Resist Media (00:00)
What's up everybody, it's your boy Demetrius Frazier and we're back with the Resist Booksellers podcast. I haven't been on in a while so I don't even know where to start. I feel like I owe you an apology. I don't know how that works. Thank you for following us and making sure you stay subscribed to the channel. But we haven't been on. I haven't given you any book lists, haven't had any author chats, haven't had any news. I got a ton of news today but I haven't been around.

I wanna say I miss y'all. And hopefully y'all miss me as well. And hopefully we give you some good content going forward. But today is full and chock full of news. So good stuff, especially for people who have been following us and commenting on the podcast and saying, hey, this is what I would like to see. I'm loving this part. And so we made some decisions and I think it's gonna be a really interesting.

for those who are really tapped into the Resist Booksellers podcast. So for those of who know, my name is Demetrius Frazier. I am the owner, founder of Resist Booksellers. I also started a media company called Resist Media that will be a big part of what I'm announcing here in a few minutes. But today is really about what's the direction of the podcast. So if you've been following us and listening and subscribing and all that good stuff for the Resist Booksellers podcast, you've noticed that we've had

content span everything from book lists. We've had some guests on who are really big in the bookish space. They gave us some really good content around what books to get next and all that good stuff. And then we had some stuff around just being funny and having a good time. We talked about some other pieces that were really important to the reading space. And then we also did some stuff that was pretty cool and I think well received, which was information around if you wanted to open.

or open a bookstore or if you are just starting out with a bookstore and what kind of things that we can do that I can share from my personal experience with opening up Resist Booksellers that can hopefully help you along the way. And so with all that feedback, what we got was we basically had two different audiences, all stacked into the Resist Booksellers podcast audience. So one audience was, hey, I'm here for the bookish content.

I love the interviews, I love the commentary on books and reading and stuff like that. And then with some that were specifically here for just the bookseller information. I've been dying, dying to open up my own bookstore. I've seen the bookstore in my head, it's in HD, and your content is helping me get through the thoughts around how do I approach that business. And so what we decided,

is that it seems cluttered, right? We got one thing over here and one thing over there, and we can go deeper in both if they weren't together. So what I'm here to announce today is that the Resist Booksellers podcast will remain, but we'll split off the bookseller information. So if you came here just for the book stuff, you'll be fine. If you came here for the bookseller stuff, you want to open up a bookstore,

Well, guess what? We got a whole new podcast dedicated just to you and we'll have deeper and deeper content on both of the pillars. So the Resist Booksellers podcast will stay. It will be named the same. Nothing will change about that stream. But I'm proud to announce that we're to have the Pages and Profit podcast. That's a podcast dedicated to those who are looking to open up a bookstore and don't have the information they need to move forward.

or they have a bookstore and just looking, how do I make this profitable? How do I grow it? How do I maintain and grow this business long term? So you'll have two different podcasts that that's not the last of the announcement, but you just think about it. You'll have the resistance booksellers podcast and get all of your news lists and all that good stuff. And if you're a bookseller, you have this additional content called the pages and profit podcast. I'm looking forward to both.

because I think there's so much we can deliver on both ends. We have long said that we want to have more author chats on the Resist Booksellers podcast, which leads me to my next part of the announcement is that both podcasts will transition to having a visual or video component. So that doesn't mean that we won't still have a audio stream of the Resist Booksellers podcast or the Page and Profit, but they will be video first.

And so the Resist Book Sales podcast and the Pages and Profit podcast, that's a lot of P's that pa pa pa. Hopefully my pluses and poofs are not coming out, but they will both have a channel on YouTube. So if you're looking for that content, you'll see it on YouTube for the videos. And you'll also be able to like and subscribe on Apple because Apple has just now announced that they are going to move towards video podcasting soon. Spotify.

which has already been that way. And then, of course, YouTube, which you can get an audio stream of the podcast on YouTube, but you can also get the video coming in March. So you won't have to wait very long. Those two things will happen very soon. So here it is almost end of February. But you now have starting in March, you'll have the launch of those two podcasts. The Resist Book's house podcast will new episodes will drop on Thursdays.

I have the ⁓ we in the resist media family. have the Brown Lick of Sports podcast that will drop new episodes every Friday and the pages and profit podcast will launch every Monday. Why Monday? Right. Monday seems like a weird day. Well, guess what? Pages of Profit is a business focused entrepreneur focused podcast. We want that to drop at the beginning of your week. So you'll have a podcast on Monday. If you're into the book selling portion, you'll have a podcast on Thursday. If you're looking for

bookish space ideas, things like that inspiration. And if you just look for a laugh, look for the latest in sports and pop culture, that's on Friday. So Resist Media family is growing and we'll have these three podcasts that will hopefully give you some good content throughout the week. But I wanted to make sure that was clear. Resist Booksellers podcast are not going anywhere for sure. We've got tons of content we want to do. We've lined up some author interviews.

We've lined up some chats with local people who have decided to read a specific book with us and come on and talk with that talk with us about that book. And we're looking forward to that type of content. So it'll be more real, more organic. But it also definitely will be video forward. With that said, both podcasts will also have patreons. So if you're looking for the additional add on content for each of those podcasts, you'll have that. So let's let's.

Let's dig into that a little bit on the pages of profit podcast. The additional kind will be like, for example, I have a morning moments where it's just like my small thoughts, things that don't. They're not big enough to be an episode. It's just something I was wrestling with and thinking about. It could be an inspirational thought. It could be my frustrations around certain things. Take, for example, you know, we've seen some some changes at Ingram.

IngramSpark. We did all we could at the Resist Booksellers bookstore to try to come up with a great independent author policy. And one of my biggest frustrations is that we took all this time to create this policy and now Ingram, because of Baker and Taylor's demise, Ingram has now got more business and changing their policies, making it less and less affordable for indie authors. My frustration about that is

a morning moment. My analysis of what we can do differently of that is an episode. Hopefully that makes sense, right? I mean, I can tell you, for example, I'm going to have a bunch of little things that will hit those morning moments, but those will be things that I'll give to the Patreon as well as other bonus content. But those are things that you have to support us on the Patreon. For the Resist Book Sales podcast,

I do have one series that I love and we'll have to move some of those because of the video component. But for sure, our little conversation with my little tots, my little people, if we have those, those will definitely be on the Patreon since it's going to a visual element. We don't want to put that out without there being some kind of security or a smaller audience. So we don't expect the Patreon to be millions of followers. We would love that.

would love that if you want to come and like and subscribe and support the podcast. All of this does take money and work, but for sure we'll have some of those things, bonus content inside of there. So I've had some small documents that have been attached to the podcast for resist booksellers on the bookseller end. We'll definitely go deeper and have ⁓ even more data, information, things like that inside of the Patreon to support the Pageant Profit podcast.

So I'm looking forward to this transition because one, I think it's been long in the making. We for sure have had an opportunity to do this maybe a year or a year and a half ago and just didn't do it. And now we're moving towards that. It's not an equipment thing. It's not a, you know what kind of content you would talk about thing? This is purely, hey, we just need to go ahead and get it done. So I'm looking forward to it. All that said, I think we just want to have some fun.

And as a small topic, I'm going add on to this. I think the announcement, hopefully that makes sense. We'll have some more notes in the podcast notes if you want to catch that. But there's one other thing that I'm I talked about this on a different episode, but for sure, I think I saw an edit of it today. Today, I was talking to someone in the chat of my Instagram Live that I had on my page because I'm out here. I'm actually recording this episode and

Pittsburgh, PA, the other Berg Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ⁓ and for the Winter Institute for American Booksell Association. So I did a little live to saying I'm here. I'm setting up this equipment for this this actual podcast that I'm recording right now. And one of the comments was, hey, I've been trying to dig into fiction. I'm trying really hard. I'm usually a nonfiction reader, but I want to really get into this fiction stuff. And it wasn't what they're stressing.

But I do want to approach that element again. Because I think we've talked about make sure you read what you love, love what you read. You don't have to follow a trend. And right around now, in this part of the year, February especially, for Black History Month, a lot of readers tend to try to dig into more nonfiction, the history, the social sciences, the political discussion and discourse, the essays. And that's great. And I love that they're doing that.

But what I don't want it to leak into is that all of a sudden now I'm a new reader, a different reader. So I read fiction all year long. And now because it's Black History Month, it could be Indigenous People's Month. could be whatever month it is. Now all of sudden I'm going to try to change my complete habits to now become a different reader. That's a hill that you don't have to climb.

because the fiction writers are doing something really cool too that helps you. One, you can still read nonfiction. I'm not telling you not to read nonfiction. I'm just saying don't stress over it. Don't make it when you got to change your identity to match up to some monthly celebration or a wave. That's number one. Number two, you could stay in fiction and still get a good bit of history in there. So think about Yellow Wife. Think about

⁓ Victoria Christopher Murray's books. Think about the historical fiction titles that add a small bit, a character, a person. It could be a time frame and they pull that into the book. You get the history element, you get the fiction that you love, and then you get to cross over a little bit without it being a full detachment away from your fiction foundation.

And what I love about that is it could lead to you finding a small topic that you want to dig deeper on. Or you can find that small topic and say, I'm not interested in that. And guess what? I don't have to go any further. If you grab a nonfiction title, and it's based on Harlem Renaissance, example, when you get into that, now you've got a whole book around

the Harlem Renaissance and you might not actually like that. You might just like, man, this is not it. I might have bitten off more than I wanted, right? And so you say, I don't want to read anymore. Well, now you've DNF the book when really all you wanted was to learn about one particular person or one element. What was the music like? What was the art like? What was the fashion like in the Harlem Renaissance?

But now you got this whole book around the Harlem Renaissance and you just don't want it. So I think historical fiction is a really good, think about the Olympic rings, like those five circles. Historical fiction is like that little overlap between the two rings. You don't have to fully deviate from your ring. You just get a little bit of sliver inside of your own space. So think of it that way. This is just my PSA. I'm gonna preach this until it's blue in the face.

because I had a fantastic reading year last year and I probably read the least I've read as far as pages and books, the least I've read since owning Resist Booksellers. And last year was all vibes, man. I read what I love. And this is full confession. I started a book club that has been humming with great titles, Raymond Williams.

The admins have done a fantastic job keeping that thing running. And I've said, if it's not the book for me that month, I'm not gonna read it. Now, that's on me that I have to live with that where I'm not even going to the meetings because I haven't read the books. I probably should go to the meetings. I take full responsibility for that. But I'm also, if the book they pick,

Isn't my vibe? just, I'm not gonna force myself to read it. I know that sounds weird, but that's just the way I've kind of managed the stress that I have with my day job that I transitioned away from to become a full-time entrepreneur. And in that time, as a father, as a husband, as a son, a brother, all of that stuff wrapped in with the entrepreneurship.

and everything else that's going on, because a lot happened last year. I don't know if you know. All that wrapped in, this is how I kept my fun part of my life, which is the reading part, or one of the fun parts. I kept it so sacred where all I read was books that I vibed.

Cool, my TBR is ridiculously long. There's some great books that came out that I haven't read, but this is how I navigate it. So, all right, look, I'm gonna leave it there, because I got other episodes I wanna do. We're gonna start the video. I wanna make sure to get this information out to everyone, but for sure know that the podcast for Resist Booksellers, the podcast for Pages and Profit, the podcast for Brown Liquor Sports, if you're into it.

all under the resist media banner are going to be so crazy this year. I'm looking forward to having those podcasts just be phenomenal ⁓ for readers, for listeners in this in this coming year. So look forward to get hearing your feedback on what you think. For now, make sure you follow us at resist booksellers on YouTube. That way you'll the audio is already there.

The video will be there soon. Make sure you follow us so that way like and subscribe and all that good stuff so that way you'll see it. But as they launch, we'll make sure to get this out as well on the audio so that if you just, hey, I listen to you in the car when I'm driving to work or coming home, this is the way you can get it. Audio is going to be available. We're not taking that away. We're just going to have the visual and video format. So looking forward to it. Looking forward to great changes coming forward.

And I look forward to hearing your feedback and giving you everything we can to help you along your reading journey.
