FOOD LOG

May 18 - 31, 2026: Berger cookies, zoodles, private equity babka

What is FOOD LOG?

What I ate last week. Ranked #182 in food podcasts in Mexico according to an email I just got.

EPISODE 65

NEWS & UPDATES
Covered in a rash. No scents (except magnolia flower) or Top Chef because I have 2 weeks of food to recap.

The Valley: britney has a crab boil the night before a big surgery (?)
Great news, the surgery was successful; we got all of the crab out of you

May 18, 2026 (Monday)

8am: Counter Culture coffee with half & half, made at home.

1pm: Utz Extra Dark Sourdough Pretzels with Cedar’s garlic hummus.

4pm: A slice of white American cheese.

6pm: Lasagna, made at home.

7:30pm: Blue Bell cookies and cream ice cream.

Pretzels and hummus makes the hummus taste amazing
Stop & Shop used to give kids a slice of cheese when you’d be in the cart with your mom at the store. That’s what a fat slice of Land o’ Lakes American cheese tastes like to me.
Big lasagna while watching RHORI
Red sauce: ground beef, meatball mix, onion, garlic, tomato paste, chiltepin peppers, Gustiamo oregano, Mutti tomatoes, tomato puree, chicken stock, fresh basil
Bechamel: 4TB butter, 4TB flour, tons of black pepper, 3-4c milk, salt, american cheese, nutmeg
Big bag of cheese, parm
Overall good. Probably did 7 layers. I undersalted last time so this time I was a little heavy handed and it ended up having an Olive Garden level of salt. Tasted like Olive Garden lasagna
GoodPops: every summer I buy the electrolyte pops for Brian since he works outside all day and every summer they taste different to me. They taste amazing this year – peach lemonade is so lemony, in a true way. Not too sweet. However the popsicles themselves are about half the size they were last year. Other flavors are berry lemonade and tropical lemonade.

8am: Counter Culture coffee with half & half, made at home.

10am: Utz Extra Dark Sourdough Pretzels with Cedar’s garlic hummus.

2pm: A bologna burger with ketchup and mustard and two deviled eggs at Studley General Store in Studley, Virginia.

6pm: An Eichbaum pilsner draft and a small pretzel with cheese sauce and mustard at Prost DC.

7:30pm: A half pour of 2023 XXVI Talhas, Antão Vaz/Roupero/Dona Branca, ‘Branco do Tareco’, a half pour of 2021 Argyle, Chardonnay, Blanc de Blancs, Brut, Willamette Valley, a half pour of 2024 Susana Esteban, Aragonês/Touriga Nacional, ‘Aventura’, and a small pour of NV Tapiz, Malbec, Extra Brut.

Welcome to tidewater architecture country. Best architecture of the south IMO. Virginia smells like tree of heaven which smells like the dry peanut Mexican candy
Dr Pepper and Diet Coke mix tastes like watermelon

As soon as I heard the microwave I said fuck. Lot of local meat though. Big ass steaks. Gotta come back with a cooler. Got some pork meat sticks for my sister who loves meat sticks. Uncured sweet meat pork stick. Only got charged for one.

The Santal 33 is flowing in DC. Downtown DC smells like boys doused in Santal 33 blasting by you on a lime scooter creating a wind tunnel of santal 33. It’s like a drive-by shooting.
If your boyfriend was at Prost DC on Tuesday May 19 at 6pm he described you as a habanero pepper to his friends. Big group of guys behind me and they are rating how spicy their girlfriends are based on peppers. “Not a ghost pepper but not a bell pepper. Maybe a habanero”
Tried walking to Bar Americano, which seems like the kind of place that people with kids who are visiting museums end up eating at, to meet up with people but walked in the wrong direction and ended up at a German beer garden which is really what I wanted in the 98 degrees concrete heat. Cold beer. And salad? Got a pretzel. I was on the phone with Brian and he already called out my exact order which is sad.
Gelato place with a single employee sitting in the dark; looked abandoned
Cher Cher Ethiopian looked good in an old white brick building with people streaming in and out; cake at unconventional diner; San Lorenzo was Brian’s pic. They did have tiramisu. He said I needed to eat real good but it was so hot.
Maxwell wine bar: surrounded by people on dates from Hell; there is a Crunchwrap supreme on the menu; complimentary pour of sparking rose with a woman who was scammed by a matchmaking service; she paid $10,000 for three matches and specifically requested that she not be matched with Hindu or other religious men who do not drink alcohol and was immediately matched with a Hindu man who did not drink and they met up at that same wine bar yet another date from hell she said that he had very strong body odor and talk down to her the whole time she would not stop touching me. I asked her if she had watched the bravo show millionaire matchmaker and she did not know what I was talking about.
7-eleven did not have the Fresca slush
I told the Bartender that I was with a Brett yeast I also liked Tanic dry wine three one sparkling one orange one red. I was really impressed with the recommendations of the orange. It taste a little bit like tin fish. The red was tanning at first a little spicy. The sparkling was fantastic but over the course that I that he was recommending same exact wines to everybody so was he just trying to get rid of those bottles or what?

May 20, 2026 (Wednesday)

8:30am: A coffee with half & half from Warka coffee in Washington, DC.

9:30am: Coffee with half & half, half of a za’atar everything bagel with lox, tomatoes, and roasted vegetable cream cheese from Call Your Mother in Washington, DC.

12:30pm: A crunchy boi from Compliments Only in Washington, DC.

6:30pm: A Dekopan Daisy highball, sushi, baked crab hand rolls, a steamed pork dumpling, popcorn cauliflower, tuna crispy rice, part of a chicken slider, and a mini pink frosted heart shaped donut at Love, Makoto in Washington DC.

Warka coffee; I was going to get a large cold brew but then I watched the person working there drop the ice scoop on the floor, rinse it with water and put it back so I got hot coffee on a 98 degree day.
Call your mother is ok - rapidly expanding
Bagels were fine – more like bread than bagel; cream cheese was very good, lox was great. “Hybrid montreal-NY style bagel” – idk. Maybe when they were selling at farmers’ markets that was true. At this point they really feel like chain bagels.
Coming to Chicago; PRIVATE EQUITY https://www.instagram.com/p/DYhhVP1lStL/?igsh=cWlnaHFlZGdva3J2
The Call Your Mother branding is very strong, very Miami. The person in DC who picked out all of the breakfast / lunch / dinner spots, based on her choices, I thought, I bet she likes Ilana Kohn. She showed up in a full Ilana Kohn outfit to the workshop.
Woke up thinking about how I connect so easily with girls who have sisters; walked over to a workshop and reconnected with someone who I’ve always really gotten along with and we both realized that we are the oldest of three girls. TWhen I really flawlessly and naturally get along with someone I usually find out that they have at least one sister. All my closest friends growing up also had 2 sisters.
Guys DC is actually beautiful despite everything happening in DC? Lovely to wake up in a city.
Compliments Only
“Chef inspired subs” that basically taste like bodega sandwiches if we are being honest. Cheap ass grocery store bread. Anthony Bourdain worshipers.
Crunchy boi was a soggy boi with the pickle, but overall great with pockets of aioli and ruffled Utz chips. Aioli was fantastic.
Someone ordered Berger cookies but only 2 for themselves from Compliments Only, the cookie I was talking about. I need to get some before I leave at Giants.
Walked around in a wind storm looking for Berger cookies which are available at select Giant locations.
Love, Makoto is fine and is confusingly like 4 restaurants in one
Dekopon Daisy: joven tequila, ume plum, yuzu.
Almost got Hidden Jaguar: blanco tequila, maraschino, cinnamon, kabosu, sesame chili.

May 21, 2026 (Thursday)

9am: Coffee with half & half, strawberries, pineapple, and blueberries, and a frosted babka from Call Your Mother in Washington, DC.

2pm: Bean and cheese pupusas with jalapeno crema and slaw from La Casita Pupusas in Washington, DC.

9pm: A pour of Talea Al Dente and chicken Milanese with wild greens, cornichon vinaigrette, and shaved Parmesan stravecchio at Middle Child Club House in Philadelphia, PA.

Incredible babka. CYM forgot to include our cream cheese / schmears
LC was almost 3 hours late; three people on bikes came to deliver the food. They probably shouldn’t accept orders so big. Also got a chicken tamale but it wasn’t great so I didn’t really eat it.
Riversuites Hotel at the Battery. Has a basketball court. Who cares. I like being on a waterfront. More dark and quiet. Can’t sleep in hotels.
There are like 40 places I want to eat at in Philly. For solo eating I thought Fiorella might be good for a small pasta plate with bar seating but didn’t want to risk needing a reservation. Also thought fishtown would be more chill.
Talea al dente was nice and crispy. I wanted a lot of things on this menu. 2 different Caesar salads options, one with kombu dressing.
Chicken was covered in pickled peppers. Wild greens were really just mixed greens. Lemon cheek. Ton of cheese. Two giant cutlets that wilt the greens. Doing my cutlet research before I cook some for my mom. It’s good. This place is trendy. Felt like a smiths song was on repeat the whole time. Or wooden shjips.
Chill vs fawning bartender loudly flirting with every male employee telling her about how they were in a parody of grease called lard. Omg really?? Stop that is so cool. You’re so cool.

May 22, 2026 (Friday)

9am: Coffee with half & half and Fishtown scrapple plate with hash browns at Sulimay’s in Philadelphia, PA.

4pm: Half of a raspberry lemon pastel de nata and half of a cinnamon pastel de nata from Gilda’s in Philadelphia, and half of a Berger cookie.

6pm: Buffalo chicken pizza and sausage and onion pizza from Vito’s Restaurant and Pizzeria in Wethersfield, Connecticut.

Sat at the turquoise seat at the bar (the seats were rainbow) and was automatically given a pot of coffee. Feels intentionally old school service wise to match the decore. This is what pies n thighs was going for when they trained us — they wanted us to be short and snappy as servers like an old school diner server, but it didn’t really work. These girls were good at it but also seemed overworked. Had real Philly accents.
Eggs Bensington: scrapple, cooper sharp & dippy eggs, over white toast.
Fishtown scrapple: spicy whitefish scrapple, heirloom tomato, sunny side up eggs, pickled long hots and comeback sauce
Good cold brew and beautiful egg custards. Perfectly set with crispy crackly pastry shell and great lamination.
Fishtown is interesting because it has small, weird businesses and independent restaurants; affordable rent and proximity to big cultural hubs; not overrun by private equity. But does it flood?

May 23, 2026 (Saturday)

10am: RaonJena coffee with half & half and half of a toasted bagel from Seed kitchen & bagelry with vegetable cream cheese, made at home in Connecticut.

1pm: A leftover slice of buffalo chicken pizza, sausage pizza, and a handful of Tostitos Hint of Lime chips.

6pm: Gluten free chicken katsu and onion rings with ranch and ketchup, made at home in Connecticut, and smashed cucumbers, made by Anna.

7pm: Half of a chocolate pastel de nata from Gilda.

Glastonbury Bachan Japanese bbq sauce was 8.99 down to 6.29.
https://www.seriouseats.com/foolproof-onion-rings-food-lab-recipe
Woodman’s of Essex gluten free onion rings; evaporated milk and corn flour, fried in lard
Gluten free 4C panko and seasoned breadcrumbs combined; my sister said they were the crispiest chicken cutlets she’d ever had. Hard to tell when done because they don’t brown in the same tone as wheat crumbs. Great flavor. Used eggs, mayonnaise, grey poupon, water for wet.
I think leave eggs out?? They can get gummy and dense

May 24, 2026 (Sunday)

10am: RaonJena coffee with half & half and a toasted sesame bagel from Seed kitchen & bagelry with vegetable cream cheese, made at home in Connecticut.

2pm: Rainer cherries.

4pm: A handful of Tostitos Hint of Lime tortilla chips.

6pm: Oven ribs and gluten free macaroni and cheese, made by my dad, and coleslaw, made at home in Connecticut.

7pm: A mini Dietsch’s chocolate pretzel and half of a Berger cookie.

Natalie’s guava lemonade: not very tart or acidic. Kind of murky. Not very refreshing. Tastes natural. Idk if guava is my favorite flavor
https://www.davidlebovitz.com/worlds-best-mac-cheese-macaroni-recipe/
Coleslaw using Kenji’s sugar and salt cure method. Hellman’s olive oil mayonnaise, rice wine vinegar, sugar, salt, garlic powder, dried parsley. Should have rinsed once more but my sisters said it tasted store bought which they said was a good thing.

May 25, 2026 (Monday)

7am: RaonJena coffee with half & half, made at home in Connecticut.

10am: A sausage, egg, and cheese McMuffin and hash brown from a McDonald’s in rural New York.

3pm: A bean burrito and a spicy potato soft taco from a Taco Bell in Tyson’s Corner, Virginia, and a handful of gummy worms from Sheetz.

8pm: Mixed olives from Whole Foods, Martin’s jalapeno chips, and half a can of Bitberger Radler.

Saw a Wyoming plate 3 minutes into the drive back. Man tried to sell me his truck.
Drove 81 and 83 south through Scranton, Shamokin. Grabbed Martin’s chips. Pennsylvania is so beautiful. So many little candy shops and local butcher places.
Martin’s chips melt in your mouth because of the shortening but these tasted like old bay seasoning
Mary and me messaging each other on Tiktok asking if we can hear each others’ tiktok videos from the other room. Ritz bits sandwich and Swiss Miss pudding cup girl. She had a large basement so we would have sleepovers over there and one time in the dark basement. She went into a room that was all glass and turned on the light inside of it and screamed. can you see this?

May 26, 2026 (Tuesday)

9am: RaonJena coffee with half & half, made at home.

12pm: An olive oil toasted slice of La Farm sourdough with butter and crunchy peanut butter, made at home.

2pm: Utz extra dark sourdough pretzels.

4:30pm: Two corn dogs, cheese curds, half of a chocolate malt milkshake, and a Cajun chicken wrap from Cook Out in Oxford, North Carolina.

7:30pm: A pour of Hakutsuru Sayuri Nigori.

https://takasan.co/products/hakutsuru-sayuri-nigori
Tastes like melon
Made a poolish for Radio Bakery inspired sourdough: 50g Meadowlark bread flour, 50g water, pinch of yeast.

May 27, 2026 (Wednesday)

8:30am: Counter Culture coffee with half & half, made at home.

11am: Croccantini crackers and Utz extra dark sourdough pretzels with Boursin, Boxcarr Doeling cheese, Genoa salami, and cherries.

6pm: Green chili paneer, Hydrebadi Style Chicken 65, gongura dal tadka, butter masala chicken, and garlic naan at Naga’s South Indian Cuisine in Durham, North Carolina.

7:30pm: Martin’s jalapeño potato chips.

Red cherries are so much better.
Doeling cheese kind of blows. Chive studded bloomy rind goat cheese that you would think would be nice and soft but is just kind of solid and not very fatty/creamy.
Naga’s (next to Town of Fun); recommended to us by someone from New Delhi
Green chili paneer: fried indian cottage cheese cooked in basil paste with onions, bell peppers, spices, chilies, and herbs. Why was this red?
Fried baby corn
Hydrebadi Style Chicken 65: well marinated boneless chicken with Indian spices and sauteed with chef made 65 sauce. They also have a Chennai style chicken 65. Great lime flavor.
Gongura dal tadka: Andhra-style dal featuring protein-rich lentils tempered with zesty gongura
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gongura
Butter masala chicken: sauteed in butter and freshly roasted cashew and spice paste. Very cinnamon / garam masala forward. Lovely.
Garlic naan: delightful
Small bowl of red onions that were sliced so strangely I wondered if they even used a knife. Included lime wedges, sliced perfectly. So that was confusing.

May 28, 2026 (Thursday)

9am: Counter Culture coffee with half & half, made at home.

11:30am: Spicy chicken tenders from Food Lion with ketchup, a slice of toasted La Farm sourdough with Danish butter, made at home, and cherries.

3pm: Mixed olives, Genoa salami, a handful of stale Smartfood popcorn, and two Nerds strawberry punch flavored juicy gummy clusters.

6pm: Detroit style pepperoni pizza and arugula with parmesan, black pepper, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar, made at home, and a small pour of Bitberger radler.

7pm: A Berger cookie.

I’ve never had any of these new Nerds candies, including the rope. Not bad.
Pizza: next time I would cut the recipe in half or divide. Would like to retry the recipe without a wet topping; cooked for 7 minutes at 525 without toppings and it was looking great. Finished for another 12 minutes with toppings and it browned nicely, very soft. Too much moisture but fully done. Maybe the overproofed poolish contributed to a slightly overproofed flavor.
Radio Bakery inspired Sourdough focaccia (for 8"x10" pan)
https://justinesnacks.com/radio-bakery-sourdough-focaccia/
OG recipe; she mixes this with a mixer for like 25 minutes and has incredible structure. I think it does need this, based on my experience making focaccia in a bakery with a high lift.
Pastry Club https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8pcGR3j/
250g king arthur bread flour
200g water
80g active sourdough (sub 100g poolish made from 50g bread flour, 50g water and tiny pinch of yeast)
5g salt
5g sugar
25g water
Olive oil for greasing pan
ADDED 1g yeast
Mix focaccia: in a large bowl, combine bread flour with 200g water by hand until no dry spots. Cover and rest for 30 mins. Add sourdough, salt, sugar, and 25g water, mix until everything is combined, dough will be very wet and sticky. Cover and rest for 30 mins. Perform a set of stretch & folds.
Repeat 30 min rest and stretch & fold 2-3 times or until dough can stretch without breaking, then move on to slap & folds (using both hands, one on each side, slide under the middle section of dough, lift up high and slap down onto the counter, folding over itself, repeat 5 times). Perform at least 3 slap & folds every 30 mins or until dough is stretchy and strong. Cover and refrigerate overnight. The next day, generously oil your pan with olive oil (~¼ cup), place dough inside oiled pan. Shape the dough by starting at the top, taking a little section on one side of dough, pulling it towards the middle, pulling a section from the opposite side on top of it.
Repeat down the length of the dough, then roll the dough up tightly from the bottom to form a tight loaf (similar to how you would shape a sourdough boule). Flip it seam side down, cover and let it rise until the dough fills the entire pan (2-4hrs) and is airy and jiggly.
Bake: preheat oven to 450F. Stretch the dough to fill the corners of the pan if needed. Spread breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top of the dough. Break up anchovy filets into small pieces and evenly place all over. Drizzle a little more olive oil over the top. Use tingers to dimple the dough evenly throughout. Bake for 18-20 mins or until brown.

May 29, 2026 (Friday)

9am: Counter Culture coffee with half & half, made at home.

10am: Leftover Indian food.

1pm: Utz extra dark sourdough pretzels.

4:30pm: A 5 ounce pour of North Coast Brewing Company Scrimshaw pilsner and a 5 ounce pour of Connecticut Valley Brewing Company Mackinaw Peach at Raleigh Beer Garden in Raleigh, North Carolina.

5:30pm: A strawberry, raspberry, and Thai chili margarita, a zucchini noodle salad, tostones with pimento cheese, fried mashed potatoes, a smash burger, and a slice of chocolate cake at Lagana in Raleigh, North Carolina.

8pm: Haribo sour soda gummies and a Nerds very berry gummy cluster.

Raleigh Beer Hall
Went upstairs to the “international” bar and asked if they had German lagers and they said no. They have over 386 beers on tap.
Scrimshaw was nice and dry
Mackinaw was sour in an off way
https://untappd.com/b/connecticut-valley-brewing-company-mackinaw-peach/3215900
They have a double beer battered pretzel
Lagana was also a recommendation
Margarita was muddy; needed lime
BOKOBOKO: Seasonal Ingredients, Baller SEXI Combination
This “salad” in quotations was spicy zoodles with microgreens and cashews; more of a zucchini sesame noodle dish than a salad; needed acid for salad classification
Textbook: WAGYU, LTO, El Sauce, YANKEE CHEDDAR
Good; lacy thin edges; QueenBurger was a better trendy smash burger overall; thinking back to Oklahoma onion smash burger experience
Miss Piggy: Baconator on steroids
Mr. Thick: Big Ass French Fry
Great; more microgreens and fluffy parm
Like fried mashed potatoes
Tostones: Pimento Cheese, Cheese Foam, Chilli oil
Brian thought the pimento cheese were shredded carrots
Just ok
Chocolate cake was basically box cake and premade frosting. Tasted like portillo’s chocolate cake. Slightly dry. Was told to skip.
Haribo sour sodas were good but I really just want fizzy cola if I’m going to expose my teeth to direct sugar

May 30, 2026 (Saturday)

9am: Counter Culture coffee with half & half, made at home.

11am: Leftover pizza.

1pm: A key lime sorbet and graham cracker soft serve ice cream swirl in a cake cone at Broken Spoke in Hillsborough, North Carolina.

2pm: A cold brew with half & half from Cup-A-Joe in Hillsborough.

3pm: A pour of 2024 Grenache Blanc Lambic Sour, fried pickled banana peppers with smoked onion ranch, garlic fries with pink sauce, shrimp with clarified butter, and a wedge salad at the Wooden Nickel in Hillsborough.

7pm: Haribo sour soda gummies.

We visited the vulture house which was covered in excrement. We immediately saw a buzzard hobbling around on the ground.
Ms Pat said there are a ton of buzzards in the town over. About 200 of them sitting on a water tower. We need vultures but we don’t need 200 of them.
Wooden Nickel
Asked for share plates, but we never got them so we took turns eating part of the iceberg salad in different leftover container containers, including a fry basket. I like the wooden nickel, but this was not the experience.
Beer: 7% made with wine grapes from the south coast of France, the fresh fruit hits first before layers of lemony funk and bits of bright apple kick it; super drinkable. It was fine.

May 31, 2026 (Sunday)

8am: Counter Culture coffee with half & half, made at home.

10am: Utz extra dark sourdough pretzels.

12pm: Half a can of Lagunitas IPA.

3pm: Cape Cod potato chips, a Bubba burger with lettuce, tomato, white American cheese, ketchup, mayonnaise, sautéed mushrooms, and caramelized onions on a toasted sesame seed bun, baked beans, potato salad, yellow cake with chocolate frosting and sprinkles, vanilla ice cream with hot fudge and a cherry, and two glasses of Josh Seasweet wine at Brian’s parents’ house.

I collected the sour green apples on the trees outside because the squirrels are starting to eat them and it’s only a matter of time before they’re all gone. They are still very Tannic and not great for eating but sweet enough to harvest and use for vinegar. I started an apple cider vinegar in a gallon jar. I cut the apples into halves and quarters. They fit perfectly in the jar all the way up to the top I filled with a little over a quart of water and a little over 4 tablespoons of sugar, I covered it with a paper towel and elastic band and it is in my pantry. I will strain it either next Sunday or the Sunday after and then let it turn into vinegar. I didn’t wash them or anything to try and retain some of the natural yeast on the skin.
“What was up with that 3000 calorie dessert?” Love yellow cake with chocolate frosting or just chocolate cake as they apparently refer to it in parts of Virginia; it tasted so buttery and tender. But the sprinkles were insane. Brian’s dad asked if the sprinkles were supposed to be on there or not and why they were going to break our teeth. It’s those fake pearl sphere sprinkles that are rock hard. Why do they make them?
Josh Seabreeze is a blend of two different white wines is whatever
Bubba burgers are not good. They definitely need to be salted and they’re not fatty whatsoever. It feels like a diet burger. Roscoe had one and a half hamburgers.
The baked beans, potato salad were great.
Brians mom gave me some Benadryl for my rash
