The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Tonight we show solidarity with the people of Ukraine, needlessly under attack by Russian forces. We try to do what little we can here on the air, but the main point is to donate and do your bit to help the flood of refugees and the fight back.

Show Notes

As broadcast on March 9, 2022 with zero room for authoritarianism and it's accompanying lies and war.  Tonight we show solidarity in what little way we can here on the air far away by highlighting the amazing musicians and artists of Ukraine.  Attacked several weeks ago by Russia, we can only show our incredible admiration for the resistance ongoing that will continue, and also those who have spoken out against this atrocious and needless violence in Russia and Belorus, two of whom we highlight on the show tonight.  If you feel helpless you are not.  Donate what you can to help alleviate some of the suffering by donating to the Ukrainian Red Cross or another humanitarian organization in good stead.  Every cent will help save lives.

I.
It is 20 hours past midnight, flight TD 065 is getting its final mechanical touch-ups for tonight before we fly off into the wild blue yonder, and we hope you are ready to take a trip and also do your bit to help out tonight. We take off tonight for a country that is in a desperate situation of unprovoked invasion tonight, and of course that would be Ukraine. The breadbasket of Europe is currently on fire after Russian troops invaded several weeks ago, and we are going to do what little we can and send support to our brothers and sisters struggling very hard to fight off the aggressors in their homeland. Now, first off, we must say that we know one’s government does not equate with its people, and we’ll be pointing that out with some music acts that have spoken out against this horror show in both Belarus and Russia tonight during the process of our first hour as well. If you feel powerless you indeed are not, as you can donate to the Ukrainian Red Cross and other great organizations trying to help the refugees and other desperate people just pouring out of Ukraine right now, and we’ll be sure to do our bit and point you to a couple on our socials later on. For right now though, we’re here to say we’re not going to take it on the show tonight. That is, phony wars on false pretexts, imperialism generally, autocracy, dictatorship, and all the other miseries that this entire struggle symbolizes, at least from the wrong side of history. This is The Drop and all power to the Ukrainian people tonight.
Twisted Sister – We’re Not Gonna Take It
The Drop has boarded the bus tonight so we are on our way to Incheon for this week’s Round Trip. What’s happening tonight, Drop Gangsters (Korean)? Danno on the mic here in studio 2, GFN HQ, downtown Gwangju and Lizz Kalo joins us for her penultimate appearance on the show this evening as we try to show some solidarity with the Ukrainian people tonight as they continue to fight for their independence while under invasion from Russian forces.
That was Twisted Sister with We’re Not Gonna Take It, which is always an anthem of defiance but notably has been made one in this specific struggle by protestors around the world and fighters within Ukraine. As we did during the intro, we would encourage you to donate to the Ukrainian Red Cross and other organizations delivering badly needed humanitarian aid to the country’s people, as already 1.7 million people as of yesterday had poured out of Ukraine and into countries mostly West of there. Give what you can, it’s very dire.
Now, as to Dee Snider’s classic from 1984 that we just opened with, the leading man from Twisted Sister had a few choice words on this song being made an anthem of the Ukrainian struggle. Pointing out that use of the song isn’t something he blesses for any old movement, Snider did note on social media that using it for Ukraine has his full endorsement. He noted further that the Ukrainians were fighting "a righteous battle against oppression" while saying that the anti-maskers using it were more like "infantile feet stomping against an inconvenience."
Truer words, fair listener.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
Next block, we’ll continue in the rock vein for tonight both old and new from Ukraine. Up next we have Tartak to be followed by Lost Message and The Hardkiss, all of which we shall enunciate after they do not equivocate, but for now This is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday night to Kiev.
_________

The Drop is back tonight as we are just about to pull up to the terminal at ICN this evening. Off to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv for our weekly Round Trip on flight TD065 with Lizz Kalo at the top of the hour. For those just joining us, we would encourage you to donate to the Ukrainian Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations to do your bit to help the people there and the dire refugee situation. As to what we just heard, let’s get to the details on that trio of Ukrainian rockers…
Tartak – I AM NO LONGER (…for those unfamiliar the band’s moniker is type of common woodsaw. The band thought that this tool represented something energetic and loud, thus appealing to them for a band name. The sextet originally hails from Lutsk, a town near the Polish and Belurussian borders in northwest Ukraine.)
Lost Message – Leti (…much like the predecessor on the playlist, this band is a rock and rapcore group that originally hails from Sumi. They’re still mainly a local phenomenon as far as the people that know about them and their music, and we of course hope everything is okay with the group and their loved ones tonight.)
The Hardkiss - Zhiva (…this is a tune whose title means alive, and appropriately enough given the current horror show that is underway in Ukraine. This band is a quartet that has really made a name for themselves since their 2016 runner-up finish in the national finals for the Eurovision Song Contest, and we’ll hear from the winner of that one in part 3 tonight.)
Alright, so we’re just about to pull up to the terminal for check-in, and we have a couple selections in the more Soviet wave and dark synthwave movements that are going on all over the former USSR. Up next is Ukrainian group The Glass Beads with City of Anger, and then we’ll head into Belarus with Molchat Doma and a tune called Toska. Even though the Belarussian government is staging troops there and cracking down on dissent, the band spoke out forcefully against the invasion right when it happened, so big up to Molchat Doma showing solidarity. THIS is The Drop, power to the people against war anywhere, power to Ukraine.
The Glass Beads – City of Anger
Molchat Doma – Toska

II.
The Drop is back after the first jump of the evening on our Round Trip to Ukraine Wednesday night. For those just joining us, we’re showing solidarity to those suffering and in the fight against autocratic oppression wherever you may be tonight, but especially to those under the weight of it in Ukraine. Please do what you can and donate, it is a desperate situation and we might add totally and completely unnecessary and counterproductive to whatever Vlad Putin thought he was doing there. To the recap for now, that was…
Dzhn Bilks feat D Kay Drummasta, Kodak, and Mark Evich – Up to You (…we have to note that the featuring vocalist here is a great friend of the show and although originally from Russia much like his Belarus counterparts Molchat Doma has spoken out forcefully against dictatorship and this war on multiple occasions since the invasion started. Although based in LA now, I’m sure his heart just aches to no end watching this unfold, so big up to Mark Evich and standing up for what’s right.)
Vagonovzhatye - ?it (…I have no idea what this song is actually called, there’s like a couple symbols and wingdings in there. I do know that this is off a 2016 album called Startup Youth, and the band’s name means Wagons. The band was formed in 2013.)
Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
Next block we’ll continue to stand with Ukraine as we go to security in order to get on the flight tonight. Up next is One In a Canoe to be followed by ONUKA and a band called Adm:t, and we’ll talk about all three after things go up and come down, but for now THIS is The Drop solidarity with Ukraine Wednesday night Round Trip.
_________
The Drop has arrived at the gate here at ICN, ready to fly for Kiev on our Round Trip for this week. Showing our appreciation and solidarity with the Ukrainian people and the democratically elected representatives there currently under attack by Russian forces under Vladimir Putin, and Lizz Kalo joins us on the flight to Ukraine shortly, but for now, let’s explain our musical sensibilities in that last block...
Odyn v Kanoe – I Have No Home (…now, we cannot stress enough how dire the situation is in Ukraine with each passing day of this conflict. Almost two million people are literally saying this as they flee the violence for other countries in Europe, so give what you can to the Ukrainian Red Cross or other verified humanitarian organizations.)
ONUKA – ZENIT (…an amazing best-selling duo out of Ukraine which we’ll hear more from in hour 2 this evening while in Kiev with Lizz Kalo tonight. All we gotta say for now is both members that founded this band are incredible musicians, and the proof is always in the pudding on their elegant tunes.)
adm:t – BUL. FUZHIKA (…a band I can’t find a lot of info on, this one means Fuzhika Steet or Boulevard, released in 2021 as a standalone single by the Kyiv-based quartet.)
Moving towards we’re going to bump up the bpm’s and get a little funkier to finish. Up next is LATEXFAUNA with a cut called Bounty, and we’ll finish with Blooms Corda and a tune called Mozhe or May, and THIS is The Drop boarding flight TD064 for Kyiv hoping that the flowers bloom soon at our destination forever.
LATEXFAUNA – Bounty
Blooms Corda – Mozhe

Brother’s Ivan - National Anthem of Ukraine
• Had to start with some respect for Ukraine tonight, that was an acoustic version of the national anthem.
• Brother’s Ivan is a male-female folk duo from Ukraine featured on vol 6 of Ukrainian Folk Music: Faith & Glory, which came out last year.
Jamala - 1944
• The singer Jamala whose real name is Susana Jamaladinova topped Ukrainian charts after participating in the international song contest New Wave in Jūrmala, Latvia in 2009.
• She has always been on the stage, taking part in numerous music festivals and competitions, or giving concerts and experimenting with music and sound.
• She rose to fame and gained world recognition, after becoming a winner of Eurovision 2016 with this song called 1944.
Brunettes Shoot Blonde - Bittersweet
• Brunettes Shoot Blondes is one of the most stylish, solid and high-quality indie bands in Ukraine.
• They first became known in other countries in Europe, before the Ukraine, With the song Knock Knock which gained nine million views on YouTube and became finalists of the Berlin Music Video Awards
• They released this song from their first album also called Bittersweet and, created in partnership with the German automobile company Opel.
Sunsay - Doletim (Let’s Fly)
• Interesting funk & reggae project here founded in 2007 by Andriy Zaporozhets, a Ukrainian singer-songwriter and front man of the "5'nizza" group.
• The group sings in Russian, English, and Ukrainian, and has since become a group known on their own rather than just the previous band’s offshoot.
DakhaBrakha - Sho z-pod duba
• DakhaBrakha has long been well-known to folk motives, who play in their own genre of music called ethno-chaos.
• The band consists of four ladies, who perform Ukrainian folk songs in an authentic manner, using a wide range of instruments from different parts of the world.
• This composition Sho z-pod duba became the soundtrack to the third season of the Fargo series, produced by the legendary Coen brothers.
Dima Bondarev Quintet - Golden Mean
• The band leader was born in the Ukraine SSR back in 1984, learning trumpet from the age of 9.
• Later on he was awarded a scholarship to study music in Poland, and from there moved on to Berlin.
• The band has performed at festivals all around Europe, winning multiple nominations and prizes for both their performances and albums.

Vremya i Steklo - Imya 505
• These musicians are incredibly popular in Ukraine and other former Soviet countries. They have over 180 million views of their video on YouTube.
• They represent themselves with unique outfits, up-to-date beats and easily memorable text of songs and theirlead singer is also a spokesperson for Maybelline cosmetics.
Jamala - Kryla (Wings)
• Now, we’ve discussed the famed Jamala during part 3, and this tune which means Wings was the title track to her 2018 album. I would suspect that by this time she was now officially a huge deal having won Eurovision.
Panivalkova - Let Me
• Panivalkova is an indie-pop trio that offers a really high-quality sound, unconventional arrangements and, of course, ethnic costumes.
• The band was formed by Ira Luzina, Irina Kulshenko and Daria Pugachova
• They sing in four languages, namely: English, Spanish, Ukrainian and Russian, and play a whole variety of musical instruments.
ONUKA - Time
• This is a duo with some serious chops, having been founded by the acclaimed Eugene Filatov and Nata Zhyzhchenko.
• Interestingly, they were invited as special guest performers at 2017’s Eurovision contest in the capital of Kyiv, causing a massive stir with their performance. Just days later their VIDLIK EP came out and later hit #1 on the UK charts and a number of other European countries.
Crucial Star - Work To Do
• Park Se-yoon, more commonly known as Crucial Star, is a South Korean rapper and record producer.
• He started writing music at the age of 17 and joined the hip hop duo Libra Twins in 2007, before debuting as a solo rapper in 2010. He released his first EP, A Star Goes Up, in 2011.
Kumira feat Loomboy & D2ear - Love & hate
• The main singer has been a busy guy since his debut in 2018, with a number of collabs and features on others’ works, along with EP’s and a full-length album debut in 2020 called Days.
• This tune dropped on another EP he released that same year called When We Hurt, which definitely fits with the feel of this tune we’re going to close the show with.
