The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

In part 1 of our two part series, we go over our favorite indie jams for 2022, with representation from all over the map picked by Danno and Kat Bass.  Due to budget cuts at GFN, our indie maven couldn't join us in studio for this one, but her indelible mark is indeed left.  Tunes from Lunar Isles (Korea/Scotland), TOPAZ (Chicago), Nature TV (Brighton), and so many more add the glimmer to an already killer lineup of shimmerers.

Part 1
Joe T. Johnson – Twist
Lunar Isles – Balloons
Stella feat Redinho – Titanic
Night Tapes – Humans
TOPAZ – Digging Your Scene
Bulgarian Cartrader – Camden Free Public Library
Julien Chang – Marmalade

Facts
Joe T. Johnson – Twist
- Big up Bristol. Joe T. Johnson as far as I’m concerned pretty much put a sound demon in my ear this year with that reverbing beauty.
- Released as a standalone in March, just a great tune and hoping to hear more from Johnson & company in the new year.
Lunar Isles – Balloons
- This is the indie moniker of David Skimming, who’s from Scotland but has been based in Cheongju, Korea for about 8 years now.
- This tune dropped as a standalone in July, inspired by a large balloon his girlfriend bought in Hongdae one day, and you can listen to his appearance on the show later that month on July 29 if you are so inclined. Also check out the Visitor EP from earlier this year called Visitor, or the two albums he dropped in 2021 called Mirror Shapes & Tides.
Stella feat Redinho – Titanic
- This is an artist based in Greece and Redinho was the producer of this album, called Up & Away, which was released in June.
- Decent record if you’d like to hear more, and do note Stella is spelled with a Greek sigma.
Night Tapes – Humans
- This is a trio based in London, and was a standalone single that dropped in June from the members Iiris, Max & Ritchie.
- Do check their other stuff if you dug that number, very good dreams to be found.
TOPAZ – Digging Your Scene
- Our main man in Chicago Zach Johnson released this back in April, a lovely standalone.
- Another artist we have to give props for joining us on the show earlier in the year, and do go stream some more if you dug that, we definitely recommend.
Bulgarian Cartrader – Camden Free Public Library
- One of our favorites of the year and once again props to Human Barbie for hipping us to this artist, who is in fact Bulgaria for a nice change of pace, and this was the title track to an EP dropped over the summer, and later featuring on the full-length album Motor Songs, which came out November 11.
Julien Chang – Marmalade
- The Sale, Nov 4, featured multiple times on the show.

Part 2
Fujii Kaze – Cause It’s Engless
Fulton Lee – Mona Lisa
Sunwoojunga - Burst It All
Ethel Cain - American Teenager
Sir Chloe - Company
Hotel Fiction – Monster
Hotel Fiction – Athens GA

Facts
Fujii Kaze – Cause It’s Endless 3.46
- Fujii Kaze is a Japanese singer songwriter who has gained even more attention since I first listened to him in the beginning of this year, and is still growing to be a great artist.
- Fujii Kaze started out as a cover artist at the age of 12, debuted their first album in 2020, and never looked back.
- This was part of the artist’s sophomore album that was released back in March.

Fulton Lee - Mona Lisa 2.42
- Fulton Lee combines stanky groove with colorful pop melodies to create a sound dubbed "Bubblegum Funk"
- Heavily inspired by the doo-wop sound and dance style of the 50's, much of his music and live performances are said to be a blast from the past.
- Mona Lisa is no different, but a more quiet cut from his original upbeat funk.

Sunwoojunga - Burst It All 3.38
- 선우정아 is a well known South Korean Musician and record producer who has worked with countless top artists in South Korea.
- Burst It All was 선우정아's first single of 2022; it's a song about expressing the entirety of what's inside you as an explosion. Showing yourself as fireworks.
- Listening to 선우정아 I always feel she has a different way to express feelings into some incredible sounds. A talent I appreciate very much.

Ethel Cain - American Teenager 4.18
- Ethel Cain is an American singer-songwriter and artist born in Tallahassee, Florida.
- She is a fresh artist in the scene, debuting this past May with the album, Preacher’s Daughter.
- Ethel said about the now multi million streamed song American Teenager, in a statement, "Growing up I was surrounded by visions of NASCAR, rock’n’roll, and being the one who would change everything… . I wrote this song as an expression of my frustration with all the things the ‘American Teenager’ is supposed to be but never had any real chance of becoming.”

Sir Chloe - Company 3.20
- An interesting artist, Sir Chloe learned to play the guitar by eating one of her fathers guitar picks then later began to write songs after repeatedly dreaming of choirs of dogs.
- Seems a bit off the normal start, but hey, what is normal nowadays? Sir Chloe definitely shows that anything can be, including their soft but hardy music. Company is a great example with its quiet, then escalated sound and oddly disturbing, but relatable lonely lyrics.

Hotel Fiction – Athens GA
Hotel Fiction - Monster 4.28
- Hotel Fiction is an Athens, Georgia-based band consisting of two best friends.
- The duo have been playing music for over ten years and began writing, performing, and playing together in January 2019. As of then releasing one debut Album in the fall of last year and one EP this past October.

Part 3
Djo - Change
Broken Bells - One Night
CASTLEBEAT – All The Time
Momma - Brave
paris jackson - lighthouse
Nature TV - Mike Fake
Nature TV – Loopholes

Facts
Djo - Change 3.04
- In between roles as a murderous rideshare driver and as a video game designer, Actor and Indie artist Joe Keery shared his sophomore album DECIDE back in September.
- In the album, he fights his way through the simulation of life with winking, off-kilter synth-pop.

Broken Bells - One Night 3.50
- Consisting of two major league artists, The Shins Frontman James Mercer and Danger Mouse' Brian Burton, the band Broken Bells came out of rest after 8 years with their newest album Into the Blue last October.
- The record sees them casting a wide net, presenting a palette that embraces sounds from across the last six decades of popular music.
- One Night is a definite woozy tune from the album to enjoy tonight.

CASTLEBEAT – All the Time
- Castlebeat (also known as Josh Hwang) is a Spanish Korean American dream pop artist hailing from Brooklyn, NY. He released four albums in the last few years, such as Castlebeat in 2016, VHS in 2018, Melodrama in 2020 and Half Life this past July.
- I believe he is a definite master of beats and mellow-vibes. Half Life is steadily reaching higher with more streams every second. If you like to chill, you can do so with Castlebeat.

Momma - Brave 3.57
- LA Based, but now Brooklyn residing indie rock band Momma released brand new album, Household Name, back in July.
- Sharing singles Speeding 72', Lucky, and Brave as teasers for the album, Momma has been heard all over the world.
- I can say they are a band only to be played but not to be played with. Stepping on serious topics and concepts, Household Name brought a new light to their sound.

paris jackson - lighthouse 3.06
- Paris-Michael Katherine Jackson, famously known as the legendary king of pop Micheal Jackson's only daughter, has found their own sound and has been making and releasing music since 2020.
- With my personal pick, lighthouse, Paris Jackson pays homage to Nirvana — and specifically the band’s “Sliver” video — with the visual for her grunge-inspired single. After releasing songs of sadness from a heartbreak, Lighthouse shows more of her anger.

Nature TV - Mike Fake 3.15
- Owning up to be door-to-door heartbreak salesmen, Nature TV has been a busy band this year.
- With their last EP released back in October, Nature TV's jangly guitars have been vibin all over the place. Gaining attention on social media, I believe the band is reaching to new levels they deserve.
- Mike Fake is a single released before EP, Night Shift was shared to the world. Interestingly enough, the cover art for it is of a night scene in Korea. Reason unknown, but a nice piece of work to see as well as to hear.

Part 4
whaledontsleep ft. haruno - caramel
Sunflower Bean – Roll The Dice
Glass Animals - Tangerine
Hauskey – Looking Out for Myself
COIN - Cutie
SURL - Walking in Dream
SURL – Around

Facts
whaledontsleep ft. haruno - caramel 3.17
- Debuting in 2019 Japanese artist whaledontsleep does all the songwriting, composition and arrangement by himself as he continuously releases his works to the world;
- Whaledontsleep has talent with his work and makes major collaborations as a new generation creator, gaining a lot of attention from the chill music scene.
- Caramel is a single I've shared with GFN back in June, and I never stopped listening to the jazzy yet Lofi banger since.

Sunflower Bean – Roll The Dice 3.20
- Sunflower Bean is an American rock band from Glen Head, New York founded in 2013.Their most recent album Head Full of Sugar was released in May of this year.
- Who Put You Up To This is the first track to start the album, and is a song expressing their need to be free, but not from a person, but to actually meet one. I don't resonate with the lyrics too much, but it's a neat tune.

Glass Animals - Tangerine 3.21
- Glass Animals are an English indie rock band formed in Oxford in 2010 who have reached a new level of high anticipation after 12 years of sharing their sound
- Glass Animals' major hit Heat Waves has shown that the band was capable of going international with their own twist. Tangerine is their second track from their Third Album, DREAMLAND.

Hauskey - Looking Out For Myself 2.04
- Hardworking, alpha Male, jackhammer Hauskey, also known as Australia based Andy Hopkins, makes distinctive, low-key indie pop that draws upon his love of jazz, R&B, and '70s soft rock. He debuted in 2020 with the Slow EP, which then he followed with a trio of interrelated EPs in 2022.
- His last three EPs detailed his journey in recovering his mental health, and Looking Out For Myself is a part of it. It's definitely a track we can all relate to.

COIN - Cutie 2.57
- Coin is an American pop rock band formed in 2012 in Nashville, Tennessee. As of this year the Trio has released their third album, Uncanny Valley, and immediately marched on their biggest tour to date.
- It is said Uncanny Valley is one their most experimental indie collections. As a summary, the band describes they've gone through emotional surgery and set out to explore the reaches of what it means to be human.

SURL - Walking in Dream 5.25
SURL - Around
- Releasing their debut album, of us, back in October, South Korean Indie rock band SURL 설 has been stuck in my mind.
- Walking in Dream is the 7th track of the album and expresses a daydream escape with a possible lover in mind. The lyrics are quite beautiful, almost like a poem. The music's sound itself really helps emphasize the emotions with its dreamy hue.
- A great song to end part 1 of my chaotic choices.
