[00:00:17 - 00:00:35] So Drew, about a year ago, if you had told me that a movie containing Spider-Man, Hulk, Punisher,
[00:00:36 - 00:00:44] and a bunch of Mr. Characters too. No idea who they are. And then also that's supposed to type
[00:00:44 - 00:00:50] the loose ends of No Way Home. Yep. All in one movie. You'd be concerned. I would be like,
[00:00:50 - 00:00:55] you know, this is kind of a concern, a red flag here. And as a Spider-Man fanatic,
[00:00:55 - 00:00:59] I wouldn't even hate that concern from you. I even went on the podcast and said,
[00:00:59 - 00:01:01] I'm concerned about this movie for all of these reasons. Yep.

[00:01:47 - 00:01:50] I went in my closet and picked out my clothes to wear on this bucket.

[00:01:50 - 00:01:53] And I picked out jeans and a gray shirt.

[00:02:00 - 00:02:02] Jean Grey. She's in the MCU.

[00:02:03 - 00:02:06] This was the worst kept secret behind Andrew Garfield being Spider-Man.

Grant:
[00:02:07 - 00:02:08] That's the point.
[00:02:08 - 00:02:09] Yeah. I mean, it's fine.
[00:02:09 - 00:02:10] It's a marketing thing.
[00:02:10 - 00:02:10] Yeah.
[00:02:10 - 00:02:15] 100%. What do you think of Jean Grey in this movie as the villain?
[00:02:15 - 00:02:17] Yeah. Definitely antagonist.
[00:02:17 - 00:02:20] She is not the antagonist. We'll get to that.

Drew:
[00:02:20 - 00:02:23] Right. I thought it was, I thought it was very well done.
[00:02:23 - 00:02:28] I think Sadie Sink is one of the better young actresses working.
[00:02:28 - 00:02:29] Would completely agree.
[00:02:29 - 00:02:34] So I think she has the range to definitely carry the X-Men on her shoulders.
[00:02:34 - 00:02:34] Yeah.
[00:02:34 - 00:02:36] And I thought her performance here was great.
[00:02:36 - 00:02:42] And I thought this was another thing that could potentially feel shoehorn and it didn't.

Grant:
[00:02:42 - 00:02:47] Yeah. I think one of the criticisms and some of the more scathing reviews that I've read on the
[00:02:47 - 00:02:52] internet is like, this movie is a little too obsessed with setting up the future of the MCU.
[00:02:53 - 00:02:54] Which is, yeah.
[00:02:54 - 00:02:56] That is something this movie does.
[00:02:56 - 00:03:01] But I don't think that it like worsens the movie that these characters like Jean Grey,
[00:03:01 - 00:03:04] like Punisher, like Hulk are all in this movie.

Drew:
[00:03:04 - 00:03:08] I also don't think it sacrifices Spider-Man as the main character.

Grant:
[00:03:08 - 00:03:11] Yeah. Like this occurs in New York and Spider-Man is the hero saving,
[00:03:12 - 00:03:15] you know, the people of New York from Jean Grey.
[00:03:15 - 00:03:16] And like that's the story.
[00:03:16 - 00:03:19] And so I think it works within the context of the movie.
[00:03:19 - 00:03:22] And yes, does it help set up the future of the MCU?
[00:03:22 - 00:03:26] For sure. But like, I don't think they wrote this script and they're like,
[00:03:26 - 00:03:28] all right, let's set up the X-Men.
[00:03:28 - 00:03:28] Right.
[00:03:28 - 00:03:30] I mean, well, maybe they did do that.
[00:03:30 - 00:03:32] But at least it was a good story that does that.
[00:03:33 - 00:03:33] So.

Drew:
[00:03:33 - 00:03:37] I think Jean Grey compliments this story very well.
[00:03:38 - 00:03:42] And I think having Peter be so stubborn in the beginning and him being
[00:03:44 - 00:03:48] so against revealing his identity, A, but also being with people.
[00:03:48 - 00:03:49] And if that's the theme you're trying to tackle,
[00:03:50 - 00:03:53] having an antagonist who kind of is the inverse and a mirror to that
[00:03:53 - 00:03:57] in the sense of like, Jean Grey can literally get in your mind
[00:03:57 - 00:03:59] and figures out who Peter is pretty instantly.
[00:03:59 - 00:04:01] I think that was a great choice.

Grant:
[00:04:01 - 00:04:04] Yeah, I think they did her powers really, really great.
[00:04:04 - 00:04:05] I thought visually it was sick.
[00:04:05 - 00:04:07] Yeah, I like the, it's kind of the Oppenheimer thing.
[00:04:07 - 00:04:08] Yeah, I literally was thinking that.
[00:04:08 - 00:04:10] Okay, let's go. I'm glad that you caught that too.
[00:04:10 - 00:04:11] Yes.
[00:04:11 - 00:04:13] But like the little shifting of the background,
[00:04:13 - 00:04:14] but that was cool. Like it's a nice.
[00:04:14 - 00:04:15] Great.
[00:04:15 - 00:04:18] It probably wasn't done practically, but it looks really good.
[00:04:19 - 00:04:20] And so like that was cool.
[00:04:20 - 00:04:23] The way they conveyed all like the jumping between people.
[00:04:23 - 00:04:25] Super easy to follow along.
[00:04:25 - 00:04:25] Right.
[00:04:25 - 00:04:26] My wife was there.
[00:04:26 - 00:04:28] She had no idea who Jean Grey was.
[00:04:28 - 00:04:30] She was confused when people were cheering,
[00:04:30 - 00:04:31] when her name came on screen.
[00:04:31 - 00:04:31] That's hilarious.
[00:04:31 - 00:04:32] It was kind of funny.
[00:04:32 - 00:04:34] I was like, she's a famous X-man.

Drew:
[00:04:34 - 00:04:37] My mom is seeing it Saturday with me.
[00:04:37 - 00:04:40] And she's not going to know who Jean Grey is.
[00:04:40 - 00:04:41] She's not going to know who Punisher is.
[00:04:42 - 00:04:44] She's barely going to know who Bruce Banner is.

Grant:
[00:04:44 - 00:04:45] Okay.
[00:04:45 - 00:04:46] Well, it'll be interesting.
[00:04:46 - 00:04:48] I have a compliment for this movie though,
[00:04:48 - 00:04:50] because Polly also didn't know who the Punisher was.
[00:04:51 - 00:04:52] Again, didn't know who Jean Grey was.
[00:04:52 - 00:04:54] And this movie does a good job of introducing you to,
[00:04:55 - 00:04:56] at least Jean Grey really well.
[00:04:56 - 00:04:59] You get basically her backstory here.
[00:04:59 - 00:04:59] Yeah.
[00:04:59 - 00:05:02] And then also, you know enough about the Punisher
[00:05:02 - 00:05:04] just from what the movie tells you that you're like,
[00:05:04 - 00:05:05] oh, this is funny.

Drew:
[00:05:05 - 00:05:09] So I would even say it's a good introduction to Frank Castle
[00:05:09 - 00:05:13] because you understand his kill rule pretty instantaneously.

Grant:
[00:05:13 - 00:05:14] Yeah.

Drew:
[00:05:14 - 00:05:16] You're like, all right, he's just this mercenary
[00:05:16 - 00:05:17] trying to kill the bad guys.

Grant:
[00:05:17 - 00:05:18] Yep.
[00:05:18 - 00:05:20] And then you also get that little glimpse of his family
[00:05:20 - 00:05:22] and like, oh, there's a layer under there.
[00:05:22 - 00:05:23] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:05:23 - 00:05:26] So I think that the movie does a good job of not going
[00:05:26 - 00:05:28] too far in on Frank Castle.
[00:05:28 - 00:05:30] But like, you get enough there that if you're new to the Punisher
[00:05:30 - 00:05:32] as a character, you can understand it.
[00:05:32 - 00:05:32] I agree.
[00:05:33 - 00:05:36] I don't know, more stuff about Jean Grey, I guess like,
[00:05:36 - 00:05:39] the big actual villain in my mind,
[00:05:39 - 00:05:41] whose name I cannot remember from the movie.
[00:05:41 - 00:05:41] Starts with an M.
[00:05:42 - 00:05:44] I'm going to call him Mr. Milchick.
[00:05:44 - 00:05:44] Yeah.
[00:05:44 - 00:05:45] It's Tramel Tillman.

Drew:
[00:05:45 - 00:05:48] He's low key playing the same character as Severance.

Grant:
[00:05:48 - 00:05:48] Yes, he is.
[00:05:48 - 00:05:49] Which is fine.
[00:05:49 - 00:05:50] He's great.
[00:05:50 - 00:05:53] He's kind of the actual villain of this movie.
[00:05:53 - 00:05:54] I need to look up what his name is.
[00:05:54 - 00:05:56] But I think it does start with an M.
[00:05:56 - 00:05:57] It might, honestly.
[00:05:57 - 00:06:01] But I think that the movie kind of ends up framing it like,
[00:06:01 - 00:06:04] okay, Jean Grey isn't actually a villain.
[00:06:04 - 00:06:05] She's just trying to save her sister.
[00:06:06 - 00:06:08] But she's doing things that are bad to do that.
[00:06:08 - 00:06:09] So.
[00:06:09 - 00:06:10] Right.
[00:06:10 - 00:06:10] I don't know.
[00:06:10 - 00:06:11] What did you think about that?

Drew:
[00:06:11 - 00:06:12] I thought it was good.
[00:06:12 - 00:06:17] I will say this plot is not the craziest plot I've ever seen.
[00:06:17 - 00:06:18] Yeah.
[00:06:18 - 00:06:20] There is a level of predictability
[00:06:20 - 00:06:22] that if you see in enough superhero stuff,
[00:06:22 - 00:06:24] you can, it's pretty easy to be like,
[00:06:24 - 00:06:26] I don't think Tramel Tillman here
[00:06:26 - 00:06:27] is the good guy.
[00:06:27 - 00:06:28] Right.
[00:06:28 - 00:06:29] I think he's lying.
[00:06:29 - 00:06:29] Yes.
[00:06:29 - 00:06:34] Like damage control in the MCU has kind of been an antagonistic thing.
[00:06:37 - 00:06:39] So yeah, it's not that hard to figure out.
[00:06:39 - 00:06:40] But I thought it was good.
[00:06:40 - 00:06:41] William Metzger, by the way.
[00:06:41 - 00:06:41] William Metzger.
[00:06:41 - 00:06:42] So there wasn't him.
[00:06:42 - 00:06:43] There wasn't him.

Grant:
[00:06:43 - 00:06:45] so Mr. Metzger, that's good.
[00:06:45 - 00:06:48] I'm going to get that mixed up at some point.
[00:06:49 - 00:06:51] But I mean, him being the ultimate villain,
[00:06:52 - 00:06:54] while it was relatively predictable,
[00:06:54 - 00:06:56] like I could kind of see where the story was going.
[00:06:57 - 00:07:00] Same with the Peter like evolution thing within his DNA,
[00:07:00 - 00:07:01] which we'll talk about like,
[00:07:01 - 00:07:03] okay, I can see where that storyline was going to,
[00:07:03 - 00:07:05] but they're still well done and well conveyed.
[00:07:05 - 00:07:07] And I think the script is pretty good here.
[00:07:07 - 00:07:08] So.

Drew:
[00:07:08 - 00:07:10] I also don't think predictability is a detractor from this movie.

Grant:
[00:07:10 - 00:07:11] Yeah.

Drew:
[00:07:11 - 00:07:13] That like the fact that I knew where we were going didn't
[00:07:14 - 00:07:16] make me want to get there any less.

Grant:
[00:07:16 - 00:07:19] Yeah, like I like the direction that they went in.
[00:07:19 - 00:07:20] And I guess this is one other,
[00:07:21 - 00:07:24] maybe critique slash conversation I've seen online recently.
[00:07:24 - 00:07:25] More just about this movie generally.
[00:07:27 - 00:07:30] People, I think maybe have been concerned that Jean Grey's
[00:07:30 - 00:07:31] in this movie as the villain.
[00:07:31 - 00:07:34] Why wasn't it Mr. Negative or whatever?

Drew:
[00:07:34 - 00:07:35] We actually had a comment say that.

Grant:
[00:07:35 - 00:07:36] Yes, we did.
[00:07:36 - 00:07:40] Or like, why didn't they go with more multiverse stuff?
[00:07:41 - 00:07:44] Which I don't think a lot of people are really asking for.
[00:07:44 - 00:07:45] Or why didn't they go into the Sonyverse?
[00:07:46 - 00:07:48] I think a lot of those answers can kind of,
[00:07:48 - 00:07:50] or those questions can answer themselves like,
[00:07:51 - 00:07:54] well, Mr. Negative maybe is something that could happen in the future.
[00:07:55 - 00:07:58] But there is an insomniac game with him as the villain.
[00:07:58 - 00:07:59] That is pretty good.
[00:08:01 - 00:08:01] You good?
[00:08:01 - 00:08:03] Oh, yeah, I'm still getting over sickness.
[00:08:03 - 00:08:03] I'm so sorry.
[00:08:04 - 00:08:08] But you can experience that story already out there in the world.
[00:08:08 - 00:08:09] That's a great game.
[00:08:09 - 00:08:11] And then, yeah, the Sonyverse is a mess.
[00:08:12 - 00:08:13] So let's not do that.
[00:08:13 - 00:08:14] Agreed, yeah.
[00:08:14 - 00:08:16] And then I think we're all tired of the multiverse.
[00:08:16 - 00:08:20] And so I think it was a refreshing break from that in this film.

Drew:
[00:08:20 - 00:08:23] I think I think I thought it was good.
[00:08:24 - 00:08:26] And I said this kind of in the No Spoiler video,
[00:08:26 - 00:08:30] but when you have your themes and your third act
[00:08:30 - 00:08:32] conclude with the themes and the plot,
[00:08:32 - 00:08:35] I think it lands kind of the one-two punch-up storytelling,
[00:08:35 - 00:08:38] which is kind of where you want to land in general.
[00:08:38 - 00:08:43] So when you have this villain who is a foil to Peter Parker,
[00:08:43 - 00:08:45] I'm not saying it's the craziest foil ever.

Grant:
[00:08:45 - 00:08:45] No.

Drew:
[00:08:45 - 00:08:47] Like, again, it's predictable.
[00:08:47 - 00:08:52] But it lands emotionally and the plot, it wraps up very,
[00:08:52 - 00:08:53] it ties the bow.

Grant:
[00:08:53 - 00:08:55] Well, it's an interesting way to introduce Jean Grey
[00:08:55 - 00:08:58] and kind of the MCU's version of the X-Men into the universe.
[00:08:58 - 00:08:59] I agree.
[00:08:59 - 00:09:01] I know we have Fantastic Four, which is an X-Men,
[00:09:01 - 00:09:04] but we're starting to introduce these Fox characters.
[00:09:04 - 00:09:07] And now they're, I mean, this is a great introduction,
[00:09:07 - 00:09:08] in my opinion.
[00:09:08 - 00:09:09] And say he sings great.
[00:09:09 - 00:09:10] So I agree.
[00:09:10 - 00:09:14] Jean Grey's kind of, I don't know, conniving at some point.
[00:09:14 - 00:09:14] I know.
[00:09:14 - 00:09:19] Like, she intentionally does emotional harm to Peter.
[00:09:20 - 00:09:21] Should we get into?
[00:09:21 - 00:09:22] Talk about the scene.
[00:09:22 - 00:09:23] Okay.

Drew:
[00:09:23 - 00:09:24] This was probably my favorite scene in the whole movie.
[00:09:24 - 00:09:26] Well, it's one or the other.
[00:09:26 - 00:09:26] Okay.
[00:09:28 - 00:09:30] The scene with MJ on the roof.
[00:09:30 - 00:09:30] So good.
[00:09:30 - 00:09:32] Thought it was so good.
[00:09:32 - 00:09:33] So good.
[00:09:33 - 00:09:36] Because, I mean, this is just fantastic writing.
[00:09:36 - 00:09:38] But you think on your first watch, you're like,
[00:09:38 - 00:09:41] oh my gosh, this is the biggest, cheapest thing
[00:09:41 - 00:09:42] I've ever seen.
[00:09:42 - 00:09:43] When they're kissing and you're like,
[00:09:44 - 00:09:44] it's just really out.
[00:09:44 - 00:09:45] They're going to do it.
[00:09:46 - 00:09:47] I can't talk right now.

Grant:
[00:09:47 - 00:09:48] You're good.
[00:09:48 - 00:09:50] You're also like, yeah, this doesn't feel right.
[00:09:50 - 00:09:51] But then there's part of you that's like,
[00:09:51 - 00:09:53] I want this to be how this plays out.
[00:09:53 - 00:09:53] Right.
[00:09:53 - 00:09:55] Like, it feels good, but also not.
[00:09:55 - 00:09:56] As somebody who knows, like, this is bad writing
[00:09:56 - 00:09:57] if this is the way it is.
[00:09:57 - 00:09:59] But then there's the emotional part of me that's like,
[00:09:59 - 00:10:01] I really hope that this is the way it plays out.
[00:10:02 - 00:10:03] And then you get the rug pulled out from under you.
[00:10:03 - 00:10:05] And then you get the rug pulled out.
[00:10:05 - 00:10:06] And then, honestly, Zendaya's switch up
[00:10:06 - 00:10:08] of her performance there is great.
[00:10:08 - 00:10:10] She got like, it was weird.
[00:10:10 - 00:10:11] Maybe this is just my brain.
[00:10:11 - 00:10:14] But the way she was talking sounded like
[00:10:14 - 00:10:15] how Sadie Sink was talking.
[00:10:15 - 00:10:16] I don't know if that was just me.
[00:10:16 - 00:10:17] Maybe.
[00:10:17 - 00:10:19] But, like, there's a performance there
[00:10:19 - 00:10:20] that actually works really well.

Drew:
[00:10:20 - 00:10:24] and then the other scene that was so good,
[00:10:24 - 00:10:28] I thought, is when Zendaya's holding the note.
[00:10:28 - 00:10:28] Yes.
[00:10:28 - 00:10:29] Oh my gosh.
[00:10:29 - 00:10:30] Yeah.
[00:10:30 - 00:10:32] When I said I wanted a sad, depressed Peter Parker,

Grant:
[00:10:33 - 00:10:34] that's what I'm talking about.
[00:10:34 - 00:10:34] Yeah.
[00:10:34 - 00:10:37] Let's let's dive into Ned and MJ and Peter.
[00:10:37 - 00:10:40] Because I think this movie could have also
[00:10:40 - 00:10:42] just abandoned that, like them entirely.
[00:10:42 - 00:10:43] Yeah.
[00:10:43 - 00:10:45] Not had Ned or MJ in the story at all.
[00:10:45 - 00:10:46] You could make the argument that they
[00:10:46 - 00:10:47] should be in it more.
[00:10:47 - 00:10:50] But regardless, they're in this movie
[00:10:50 - 00:10:51] and they're kind of an important part
[00:10:51 - 00:10:52] of Peter's journey in this movie.
[00:10:52 - 00:10:54] So what do you think?
[00:10:54 - 00:10:55] I mean, talk about the note scene.
[00:10:55 - 00:10:56] Maybe continue to talk about that.

Drew:
[00:10:56 - 00:10:58] I mean, the note scene I thought was so good.
[00:10:58 - 00:11:01] When she's like, I'm sorry, but I don't A,
[00:11:01 - 00:11:03] love you and B, know you.
[00:11:03 - 00:11:06] You're like, oh my gosh, that is the saddest thing

Grant:
[00:11:06 - 00:11:07] I've ever heard in my entire life.
[00:11:07 - 00:11:08] Yeah, it does suck.
[00:11:08 - 00:11:10] But like, you can tell somewhere in there,
[00:11:10 - 00:11:12] there's turmoil over this of like,
[00:11:12 - 00:11:14] she knows that Peter's been missing from her life.
[00:11:14 - 00:11:15] Right?

Drew:
[00:11:15 - 00:11:16] Yeah, I think that's true.

Grant:
[00:11:16 - 00:11:18] Even if it's like after the fact,
[00:11:18 - 00:11:19] after she realizes that it's Peter.
[00:11:19 - 00:11:24] So here's what I loved about the trio, I guess.
[00:11:24 - 00:11:24] Okay.

Drew:
[00:11:24 - 00:11:27] One, we didn't wrap up it.
