Welcome back to Chapter and
Verse Junior with Dewey and Jill.
This is a fun place for kids
to learn about God, the Bible,
and how much Jesus loves you.
So buckle up for today's story
because this is one adventure
you are not gonna wanna miss.
Let's go
Dewey Hey, how are you?
I'm great.
How are you doing?
Good.
Hey, guess what?
What?
Remember that last one when we were
talking about the Good Samaritan?
Yeah.
And that Hershey's?
Yeah.
We need to update everybody.
We do need to update everybody.
So do you wanna update
them, or do you want me to?
I don't care.
I will.
Okay.
Spoiler alert.
We got some chocolate.
We did.
We didn't eat the whole bar- Nope ⦠but
the person was willing to share.
Yep.
So we got, like, the
little square, like theâ¦
There was three squares in one.
Yeah.
You know how they are.
It was Hershey's, and it was so good.
It was tasty.
I just wish I had some marshmallows
and graham crackers to go with it.
Oh, man.
S'mores are the best.
I need another one, and,
and now we've eaten it.
Oh, well.
Maybe we can find some
after we're done here.
Maybe.
Maybe.
Or ice cream.
That's true.
You know, Dairy Queen has a really
good s'mores Blizzard right now.
Let's go.
I'm down.
Do we have to do this now?
I can just go get it.
Yeah.
Well, this one I think is a
little bit short if we're-
Okay ⦠if we're- All right.
Let's go ⦠less distracted.
What's this one called?
So this one is actually, um, called
the Parable of the Lost Sheep.
I thought we'dâ¦
That's a good impression of a sheep.
Thanks.
Where's this one found?
Um, this one is found in Luke chapter 15.
That's, the other one was in Luke.
Mm-hmm.
We can't remember- Well- ⦠where,
but it was in Luke.
The, the Gospels are
all relatively similar.
Like, they all cover the same themes and-
Oh ⦠just from different perspectives,
different- Okay ⦠points of view.
Yeah.
Did Luke write Luke?
Yeah Was he a, was he a disciple?
Uh-uh.
Why'd he write it?
Who was he?
I think Luke was a physician.
Oh.
Yeah.
He a smarty pants.
He was a smarty pants, but apparently he
observed enough that he, and he followed
Jesus enough that he wrote it all down.
Made it in the book.
Okay.
Yeah.
All right.
So there's hope for you, Dewey.
Think he'd let me add to it?
Well, no, the Bible says it, it's done.
Oh.
But, you know.
Maybe he'll give me an
idea for a different book.
Yeah.
You can always write
some commentary on it.
I already know what I wanna call it.
The Book of Dewey?
No.
Oh.
I wanna call it- That's what you
were talking about last time,
is having a book named Dewey
well, I changed my mind.
Okay.
I wanna call it I, I
Hate You Most on Sunday.
It's about Smarty.
My goodness, Dewey.
I don't think that if you have
that kind of attitude, I'm
not sure God will bless it.
Well, I mean, it might be, it might be
where I turned around and liked him.
That would, that, that would just get
people interested It would be past tense.
I hated you most on Sunday.
Okay.
I hated you most on Sunday.
He acts up on Sunday.
I think you might be needing to
look in the mirror a little bit too.
I'm nice.
Uh, you are nice, Dewey.
But so is Smarty.
Smarty's- Do you, have you met Smarty?
I have met Smarty.
Okay.
I talk to Smarty all the time.
We can talk about it later.
Remember what we talked about
last time- It's getting me, it's
getting me in a bad mood now Well,
I don't want you in a bad mood.
Because I need to hear about Jesus.
You, you do need to hear about some
Jesus, and maybe go back and listen
about the Good Samaritan- ⦠and
how we don't need to be like that.
I guess.
All right, let's go.
Okay, here we go.
So we're in Luke chapter 15, and, um,
we're just gonna start in verse one
even though the story itself doesn't
actually start until verse three.
Okay.
So it says, "At that time, many bad
people and men who took taxes from
people were coming to listen to Jesus."
So the bad guys were coming.
They were stealing from people.
Mm-hmm.
I don't think our tax collectors now,
I don't even know what they're called.
IRS agents in the US.
Do they steal from people?
Uh, yeah.
Unfortunately, some of them do.
Not all of them.
Oh.
But it's- Okay ⦠and there's
a fancier word for it now.
It's, you know, embezzlement
and fraud and stuff like that.
Maybe we better not talk about that.
I mean, as with any profession,
if you're doing it right, you've
got nothing to worry about.
Okay.
But if you're doing it wrong,
you should probably repent.
But they came to listen to Jesus.
They did come to listen to Jesus.
Even though they weren't good people.
Yeah.
Well, the Bible is pretty clear
that even the demons flocked to him.
Well.
So you can't stay out
of the presence of God.
He's the greatest.
Yep.
Anyway, so verse two says, "The
Pharisees and the teachers of
God's law did not like this.
They said, 'This man is friendly
with people that do not obey God.
He even eats with them in their homes.'"
Well, I mean- That's
terrible ⦠that's okay.
Exactly.
Jesus was nice to everybody.
Jesus was nice to everybody.
He loved everybody.
Mm-hmm, and he still does.
Yeah.
Yep.
They were m- it, they were muttering.
They were.
They were- Exactly.
They were grumbling and- They're jerks
⦠just always had something to say.
Maybe that's what we should do
on the other podcast, is for our
Jerks of the Bible stories- Yes
we can do Pharisees.
Talk about the Pharisees.
Yes.
Good idea.
Yep.
Good idea.
All right.
So verse three says, "So
Jesus told them this story."
He's talking to the, the
Pharisees and everybody now.
"Think about a man who has 100 sheep."
Eh, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh.
Mm-hmm.
Only times 100.
Time- I can't do that many.
I know.
Me neither.
Sorry.
That's okay.
We can use our imaginations.
Okay.
They were probably really loud.
They probably were.
That sounds like my cat
when he sees a bird.
I have seen those videos.
I don't have a cat.
Yeah.
Anyway, so think about
a man who has 100 sheep.
He may lose one of them.
What does he do then?
He leaves- He just leaves it
there because he's got 100.
Well, he does have 100, but
then- And who wants the headache?
Who wants the headache to
go and find their sheep?
I mean, it's just a sheep.
If you had 100 of any pet.
I like dogs.
Okay, if you had 100 dogs and one
got lost- That would be a dream.
It would be a dream, and what if- We
only have one ⦠what if your, what
if one of your 100 dogs got lost?
Would you just be like, "Meh"?
No, I love dogs.
Exactly.
Well, this guy loves his sheep.
So it's, Jesus says he leaves all
of his other sheep in the fields.
He leaves them.
Yeah, he leaves them.
He don't care about them.
He just cares about this one.
They're okay.
He knows that they are safe.
They're in the field.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
So he leaves all of his other sheep in
the fields, and then he goes and he looks
for that sheep that has become lost.
That's nice.
Mm-hmm.
And he looks until he finds it.
Like, he doesn't give up.
What if it took him all night long?
Doesn't matter.
What about the other ones?
They're in the field.
They're safe.
Oh.
So when he finds the one
sheep, he is very happy.
He lifts it up, and he puts
it across his shoulders, and
then he carries it back home.
I've been on somebody's shoulders.
Have you?
My dad's, yeah.
It was fun.
Did he just hold onto your arms?
Why do you have to bring it up?
I'm just trying to figure out
logistically how it worked.
Yes, he just hung onto my arms.
Okay.
I don't wanna talk about it.
Okay.
All right.
So it says, "He carried it back home.
He speaks to all of his friends and to the
people that live near him, and he says,
'I have found the sheep that I lost.'"
He's bragging.
Yeah.
He's- I found it, I found it,
I found it ⦠he's excited.
Y'all stop, can stop
looking 'cause I found it.
Mm-hmm.
It says, "So come to my house and
we can all be happy together."
And have a party.
I tell you this, when one
person turns back to God, it
causes a lot of joy in heaven.
What happens?
What do you think happens?
There's a celebration.
There's a big old party.
Like food and- Angels and food and-
⦠music and- All the, all the things
⦠what's your favorite party game?
Mm, that's a good question.
I'm a trivia girl.
I like trivia.
I'm not smart enough for that.
Do you like karaoke?
Yes.
There's probably a lot
of karaoke going on.
They're singing karaoke in heaven.
Mm-hmm.
It says, "There's more joy about
that one person than about 99
people who already obey God."
Well, that kinda seemsâ¦
You know, that reminds me of
another parable, but we can
talk about that one later.
Mm-hmm.
It does remind me of another one.
So they're having a party over this one.
How did the otherâ¦
Are the other 99 invited?
Yeah.
Oh, okay.
They're, they're followers.
Well, then everybody gets the
free food and free karaoke.
Yeah.
Everybody's there.
That's good.
Because everybody is excited
that this one is back.
So what does this have
to do with anything?
Not everybody has 100 sheep.
Not everybody has 100
sheep, but we are the sheep.
So when Jesus is talking about this,
remember we talked about - parables being
stories that mean something else, right?
Oh.
So in this, in this
parable, we are the sheep.
Well, I'm already one of the 99.
Right.
But I do have a friend
that doesn't know Jesus.
Soâ¦
So he's going looking for him.
Jesus is looking for that sheep.
That kinda makes me happy but sad, too.
Well, what would, what should you do?
Well, I've already talked
to him about Jesus.
Okay.
Well, then all, all you can do
at this point is, you know, still
talk to him about Jesus- But I'm
still his friend ⦠when you can.
Yeah.
And just pray for him.
And I, I have him over to play sometimes.
I bet he likes that.
Yeah.
I'm not like those Pharisees.
No, those Pharisees- They'reâ¦
They're probably talking
about me right now.
Well- "Do he has, do he has a
friend that's not-" If they were
here- "⦠that doesn't love Jesus?"
If they were here, they
definitely would be.
Well, I'm still gonna be his friend.
That's, that's what you're supposed to do.
You're supposed to still
be friends with people.
You're still supposed to love people
even if they aren't following Jesus.
Yeah.
I will.
I don't think Smartie does.
I don't know that for sure, butâ¦
You don't think Smarty- Maybe once
you have him on, you can talk to him.
I bet you could talk some sense into him.
I
I bet.
I bet I could talk some sense into Smarty.
Can I be on, too?
That would be an interesting situation.
Yeah.
W- would you promise to
behave yourself- I always have
and be nice?
Did you say you always have?
I'm always have.
You said behave.
I'm always have.
I said to behave yourself, like
to, to be nice, to- I'm always
nice ⦠maintain decorum.
What's that mean?
It means to behave yourself.
That made me think of
d- decorating my room.
Maintain a decorated room.
I sure will.
Okay.
Well, if you can promise to still
get along with him and be, be
kind, dare I say, professional.
You know, the Bible
says, I don't remember.
It's a, a long word.
I think Thessalonians.
It says, "Always try to be kind."
Mm-hmm.
It says try.
Well, that's because the Bible knows
that we are human and are not- So I try
always gonna get it right.
I try sometimes.
As long as you are genuinely trying and
you aren't like, "Well, it's okay if I'm
not kind because it just said to try."
Okay, I'm not gonna
talk about that anymore.
I didn't think so.
Okay.
Sometime we'll have Smarty and me.
I think that would be a
really, really fun time.
Let's do it next time.
Oh my gosh, Bible verses.
We can doâ¦
He knows them all.
He don't follow them all- He
does ⦠but he knows them.
Well, you know, I don't know what he
talks about with you in the puppet closet,
but, um, you know, he doesn't always win.
No, he doesn't.
So- 'Cause I watched it once.
He tells me he wins all the time.
Yeah.
But I know he doesn't.
He does win from time
to time, but not always.
He does that dumb dance.
He does do that dance.
I think it's a fun dance.
He should start doing karaoke.
That'd be more fun.
I'ma talk to him about it.
Yeah.
Maybe you guys could make a
band, like a karaoke cover band.
You don't think that there's
ever anything he can do?
Only if Roscoe's in it.
What's Roscoe gonna do besides-
He can play an instrument.
Drums- Yeah ⦠maybe.
Yeah.
Okay.
We'll see.
We'll try that.
Maybe I'll like him better if we do it.
Yeah.
I, I encourage you to do it.
Try to find some common
ground with Smarty.
Can I ask you a question?
Sure.
All I've been thinking about
is that s'mores Blizzard.
Can we go get one?
Yeah.
Hey.
My treat.
I was gonna say, I don't have any money.
Well, see?
I'm taking care of you.
Don't worry about it.
Yay.
Let's go.
All right.
So join us next time.
Yeah.
Maybe another parable.
We'll have another parable,
maybe with S- maybe with Smarty.
Maybe with Smarty.
All right.
All right, Dewey.
Adios.
Bye.
