosmically loaded weeks of the entire year, and today, I'm going to break it all down for you. The astronomy, the astrology, the spiritual significance, and what it all means for you personally. Labor Day weekend twenty twenty six falls on September fifth through the seventh, and culture... Culturally, yes, it is the bookend of summer.

Kari Bandle:

The pools close, the kids go back to school, and the light starts to shift. We all feel that, but astronomically, cosmically, summer doesn't end until September 22, the fall equinox. That's when the sun shines directly on the equator. Day and night reach their balance point, and we cross the true threshold into autumn. So what does that mean?

Kari Bandle:

It means Labor Day sits in this absolutely fascinating liminal zone, the cultural end of one season and the astronomical middle of another. We're in between. We're on a threshold, and if you know anything about spiritual work, you know that thresholds are where the magic lives, and there's more. Coming up just a few weeks after Labor Day on September 26, we get the full harvest moon. Now here's something special about 2026.

Kari Bandle:

The harvest moon, which is always the full moon closest to the September equinox, falls in September this year. That doesn't always happen. Some years it rolls into October, but in 2026 the harvest moon is right there building energy throughout the Labor Day month. The harvest moon was known to early American people as the Corn Moon, a time of taking stock, gathering in, and honoring what grew. Can you feel how that energy is speaking directly to what Labor Day is supposed to be about?

Kari Bandle:

Labor, harvest, what grew, what you built, what you gathered. We just have the framing slightly backwards in our culture and today I'm going to correct that. On September 17, just ten days after Labor Day, a major astrological event happens. Chiron goes retrograde back into Aries. Now for those of you who aren't into astrology, let me introduce you to Chiron.

Kari Bandle:

Chiron is what astrologers call the wounded healer. He's an asteroid that orbits between Saturn and Uranus, which is itself significant because Saturn rules our physical material reality and Uranus rules spiritual liberation and awakening. Chiron literally sits at the bridge between the two. He is the crossing point between our human wounding and our spiritual expansion. In mythology, Chiron was a centaur, half human, half horse, who was struck by a poisoned arrow that he could not heal himself from.

Kari Bandle:

Despite being a master healer, teacher, and mentor to some of the greatest heroes of ancient mythology, Achilles, Hercules, Asclepias, He carried a wound that never fully closed, and that is the archetype, the wound that becomes the portal, the healer who heals because they know what it is to suffer. Sound familiar to anyone? Chiron enters Aries... Entered Aries back in 2019, and Aries is the sign of self, identity, courage, and the warrior. So since 2019, the collective question has been, where have you abandoned yourself?

Kari Bandle:

Where do you need to fight for your own becoming? Where is your wound around who you are? And this year, in June 2026, Kyren moved into Taurus for the first time since the late 1970s, a big shift, a new chapter. And here's the interesting part. On September 17, Chiron goes retrograde and steps back into Aries for one more pass, one final look until April 2027.

Kari Bandle:

Think about what that means energetically. The wounded healer looked at the work we've been doing around our sense of self, our identity wounds, our courage, and said, Not quite done yet, and came back for a final review. Labor Day weekend is sitting right in the runway of that retrograde return. We are in the energetic approach. This isn't a coincidence.

Kari Bandle:

The cosmos are asking us to honor the inner labor we've been doing since 2019 through a pandemic, through collective upheaval, through every personal crisis and transformation that you have walked through. The wounded healer is coming back to say, Did you see what you built? Did you give yourself credit for it? Because here's the truth about Chiron and Aries. The transit, which has been active for seven years, has been asking every single one of us to stop abandoning ourselves, to stop making ourselves small to keep other people comfortable, to stop treating our own healing like it's a hobby we'll get to someday.

Kari Bandle:

And as the retrograde approaches September, the invitation is to integrate, to take stock, to harvest. There's that word again. What you've learned about who you are and what you're worth. That is the real Labor Day. Now I want to zoom out for a second because Chiron in Aries is not happening in a vacuum.

Kari Bandle:

It's part of a much larger cosmic story that 2026 is writing. In numerology, 2026 reduces to the number one. Two plus zero plus two plus six equals 10 equals one, and in numerology, one is the number of beginnings, the seed, the first breath of a new cycle. Year one is not a continuation. It is a planting.

Kari Bandle:

And if you've heard any of my... I've done two podcasts now on age of Aquarius. I think this fits in with that beautifully because we're in it. And astronomically, 2026 is being called by many astrologers a collective turning point, a quantum leap in human consciousness. We've got Saturn, the planet of structure, responsibility, and reality now in Aries.

Kari Bandle:

We've got Neptune, the planet of illusion, spirituality, and healing, also moving into Aries, where it will stay until 2039. The last time Neptune was in Aries was between 1861 and 1875, a period of massive upheaval, transformation, and rebuilding. That sounds familiar. What Saturn and Neptune together are asking us to do is to give form to the invisible, to build structures that have soul, to stop separating the material and the spiritual as if they were two different worlds. And that is what Labor Day can mean at its highest expression.

Kari Bandle:

Labor, real labor, soul labor is not separate from spiritual life. The work you do on yourself, the healing you commit to, the community you show up for, the integrity you practice when nobody is watching, That is spiritual work. That is labor. The cosmos in twenty twenty six are not interested in the performance of productivity. They're asking for the real thing.

Kari Bandle:

So let me talk about Labor Day for a second, the actual history, because I find it really interesting and I think it reframes the whole holiday. Labor Day was first celebrated in New York City in September 1882. It came out of the labor movement, a movement that was fighting for fair wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable hours, real human dignity stuff. And one of the reasons it was set in September rather than May where most of the world celebrated Workers' Day was specifically to create political distance from the more radical May Day movements in Europe. In other words, Labor Day was from its very beginning a somewhat watered down acknowledgment of the value of human effort, a compromise, a way to honor workers without fully honoring the radical nature of what they were asking for.

Kari Bandle:

And I think we can do better than that spiritually because what the Labor Day movement was really fighting for was this, the recognition that human beings have inherent worth, that your labor, your time, your body, your energy, your skills has value, that you deserve to be treated with dignity, that rest is not laziness, that life spent working yourself into the ground for someone else's gain is not a spiritual virtue. It's a wound. Does any of that sound familiar? Because it sounds to me like Chiron and Aries. It sounds like the seven year healing journey we've all been on around self worth, self abandonment, and fighting for our own becoming.

Kari Bandle:

The original Labor Day movement was saying we deserve better. Chiron and Aries has been saying you deserve to exist as yourself. The harvest moon is saying, look at what actually grew this season, including inside you. And the fall equinox, which is coming, is saying balance, rest and activity in equal measure, light and dark in equal measure, the in breath and the out breath. You cannot keep giving without receiving.

Kari Bandle:

You cannot keep pouring without refilling. That is the real Labor Day invitation. Okay. I know some of you are sitting there going, Carrie, this is all beautiful, but what do I actually do with it? And that's fair.

Kari Bandle:

So let me bring it home. First, you can honor your inner labor this weekend. Take a few quiet moments over Labor Day weekend before the cookout or after the cookout. I don't care. And genuinely ask yourself, what have I been building internally since 2019?

Kari Bandle:

What wounds did I face? What parts of myself did I fight for? What did I heal, even a little? Write it down or say it out loud or tell someone. Just give it witness.

Kari Bandle:

Two, ask the Chiron question. Here's the question from Chiron and Aries has been asking to all of us. Where have you abandoned yourself? And then ask the follow-up question. What would it look like to stop?

Kari Bandle:

You don't have to solve it this weekend. Just sit with that question. That's enough. Three, create a personal harvest ritual. As the harvest moon builds towards September 26, think about what you want to consciously bring to completion.

Kari Bandle:

Not a to do list, I mean, energetically. What are you done with? What chapter is actually done? What wound has taught you? What it came here to teach?

Kari Bandle:

What version of yourself is ready to be released so a new one can step in? You can do this so simply. Just a journal entry, a walk outside, burning a piece of paper. Throw it in your campfire. The ritual doesn't have to be elaborate.

Kari Bandle:

The intention is everything. Four, renegotiate your relationship with rest. One of the things the labor movement fought for that we still haven't fully internalized is that rest is a right, not a reward. This Labor Day, what would it feel like to rest without guilt? Not because you earned it or because you finished your list, but because you are a human being and you have inherent worth and rest is part of that.

Kari Bandle:

I know radical, right? Try it. And five, notice the threshold. We talked about how Labor Day sits in this liminal space. Culturally, it's the end of summer.

Kari Bandle:

Astronomically, it isn't. Astrologically, we're in the approach to a major energy shift. Thresholds are powerful places. They're the moments between what was and what's coming. Don't rush through it.

Kari Bandle:

Stand in it for a second. Feel it. Ask it what it wants you to know. So that is your Labor Day episode. No hot dogs.

Kari Bandle:

They're optional. Soul work is required. Summer isn't actually over, not astronomically, not energetically. The harvest moon is building. The fall equinox is approaching.

Kari Bandle:

Chiron is circling back for one final pass through the healing we've been doing around ourselves or ourself. And 2026 as a whole is a year one, the planting of something new. I find that so refreshing in this new age of Aquarius we are in now. The real labor this weekend is not cooking, not cleaning, not preparing for back to school. The real, the real labor is stopping long enough to look at what you've actually built in your soul and giving it the honor it deserves.

Kari Bandle:

You have been working. You've been healing. You've been becoming. Even on the days when it didn't feel like it, even on the days when you fell apart and had to put yourself back together. That is labor.

Kari Bandle:

That is sacred labor. Honor it this weekend. I'm Carrie Bandle, and this is Medium with a Mic.
