Strategy, Solutions, & Sanity

Feeling disorganized, overwhelmed, or like your team just isn't performing the way it should?
In this AMA Quickcast, I’m breaking down the first thing I audit when a business owner comes to me feeling maxed out — whether they’re solo or leading a team of 50. This isn’t a full operational overhaul. It’s a laser-focused check on one critical issue: goal-task alignment.
If you're constantly busy but not making real progress, this is where I’d start. Because more often than not, the problem isn’t a lack of effort — it’s misaligned execution.
🎯 In this episode, I cover:
  • The real definition of productive (and why “busy” isn’t it)
  • What goal-task alignment looks like in practice
  • Why this is the fastest way to identify performance gaps
  • How to run a mini audit on your own calendar, inbox, and task list
  • What misalignment symptoms really point to
Whether you’re the only one running the show or leading a growing team, this quickcast will help you start untangling the overwhelm and focus your energy on what actually moves the needle.

In this week's ask me anything quick cast episode I'm gonna break down what exactly I would audit first in a business. And this would go for whether you are a solopreneur or you've got a team, team of 20, 50, a hundred employees, whatever. If you were, if you were to come to me and have this feeling around disorganization, a lack of accountability, a frustration in low performance, or just kind of feeling over capacity, overwhelmed, any of those types of things that would point to a people or process issue.

Then this would be the first thing I would evaluate.

📍 Welcome to Strategy Solutions and Sanity, the show for family run businesses and serial entrepreneurs who are done letting chaos run the show. I'm Sam, your business and team strategist and your No Fluff Guide to Making Business Simple and fun. This is a quick cast, a short, sharp dose of strategy and action.

'cause I know sometimes you just need that quick next step to get your sanity back. So let's get into it.

The first thing I would evaluate is goal task alignment. This is one of my six pillars of operational excellence and the reason why I would pick this first is because it would very quickly highlight where our disconnection is between output and outcomes.

Now, when I'm talking about goal task alignment, I'm really talking about productivity. And in some content I have termed profitable productivity, but I actually find that super redundant. And I've only said that because most people misunderstand what exactly productivity is.

And so I very quickly, I want you to know that when I talk about productivity, I'm really referring to the outcomes of whatever you're doing. What's the ROI on the time and energy that you're putting into a task or project?

So it's not about being busy, it's about being productive, right?

So goal task alignment would be looking at that and that is pretty much saying, Hey, these are the things that we said we wanted to achieve. Here are our goals, and then here are the things that we're actually doing the tasks, those day-to-day to-dos .

More often than not, if you're experiencing like that over capacity feeling or some disorganization or a frustration with low performance or the outcomes of the things that you're putting a lot of energy into, then there's probably misalignment in goals and tasks.

And that would also then help us understand where are we having some inefficient processes? Like where have we overcomplicated a process because we thought we wanted to do X, Y, Z, but it's not helping us actually achieve this goal or. Hey, we said this was a goal, but because of the market, because of the team that we have, the customers that we have, the projects we've attracted or whatever, we've ended up focusing on these things so this original goal is not really our priority anymore, right?

It could happen on both sides, that goal or the task side. And so I would really be looking at where are we spending our time and what are the results of where we're spending our time? And are we misaligned in certain areas?

And I'd also be very clear that that would just be the first step of an audit because a big thing when it comes to improving, when it comes to effective change management is going to be realizing that you also have to understand the root cause.

So if you're misaligned in goals and tasks and where you're spending your time, then that is a symptom of a deeper issue, but that would at least point our compass in the right way of where to then dig in further. So if you're experiencing those things in your business,

I'd encourage you to evaluate what's on your calendar, what's in your inbox, what you end up putting on your to-do list, what distracts you throughout the day. Look at all of those things either for yourself or for your team, and compare them against the big goals or the visions that you have set out to achieve and where you are in making progress in those things.

Thanks. Alright, that's it for today's, ask Me Anything Quick cast again, that was super quick, so we didn't dive too far into what exactly that kind of audit would look like, but those would be kind of your, your main focus or concept on the steps to take there. If you have other challenges that you are 📍 experiencing when it comes to your business and team strategy, hiring, delegation, anything like that, I'd love to dive deeper into it in a future, ask me anything quick cast episode, just find me on LinkedIn.
