What is We Are Liars - A Pretty Little Liars Podcast?

Every Wednesday join Liss and Michelle from Total Betty Podcast Network as they rewatch and discuss (spoiler free) each episode of Pretty Little Liars.

[00:00:00] LISS: Welcome back to another episode of We Are Liars, a Pretty Little Liars podcast. I'm Les. And I'm Michelle. And we are discussing season one, episode five, titled Reality Bites Me Original Air Date July 6th, 2010, written by Brian M. Holden, directed by Wendy Stanler. This summary cracks me up a little bit, trying to ignore a backfired for the liars, and now they must pay the penalty as they deal with teenage.

[00:00:56] LISS: Typical drama, the boy kind, . [00:01:00] It cracked me up. I don't know, I just thought it was funny.

[00:01:05] MICH: That's hysterical. Yeah. The way that's worded .

[00:01:09] LISS: So my little poison tonight is titled Lipstick Memory. It is a recipe by Epicurious. It has cranberry, kamari, and sparkling wine, and the link for the drink will be in the description.

[00:01:22] LISS: Enjoy. That also

[00:01:24] MICH: is very fitting for Thanksgiving. I feel. It is. It

[00:01:28] LISS: would be a good cocktail for Thanksgiving. Yeah, it'd be pretty. The picture has Rosemary Sprague in it, so I feel like it would go. Ooh. All right, so the girls are dealing with the aftermath of the red lipstick on Spencer's mirror. The girls have cute little sleepover because they're all freaked out about the night before.

[00:01:48] LISS: They have also reinstated their phones to receive all messages. Everything is a free for all. Now, they'll get calls and messages and a. Doesn't waste [00:02:00] any time. They text Hannah an attachment of a video from the girls the night before. The angle is coming from the closet. So this creepy, so creepy was in the room with them this whole time while they were staring at the mirror.

[00:02:17] LISS: Oh my, I

[00:02:18] MICH: have, I have to say this, uh, episode in the beginning really creeped me out. I was like, wow, good job. Like I actually feel

[00:02:28] LISS: uncomfortable. Well, I'm glad it was definitely a better episode than last week for sure.

[00:02:34] MICH: Much better. As I was texting you or in the group with the discord that I think this episode's probably my favorite so far.

[00:02:42] LISS: Yes, agreed. And because each week you get a little bit more and a little bit more, and plus we have Jenna back with the lipstick. It was just, oh, it was good. So they run to the closet. Inside is said, lipstick on the floor, they match it to the mirror and they're like, okay, this [00:03:00] is it. That's the morning we have over to the individual girls for the day.

[00:03:05] LISS: So we'll start with Aria. The things at the Montgomery's are not going well post Byron's affair being revealed. Ella and Byron are fighting constantly and there are talks of him moving out. And you know what I'd like to know is who do they think this letter came from? Don't the parents think it's weird?

[00:03:31] MICH: Thank you. I was wondering the same thing. I mean, I guess because obviously this coming to the surface is hurtful, right? Your spouse cheated on you, your daughter was involved, like uses a pawn in this, but no one questions where this information came from, right? , what the hell? Except, you know, except for the girls, but like, What I mean, I guess, I guess they're, in their mind, they're like, it doesn't matter where it came from because it's true, but [00:04:00] wouldn't you wanna know who sent you this

[00:04:01] LISS: letter?

[00:04:03] LISS: Right. And And it's bizarre. And wouldn't you

[00:04:05] MICH: question your daughter and be like, Hey, in the letter it says you've known, who's

[00:04:12] LISS: this person? I'd like to know the same thing. I was questioning it the whole time. . So as you said, aria reveals that she has known for over a year. And when Ella finds this out, she of course is upset, but she isn't really directly mad at Aria.

[00:04:33] LISS: She's just more focused on Byron keeping this a secret and making their daughter keep this a secret. And the fact that she befriended Meredith, so now she feels like a fool as you would. Yeah. And Mike notices that something is off between the parents. Aria doesn't really feed into it that much, and she is realizing Mike is not [00:05:00] stupid.

[00:05:00] LISS: So later on they do have this cute little scene where she makes him the mac and cheese and they lay in bed and he's like, what's going on? She's like, I really wish I, I knew what our parents were gonna like, what was gonna happen there. So it's really sad. It

[00:05:13] MICH: is really sad. And she does tell him like, I know it doesn't have to deal with us.

[00:05:18] MICH: Right? It's between them. But still. And I, and I love the fact that she said to her mom, like, I don't wanna keep this from Mike. Like I had to keep it from you. I don't wanna keep this secret. Right. So that'll be interesting when that comes out.

[00:05:32] LISS: Byron's gonna have to lie in the bed that he made. Good go.

[00:05:38] LISS: Yeah. But at school, aria is visiting her pal Ezra, and she tells him she wants to make plans to hang out. And so he states that he's going to be reading his story at a bar. He tells her she could stop by if she wants to, but like [00:06:00] he doesn't know how it's gonna be. Hopefully it doesn't suck. . Yeah,

[00:06:05] MICH: I just, again, she's free to go wherever she wants and he can't control.

[00:06:11] MICH: But obviously these two can't control how they are around each other. Right. And just her going to a public place and him inviting her like it's so inappropriate. And her seeing like, oh, I wanna come see you and listen to you read, is it's just giving this invitation, like almost like, I want you to be there.

[00:06:32] MICH: It's just messy. It's so messy. That's what, and I, and I hated the line of her saying, you are the teacher, I'm the student. And I was just like, barf, this is so cr, that's what she said right in the classroom, leaving

[00:06:47] LISS: into it. Yeah. Yeah, it was, um, really cringy and uncomfortable. So at the poetry reading we meet Hardy, who's played by Patrick Adams.

[00:06:59] LISS: He is [00:07:00] perfectly Ezra's college roommate. Like perfect to a t. Yeah. And he comes to support Ezra without Ezra's knowledge. I guess he had maybe in passing told him he was going to be doing this and didn't expect Hardy to show up. Arya is introduced to Hardy and he picks up on the relations right away. He lets Ezra know.

[00:07:21] LISS: I don't really think this is a good idea. Dude, you're really messing with fire. It's not a good plan. You're her teacher. She's a student. She's in high school. And so this does sway Ezra's thoughts because later Ezra's demeanor towards Aria has changed. He's acting really strange during their hangout.

[00:07:40] LISS: They're playing pool, they're getting fries. And it's just like, the conversation is conversation of post-college adult men about sex and things. And you know, Hardy hooking up with someone and I'm thinking like, well, you're saying this in front of his [00:08:00] student. This is really weird and awkward to to watch.

[00:08:04] MICH: Yeah. And also you're aware that this is your student, right? Like she introduces herself as his student. Right. And then later on

[00:08:13] LISS: can't say she's anything

[00:08:14] MICH: else. Right. But like you said, quickly, it's picked up because of the vibe and the way they look at each other, and just what was being said was so inappropriate, like, why would you continue to tell those stories?

[00:08:27] MICH: Yes. You know, as a student, why would you invite the student to come hang out with you guys? Like it's just so inappropriate. I mean, he calls Ezra out, but also he was inappropriate, right?

[00:08:38] LISS: Yeah. He was inappropriate with the just context of what he was talking about in front of the high school student. He said, Hey, yeah, this is my student

[00:08:49] LISS: So later on, aria and Ezra head back to Ezra's apartment and Aria definitely notices something's up with him. He blows up on her, [00:09:00] basically says that you're still a student. This can't continue. It's wrong. But then he's very easily persuaded by his feelings for her. And the two decide to keep seeing each other in private because it's what they mutually want to do.

[00:09:13] LISS: They don't really care. Like screw the outside world. We don't really have to face them just yet. So we'll just stay in our little bubble until like shit hits the fan pretty much. And then shit hits the fan because Arya leaves her phone at Ezra's and he sees a text from a, it says, lucky you Arya. Other girls have to do their homework.

[00:09:33] LISS: You get to do the teacher. Ooh, burn. Uh, what did

[00:09:41] MICH: you think of him accusing her? Of not telling the truth about who she's told, right.

[00:09:50] LISS: Um, and mm-hmm. . Well, what do think?

[00:09:53] MICH: Yeah. I'm like, I'm almost curious if she's just gonna go back in and include him in what's been [00:10:00] going on. Like, Hey, actually here are the facts.

[00:10:04] MICH: But like, I'm, I was trying to think like, what would I do? Would I be like, Hey, listen, this is actually what's up? But then that would involve him into like this huge thing that only the girls are aware of and whatnot. Right. Also in him just being like, I thought you were mature enough for this relationship and it's.

[00:10:22] MICH: I don't

[00:10:22] LISS: know. I didn't like any of it's, I feel like that's not the argument he should be having. It would a trust. A trust saying yes, maybe because she didn't let him on that she was telling someone obviously, even though she wasn't. But the thing that she's still a child. It's, it's like immature to do that.

[00:10:38] LISS: Not really the, the argument here. Yeah. Right. Um, but he basically cuts off, he stops the relationship and he thinks he can't trust her and this is gonna get them in a lot of trouble. How dare you? And so she leaves and he just, he tells her to get out, like leave.

[00:10:56] MICH: I mean, secretly, I'm hoping this ends, but I know it doesn't.[00:11:00]

[00:11:00] LISS: Oh, same . I'm like, yay. Well, you

[00:11:04] MICH: know what happens? First time, you know what happens? I don't.

[00:11:09] LISS: So over to Hannah. Her punishment is underway and her way to pay back the ACC is by working at Sean's mom's Dental's dental office. We see a conversation earlier that day between Sha Shannon, between Sean and Hannah, and he admits he tried to take the blame for the car crash.

[00:11:34] MICH: What is this about that? This is so weird to me. This is so weird. I can't read this

[00:11:37] LISS: kid. You don't think he's full of shit . I know

[00:11:40] MICH: I don't want to, but it's just like every dude on this show sucks. Except for Tober fur. So far. So far. And Sean, I'm like, okay. You wanted, you tried to take the blame. The fact that you guys are still talking and then as I'm sure we'll get into it, the discussion of homecoming, I'm [00:12:00] like, I what?

[00:12:01] MICH: She destroyed

[00:12:03] LISS: your car. I know. And would your,

[00:12:06] MICH: and would your parents even want you to date

[00:12:09] LISS: her? Absolutely not. Absolutely not. And so I, the argument is, like he says, I understand where you were coming from that night. Like we had a bad night together. And I felt really shitty about that, which is so mature to, right.

[00:12:26] LISS: Well, and also that's just like the type of person that he is. He feels the blame all the time. And so he takes the blame from Hannah, but obviously his parents caught on. And, um, you know, Hannah's like, well, it's best off that, you know, you didn't, you didn't have to do that for me. And you can definitely see that, like they still have that pull towards each other, chemistry, if you will.

[00:12:47] LISS: I don't really see a lot of chemistry between them as a couple. Um, but they definitely are like friends, like they're friends to the heart and she does bring up, so we're gonna go to homecoming together. [00:13:00] And he, like at first, is taken aback, but he's like, I, I just have to think about that. He's not really ready to, I guess, jump full feet in with Hannah, understandably

[00:13:12] LISS: She, him before with like, trying to get him to have sex and then she crashes his car. Like, it's a lot. It's a

[00:13:19] MICH: hot mess. Yes. No, it, it's a lot. I have a question for you. Okay. So remember on Friday lights and you were making like predictions and observations of Billy, right? Yes. And I shut it down. I was like, he's not that type of guy.

[00:13:33] MICH: Is Shawn a good guy? So I didn't have to cont Okay. Then I'm gonna

[00:13:38] LISS: change my thoughts. Yeah, just, just change it. I I will give you the clarification. Thank you. And he, he is not evil, I'll put it that way. Okay. I mean, he's not like, A huge, um, player, but I mean, I don't mean player as in like the romantic sense.

[00:13:56] LISS: I mean like he's just not a huge character. So they [00:14:00] kind of write him in to be like a nice sound board for Hannah. But like the relationship is not really gonna go anywhere, you know?

[00:14:09] MICH: Okay, perfect. At least cuz now like that will take this energy. Yeah. And to sit on other characters instead of me being like, Sean, I don't really trust you.

[00:14:19] MICH: Yeah.

[00:14:19] LISS: And I don't know why you were going with your gut and yeah, I'm here to assure you that your gut is wrong. And then he's just a good, a good dude that is just pretty vanilla. It's been all intense and purposes. Just vanilla,

[00:14:33] MICH: don't you think? He looks like an older version of Quas son from Win Hill. I

[00:14:42] LISS: forgot that kid's name.

[00:14:43] LISS: Um,

[00:14:45] MICH: I'm always thinking like, Hey, this person would be a really good relative to this person, or this person could play this person older. Like I think Clay's son. This kid looks like a teenage version.

[00:14:58] LISS: Okay. . [00:15:00] We'll have to put it side by side. I'm having trouble remembering what the kid would like. Go. Go. Um, yeah, so we then see Sean getting picked up by a new blonde girl.

[00:15:14] LISS: Hannah is immediately devastated. We find out later that this girl is a member of the Real Love Weights Club. Aka the Clean Teens. Right, the Virginity Club, yeah. At school. And Sean is also a part of this and I love his attitude towards her. He is like, go ahead and laugh, but like kind of owning it, like, yeah, I'm doing this because it's important to me and it's good for me to have, be surrounded by people that have the like-mindedness.

[00:15:42] LISS: Like good, good to be aware of you, of your surrounding identity As of high

[00:15:48] MICH: school. Yeah. And your identity, and what do you feel? I know I did, I really did like that. And I really enjoyed, now that I'm changing my tune towards Sean, like I really enjoyed him. And Hannah's, uh, interactions in [00:16:00] this episode.

[00:16:01] LISS: Okay. Good, good, good. . And then Hannah mentions she's also interested in the real love weights club too, because she can tell it means something to Sean, so it will mean something to her. So she'll, she'll go join a meeting, you know, maybe soon. So during her day at work, she sees Jenna in the elevator, Jenna's applying a fresh coat of lipstick in the elevator doors.

[00:16:28] LISS: Okay. Question. Here we go. Mm-hmm. . Jenna is blind. She is. I'm assuming

[00:16:35] MICH: she can still make out shapes and perhaps I'm super ignorant. I will own up to that. But it looked like she was looking at her, her reflection as she was applying the

[00:16:49] LISS: lipstick. It, this is your first red herring of the show, so you could take that however you wanna take it.[00:17:00]

[00:17:00] LISS: She might see, she might not. It was, I think done on purpose. Okay.

[00:17:06] MICH: Because Hannah doesn't even react to that part. Just reacts to the shade of the lipstick. So then I'm like, okay, I perhaps do not know enough. And I'm like, they can make out shapes. Like someone who is blind can make out shapes and know their face.

[00:17:21] MICH: Right. Like, you know,

[00:17:23] LISS: and it might be, um, What's that phrase I'm looking for? Like Phantom? Um mm-hmm. , like she's doing it because that was the motion that she would do when she saw Right. Pretending to look in a mirror. So it might just be like a phantom way of her putting on her lipstick. Yes. Again, you can interpret it however you want to interpret it.

[00:17:45] LISS: Time will tell. Okay. Okay. You know? Yeah. Um, but she does get a look to see if it's the same shade. She thinks that it is. After that she follows Jenna to see where she is [00:18:00] going in this building, and she realizes that Jenna is seeing a psychiatrist that might be beneficial to Hannah down the line. Yeah. So she goes to see Spencer at the grill to tell her about her findings.

[00:18:17] LISS: But before that, Hannah must be the chosen target today because she also gets an email from a with a photo of Maya and Emily kissing, and a says, now I know two secrets. Hannah got dissed and Emily got kissed. Yeah. Yay. I love this. There's lots of talks of relationships in this episode, and it's important to also note that Ashley knows that Tom and Isabelle are together, but she's crushed to know that they are actually engaged.

[00:18:51] LISS: She didn't realize that part. And during this conversation, this kind of prompted Hannah to be more forward with Sean and to [00:19:00] ask him, are they over, are we over, what? What are we? And it seems like they aren't, but maybe they are. I don't know. How did you take on? Yeah.

[00:19:11] MICH: I think this just means that they'll hang out and go to this meeting together and that they're on good terms.

[00:19:17] LISS: Right? That's how I Friendly thing.

[00:19:20] MICH: Yeah. And maybe they will go to homecoming together and we'll see what happens

[00:19:24] LISS: there. Okay. As I teased, Spencer has won the Golden Orchid. Orchid. Orchid ha's s slow. It was like my brain literally hit a fuse. Um, this, of course she did. And this is just how Ren knew it would go down.

[00:19:45] LISS: She wins something. Her parents forgive all as well in the world and. Her dad is happy, gives her a box of chocolates and says, Hey, I think we should do doubles tomorrow. I have a [00:20:00] prospective client and his daughter that are interested. I think it would be really good. So she's happy to go there. Um, and she practices like all day on her swing.

[00:20:10] LISS: Yeah. So that's, then that's Spencer. Like give her a task, she's gonna do it to her fullest and make sure that she wins and there she meets an attendant named Alex. And the two get to know each other a bit and there's definitely some attraction there. Have you seen this actor before? He's been in like a lot of things.

[00:20:28] LISS: Did you watch Scream Queens? Like

[00:20:31] MICH: the first

[00:20:33] LISS: couple of episodes. Okay. Cuz he was in that show and that's like the only other thing he's, he was big on like this network and. I think c w the

[00:20:45] MICH: security guard looked familiar

[00:20:46] LISS: to me. Yes. He's been in a lot of stuff. That's, that's the security

[00:20:49] MICH: guard. He's played that role.

[00:20:52] LISS: Yeah. I feel like, I'd have to look it up, but for sure. Yeah, he's definitely played a cop somewhere. . Yeah.

[00:20:58] MICH: I, I didn't [00:21:00] wanna search that because I'm afraid to search anything. Okay.

[00:21:03] LISS: I'll look it up. And I, I will report back. So while she's practicing, as I said, she runs into Alex and they get talking and it's then revealed that Peter wants Spencer to.

[00:21:19] LISS: Throw the game because he doesn't want them to win. It would look bad because, uh, Russell and his daughter are not good at tennis, so she does it, but she doesn't feel great about it. And Alex is there. He is, you know, the, the ball guy while their game is going on and he notices that Spencer is not doing her best and he does approach her about it.

[00:21:46] LISS: Pretty much owns up to the fact that her dad wanted her to lose. And he's like, actually, I see that a lot here. Like this is like just something that happens. Like I'm not really surprised by it. And so I think her hearing that and then [00:22:00] later on her dad saying that he basically threw Alex under the bus for something that happened at the club.

[00:22:06] LISS: Spencer pops off. My favorite part is she then tells her dad, ha ha, guess what? I actually stole the essay but I won so it doesn't really matter. And she leaves. I loved it. I was loved

[00:22:19] MICH: that and I love that. This is how this came to the, comes to the surface. I mean, I guess there, there might still be more that will happen,

[00:22:27] LISS: but I honestly don't remember

[00:22:31] LISS: I don't think we come back to it, I don't think. Okay, that's good. I don't remember, but I don't think this is something that a like blows up in Spencer's face, I guess because it's already out in the open. And she

[00:22:41] MICH: owned it and took responsibility for it. So I love that.

[00:22:44] LISS: This was good, right? And she, she is getting to know Alex, and so she was like, don't disrespect someone that I'm, I'd befriended, I'm starting to like, and the two of them do meet up later, like they have plans to hang out.

[00:22:58] LISS: So this is [00:23:00] cute.

[00:23:00] MICH: It's very cute. I'm very much into it.

[00:23:03] LISS: Me too. Very much into it. . All right, over to Emily in chemistry, Emily and Toby. Partners again. And she asks him what he was doing the night before she's fishing to see if he's a, and he says that he was at the grill doing homework and she can't believe that he would do homework at the grill.

[00:23:24] LISS: Isn't it noisy? And he's like, well, it's better than Jenna blasting like her lecturers at home. I'd rather go do it somewhere quiet. And they have Fred Banter about Art and Circus Survive, which is a band that they both mutually love. Did you ever listen to Circus Survive? I remember one song and I, of course the title is escaping me now, but at that time I was like, oh, they just like threw circus.

[00:23:50] LISS: Survive is like name in there. It, it's just so random to. Yeah.

[00:23:55] MICH: Yeah. I, I like really am into Emily and Tova

[00:23:59] LISS: [00:24:00] for me too. Like I very

[00:24:02] MICH: much like I was

[00:24:02] LISS: excited for this. Oh, same. This is my favorite friendship of the show so far. I love this so much. It's my favorite chip, I should say. Like, I don't even, it doesn't have to be romantic.

[00:24:13] LISS: It's just my favorite chip. Like, they're great. They're great together. Yeah. So Toby asks Emily if she wants to meet up at the grill later on, maybe they'll study, maybe they'll hang out. And so she does accept, but when she gets there, she's a little embarrassed because she sees Toby and she also sees that Hannah and Spencer are there.

[00:24:33] LISS: And so she walks over to her friends and Toby immediately is devastated and he's hurt that she went to go sit down with them, completely ignored the fact that he was there. Really shitty. He ends up leaving and while they're having their chat, the waitress does come over and give Emily a mixed tape that Toby, a CD has left for her mix cd, a big cd, and, and the art like drew it and

[00:24:58] MICH: sketched of the cover art, like [00:25:00] this is so nostalgic in the most beautiful way.

[00:25:03] MICH: Like this brought me back to just better

[00:25:06] LISS: times. Same. It was so good. Better times. And she's like, oh shit, this is great. And so then Hannah thinks that this is from Maya and she encourages Emily and she tells her, don't be scared of being with someone who's not conventional. I'll support you no matter what.

[00:25:26] LISS: And I thought that that was so beautiful. I

[00:25:28] MICH: clapped. I was like, yes, Hannah, this, you are so good in this episode. I love you

[00:25:34] LISS: so good. Beautiful little more soul. And Emily, just like, I'm sure she felt relieved in that moment. Yeah. And so the next day the grill, Emily sees Toby there and she goes to apologize to him and she gives him a CD of her own that just says, Toby's like mix on it.

[00:25:50] LISS: And so he does accept and the two hang out and she grabs a coffee and you can tell that they're gonna have a nice afternoon together. And that's my summary. It was a [00:26:00] really easy. Summary to break down this episode was really good. I enjoyed every minute of it and it just was, it was great and I can't wait to discuss it with our patron Mike, who will be on in just a few minutes, so stay tuned.

[00:26:17] LISS: Woohoo.

[00:26:23] LISS: Um, I had a pretty short summary. What did you think of this episode, Mike? Cause I thought it was pretty young.

[00:26:32] MICH: Yeah, it was, it was good. I we're still in season one, so we're the good part of Pretty Little Liars. I, I wanted to ask, um, Michelle, so last episode you had asked Lis if Tom was on the island and she said, no, what would you have done if she would've said yes? Because if this was Gossip girl, it probably would've been a yes and then I think you would've lost it.

[00:26:54] MICH: Tom is who? .

[00:26:56] LISS: He's dad.

[00:26:57] MICH: Oh. Oh my God. [00:27:00] Uh, yeah. I would've been pissed because what the f like it's just too soon to bring these parents in and then just dump 'em on an island. I'm still trying think about the that with dance. I know you're right. Royal . Um, yeah, I think I'm just also trying to get used to the flow of this show.

[00:27:28] MICH: Like I'm, in my mind I'm like, oh, I have this all figured out. And then this episode was like, no, you kind of don't. So just sit back and, uh, enjoy it.

[00:27:36] LISS: Yes, we did enjoy. I guess I'll, I'll introduce Mike since I think we came back from break and I just didn't. So Michael, our very first patron, we are liars.

[00:27:45] LISS: Welcome, welcome.

[00:27:47] MICH: Thank you. Thank you. Hello everyone.

[00:27:49] LISS: Are you excited to talk pll?

[00:27:52] MICH: I am, I am. I didn't think this was ever gonna happen, but here we are. Crazier things have [00:28:00] have happened. So,

[00:28:00] LISS: you know, stranger things have happened on, on the Total Buddy network for sure. Uh, it's just, but we're here. Just so funny.

[00:28:07] LISS: And we're enjoying our ride. This is the fifth episode, five weeks in, and Michelle said, um, earlier that this was her favorite episode so far. Yeah. I mean,

[00:28:18] MICH: compared to last week, last, you know what? Also last week listeners, I apologize for me, just, I don't know what I was watching.

[00:28:28] LISS: I don't .

[00:28:30] MICH: I was in a weird state, I guess I lost words.

[00:28:34] MICH: I cried over ink on my pants.

[00:28:37] LISS: Uh, it was really good. Uh, and then I

[00:28:41] MICH: re-watched last week's episode, some clips, and it's like things were super clear, like Ren took it from the

[00:28:50] LISS: garden. Well, I mean, to, up to your interpretation, I guess, you know, , uh, well, no,

[00:28:58] MICH: he said it so . [00:29:00]

[00:29:00] LISS: Oh, he does say it

[00:29:03] MICH: right. So I don't, again, he says it.

[00:29:05] MICH: Yes. He says, I took this from the garden cuz I went back to watch.

[00:29:12] LISS: Mm-hmm. , what kind of pll fan am I? Oh, wait, remember I didn't wanna do this book. , but, um, I apologize. Wow. I did not even, I must have been thinking of a million different things every time I watched that scene. . Mm-hmm. probably how much I, and the drones made it.

[00:29:30] LISS: And that he drove, he drove, he did drive. Right. Right.

[00:29:33] MICH: Michelle, they didn't walk right. Can we get clarification on this? I think the listeners would like some clarification. ?

[00:29:41] LISS: Yes. They drove, when I was editing, I was laughing so hard cause she just was like, no, no. And I'm like, but. But you're wrong. And she's like, no, I know what I watched.

[00:29:51] LISS: I'm like, well listen, hold on . And she's like, oh my God, I apologize. . Yep. So good. Yep. That was, I [00:30:00] love every minute of it. I had, I had listened to the US laughing about the pen and crying about the pen like five times and it just made me crack up every time. I was like, there's no way I'm cutting any of this.

[00:30:11] LISS: There's no way. Yeah. It was pure gold.

[00:30:14] MICH: Yeah. And I wonder if you know how you read the blooper that the song was different than the subtitles? I wonder if that was at the original air and then they fixed it now on streaming. Maybe that's what I, the second you said that I was like, oh. But it's probably fixed now cuz it's streaming.

[00:30:30] MICH: But good one, back in the day. Good

[00:30:33] LISS: point. Like, all right, well, some trivia. Gov's continuity. This is one of my favorite, uh, trivia so far. So Patrick Adams. He guests started on the show to win back his, at the time, ex-girlfriend Troy and Valario. So I did a deep dive on Troy and Patrick, and so I found out that the two met in 20 2009 [00:31:00] during a play they dated for a year.

[00:31:03] LISS: She broke it off with him and so to get back with her, he like did every which way maneuver he could to get on this show for this small role on Pretty Little Liars to get back together. In 2014, they got engaged in 2016 they got married and they had their first child in 2018. And I was like, that is the most delicious romantic thing I've ever heard.

[00:31:27] LISS: I have a question. Yes. Which one is she? Yes, Spencer. Spencer. Oh, that's real cute. And

[00:31:33] MICH: then she, and then she was on Suits. Oh. Like she did like two. Yeah, they like, yeah, they like dated in suits for an episode or two. Um, that's really cute. And then they went to the, they went to Megan's wedding obviously, and there was like a rumor that they were high for the wedding.

[00:31:51] MICH: Like they got high, there was like a huge like thing going around about like people that were like guests that did drugs [00:32:00] like during the wedding or around the wedding. I don't know. And they were the two that people interest. But there's a really good, because I've also deep dived into them because I think they are, you know how like, um, Blake and Ryan are probably like the greatest, uh, couple, like celebrity couple that they would be best friends.

[00:32:18] MICH: I feel like same thing with those two. If you watch their YouTube video of like knowing your partner or something, I dunno. They get asked questions of like, who knows who better. There are things they just, how they talk like about each other. It's, it's great. They're, I, I ship, I ship them as a couple,

[00:32:33] LISS: like cute.

[00:32:34] LISS: I agree. I think they're super cute. Cute. I'm a fan. My other trivia is that Keegan Allen, who plays Toby revealed in an interview that Toby was supposed to die in this episode, but that Marlene changed her mind and spoilers for the books. I know Mike probably knows this, but Toby does commit suicide in the book.

[00:32:58] LISS: Oh my God. [00:33:00] Yeah. So heavy shit. Um, but I guess she liked him so much that she decided, hey, we'll keep Toby . Wow. Mm-hmm. .

[00:33:09] MICH: Okay, good. Cuz I'm liking Tober

[00:33:11] LISS: fur. Same. He's like my favorite character at the moment. Same one of them. Yeah. Same. And the episode title is an Illusion to the 1994 romantic comedy film, reality Bites directed by Ben Stiller.

[00:33:26] LISS: Hmm. So some continuity when Spencer is at the club practicing her serve. After she talks to Alex, she throws the ball up and you can still see it in her hand. , when she puts her hand down, you can hear the ball getting hit. . Um, during chemistry class, Toby asked Emily, so whose house did you stay at last night?

[00:33:45] LISS: However, his lips weren't moving and it doesn't match the words he's saying. It happens, yeah. In a text from a, the video attached is label at labeled as 64 37 dot move. But on the act, [00:34:00] mov, I guess we'll call it an mov, right? . Mov file. . I'm like, move. I was like shortening for a movie. Um, but on the video, it's shown as the numbers reversed at the end with the last two digits swapped.

[00:34:14] LISS: As we said, Michelle, Jenna leans into her reflection in the elevator to apply her lipstick. She is supposed to be blind. This is possibly a deliberate error by the filmmakers to make the characters and viewers doubt that Jenna is blind. Yeah. Mm-hmm. , what do you think, Mike?

[00:34:32] MICH: Her? Can she, can she sense. I think she sensed Hannah.

[00:34:38] MICH: Like even if you, you can sense when someone's near you and yes, you prob like, she probably felt like Hannah leaning and, and you know, they usually say when one sense is gone, the others like pick up to Yeah. Heading to make up for it. So I just feel like she just like noticed, like felt her around, you know?

[00:34:59] MICH: Mm-hmm. . [00:35:00]

[00:35:00] LISS: Yeah. Felt aura. But what did you think about her applying lipstick into the elevator door as though she was seeing her purple lipstick? Oh,

[00:35:09] MICH: that was the point they were talking. I thought there was, remember Hannah being, cuz then she, Hannah like goes right up to her and then she's like, you like the color?

[00:35:14] MICH: So that's what I thought you were talking about. Oh yeah. And

[00:35:17] LISS: do you think, I didn't even think she knew it was Hannah. Well, I, or did she think it was someone

[00:35:23] MICH: just random stuff? I think it was just someone random. I don't think she would've known it was Hannah. Yeah, but then she might have picked up on Hannah's voice cuz Hannah tried to just go like, mm-hmm

[00:35:34] MICH: But I feel like I don't

[00:35:35] LISS: mm-hmm. . Yeah, I know Hannah was like trying to disguise

[00:35:38] MICH: herself, but, oh, I get what you mean cuz like the mirror. So why is she looking like it's in a mirror? Ah, I get it. I see. It didn't even clock it. Yeah. That's the only thing I could focus on. I'm like, did they walk or did they drive?

[00:35:51] MICH: See it's same thing, same scenario. That's this, that's my thing for this episode. . Yes, exactly. I'm glad that this is now like [00:36:00] a point of reference that we will use.

[00:36:03] LISS: Did they walk or did they drive? Did they walk or drive? That will be the point of reference they walked. So, um, at this point I will read some music.

[00:36:11] LISS: Are we still into the music? Mike, you're a listener. Do you care about the music? Yeah, I do. Okay. Wow. What a great answer. There

[00:36:18] MICH: was one song. No, no. There was one song. It was funny you mentioned that because there was a song. That was on, and I was like, oh, I should have, there was something you had, I can't remember now, but you had said there, I was like, oh, I forgot that song was on there, but I was gonna make a connection to something.

[00:36:33] MICH: But I don't know. The thoughts gone. It happened a while ago. But yes, we do appreciate the

[00:36:37] LISS: music. All right. So I will, I will read the music. I will read the music. We have, uh, songs by Miko, Katie Herig Jets Overhead Evil Love Aiden Hawkin, love Grenades, Andrew Bell and Jaylene Johnson. All right, so this is a portion where we have some questions.

[00:36:56] LISS: So Mike, since you are here, if you have any, we'll start [00:37:00] with you. Yes.

[00:37:01] MICH: Um, well, I have some just overall comments. I was pulling a Michelle and yelling at the tv, uh, with the whole Aria and Ezra, and I'm like, like if he's worried at the end scene when he was like, you know what, what happens if the school board finds out maybe you should be doing this?

[00:37:16] MICH: If you are worried about people finding out. Maybe that's the red flag right there that you should be like, uh, this isn't right. Like, why? Yeah. Anyway. Yeah. Um, would you either of you rather join? So if you were in high school, would you rather be a member of the real love weights or the clean teen. Uh, probably clean teens because Chase is super cute.

[00:37:41] LISS: Yeah, that's so true. So, so true. We'll get a little introduction to the Real Love Weights Club next week, so maybe you'll find some of them attractive, but, uh, chase was

[00:37:51] very,

[00:37:52] MICH: no, I doubt it. I'll stick with Chase . What about you, Mike? Uh, clean Teen. [00:38:00] Yeah. A hundred percent. Yeah. Um, have either of you ever lost something on purpose so that the other person would win?

[00:38:07] LISS: No. Never. I'm way too competitive for that. Uh, I don't think

[00:38:13] MICH: so. I'm trying to think. Usually I don't win, so I'm like . .

[00:38:19] LISS: It's, uh,

[00:38:22] MICH: I'm trying to think. No.

[00:38:26] LISS: Mm,

[00:38:27] MICH: I've lost on of you. Yeah, I've lost on mini Put one. Mini put, which is what we call mini, mini golfer. Put put, mini put. I've lost Michelle. I've lost, um, once on a date cuz we had the, we had a pack like the loser buys dessert, so I wanted to buy dessert anyway,

[00:38:45] LISS: so that's, well that's acceptable.

[00:38:48] LISS: What kinda ice assume did you get ? It was, how do you assume it's ice

[00:38:51] MICH: cream? Cream? It was a pumpkin pie blizzard from, uh, dairy Queen actually.

[00:38:56] LISS: Yum. I, I remember what [00:39:00] cream,

[00:39:00] MICH: but I just know it was fall time and I've never had a pumpkin No. Did anyway.

[00:39:04] LISS: Sorry. Did your date,

[00:39:07] MICH: uh, know that you let them win? No, because I crumpled up the scorecard.

[00:39:11] MICH: I was the one keeping score. And then I kept the scorecard, obviously, and I to like the book, you know, the box of things that you end up throwing out, that you burn up the ceremonial burn after the breakup. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know ? Yeah. I never did that. I still have all my things, but yet you find someone who essays weird on their computer on the desktop years later.

[00:39:38] MICH: Put it on a drive.

[00:39:40] LISS: Put it on a drive. She's not wrong. She's not wrong. I know. I'm not

[00:39:44] MICH: wrong. It's ridiculous.

[00:39:47] LISS: And you don't have it just

[00:39:48] MICH: labeled, like it's just Okay. Continue forward. . Um, Michelle, I, I dunno if you've clocked it, but I clocked a sort of similarity to you and Ezra in this episode. We found [00:40:00] out that, ready?

[00:40:01] MICH: Just wait. I dunno if I can look at you and say this because I'm gonna post it laughing. So we found out that Ezra laughs in his sleep. And Michelle, you like to chant? Prawns. Prawns, prawns. Prawns in your asleep .

[00:40:16] LISS: Okay. First off, first

[00:40:18] MICH: off, I woke up chanting prawns and

[00:40:23] LISS: that's a difference. The difference is she didn't sleep talk.

[00:40:28] LISS: She woke up talking . Right? Oh,

[00:40:34] MICH: I bet our listeners might be confused on what that means. Mike, when did I tell that story? Did I tell it to you in person or was

[00:40:44] LISS: that on the podcast? It was on the podcast and Ingrid was definitely, Ingrid was

[00:40:48] MICH: there. It was back in it, yeah, it

[00:40:50] LISS: 3D

[00:40:54] LISS: Wow.

[00:40:54] MICH: It's been that long since I had. Okay. Yeah. Quick too long. Didn't read. [00:41:00] I don't eat shrimp anymore or prawns. Well actually fish anymore. But that's a whole thing. That's a whole other thing because I woke up one day chanting prawns and it disgusted me. And to me, prawns are the most vile creature on this earth.

[00:41:13] LISS: It's gross. I mean, it's gross when you see the eyeballs and the, the it scrubs. Okay, let's move on. I

[00:41:19] MICH: keep saying this, like I get riled up and I'm like, okay, move on. Um, and then the one last thing did you note, oh, well, two things. Uh, did you, did either of you notice Hannah opening the door at the end and she used her sleeve as to not leave fingerprints?

[00:41:35] MICH: She like put her sleeve over her hand and opened the door and I was like, yeah. Do you think they're gonna dust for your fingerprints, Hannah? It was, it was quite, uh, interesting. She washes

[00:41:44] LISS: a lot of true crime, you know? Yeah.

[00:41:46] MICH: Well she knows she's gotta cover her tracks . And then I just liked how Hannah was like trying to be a supporter for Emily at the end.

[00:41:54] LISS: That was, yeah. I love

[00:41:55] MICH: it. I love having this episode. Yeah. [00:42:00]

[00:42:00] LISS: So Vic asks, Mike, well, I guess we can, we can all answer your favorite liar currently, I guess we could do currently, and then you could do overall being that you've seen the show.

[00:42:13] MICH: Uh, so if it's the book, it's Aria, but in the show it's Spencer. Mm.

[00:42:21] LISS: Okay. Okay. Wow. What about you, Michelle, so far? Uh,

[00:42:27] MICH: currently it's a tie between Spencer and Hannah. Same,

[00:42:34] LISS: same

[00:42:34] MICH: with with Aria. Still at the

[00:42:36] LISS: bottom. See

[00:42:37] MICH: Hannah's at the bottom for me. And book and show. Wow.

[00:42:43] LISS: Wow. Cause Hannah, I think, and we'll see how I feel, obviously when we're done, but Hannah was my favorite character.

[00:42:48] LISS: Yeah. For sco. Yeah.

[00:42:51] MICH: I don't know. I just, I know we're all able to have our own opinions, but my ears is the wrong one. . .

[00:42:58] LISS: That's fine. It's okay. [00:43:00] Just like she gives will the tea and she gives Will the, like the disgust guy for loving, um, Emily and Maya so much.

[00:43:07] MICH: No, we can love them, but like to like these bold statements of like, this might be my favorite ship.

[00:43:14] MICH: And will, you don't talk like that. You saying like, this may be my favorite ship of all the total Betty shows is a bold

[00:43:21] LISS: statement. Bold statement. Well, he said it as like the beginnings of the fluttering blooming romance. That's really enticing. I know. It's crazy. I mean, flip. I like a

[00:43:33] MICH: who is, who is your number one ship of the toilet?

[00:43:37] MICH: Betty shows Michelle. I mean, we digress here, but you know, that's what we do. Oh, it's Seth and Ryan. Oh, it's Seth and Ryan. It's my, they're my favorite. Oh, it's not, it's not. Uh, Archie and Veronica don't. What did you think I was gonna say? What did you think I was, I dunno what Archie and Veronica, I wanted to River Pod because River Pod's the forgotten child.

[00:43:59] MICH: You no [00:44:00] one ever talks about you were the only one who remembers. River Pod. River Pod. I'm dedicating it to you, Mike. That is for you buddy. There you go. Thank you. Thank you.

[00:44:11] LISS: If you guys are

[00:44:12] MICH: interested, we did do Riverdale for a hot second. Yeah. We're

[00:44:16] LISS: on our first seasons for more information

[00:44:18] MICH: Beach. And now we did four.com/ it's podcast network work as it is a patron exclusive.

[00:44:24] MICH: Exactly. Thank you. There's multiple tears on that and you'll learn about that at the end of the show. So please, uh, continue with thing. . You, you very well. Right. I'll also be an emoji.

[00:44:37] LISS: Can you tell he is been listening for five years. Yeah. Um, so who has the better parents?

[00:44:48] MICH: Uh, can we just say parent? Cause I think it'd be Hannah Ma. Like, I think that's

[00:44:57] LISS: like the parents. I said. Yeah, I'd say Ella and [00:45:00] Ashley's parents right now. But I guess if you had to like put a, a collective and like pick a pair of parents, I think maybe it would be Emily's parents because I mean, well, but Michelle, I'm not discrediting, like Pam's lack of inclusiveness and acceptance and all of that, but like the least problematic right now.

[00:45:22] LISS: Um,

[00:45:23] MICH: I'm actually gonna say Aria's parents are probably the best, even though they're going through it and he cheated on her. Mm-hmm. . But I think both parents are involved. Spencer's parents aren't that horrible yet. But doesn't her mom remind you of I thought she was Benson, but she's not. But they look so much

[00:45:39] LISS: alike.

[00:45:39] LISS: Yes. Yes. I remember the first time watching that. Yeah. Being like, oh my God. Are they twins? Are they sisters? Yeah. Cause they look so much alike. Mm-hmm. . Okay, so Vic says, give each liar a partner from our Betty shows, including Riverdale. She thinks Nate would be good with Spencer. Now I will tell you what I've come up with [00:46:00] being that I was the only one who knew this question was coming.

[00:46:02] LISS: So I thought long and hard about it and you guys could let me know if you agree. So I do think Nate and Spencer would work temporarily because I feel like he would put her first and their home lives are very similar, but I think she needs someone who's a little bit more edgy, rebellious, loosen her up, someone who doesn't give a fuck.

[00:46:24] LISS: So I put Peace Sawyer, I feel like they would be a good mix, obviously if she leaned that way. Um, but then someone who is also maybe a little misunderstood. So I also put Jake GSKi. Someone who is emotionally available and mature. Wow. That is quite the mix you chose. Yes, it's . Um, so who would you think would work well with Spencer

[00:46:54] MICH: Spencer's A Gogetter?

[00:46:56] MICH: Spencer's a go getter. So you'd either need someone to be polar or [00:47:00] opposite

[00:47:01] LISS: because I was trying to think of opposites, you know? Yeah.

[00:47:06] MICH: I could see her with Ryan. I feel like she might like the bad boy. Like, or Luke, I think. I think

[00:47:12] LISS: Luke, Luke. The only reason why I didn't pick Ryan is because I can totally see him going to a dinner at like the Hastings and him being like, I don't belong in this world.

[00:47:26] MICH: He would, he would, you know, I think, I think, I think Spencer has, I mean, Spencer, I think Nate

[00:47:32] LISS: is good for Spencer. Nate. That's a good one. Like Bad boy turned good. And Nate, you know she's similar to No Archable. No Nate

[00:47:40] MICH: Archival. No. Nathan. Yeah. I was

[00:47:43] LISS: like not Nathan on Nathan's stuff. That's

[00:47:45] MICH: such a great idea.

[00:47:45] MICH: I'm like, unless you said the exact same thing I like, are we appear the same? Is this on? Am I hearing the thing? What's going on?

[00:47:55] LISS: We have so many of the same character names. So Nathan and Nate [00:48:00] Different? Yeah. No

[00:48:01] MICH: Nate. No Nate.

[00:48:02] LISS: Nate. Okay. Um, I feel like this is a little bit of a cop out and I'm not trying to ta cast type, but I feel like Maya and Tony from Riverdale are very similar.

[00:48:14] LISS: So I think that they would be good for Emily, but also I'm throwing Peace Sawyer in there too. And also maybe a little bit of Seth Cohen cuz like the music and the Eness. I feel like that could work. Yeah.

[00:48:26] MICH: Yeah, I agree with that. Peace Sawyer and Seth Cohen. Alex, I mean, we're not going make but Alex, Alex, like with that whole like edgy music kind of thing.

[00:48:36] LISS: True. Love that.

[00:48:38] MICH: Yeah, love that.

[00:48:40] LISS: Yeah. What about Hannah? See, I did choose Ryan for Hannah. I feel like he's a little complex, a little wounded, very safe. Um, or then I threw in mouth McFadden because he's your biggest fan. He loves you for your inside and you're out. Like he doesn't give a shit.

[00:48:58] MICH: Oh, Mel. [00:49:00] Uh,

[00:49:01] LISS: Julian.

[00:49:01] LISS: Hannah's tough. Julian.

[00:49:03] MICH: I feel like Julian goes with anyone though. That's a coppo. Julian goes with, Julian goes with everyone. So that's a cop out answer, right? I'll change it. Yeah. I think I like Ryan. I like that

[00:49:13] LISS: pairing.

[00:49:15] MICH: Oh, like what about, what about Matty? Like we've totally forgot about Friday Night

[00:49:19] LISS: Lights.

[00:49:20] LISS: Taylor. I know. No, I haven't. Forgots. No one works this. No one works. I feel like this town doesn't really mesh with the other town. Jason. I can see

[00:49:28] MICH: her. I can see her going with Jason. That whole like, Hardy, like, you know, I can see her with Jason and being supportive of like after the accident.

[00:49:37] LISS: Yeah. Yes. I feel like I could also, for a minute, I also thought that Spencer and Jason would work well together, but I think maybe Hannah works better.

[00:49:47] LISS: Yeah. And then I'm very proud of my Arya, Lucas, Scott, Dan Humphrey. Oh, for sure. Boy. Mm-hmm. . They both are Ezra. Yeah. Ezra vibes. Yeah. Yeah. [00:50:00]

[00:50:00] MICH: Percent for sure. Disgusting. And I, I think page more over Lucas.

[00:50:06] LISS: Yeah. Agreed. Agreed. Mm-hmm. , because Aria, aria, Ezra and Dan are the same person, in my opinion. I know you don't know much about him right now, Michelle, but they feel very similar.

[00:50:17] LISS: Well that's, that's

[00:50:17] MICH: painting a picture. But I said in an episode when they kinda also look a little alike too.

[00:50:23] LISS: Yeah. They're very articulate. Both of them. .

[00:50:26] MICH: Yeah. But maybe Aria would want Rufus instead. So maybe Why is she Ivy? But should we call her Ivy tickets?

[00:50:38] MICH: Uh, so maybe like Rufuss

[00:50:40] LISS: Patch. Yeah. Yeah. I love this game is fun. Yeah, it's is fun. Um, she also wants to know, would you keep a secret to avoid hurting someone or would you tell them? So I guess like for the Aria Ella situation,

[00:50:57] MICH: I feel like this depends on the [00:51:00] situation. I mean, obviously you wanna say, I'll always tell the secret, but then I really think it depends on scenario Mike.

[00:51:06] MICH: It also depends on who the per, like, how close you are to that person. Because there are something like, yeah, there are some like bonds where you can be brutally honest and it's fine and it's better hearing it from your front, like, you know the person, you know. Sometimes it's better hearing it from. At least when you have a strong bond with then finding it out another way.

[00:51:26] MICH: So yeah, I think it really depends. What do you think,

[00:51:29] LISS: Liz? Yeah, I, I honestly think it's a situational, it really depends on whose secret you're keeping. Um, obviously if it's something that's going to harm them, then maybe it's better to keep to yourself.

[00:51:46] MICH: Like, it, it makes sense why Aria kept us. I mean, she's a child and she probably thought she's a child.

[00:51:51] MICH: Ezra, let's repeat this. Come on. Everyone say it together. She is a child. . She is, but uh, like she probably thought if I [00:52:00] say this, this might break up my parents and then it's my fault. Whereas it's better, you know?

[00:52:05] LISS: Right. Right. And now it's, it's truly not her fault. It's all Byron . And Yeah. And his attitude in this is like, what do you want me to do?

[00:52:16] LISS: Do you want me to move out? Do you want me to do this? And she's just like, she's so angry. And he's just so calm and it pisses me off how calm he is about it. He's just like, well, I know he did this thing, so we're either gonna work on it or we're not gonna work on it. Just like he's a turd. She isn't Dick.

[00:52:32] LISS: Yeah. I really don't like him. I think he is probably my least favorite parent on the show right now. Mm-hmm. , um, send Our Liars to our Betty shows so she could see hanging out with Caitlin in the OC . I feel like Aria goes to One Tree Hill. Hannah and Spencer are Gossip Girl. Mm-hmm. and Emily is the [00:53:00] OC.

[00:53:01] LISS: Agreed.

[00:53:01] MICH: Um, but Aria was technically in the OC and she did hang out Kaitlyn. She

[00:53:06] LISS: was And so was Hannah. And

[00:53:08] MICH: so was Hannah. She was Caitlin.

[00:53:09] LISS: That's right. And so was

[00:53:10] MICH: Mona. I know, I know. You're, I know you're listening. Uh, um, Melinda Clark Aria did not play, or Luci ha did not play. Uh, summer as a kid, she played Caitlyn's roommate.

[00:53:25] MICH: It bothers me every time. Uh, I mean, I get it. It's fine. You've only seen the show. Maybe even. I get it. I know, I know. And I know you're listening Mo cuz you are a friend of the podcast. .

[00:53:35] LISS: She is a friend of the pod. She is a friend of the pod , not this pod, but maybe another, um, will we see more of Ezra's friends and will he now know all about a Michelle?

[00:53:49] LISS: I don't, I,

[00:53:49] MICH: yeah, I've been wondering about this. So we even brought this up in the first half, if she's gonna go back and explain who a is. or she's just gonna be like, oh no, he [00:54:00] ended it with me. He treated me poorly. He doesn't believe in me. Hopefully, like I want this to end so badly and I know it doesn't.

[00:54:08] MICH: We got

[00:54:09] LISS: sevens. You think will meet any of Ezra's friends? Maybe potentially family,

[00:54:15] MICH: maybe down the line when they're like in a relationship. Barth, she's a, she's a junior.

[00:54:23] LISS: Yes. Let's do a little light product here. What do you see for the trajectory, if any of Aria? Cause that's our ship name is Aria.

[00:54:32] MICH: Well, they're gonna keep sneaking around and it's gonna be messy and they will date and it's gonna be in private and it's gonna be a lot of will.

[00:54:39] MICH: They won't they? There's gonna be trust. I think perhaps Aria will have a fling with someone else that we will like better, but they will leave and ultimately she will date him when she gets out of high school or there's this time jump that's coming at some point in this show. Yes. And [00:55:00] uh, yeah, I guess I don't know.

[00:55:04] MICH: He'll bring her around or I don't know. And then I could see like, would he lie and bring her around to family and be like, Ooh, she's a my age , even though she looks like a

[00:55:14] LISS: child. . I know they looked really young in this episode. I mean, I know it's first season, but this episode is in the sleepover part.

[00:55:22] LISS: I'm like, wow, these girls look so young. Yeah, they look their age. They do.

[00:55:27] MICH: Did Aria have to tell Esther's friend? Like that. She was his student. She could have just said, I'm a friend of Esra. Would've been fine. But she had to bring up that I, that she was a student.

[00:55:44] LISS: I wonder, do you feel like if it would've, um, if she didn't say, if she said she was a friend and then like someone saw her there, she couldn't really say, oh, I'm a friend of him because he is my teacher.

[00:55:58] LISS: But I mean, obviously she doesn't know. [00:56:00] Hardy and Hardy figured it out real quick.

[00:56:03] MICH: Yeah. And also I think there's such an innocence to her of being like, who cares? I am the student. You are the teacher. Like she's still not registering that. This isn't like, she knows it's bad, but she's not registering like how much trouble he could get in.

[00:56:18] MICH: Yeah.

[00:56:19] LISS: Right. And she does, probably doesn't care cuz she's happy. Right. And he's like, I'm too, but I'm also shitting a brick. I'm scared, , this is my job, my first job probably out of college and I'm gonna screw it up. Right? Yeah. Yep. Uh, Brit asks, were you shocked that Ella had no clue? You were a little, you were surprised, I'm sure because you predicted that she knew.

[00:56:51] LISS: Yeah. A little bit. Yeah. How terrible was Ezra in this episode? First his friends point out how bad this relationship is, and then he blows up on [00:57:00] Aria when she's clearly just telling the truth. Do you think he was right for getting mad at the text message, Mike? Yes. .

[00:57:08] MICH: Well, sorry, Mike. I do, I do think he has a right to get mad because he knows what the situation is.

[00:57:16] MICH: Right. But he didn't actually listen to her. But also the situation sucks. Do you ship them

[00:57:22] LISS: like No. .

[00:57:24] MICH: Okay. He's just like, if you haven't noticed by now, the ships are, are not, there's no, there's no strong competitors for, for the ship of the, the show award. Okay. I'm just gonna, just gonna

[00:57:35] LISS: see that. Not yet.

[00:57:37] LISS: Not yet. There's one Yeah. Fine. Or two, maybe two. May. Yeah. Two if I two that I, I like and I'm excited to see if I still like it. Yeah. We'll

[00:57:50] MICH: see, there's one, I really, there's one I hate. Like there's

[00:57:54] LISS: one I really, I know exactly which one you hate. Okay. I know exactly which

[00:57:57] MICH: one you hate. If you do, that'd be funny.

[00:57:59] MICH: But [00:58:00] there's one like, I don't, like, it's the one that

[00:58:02] LISS: everyone hates.

[00:58:03] MICH: Probably .

[00:58:06] LISS: We're, we're having the telepathy. I will message you on this side. Mm-hmm. . Mm-hmm. . Mm-hmm. . Mm-hmm. . So Mike, do you, do you think that he was, he was right for, or he has a right to get mad about the text message? Yes, but

[00:58:20] MICH: he doesn't have a right to look at her phone.

[00:58:22] MICH: I think he should have just shut off her phone or turned down the volume or buzzing, cuz he said it kept buzzing so he could have just turned it off and then returned the phone to her at school and been like, oh, he, you left this in your desk. Oh wait, , you know,

[00:58:41] LISS: oh wait, no you didn't. And everyone would've been onto it.

[00:58:46] MICH: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, good point. Yeah. He shouldn't have looked

[00:58:50] LISS: at her phone. Yeah. And then Brit see's last question. Would you have thrown the match Mike, like Spencer and her dad did.

[00:58:59] MICH: Oh, [00:59:00] I was like, someone lick something. I was trying to, I was like, I was like, I'm like, shit. It's also just like about the peak.

[00:59:08] MICH: Okay. Sorry. Just from last, have you peaked? And I was like, did you mean, have you peaked in high school? I was really confused about the thing from last year, but the, or last, sort, last episode about the peak. And I'm, I also didn't understand it. Sorry. Once again, we digressed it last week's

[00:59:21] LISS: episode, but yes, I, when they said peaked, I also thought peaked in high school.

[00:59:26] MICH: Yeah. I was, I was poor. War choice the match. Um,

[00:59:33] MICH: probably,

[00:59:34] LISS: I don't know. Have you, have you played tennis? Do you like tennis? Uh, I like

[00:59:38] MICH: watching tennis. Uh, I've never played. I've, I've gone on a tennis court by myself with tennis balls, at a tennis racket, but I've never played with no one else.

[00:59:49] LISS: tennis is hard. Yeah, it is. It's really hard. It's a lot harder than you.

[00:59:52] LISS: You remember coordination? I took

[00:59:55] MICH: lessons from Becky, my babysitter. Oh. [01:00:00] I thought that story would go over differently, but Alyssa just like

[01:00:04] LISS: great. I mean, like, that was nice of Becky to teach you. Becky was a great babysitter. . Yeah, she was a nice girl. . Yeah. All right, so let's go on to our favorite scene.

[01:00:17] LISS: Mike, did you have a favorite scene of the episode?

[01:00:20] MICH: Um, I the like, uh, so I said this a little earlier, but when Hannah was with Emily and was like, is there, you know, if there's someone you really like, You know, was trying to Yes. Like be supportive. I really liked that episode,

[01:00:33] LISS: or I loved that part too. I picked Spencer given her dad shit about her writing the essay and her telling her him that she stole it.

[01:00:41] LISS: I was like, yes, you get it, Spencer. Yeah. That was

[01:00:46] MICH: my favorite scene too. Spencer owning it.

[01:00:49] LISS: What about a cringy scene?

[01:00:52] MICH: Oh, there's so many of those , but I think what I said in the first half of Aria and Ezra in [01:01:00] the classroom, and she says, just remember, you're the teacher and I'm the student. Oh,

[01:01:06] LISS: did not, did not go well.

[01:01:08] LISS: Does not sit well. Will you agree Mike? Or you have

[01:01:11] MICH: a different one? Yeah, I have a different one. It's the, it's two scenes, but it's the same thing. The like cringy skinny culture. They were kind of highlighting in this like Aria saying, oh, I'll just eat a granola bar for, um, breakfast. And then Hannah commenting on.

[01:01:27] MICH: That 11 pound. Amber. Amber. Oh, that 11 pound, uh, cheerleader or whatever about how shit. So I was like, oh, cringy, like skinny culture stuff. The

[01:01:39] LISS: two thousands.

[01:01:39] MICH: Okay. And also like the skinny latte just calling her skinny latte.

[01:01:43] LISS: Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm. . Yeah. Yeah. Lots of, um, references there. I actually had one, Ezra and Aria were in the bar with Hardy.

[01:01:54] LISS: I felt that that was super uncomfortable. Um, especially for Hardy being [01:02:00] in the middle. Yeah. If I was hardy, I'd be like, okay, this is definitely, uh, teacher student thing going on here. And just like them talking in front of Aria, like she's one of them when she's in reality is just a child. Yeah. It was bad.

[01:02:15] LISS: Did we have a favorite, A Antic this episode? Something a did that we were impressed by? I like the

[01:02:22] MICH: email. You liked the email? I like the email. Yeah.

[01:02:25] LISS: With the picture. . Yeah. I like that she was just in the closet and nobody knew that. Or they, I shouldn't say she for in the closet and nobody

[01:02:35] MICH: knew. Did Aria really need to put the lipstick on her hand to compare it?

[01:02:40] MICH: Like we all knew it was the same color. Like you could, or you could've just drawn on the mirror. Like did you have to put it on your hand and compare up to it? I, I just, I, I like, I, I don't understand. So

[01:02:51] LISS: someone laugh at that same, I

[01:02:53] MICH: was like, what? No, you ruined this creepy scene and just made it

[01:02:56] LISS: corny.

[01:02:57] LISS: Yeah, agreed. , [01:03:00] do we have any fashion moments? I shadowed out the, uh, juicy, juicy tube lip gloss that Hannah was using. I was like, oh my God. Lancomb Juicy Tube. It was like such a throwback.

[01:03:12] MICH: I liked Hannah's yellow bear crop top that she was wearing. The pajama, her

[01:03:16] LISS: pajama top, top. It was really cute. I like Spencer's tennis outfit.

[01:03:20] LISS: I was gonna say, yeah. Yeah. She looked adorable in that. It was so just perfection. It was perfection. As Spencer is perfection. Yes. Yeah. Um, what about a quote, Mike? Um,

[01:03:35] MICH: I'll, I'll burn you a CD, Toby, because that's just like was mine. That's just like, that's that's, that's just a time capsule of itself. I'll burn you with cd like right there.

[01:03:44] MICH: I know. Captured moment. How, but, okay. So I'm a big fan of Toba fur, but just the way he said it before, he said, I'll burn you with CD was like, oh, the next band I should get you into. Yeah. .

[01:03:59] LISS: That

[01:03:59] MICH: [01:04:00] phrasing was really weird. .

[01:04:01] LISS: Yeah. . Well, Toby's like a little weirdo. It's fine. He's adorable. I love, I love his, um, he's also like someone who's very articulate and Yeah.

[01:04:13] LISS: But yes. Also speaks a little like Yiddish. Well, Edward Col

[01:04:18] MICH: vibes. Yeah.

[01:04:19] LISS: Yes. I call him vibes for sure. He's a vampire. I have Different is good. I like different. This town has too much of the same. And that was also Toby. Yeah, that was good. I was like, that was good. Yes. Toba. Okay. Mike, who was your MVP for the episode?

[01:04:36] MICH: Uh, so Spencer's husband or Hardy, but like,

[01:04:40] LISS: I was like her husband. When

[01:04:43] MICH: I wrote that down I was like, I'm gonna say this, but I was like, I don't want Michelle to think, it's like, it's not a sport like her, like it's like a thing. Her actual, like her real actress's, real life husband.

[01:04:52] LISS: Yeah. I'm pretty sure Hardy is on the island.

[01:04:55] LISS: Yes. Michelle, who was yours [01:05:00] span?

[01:05:01] MICH: So Spencer,

[01:05:02] LISS: Hannah. Good one. Good one. Yeah. I also had Hannah, but we did get votes for Spencer and I did give Sean a blue ribbon for owning the virginity club and trying to take the blame for Hannah crashing the car. I thought that was sweet. Okay. Um, also, Mike, I did give Michelle like that Sean's a okay.

[01:05:21] LISS: Because she's like, can you just tell me if he's good or not? Because I feel like you could just let me off the hook with that. So I'm like, he's good. Yeah. , I'm like, I don't really remember anything else that happens with him, but he's fine. Um, what about his shittiest? Mike? Ezra.

[01:05:37] MICH: I mean that's

[01:05:38] LISS: Ka but Ezra.

[01:05:39] LISS: Ezra, I dunno. Like

[01:05:42] MICH: you're worried about the school board finding out that Stop dating. I was yelling at the tv, like yelling at the tv. So

[01:05:49] LISS: true. Prn. So true.

[01:05:55] LISS: prn prawns. Pros. . That's so true. Ezra, you're such a [01:06:00] hypocrite. . Uh, but I picked Peter. We had votes for Peter. We had votes for Emily too. I did. I. Think Emily, um, did something shitty to Toby, but I get why she did it. She's still in high school. Spencer's dad, Peter Spencer's dad.

[01:06:17] MICH: I, I saw the confusion look on the shot.

[01:06:18] MICH: Michelle was like, I was like, Michelle doesn't know who Peter is. Spencer's dad. Yeah, because I wrote down Spencer's dad. Okay. So

[01:06:23] LISS: Spencer's dad is Peter and Veronica is her mother. Okay. Which we didn't see this episode, but Got it. Yeah. Um, so we, we did get equal votes for Peter and Emily and like I said, I do, I understand why people chose Emily.

[01:06:38] LISS: This really, it hurt me to watch. Yeah. But I understand. I get it. Empathize. Yeah. All right, so it's time for a Betty of the week.

[01:06:49] MICH: Before we do that, I have a pitch for a new segment. Please do. If you. You can edit this out. If you [01:07:00] don't like it, I'm all ears. But I was thinking you can, this new segment can be called The Rosewood Shop, which gets its name from the ice cream shop that's in Elmwood City, which is from Arthur, which is the next Total Betty show as people know, you know Arthur.

[01:07:15] MICH: So I had to steal your name. So Sam, if you were listening, this is for you, . Um, so I was thinking we bring back the ice cream, we can call it Rosewood shop. You know, I feel like that's what the ice cream store would be called

[01:07:28] LISS: in Rosewood. Like, could we do like shoppy? Like, like that's Taylor. Yeah,

[01:07:33] MICH: yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

[01:07:34] MICH: That's also, yeah. Yeah. You know what I meant? Um, just making sure. So, but I'm gonna kind of change it up each week. I, I, I might not, I might not do necessarily what the episode's about. It might be character based or it might be some general theme or something. It's gonna be different. I feel like we gotta mix it up a little.

[01:07:52] LISS: I'll take whatever you

[01:07:53] MICH: got Mike, but I think a new segment we can kind of launch for, for we Are Liars. Um, I love it. So [01:08:00] this week I chose, uh, chocolate therapy by Ben and Jerry's. So I picked this one because therapy is, uh, huge, uh, theme. Throughout this episode, we have, um, Byron mentions that maybe they should go to couples therapy to work out his issues with Ella.

[01:08:15] MICH: Byron is Aria's father Michelle? I don't know if I know. No one should know. Okay. Uh, and then all the liars should probably go to therapy to talk about their best friend dying. I mean, that's also, you know, and then they have their own individual problems besides that. So Aria should go to see therapy about her, also her family, like keeping the secret from her dad and for her dad, from her mom.

[01:08:37] MICH: Uh, Hannah has her issues obvious, like some weight body iss, like self issues. Um, and then there's probably issues with her dad as well. Maybe she may, she might feel abandoned. Um, Spencer and Spencer has also family issues with Melissa and always being second to Melissa. That's gotta be something to talk about.

[01:08:57] MICH: And then Emily, uh, it [01:09:00] seems like she's kind of questioning her sexuality, so that's maybe something she can talk about in therapy. It may be good to, for someone to listen to or to have someone to listen to. So that's why I chose Chocolate Therapy by Ben and Jerry's. And it is, uh, chocolate ice cream with chocolate cookies and swirls of chocolate pudding cuz when you need therapy, nothing is more therapeutic than c.

[01:09:22] LISS: That's so true. And chocolate pudding. Yeah. What an interesting, uh, twist in an ice cream sounds. Oh, I loved this. Thanks. I had to

[01:09:31] MICH: launch it when I was on it, so like, this is perfect. I was the guest. I like, okay, we'll launch it here and it can be going forward, .

[01:09:38] LISS: It's perfect. And I look forward to hearing all of your other creations.

[01:09:42] LISS: Yes, same. All right, well, on a happy note, I will announce our Betty of the Week.[01:10:00]

[01:10:01] LISS: That's

[01:10:06] LISS: you're a total. It's Tara , the Terra.

[01:10:11] MICH: Can we do the, we're on the rollercoaster vibe.

[01:10:17] LISS: Oh my God. That's like the second or third time Mike's gotten to do rollercoaster with us on a podcast. I Ursula. Great. That's good. I know we should bring it back. Maybe what we can do is we can go on the Rosewood shop and every time like we read bike's, ice cream, we could go on the rollercoaster in honor of Mikes.

[01:10:37] LISS: Um, but in all seriousness, Tara is our patron, our Betty of the week. We are so excited that you have joined for the year. We hope you like your stay here. Our friends are fun, right, Mike? Yeah. . And, uh, we just wanted to truly just say thank you so much for joining the network. We look forward to getting to know [01:11:00] you and I'm sure all of the buddies are excited.

[01:11:03] LISS: And hopefully you'll join us over on Discord so we get to chat to you, chat with you. Thank you. Thanks, Tara

[01:11:14] LISS: All right, Mike, it's time for a review.

[01:11:17] MICH: I was gonna say it was strange because you were talking and I'm like, have I heard this before? I'm like, this is the second one that's that's joined for the year. And I was like, oh, no. Mondays was live. So we heard, so I would've heard, like I already heard, this has never happened where I've heard the two.

[01:11:32] MICH: Anyway, sorry. It's a long moment for me. That's my face. I dunno if you saw my expression, like been recognizing where I heard this before. Sorry. So

[01:11:40] LISS: I, I'm so surprised that Mike doesn't remember where he has heard something. , right?

[01:11:45] MICH: They walked Mike, they

[01:11:47] LISS: walked, he walked. What Mike was referring to was our live podcast this week for talking Texas forever.

[01:11:54] LISS: Our Friday Night Lights podcast. If you're interested in watching us live and joining us each week for [01:12:00] Discord chat, head over to Patreon. It's in the description for the episode, and you'll have a good time with us. All right, Michelle, it's time for a review. I think we have one to read.

[01:12:12] MICH: We sure do. So excited.

[01:12:17] MICH: Phone emoji from cupcake. Five, five, one two, five stars total. Betty and pll. Two of my faves. I can't wait to go on this wild ride with my favorite ladies.
