I’m Luke Summerhayes and I love Comfey.
Most people, even if they don’t know anything else about the culture of the Hawaiian islands, are familia with the lei. A wreath, usually of vines and flowers, worn around the neck, it has become the universal symbol of Polynesia in popular culture. Get off the plane, put on the Lei and enter paradise.
Of course, this custom actually has a long history and great significance. Lei have been worn in religious ceremonies, important celebrations and to denote royalty for centuries. Lei day is celebrated in spring each May, and the techniques for braiding them can be deeply complex.
Comfey is a fairy type Pokemon which resembles a floating ley, a cute little critter holding a ring of flowers which extends around from the back of its head and loops all the way to the front.
Sun
It attaches flowers to its highly nutritious vine. This revitalizes the flowers, and they give off an aromatic scent.
Moon
Baths prepared with the flowers from its vine have a relaxing effect, so this Pokémon is a hit with many people.
It is considered very disrespectful to discard a lei which ahs been presented – as it is with any gift in any culture – so even when not being worn, Lei are often hung up for their aromas.
Shield
These Pokémon smell very nice. All Comfey wear different flowers, so each of these Pokémon has its own individual scent.
The name comfey of course refers to a fairy which makes one feel comfortable. The Japanese name, Cuwawa, combines the English words cure and flower, as written in Japanese phonetics.
Scarlet
It uses its vine to pick flowers. The flowers that Comfey attaches to itself develop healing properties.
Violet
It prefers areas with lots of flowers. A Comfey adorned with flowers is a happy Comfey, and the flowers gain healing effects.
With abilities like Triage and Natural Cure, this Pokemon can be a handy healer in the competitive scene. It most notably made a name for itself in Pokemon Unite, where it is an extremely effective healer.
I’ve never taken a trip to Hawaii, or anywhere in the Polynesian islands or the phillipines. Id love to one day see the blue seas and green hills, and smell the aroma of a lei around my neck. For now, a Comfey on my Pokemon team and the sights and sounds of Alola will be enough.
