Lighter Than You Started is a daily podcast offering gentle reflections on the news, the noise, and the small human moments that shape our days. With wry humour and quiet honesty, it’s not about fixing you, just about ending each day feeling a little lighter than when it began.
Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Lighter Than You Started. It's Tuesday and today I'd like to talk about something that many of us do without even noticing. We try to solve emotions that haven't arrived yet. Perhaps you've caught yourself thinking what if I feel overwhelmed? What if that meeting makes me anxious?
Keith:What if I don't cope very well? What if I regret my decision? It's interesting isn't it? Not only do we imagine future events we imagine future feelings and then we start trying to manage those feelings before they've even appeared. There's something very understandable about that.
Keith:None of us enjoys discomfort. If we believe we can prepare ourselves emotionally in advance perhaps the experience won't feel quite so difficult. So the mind keeps rehearsing, planning, predicting, Trying to build emotional defenses against moments that haven't yet happened. Sometimes that's useful. If you're preparing for an important presentation thinking ahead can help.
Keith:If you're planning for a challenging conversation a little reflection can make you feel calmer. But there comes a point where preparation quietly turns into carrying. Instead of preparing for tomorrow you're experiencing tomorrow emotionally today. You feel anxious about tomorrow's meeting while you're still eating today's lunch. You feel disappointed about an outcome that hasn't happened.
Keith:You feel exhausted by challenges that exist only in your imagination and all the while today waits patiently for your attention. Tuesday often finds us in that space. The week has begun. We
Intro:can see what's coming and because we can see
Keith:it our minds naturally start visiting it. But perhaps we don't have to stay there. Perhaps tomorrow's feelings belong to tomorrow. Think about how many times you've worried about something only to discover that when the moment actually arrived you handled it very differently from how you'd imagined. Sometimes it was easier.
Keith:Sometimes it was harder. But almost never exactly as your mind predicted. Because the person who experiences tomorrow will know things you don't know today. They'll have conversations you haven't yet had. They'll receive information you don't yet have.
Keith:They'll respond with resources that haven't yet been called upon. Today's version of you isn't expected to solve tomorrow's emotions. Today's version of you simply has today to live. You don't need to calm tomorrow's worries today. You don't need to prepare for emotions that may never arrive.
Keith:You don't need to spend this afternoon carrying tomorrow's uncertainty. Instead perhaps you can gently return to this moment this breath this conversation this ordinary Tuesday because while your mind is trying to protect you from tomorrow life is quietly happening today. So if you notice yourself trying to solve feelings that belong to the future perhaps gently thank your mind for wanting to keep you safe. Then quietly remind yourself Tomorrow's emotions can wait for tomorrow. Today's thought for you.
Keith:You don't need to solve tomorrow's feelings today. Thank you for sharing this moment and as always I hope you end today feeling lighter than you started. Draw gently and I'll see you tomorrow. On the flip side. Lighter Than You Started is a think of something publishing in production.
