Before console multiplayer became a menu option, XBAND made it a ritual: cartridge into modem, modem into console, console into phone jack, and suddenly the living room had another player hiding somewhere beyond the dial tone. Catapult’s strange little device turned Mortal Kombat, Madden, and other supported Genesis and Super Nintendo games into early online arenas, complete with usernames, rankings, messages, and the first hints of a console social network.
This episode follows XBAND at the moment its future was being handed off. In 1995, Catapult and Blockbuster tried to sell online console play through thousands of video rental stores, with demo tapes, four-foot displays, subscription plans, and worried parents staring at the phone line. By July 1996, Mpath’s move to acquire Catapult marked a larger shift: the retail-aisle, cartridge-and-dial-tone dream of connected consoles was being absorbed into the server-driven Internet future that would eventually define online gaming.

Old games, dead platforms, forgotten memes, vanished websites, and the strange little artifacts that somehow survived.
A console in 1995 could sound like it was calling a ghost. The cartridge went into a black modem. The modem went into the machine. The machine went into the phone jack. And suddenly, a fighting game or sports cartridge had another person waiting inside it.
Somewhere beyond the living room, another player was performing the same small ritual with the same plastic and the same borrowed phone line.
On July twenty-ninth, 1996, Mpath Interactive moved to acquire Catapult Entertainment, the company behind XBAND. The deal looked like an ordinary startup combination in the online gaming business. Underneath it was a quieter handoff. One future for console multiplayer, sold in retail aisles and carried by dial tone, was being folded into another future built around personal computer services, servers, and the wider Internet.
XBAND was not a sleek promise about a connected future. It was a physical interruption.
A player plugged a supported Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo game into the XBAND unit, plugged the unit into the console, and connected the whole stack to an ordinary telephone line. The device patched supported cartridges well enough to carry head-to-head inputs through Catapult’s network. Then it wrapped the experience in menus, handles, rankings, messages, and a little sixteen-bit social life.
That mattered because console games were still mostly local rituals. You brought a second controller. You sat close enough to smell the carpet. If nobody in the house wanted another round of Mortal Kombat Two or Madden NFL Ninety-Five, the match ended with the people in the room.
XBAND suggested that the room could be bigger. The opponent could be in another area code. The username could become familiar before the person did.
Catapult and Blockbuster Video tried to make that idea feel normal.
In 1995, they announced that XBAND would reach every Blockbuster store in the United States. About four thousand five hundred retail outlets would carry the device at a suggested price of nineteen dollars and ninety-nine cents. Subscriptions cost four dollars and ninety-five cents a month for fifty credits, or nine dollars and ninety-five cents for unlimited play.
The rollout included four-foot store displays, employee training, and a free rental demonstration tape. Future support was promised for games such as Killer Instinct, Weapon Lord, and Mortal Kombat Three.
The charm sits in those practical details. Online console play was not yet a dashboard icon. It was a product somebody had to explain at a video rental counter, beside rewound tapes and plastic security cases, while parents calculated whether the phone bill was about to become a game mechanic.
By the summer of 1996, online games were becoming a sector with press releases, rival startups, and confident predictions.
Catapult was two years old, and its XBAND Game Network had been operating since November 1994. It held the console side of the emerging market. Mpath had a personal computer Internet service in beta, expected to open to the public that fall. There, players could use networked servers to play flight simulators, action games, role-playing games, and board games.
Catapult chief executive Adam Grosser said the combined company would “set the agenda” for online games. Mpath chief executive Paul Matteucci called the two operations a “perfect complement.”
Those sentences are easy to skim now because the future made them sound smaller than they wanted to be. The real drama was not whether the combined company would set the agenda. It was which machine would be allowed to keep it.
The console version of the dream needed special hardware, retail persuasion, support for each individual game, local dial-up access, and enough subscribers in enough places to make matchmaking feel alive.
The personal computer version was messy too. But it pointed toward the model that would survive: accounts, downloads, clients, servers, chat, patches, and an Internet connection that slowly became household infrastructure.
XBAND had the stranger body. Mpath had the more survivable shape.
The acquisition did not arrive as a clean victory parade.
Catapult had been formed in 1994 to develop online gaming for sixteen-bit consoles. In October 1996, it filed for Chapter Eleven reorganization. Its technology, debts, licenses, and hopes entered a bankruptcy and merger structure. Mpath was involved through a subsidiary, with roughly fourteen million dollars in cash, notes, and securities described for creditors and equity holders.
The resulting court record focused largely on patent-license law. It was a dry room under fluorescent lights, but it gave the story its hard edge.
That is a strange ending for something that lived in teenage bedrooms. One month, the object is a little black bridge between two consoles. A little later, it is a debtor, a licensing dispute, an asset plan, and a legal question about whether certain technology agreements can be assumed or assigned.
The paper trail should not flatten the invention.
XBAND was trying to solve problems that modern players barely notice because the solutions are everywhere now. It needed to identify players, move messages, keep rankings, manage credits, deliver updates, and connect two cartridges that had never been built for a living network.
It had to make a sixteen-bit console behave as if it possessed a small online identity.
That identity was fragile. It depended on every supporting piece continuing to care.
The best afterlife for XBAND is not nostalgia. It is maintenance.
In 2022, fresh-eggs documented the work of adding Super Nintendo XBAND support to an emulator. That work involved debugging, modem behavior, protocol handling, and even a way to execute code over a phone line.
The machinery was wonderfully specific: Rockwell modem registers, memory maps, ServerTalk messages, patched game behavior, and an emulated XBAND system connecting to a revival server.
This is the part of Internet history that rarely receives a clean monument.
Someone has to read the old code. Someone has to decide which branch of an emulator is close enough to keep working. Someone has to write down why a packet starts with one byte and ends with another.
Someone has to be excited by a shade of green because it means a dead console modem and a new server have recognized each other.
The modern Retrocomputing Network XBAND server makes the ghost almost practical again. It supports the Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, and Super Famicom, along with X-Mail, BANDWIDTH, XBAND News, player lists, and experimental gameplay through modern connection workarounds.
But the original network expected the telephone system of the 1990s. That system had timing properties that ordinary home networks no longer provide.
The warning is its own little poem.
The Internet can imitate many things, but sometimes it has trouble imitating a phone line.
It is tempting to call XBAND ahead of its time and leave the phrase on the shelf. The better phrase is more physical.
XBAND was attached to its time.
It depended on rental stores, sixteen-bit cartridges, local phone numbers, monthly credits, and the odd seriousness of kids who knew a ranked match could begin only after the household line was free.
Modern console networks inherited pieces of its imagination without inheriting its rituals. Matchmaking became normal. Friends lists became expected. Messages, rankings, updates, and network identities became background furniture.
Later systems made online play feel less like a stunt and more like weather.
XBAND still feels different because it had to announce the trick. It made the connection visible. It asked the player to build the stack by hand: game into modem, modem into console, console into television, cord into wall.
Every match began with a small act of belief in infrastructure that barely existed yet.
The acquisition by Mpath did not kill that feeling by itself. The market was already moving, and the console network was already carrying too many delicate requirements.
But July twenty-ninth catches the hinge in motion.
The startup language said combination.
The object on the floor said goodbye.
A username blinked on a sixteen-bit screen, waited for a stranger, and listened to the line go quiet.
