This is Ridgecraft from Summit Borne, the show about how to read mountains, how to judge a route, weigh the risk, and make the calls that separate a good day from an epic on the way up and on the way down. Each episode takes a single question worth getting right. Today's question sounds almost too simple. How hard is a route? Really.
Speaker 1:Not how scary, how hard? It's a question that has quietly humbled some very strong hikers. And by the end of this episode, you'll never read a trail description the same way again. Let's begin where so many of us have been caught off guard. Picture a clear July morning in Colorado.
Speaker 1:You climb Mount Bierstadt. The trail is good, the summit comes in a few hours, and you drive home tired but satisfied, already thinking about the next one. Bierstadt is a Class II walk up, so naturally you pick another Class II. Mount Belford maybe, or La Plata Peak. Same rating you tell yourself.
Speaker 1:You know what you're in for. You do not. Belford starts climbing the moment you step out of the car and it barely lets up. It gains more than four and a half thousand feet on a grade that feels personal. La Plata throws nearly the same vertical at you over rougher ground.
Speaker 1:By the time you reach the summit, your legs are gone, You're far behind schedule, and you're watching clouds stack up over the divide, wondering how a peak with the exact same rating as Bierstadt could feel like an entirely different sport. Here's the thing, nothing went wrong. You didn't make a mistake on the mountain. You made it before you ever left the house when you trusted a number that was never designed to answer the question you were really asking. So that's the question for today.
Speaker 1:When two routes carry the same rating but feel nothing alike, what is the rating missing? And how do you measure the part it leaves out? The part that quietly decides whether your day ends on the summit or somewhere short of it, out of gas. Let's start with what a class rating actually tells you because it does one job and it does it well. The Yosemite decimal system describes the technical difficulty of the hardest single movement on a route.
Speaker 1:Class II means you might use your hands for balance. Class III means real scrambling. Class IV exposed climbing where a fall has consequences. At Summit Borne, we go further with the Difficulty Index, the SDI, which breaks that technical picture into its real components: exposure, sustainment, and route finding. All of that is essential.
Speaker 1:But notice what every one of those measures has in common. They describe the moves. They describe the climbing. Not one of them tells you how hard the route will be on your body. And that's the missing half of difficulty.
Speaker 1:Because a root can punish you in two completely independent ways. It can be technically frightening, exposed, committing, demanding precise movement over a long drop. Or it can be physically brutal, long, steep, high, relentless without a single scary move on it. These are different axes. They don't track together.
Speaker 1:Think about the Mount Whitney Trail, 22 miles, around 6,000 feet of climbing and almost all of it on a walkable path. Technically, it's trivial. Physically, it can flatten a strong hiker. Now flip it. A short, exposed scramble that's over in three hours can rattle your nerves to pieces while barely touching your fitness.
Speaker 1:One number has never been able to hold both of those truths at once. And that's why, alongside the SDI, Summit Borne built a second rating to measure the thing the first one ignores. It's called the Physical Difficulty Rating, the PDR, and it answers one question plainly. Not how scary are the moves? Not how exposed is the ridge?
Speaker 1:Just this, how hard will this day be on your legs, your lungs, and your stamina? It scores the physical demand of a specific route on a scale from one to 10. The SDI tells you how difficult the climbing is. The PDR tells you how difficult the day is. You need both because difficulty has two dimensions and for years hikers have been handed only one of them.
Speaker 1:So how do you actually measure the size of a day? You can't do it with any single statistic and that's the trap. Mileage alone lies to you. Elevation gain alone lies to you. Each tells a piece of the story and read on its own, each one sets you up for a bad assumption.
Speaker 1:The PDR works by combining six measurable factors, each capturing a different way a route drains you. The first and most important, is elevation gain. Climbing is what hurts. The total vertical you have to gain is the single best predictor of how a root will feel. Remember our two peaks.
Speaker 1:Bierstadt asks for roughly 2,800 feet. Belford asks for 4,500. That gap alone explains most of why the second mountain breaks hikers who expected the first. The second factor is distance, and it's the most honest one. Miles are their own kind of work.
Speaker 1:A long gentle trail can empty you as completely as a steep one. It just does it slowly until you look up and realize you're hollowed out. The Whitney Trail and the Grand Canyon's rim to rim crossing earn most of their difficulty right here from sheer length over easy ground. Third is gain density, How steeply that elevation is stacked. Feet of climbing per mile.
Speaker 1:3,000 feet over seven gentle miles is a pleasant day. The same 3,000 feet compressed into three miles is a thigh burning grind. It's why Belford, which climbs almost from the parking lot, scores harder than a longer, gentler peak with the same vertical. Fourth is altitude. The highest elevation you reach.
Speaker 1:Thin air is its own tax. A climb that's merely tiring at 10,000 feet becomes a gasping, head pounding effort above 14, where every step costs more and recovery comes slower. Altitude doesn't make a route technical. It makes it physiologically expensive. Fifth is terrain.
Speaker 1:The surface under your boots. Smooth trail lets you bank energy. Loose scree, shifting talus, and boulder fields steal it back. Two steps up, one slide down. Two routes with identical mileage and gain can finish an hour apart simply because one travels on trail and the other fights for every yard across rubble.
Speaker 1:And sixth is time. The cumulative fatigue of a long day. Hours on your feet add up in a way no single number shows. A fourteen hour outing tests not just your fitness, but your ability to keep eating, drinking, pacing, and thinking clearly long after the early enthusiasm has burned off. Duration is where strong hikers are quietly undone.
Speaker 1:Each factor is scored from a standardized table. The points are added up and the total is converted to a clean 10 scale. Under four and it's manageable for most active a reasonable half day or a short full day. Four to seven is moderate to demanding. You'll need solid fitness and real endurance.
Speaker 1:Seven to nine is long, steep and sustained, where conditioning becomes a major factor in whether you finish. And nine to 10 is the elite end, exceptional endurance, big vertical or long hours above tree line. A quick note before we continue. Speaker 1:Learn more at summitborn.comsummitpass. Now back to the episode. Now watch what happens when you read the PDR next to the SDI because that's where it earns its keep. Take four well known objectives. Bierstadt and Belford carry an identical SDI.
Speaker 1:Same class, same exposure, same sustainment, same route finding. But Bierstadt scores a four point zero on the PDR and Belford a 5.6. Same climbing, meaningfully bigger day. That gap between two peaks a class rating swears are the same is the entire reason the PDR exists. Step up to Long's Peak by the keyhole route.
Speaker 1:Now the SDI climbs into genuine scrambling, and the physical demand rises too, to a 7.2, a longer, higher day than either walk up. Then capital peak. The SDI is serious, and the PDR is a 7.6. And if that 7.6 sounds low to anyone who stood on Capital's knife edge with a thousand feet of air on either side, good. That's the system working exactly as designed.
Speaker 1:Capital's real seriousness lives in its SDI, where the exposure and the technical climbing get rated. The PDR speaks only to the size of the physical day. The two numbers don't compete. They cover for each other's blind spots. You can watch the same logic blow apart a famous list.
Speaker 1:Someone runs the PDR against a popular ranking of the 10 hardest hikes in the national parks, and the results are revealing. The Precipice Trail in Acadia scores a modest 2.4. It's barely a mile and a half. What makes it famous isn't effort. It's danger.
Speaker 1:Iron rungs bolted up a vertical cliff. That hazard is real, but it belongs in the exposure rating, not the physical one. Half Dome's reputation comes from its cables, exposure again. The maze in Canyonlands can't even be scored because it isn't a fixed route. Its difficulty is navigation and remoteness across a roadless tangle of canyons.
Speaker 1:Meanwhile, the Grand Canyon's rim to rim to rim 47 miles on good trail tops the foot trail range on sheer size, even though it never climbs high enough to feel the altitude. A hardest hikes list, it turns out, isn't a physical difficulty ranking at all. The PDR sorts the genuinely big days from the merely frightening ones, and that's the whole job. This is worth sitting with because it points at a myth baked into almost every hardest hikes list ever published. The myth is that hard and frightening are the same word, they are not.
Speaker 1:And once you can tell them apart, those famous lists stop making sense in a useful way. Line up four well known hikes and ask one simple question, which is actually the hardest? Start with Angel's Landing in Zion. It's the hike everyone has seen the photographs of. A narrow fin of rock, chains bolted into it, a sheer drop on either side.
Speaker 1:It is terrifying. It is also short. A few miles, a modest climb, over by lunch. On the PDR, it would score low. Then the Precipice Trail in Acadia, which we already met, a 2.4 famous for iron rungs up a cliff, not for effort.
Speaker 1:Then Half Dome in Yosemite with its legendary cables. 16 miles, nearly 5,000 feet of climbing, a genuine six point zero, a real all day push. And finally, the Grand Canyon rim to rim to rim. 47 miles. 11,000 feet of gain.
Speaker 1:A 7.2. So which is hardest? If you mean which will frighten you most, it's Angel's Landing or the precipice, hands down. If you mean which will physically wreck you, it isn't close. The rim to rim to rim will break people who'd stroll up Angel's Landing and never feel it.
Speaker 1:Sit with that. The two hikes that built their entire utations on fear are physically among the easiest on the list. And the single hardest day by a wide margin is a long walk on good trail that almost never shows up in the scary photographs. That's the myth exposed. A list that blends fear and effort into one ranking is measuring two different things and calling them the same.
Speaker 1:The PDR refuses to do that. It tells you which days are physically big. The SDI tells you which days are frightening. And the moment you separate them, mountains stop surprising you because you're finally asking the right question about each one. Let's make those numbers concrete because a rating only helps if you know what it feels like in your legs.
Speaker 1:Walk back through our four Colorado peaks in order. Bierstadt, a four point zero. This is the shape of a good, honest half day. You start early, you climb a couple thousand feet on solid trail, you're on the summit in a few hours, and you drive home with something left in the tank. A four is not you'll feel it, but a reasonably fit hiker can take it on without any special preparation.
Speaker 1:It's the rating you're allowed to be a little casual about. Belford, a 5.6. Now the day grows teeth. The vertical jumps by more than 1,500 feet and almost all of it comes at you in one sustained, unrelenting grade straight off the valley floor. A 5.6 is the rating where fitness stops being optional and starts being the thing that decides your day.
Speaker 1:You don't fail Belfort on a move. You fail it on the eighth straight switchback, legs full of acid, the Summit Ridge still nowhere in sight. The number went up by a point and a half. The experience changed completely. Long's Peak by the keyhole, a 7.2.
Speaker 1:This is a different category of day altogether. You're starting in the dark hours before sunrise because the round trip is long and the afternoon belongs to the weather. You're covering serious mileage, gaining over 5,000 feet, finishing high enough that the air itself is working against you. And now there's real scrambling stacked on top of all that effort. At a seven, conditioning is no longer a detail.
Speaker 1:It's a prerequisite. People turn around on longs, not because climbing defeats them, but because the size of the day does. Capital, a 7.6. The biggest of the four and the one where both numbers, physical and technical, are shouting at once. And remember, the PDR is only speaking to the effort here.
Speaker 1:The exposure, the knife edge, the consequences of a fall, all of that lives in the SDI. But even setting the danger completely aside, capital is a long, high, punishing day in remote country. The kind you have to train for on purpose. Read those four in sequence and you can feel the scale doing its job. A four is a half day.
Speaker 1:A five and a half is an all day grind. A seven is an alpine start and a long fight to the car. The point was never to memorize numbers. It's that the distance between a four and a seven is the distance between a hike you can wing and a day you have to earn. And the class rating, remember, called several of these the very same thing.
Speaker 1:So if the gap is that stark, why do strong experienced hikers keep walking straight into it? Part of the answer is that the human brain is genuinely bad at estimating effort and it fails in a few predictable ways. The first is that we judge a route by its hardest moment, not its total load. Ask someone how hard a hike was and they'll tell you about the one steep pitch, the one airy step. They won't mention the 4,000 feet of ordinary climbing that actually emptied them, because no single piece of it was memorable.
Speaker 1:Difficulty that arrives gradually doesn't register. It just quietly accumulates. The second is optimism bias. The quiet conviction that this time the day will go to plan. We picture the good version, strong legs, clear skies, a steady pace.
Speaker 1:We rarely budget for the heat, the bad night's sleep, the slower partner, the wrong turn. So our time estimates run short and our energy estimates run long and the mountain collects the difference. The third is that we forget the descent. In our heads, the summit is the finish line. In reality, it's halftime.
Speaker 1:Half your effort and a disproportionate share of your accidents still lie ahead on tired legs, on the same steep ground you just climbed, now pointed downhill where every step lands harder. A plan that ends at the summit isn't a plan. It's a fantasy with a nice view. And the fourth is that fear is simply louder than fatigue. Exposure is vivid and immediate.
Speaker 1:A drop grabs your attention and brands itself into your memory. Endurance is dull and invisible right up until it's gone. So we obsess over the scary 50 feet and shrug at the 20 mile day when the 20 mile day is far more likely to be the thing that gets us into trouble. We are wired to fear the cliff and ignore the clock. So let's talk about why any of this matters, past the planning stage.
Speaker 1:Because this isn't bookkeeping. A great many mountain accidents have nothing to do with a failed technical move and everything to do with a body and mind worn past their limit. Fatigue is a quiet, compounding hazard and it's the one most hikers underestimate because at the trailhead it's invisible. Picture how this goes wrong. A strong hiker drives up to the Whitney Portal having read the one number that stuck.
Speaker 1:It's just a trail. No scrambling. Nothing technical. What that number didn't say was 22 miles, 6,000 feet and a finish line above 14,000. By the switchbacks above trail camp, the altitude has its hooks in, the legs are spent and the summit is still hours off.
Speaker 1:They push on anyway because turning around this close feels like failure and the real danger arrives not at any hard move, but on the long stagger down in the dark, dehydrated, every footing a negotiation, nothing technical beat them. Size of the day did, and they never saw it coming because no rating warned them. That's how it actually unfolds. Exhaustion erodes your judgment first. The tired hiker presses on past a sensible turnaround, misreads a building storm, talks themselves into one more push when the honest call is to descend.
Speaker 1:Fatigue slows you down and slow movement on a long route means more hours exposed to afternoon lightning, to cold, to darkness. It blunts the attention that keeps your feet placed and your holds tested. Add dehydration and sloppy pacing and the whole thing accelerates. On a lot of routes, the most dangerous moment isn't the crux at all. It's the third hour of the descent on rubbery legs with your judgment fraying.
Speaker 1:That's the trap. And it's repeated on peaks all over the country. People underestimate long sustained efforts precisely because the difficulty doesn't show up until the miles and the vertical and the hours all arrive at once. Knowing a route's PDR in advance is what lets you train for it, pace it, and turn around before fatigue makes the decision for you. One more piece worth understanding, why the PDR rides with the route, not the mountain.
Speaker 1:A single summit can hold routes with wildly different demands. Telescope Peak in California is climbed by a 14 mile trail and also from the floor of Death Valley by a 30 mile epic that gains more than 11,000 feet from sea level. Same summit, nothing else in common. Hang one number on the mountain and it's meaningless. Hang a PDR on each route and it tells the truth.
Speaker 1:Physical difficulty is a property of the path you choose, not the peak you choose. So let's come back to where we started. Two class two peaks, same rating, different sport. What was the rating missing? It was missing the day.
Speaker 1:The class rating and even the full technical index describes the moves and stays completely silent about the effort. The PDR closes that gap. Read together, the two numbers give you an honest picture of what a route actually asks of you before you ever leave the car. One tells you what kind of skills and nerve the climbing demands. The other tells you what kind of engine you'll need to get through the day.
Speaker 1:And that's the real lesson here. The one worth carrying up every trail. The hardest move on a route is rarely the thing that beats you. Far more often, it's the size of the day you didn't see coming and the decision you make hours later on tired legs when the mountain is still asking for more than you have left. Match the objective to your skills, yes, but match it to your engine too.
