Welcome, dear listeners. Today's insight comes from the Mishnah, the earliest written compilation of Jewish oral traditions, and provides a guide to our daily lives.
The Mishnah teaches us: "In a place where there are no men, strive to be a man." (Pirkei Avot 2:6). Isn't that intriguing? It doesn't refer to man in the biological sense, but rather, it speaks to characteristics such as integrity, kindness, and responsibility. The Mishnah is essentially stating that in situations where these virtues seem absent, we should step up and embody them.
In our everyday lives, we might encounter situations that require someone to act - perhaps it's an unattended piece of litter on the ground, or a coworker in need of assistance. We may think, "Someone else will take care of it." But the Mishnah challenges us to be that 'someone'.
So next time we find ourselves in a place devoid of "men" - of responsibility, kindness, or integrity - let's remember the Mishnah's words and strive to embody these virtues. For it's through our actions that we shape not only our own character, but also the world around us.
