Hey everybody, and welcome to another episode of sports prep live, sports prep live, where we unbox the bike and talk excellence in athletics. What is up everybody? I'm great and Prescott, and welcome back to sports prep live. I'm here with. KB, today's gonna be a little bit different. We're gonna spend the first part of the show talking, talking sports per usual, and then on the back half, it's gonna be a little bit of reflection. And what's to come for sports prep as we conclude season six here. Yes, so. KB, welcome back as always.

K.B. 0:57
Good to be here as always.

Graydon Prescott 0:58
And then we can start with, we can start with the WNBA back, yeah, preseason. Preseason is underway.

K.B. 1:05
Yes,

Graydon Prescott 1:06
your initial reactions? The at least, I'll give my initial reactions. Indiana's gonna be really

K.B. 1:11
gonna be tough.

Graydon Prescott 1:12
Yeah,

K.B. 1:12
they are going to be tough.

Graydon Prescott 1:13
They look incredible. They put a whooping.

K.B. 1:16
A BTA,

Graydon Prescott 1:17
yeah. On

K.B. 1:18
New York, liberty,

Graydon Prescott 1:18
on the New York

K.B. 1:19
I saw that. I saw

Graydon Prescott 1:20
this 109 to 91 and then the Phoenix Mercury beat the sky. No surprise there. Minnesota got a win, and the Valkyries beat the Seattle storm. Now I am not going to overreact, because it's preseason,

K.B. 1:32
sure, sure,

Graydon Prescott 1:32
but I do think that that when that the fever got against the Liberty may be a little reflective of what's to come. Now, Caitlin played terrible,

K.B. 1:40
correct?

Graydon Prescott 1:40
And they still won by they still won by 18. I

K.B. 1:43
think she said, I think she had seven points. She

Graydon Prescott 1:45
had seven points,

K.B. 1:46
just a lot of threes that

Graydon Prescott 1:47
two for 10,

K.B. 1:48
yes,

Graydon Prescott 1:48
and one for five on these. So it wasn't pretty, but, you know, they still got an 18 point win. And if that's the case, they're gonna be really tough.

K.B. 1:55
And no Lexie Hall, yeah, Boston and

Graydon Prescott 1:58
noalia, Boston, and that's

K.B. 2:00
still, and on the other side of the ball, Stewart was there, an escu was there. Yeah, everyone was there.

Graydon Prescott 2:08
Jonquil Jones was there. Yes. Now, to be completely fair, Brianna Stewart played 12 minutes. Sabrina played 15 minutes. Jonquil Jones played 13 minutes, like they weren't really

K.B. 2:18
right. That would be a different case.

Graydon Prescott 2:19
Yeah. Caitlin only played 17 minutes. Sophie Cunningham, 14 minutes, Kelsey Mitchell, 17 minutes. So the stars weren't really playing. They played like a half, right? Called it today, because you don't want to injure your stars. But still, I think you know the depth a win is a win. Yeah, the depth is that the fever show.

K.B. 2:37
It's not as if the Liberty weren't trying to win,

Graydon Prescott 2:39
correct, correct. They

K.B. 2:40
didn't go all out, but neither did the fever. As you said, the stars, the big players that you know, the notable players that we're all aware of, those big names, they were those minutes were contained. Yeah, right, they no one really went above 20 minutes. And so based on that, there was basically parody in the amount of minutes laid on each side, and still, the fever came away with Vince Victor. And I'll say this, there's a couple of people on that team, and I don't recall her name, but I do know number 32 and she may have been one of the high scores of either game, or certainly on the fee

Graydon Prescott 3:12
for the fever.

K.B. 3:13
Yes, number 32 she's a new face. There is another new face that I am aware of. Watched her in college.

Graydon Prescott 3:18
32 is Jessica Simmons, or Jessica Timmons?

K.B. 3:21
Yes, that's it. Yeah. Had a nice game.

Graydon Prescott 3:24
I'm guessing you're going to number three. Next here,

K.B. 3:26
man like yo, this young lady coming out of South Carolina is no joke. I think it did her well being there, playing all that time, that time under the genius of dawn, Staley Raven, is going to be tough.

Graydon Prescott 3:43
She is, she

K.B. 3:43
is going to be

Graydon Prescott 3:44
especially defensive, yeah, just kind of when she's

K.B. 3:46
got handles, like, wow, I was really, really, she was impressive in her last year of college basketball. Yeah. She is the, for those of you who don't know, she is the player that Caitlin famously waved off, waved off as a non three point threat when they initially played them in a championship game, yeah, yes, and yeah, that's correct, there was a Final Four, and she was not a three point threat. Then

Graydon Prescott 4:11
she is now.

K.B. 4:12
And she spent the whole summer in the lab because of that wave off,

Graydon Prescott 4:16
right?

K.B. 4:16
But the whole summer in the lab working on her three point game, and she came back and, wow, what a huge difference just over the summer. Yeah, so when their season began, you saw South Carolina through Raven Johnson, just an incredible turnaround. I mean, hit threes. She's always been like you said, she's always been great defensively. She always had handles, but the basketball IQ has come into play, meaning, you know, in a good way that that has been developed. The defense was always there. She's she's just sharper. She's more spatially aware. Again, the handles now, the shooting. And she was impressive in this debut. She was, I, you know, they, they have a roster now where some people are going to get cut right coming out of this preseason, however long, I think it's three or four games, three seasons, somewhat, some people are going to. Get cut. She's not going to be one of

Graydon Prescott 5:01
them. No, she's absolutely not. I think she fit perfectly. She does because Dave struggled a little bit perimeter defensively. Caitlin is not known

K.B. 5:08
even bringing the ball up the floor.

Graydon Prescott 5:09
Yeah, and Kelsey Mitchell, I mean, she's solid, but she's also not really known to be a stupendous, outstanding defender. Raven Johnson is, so she's going to relieve a lot of pressure off of Kate and Kelsey, so I think she's the perfect fit for the fever. And then, you know, I'm excited to see what the ACES do. Obviously, I don't expect too much action in the preseason, just because of preseason, but looking forward to May 8 and ninth, opening weekend in the WNBA. You know, obviously I have the ACES season opener on Saturday, May 9 circled on my calendar. Yes, but the game I'm really looking forward to is the Dallas wings are visiting Indiana for opening night. That's gonna be huge.

K.B. 5:49
That's gonna be tough. Three young ladies

Graydon Prescott 5:50
there opening morning. I guess you could say

K.B. 5:53
three young ladies that have faced one another coming up in a Z FUD, who was drafted number one

Graydon Prescott 5:58
overall. The last three number one picks, Paige Becker, the last four number one picks are in this game. AC Fudd, Paige Becker's Caitlin Clark, Alia, Boston,

K.B. 6:06
that's right.

Graydon Prescott 6:06
Yeah,

K.B. 6:07
that's right. Two. Each team has two number one picks

Graydon Prescott 6:10
consecutively,

K.B. 6:10
and they all played one another coming up. The interesting thing about the fever for me is, with the ball coming out of Caitlin Clark's hands, is she going to be because part of her superpower, right? Is that passing. And so it was like a blessing in the curse, right? You had to take good with the bad. She wasn't as solid as she needed to be on ball handling. And so the defenses would attack that weakness, that perceived weakness. And so there were turnovers quite a bit, right? That's unfortunately, that was a thing that she was also known for early in her team. And so now, now now her ball handling has gotten better. She's got a stronger body, all that sorts of fun stuff. Obviously she was coming off an injury, she's fully helped now. She has worked on the handles, but you can still see there is a broad line demarcation between, say, the way that Ray Johnson handles the ball, and then what Caitlin's problem is. A lot of how Caitlin hurts you is with the ball in her hands, coming off passes right like she sees things that you know. Again, Raven has gotten a lot better in terms of her basketball. IQ Caitlin is other world in terms of the way she sees the floor. So do you do you lose some of that, that that force that she's able to play with? Do you lose some of that edge because you're taking ball out of her, playing her more in a two role, as opposed to one?

Graydon Prescott 7:19
I actually think that it can weaponize her playmaking even more,

K.B. 7:24
okay,

Graydon Prescott 7:24
because she's a great, such a great shooter, so she'll steep, still be dangerous off ball. I think it'll weaponize her playmaking even more to have her a little bit less ball dominant. Probably have Kelsey Mitchell doing a little bit more of the ball handling, because she's more solid ball handle. Sure. Probably having Raven Johnson doing a, you know, a little bit of the ball handling too. She's obviously rookie, so she won't have as huge a role. Probably won't start, but she'll be a reliever. But Kelsey Mitchell, I would, if I'm the coach, I'm gonna have Kelsey Mitchell on the ball most of time. Yeah. And I'm gonna use Caitlin. I still think Caitlin is a superstar. I still think, sure, sure, you know, one of the best players in the league. And I think she'll win MVPs eventually, but I think right now, if her ball handling isn't where I would want it to be, and a little bit of that disadvantage is probably her height, she's a lot taller, like, she doesn't handle it like page backs either, right? But she's a lot taller than most of the point guards in the league. So, you know, higher center of gravity. Balls traveling for a longer time, dribbling it can make it a little bit tougher, but I think Caitlin could be a really, really dangerous player. I'm not gonna say like LeBron has been this season, because LeBron has been cutting and, you know, getting layoffs,

K.B. 8:30
and just what I was thinking about that's a muscle she hasn't built up as right, right, playing without the ball, where she's moving around like Steph Curry.

Graydon Prescott 8:38
But I do think that she can be dangerous off the ball in a you know, if they have her timing up, cuts in the right way, she's going to be more dangerous catching and shooting, because she's really, really efficient catch and shoot. And then when she gets the ball, she can catch a defense, that's if she catches a defense that's, you know, in rotation or scrambling, drive and kick, whatever it may be. If a defense is rotating and scrambling, Caitlin's going to find the right play pretty much every time. That's what we've seen from which is why I point to LeBron this year playing right off the ball roll. That's kind of what we've seen from him, where he's just picking defenses apart by having the ball in his hands for one second, like getting 10 assists in a game, and eight of them he had the ball in his hands for a second.

K.B. 9:20
That will be interesting to

Graydon Prescott 9:21
see. I think Kate, I think Caitlin is really capable of being that off the ball facilitator that most teams just don't have. And it makes you so much more dangerous, because then if you're looking for her to make plays off the ball, and she gets it, and she's not in a position where she has to bring the ball court, yeah, that's problematic. So I think if Caitlin can morph into that role a little bit more, she'll open up her game to where she's completely

K.B. 9:46
honest. She's a smart player. Again, she doesn't have the muscle memory for that just yet, but I think she'll develop it quick.

Graydon Prescott 9:50
Well, LeBron didn't either when he when he got into the league, and most of the guys in the NBA or the WNBA who ended up playing like that didn't have that. I mean. Chelsea gray does it from time to time when Jackie Young's bringing

K.B. 10:03
them? Yeah, but I don't even know if that's a fair comparison LeBron, because he is and Caitlin is too. I'm not. He's such a savant that LeBron has had to play basically every position almost since he came into the league. He's been comfortable in every single but he was Caitlin would be comfortable in every position. I'm

Graydon Prescott 10:20
not I'm not asking her to be comfortable in every position. I'm saying LeBron, James, when he came into the league, regardless of the positions he was playing, was extremely ball dominant.

K.B. 10:28
Yes,

Graydon Prescott 10:29
like, course he was, when he got the ball, he was running the show. It wasn't as often catch and immediately, look, am I swinging? Am I driving? Am I shooting? I got one second to make a decision like LeBron had time with the ball in his hands as he got older. I'm talking Luca years is when he started to develop into that off the ball, cutter, catch and shoot, make a play right role. I don't think Caitlin needs to be in the league for 23 years to scan, develop that muscle, to develop the ability to play off the ball,

K.B. 11:00
sure.

Graydon Prescott 11:00
And LeBron never played with a guy who was, you know, ball dominant, like Luca is, and Caitlin is playing with a ball dominant player. And Kelsey Mitchell. Mitchell, yes, I think that if she, she can develop that skill,

K.B. 11:11
who may for the team, maybe she, she fulfills that role for them, the cutting and the slashing. Yeah. From Kelsey Mitchell,

Graydon Prescott 11:17
now, the only reason I say I would want Caitlin in that role is because she's a far better playmaker and she's, I mean, I actually don't know who's better. Shoot between two, and then they both shoot the lights

K.B. 11:28
out. Chelsea Mitchell was

Graydon Prescott 11:29
but Caitlin is flaming, yeah, but Caitlin is objectively the better player, which is she could fit into that

K.B. 11:36
role. Both have their soup house,

Graydon Prescott 11:37
yeah? Now, moving on from the WNBA, we'll talk a little bit about the the NBA.

K.B. 11:43
Wow, there over the weekend, yeah,

Graydon Prescott 11:45
yeah. So not all positive. DiVincenzo Dante DiVincenzo tore his Achilles early in the game for against Denver.

K.B. 11:54
Well before we let's back, before we get to that,

Graydon Prescott 11:57
what are we backing up?

K.B. 11:58
The New York Knicks

Graydon Prescott 11:59
are tied, and

K.B. 12:00
the Atlanta Hawks

Graydon Prescott 12:01
are tied,

K.B. 12:02
are now tied, but the way that they got there Right, like New York, I don't know if you saw

Graydon Prescott 12:06
Well, here's

K.B. 12:07
the diatribe that Stephen A Smith wins. Here's 15 minutes calling

Graydon Prescott 12:12
even a is a Knicks fan. Of course, he's going to be passionate about it. Here's what

K.B. 12:15
I'll say, Yes,

Graydon Prescott 12:16
here's what I'll say, should the Knicks have lost the two games? No, they should not have lost Game Two, especially Game Two, correct? And they shouldn't have lost game three,

K.B. 12:24
right, right?

Graydon Prescott 12:25
But I am silly

K.B. 12:26
that they lost the game three was.

Graydon Prescott 12:28
I'm still confident that New York is the better team, and here's why it's two. Two,

K.B. 12:32
yes,

Graydon Prescott 12:32
the Knicks, two wins. They had control the entire game. In game one, they played they had control the entire game in game four, game four, they lost game three and Game Two by a total combined

K.B. 12:43
2.2 points. Yes,

Graydon Prescott 12:44
that's why I think New York is you think

K.B. 12:46
they're gonna be okay?

Graydon Prescott 12:47
They're fine, and game five is at Madison Square Garden. I would expect them to win that game.

K.B. 12:52
They better?

Graydon Prescott 12:53
Yeah, I do. I have utter confidence, absolutely not. But I would expect them to be the victor in game five and then hopefully take care of business in game six. But that's the reason, or that's my logic, as to why I think New York is fine. Because,

K.B. 13:06
look, they broke out of it, obviously in game four, meaning the lull that they were in defensive and under Tom Thibodeau, right? This, this,

Graydon Prescott 13:14
he's a defensive coach.

K.B. 13:15
Yes, this was a defense first team. But I think a lot of the players felt like, I think this is, this is this is pretty well documented. A lot of the players felt like he was just too hard on them, defensive on the players, to be just defensive pit bulls

Graydon Prescott 13:27
and

K.B. 13:27
rub some people the wrong way. Yeah. Mike Brown, you know, the head coach now of New York Knicks, does not have that reputation. Mike Brown is actually more offensively, sure. And I think it's the defensive laps lapses that have gotten them in trouble,

Graydon Prescott 13:40
yeah. And

K.B. 13:40
it was the defensive presence this last four games, and then the game they won in New York, that's what got them the lead. So are they going to be able to stick with that defensive minded approach first, or are some of these bad habits going to follow them? Because I agree with you, I think they're going to get out of this series, but are some of these defensive lapses going to follow them into the next series? And if they do, they're going to be going home.

Graydon Prescott 14:02
Yeah? Now,

K.B. 14:03
no matter who they play.

Graydon Prescott 14:04
Now New York did this season have the seventh highest defensive rating in the NBA, right? So they were a pretty, a pretty solid, or this might be throughout playoffs, but they did have one of the most solid defensive ratings.

K.B. 14:16
Yeah, and I think there was some residue from Thibodeau, but, you know, he rubs you the wrong way. There's no question about it. He's He's a hard person to take. Person

Graydon Prescott 14:23
to take. He does, yeah, the Knicks had the number five scoring defense in the NBA this season. They, you know, average points allowed per 100 possessions, 110 that was the fifth best in the NBA. And the teams that they were behind are also known defensively

K.B. 14:36
or not. Yes,

Graydon Prescott 14:37
pistons, rockets, thunder, Celtics, rockets, aren't looking like it right now, but they were throughout.

K.B. 14:41
They're under pistons.

Graydon Prescott 14:42
This is true, yeah, but the Knicks are good defense, not as good as they were last year under Tom Thibodeau, but their offense better this year. So I think New York will be fine, but they have to win game five, and they have to stay focused on the defensive end and not relent, because they had a comfortable victory in game

K.B. 14:58
four, right? And Carl

Graydon Prescott 14:59
Anthony Towns. Played the best game of his career. Most I in my piece, had six points. He's had Bitcoin game, but a triple double down two games to one on the road.

K.B. 15:07
Og anobi has been fantastic.

Graydon Prescott 15:10
Yeah, he has like, and he's always, he's always going to be there, defensively,

K.B. 15:13
yes, but even offensively, yeah, he's been really impressive. So I agree they should win this series, you know, maybe it goes, you know, to six games and,

Graydon Prescott 15:22
well, it has to go to six games, but

K.B. 15:24
maybe in terms of, as opposed to seven,

Graydon Prescott 15:26
yeah, so

K.B. 15:27
maybe they get them out in six games. I think that they should be able to close this out now that, you know, they've had their proverbial collar, you'd have been shaken by the proverbial collar up. So they should be okay. Now what you were originally going to start with, big problems in Minnesota,

Graydon Prescott 15:40
intergalactic level, probably

K.B. 15:43
right now, in terms of the way they've been playing? Brilliant. Yeah, absolutely brilliant.

Graydon Prescott 15:47
The biggest issue everyone on, but it's a nightmare situation. Yes, lose

K.B. 15:52
your starting backcourt. That's, that's huge.

Graydon Prescott 15:54
Well, forget losing your starting backcourt. How about losing a guy who's, you know, I think most people would say is a top six player in the NBA,

K.B. 16:02
Anthony Edwards.

Graydon Prescott 16:03
Now this is where they're lucky. They avoided any structural damage

K.B. 16:07
in the knee. No, okay, yep.

Graydon Prescott 16:11
No torn muscles, nothing like that. But he does have a bone bruise and a knee hyperextension and the way he landed, I expect worse.

K.B. 16:19
It look I winced.

Graydon Prescott 16:20
Yeah.

K.B. 16:21
In fact, every time I've seen it, I've winced, even though I

Graydon Prescott 16:24
know it looks horrible,

K.B. 16:25
yes, but he kind of dodged, I almost think he dodged a bullet. Oh, sure, yeah. Certainly did. And so this is an injury that may have him out a couple of weeks as six or as opposed to a year. In the case of

Graydon Prescott 16:37
an ACL

K.B. 16:37
Dave mentioned,

Graydon Prescott 16:38
yeah. Now here's the problem. They're up three games to one

K.B. 16:41
right incident, heading back to

Graydon Prescott 16:42
heading back to the Mile High. I actually think they're gonna close this series in six games. I really do. I think,

K.B. 16:48
Wow.

Graydon Prescott 16:49
I think Denver will win game five, and even without Anthony Edwards, I think the Timberwolves are just built to beat Denver because of how well they play deefs And because of how scrappy

K.B. 17:00
they have given offense in the past.

Graydon Prescott 17:02
And Rudy go bear, who is a guy that a lot of people find a way to hate on. Yes, he's been really against the occasion

K.B. 17:09
defensively. Yes, he's been

Graydon Prescott 17:10
landed and, and I can't say enough about, you know, the play of Jada McDaniels. And, of course, the superstar

K.B. 17:15
right the entire super

Graydon Prescott 17:16
and then the superstar right now is Ayo dasumu, who they picked, who they picked up at the deadline, who's now looking like you know him and Luke canard are looking right?

K.B. 17:25
Dropped 43

Graydon Prescott 17:27
accusations

K.B. 17:27
now, I do think he's a baller, so I think he's going to be okay, but they are. The thing about that performance is they didn't scheme for you previously, right?

Graydon Prescott 17:37
Yeah, well, he had a brilliant game three,

K.B. 17:39
but now

Graydon Prescott 17:40
there's now 25 in game.

K.B. 17:42
I understand that, but it's easy to not that he flew under the radar. But when you have to spend so much time scheming for Randall and scheming, obviously for Anthony Edwards, right? Like you can't get you can't cover everybody, right? And so and you even have to scheme against, like you said, Go bear because of how effective and efficient he's been, right? Yeah. Do we? Do? We do? We try to get him in pick and rolls and things of this nature, but now to have to scheme for somebody and see if they can repeat that performance when he's going to get a lot of attention, right? He's going to be up on the chalkboard in the Denver

Graydon Prescott 18:12
doesn't really have those capable defenders.

K.B. 18:15
Now they may be missing Aaron Gordon, who is one of their more athletic players and great defender, fam. So that's going to make a difference. So it'll be interesting to see if you're right about whether they go in there and either be competitive in game five or resign themselves to the fact that, all right, we're going to play our butts off. But Game Six is really where we're going to turn on the, you know, the jet skis. And that could be dangerous in and of itself, because you can, you can possibly see Denver snatching, you know, the next two, yeah. And what do you think about what happened at the end

Graydon Prescott 18:40
of the game, so I don't think he should have taken the layout. Okay, that's just kind of an unwritten basketball rule. But I also think yokich And the nugget overreacted, yeah?

K.B. 18:49
And it really wasn't the nuggets. It was yokage, yeah, overreacted. I mean, my view is, and I get it, it is an unwritten rule. But my view is, if you don't want to experience that, when they feel humiliated by

Graydon Prescott 19:01
that when the

K.B. 19:01
game, win the damn game, that it's just that simple. So if you have an issue with somebody scoring at the end of the game, look, they threw the pass upward. He happened to be down there. He just kind of laid it in. He didn't dunk it. He didn't do a reverse dunk or a windmill or anything like that.

Graydon Prescott 19:16
Yeah, he

K.B. 19:16
just laid it in. And there was a big brouhaha because jokish ran all the way down the court and got in his face,

Graydon Prescott 19:22
yeah, like, like, Jaden McDaniels was gonna back down or run

K.B. 19:25
away, and then they, you know, he gets ejected, and Randall standing up for his teammate, he gets ejected. I think there's just gonna be a fine. I don't think there'll be much more than that. But really, if you want to avoid that, be more competitive and win the game. But also, I think the reaction was also because he was the one talking smack a couple of games ago, and he backed it up,

Graydon Prescott 19:41
uh huh. And I also think yokich is really in his feelings right now, because, like, I already go bear, yokich is 15 for 48 in the last two games. He is not playing well.

K.B. 19:51
It's not surprising that he was the one that ran down court.

Graydon Prescott 19:54
So that's gonna, that's pretty much gonna conclude the NBA, the NBA segment for now, yes. And then a. Uh, with the time we have about about seven minutes left,

K.B. 20:03
right, right,

Graydon Prescott 20:04
we're gonna

K.B. 20:04
turn the tables a little

Graydon Prescott 20:05
bit, yeah, so we'll do a little bit of reflection for looking ahead Absolutely,

K.B. 20:10
absolutely. So this is gonna be interesting. Now, your high school scene is

Graydon Prescott 20:15
weird. I feel like I'm doing the interview

K.B. 20:18
well, but I think the reason that you want to do this is really cool, because again, high school senior, you'll be going off to college. I know we grown really close in the show, and so I know you know whether it's UNLV and their honors college that are trying to chase you down, whether it's Howard trying to chase you down, Chapman and their amazing broadcasting and product program in Los Angeles, they're trying to chase you down Northwestern University, in fact, Northwestern Medill School, which is universally recognized as the best in the world. So congrats on that. Thank you. I mean, that is absolutely huge. So it's and others. So it's it. This is an amazing opportunity, but it's also an amazing journey that you've been on and now you get to share kind of, not only a little bit about your journey, because you started this podcast that is no radio show when you were like, what?

Graydon Prescott 21:07
Nine years old.

K.B. 21:08
Nine years old, pretty incredible with Caitlin actually being

Graydon Prescott 21:11
one of, yeah,

K.B. 21:11
one of your first interviews. And so I understand now that you want to make sure that in the event that you do leave, you still want this to be an opportunity for others to come behind you, be able to get that experience of covering sports, being a sports analyst, being a photo journalist. I mean, you've done it all on the sidelines, vendor coaches. You've done play by play and called games. So what do you think for you has been the most important thing to help you get to this point and put you in a place where you really do have kind of pick the litter of some of the best broadcast program,

Graydon Prescott 21:43
um, honestly, I think it was just like being willing to, like, dive in and try everything,

K.B. 21:48
sure.

Graydon Prescott 21:49
So I started this all like you mentioned when I was when I was nine, right? Just as, like, a little podcast. And, you know, I had some local guests in the greater Des Moines, yeah. And then, you know, a gentleman who played football at Dowling Catholic High School in West Moines, introduced me to Caitlin Clark, and I had her on the show. And that really kind of launched my program,

K.B. 22:07
Okay,

Graydon Prescott 22:07
onto the map. And then when I came to Las Vegas, I met the great folks at KU NV and, you know, they gave me the opportunity to turn sports prep Live, which was the brand to a radio program.

K.B. 22:17
So this is interesting. Let me stop you there for a second. You actually, if I recall correctly, you wanted to come into KU NV just to do an internship,

Graydon Prescott 22:24
correct? Yeah. And

K.B. 22:26
they found out about my podcast and your ability there, and said, Never mind the internship. We want you to do a radio show exactly sports prep live ended up becoming six seasons ago, but your freshman year in high school a radio program on KU NV, yeah,

Graydon Prescott 22:41
it's exactly right.

K.B. 22:43
That is awesome. Thank you. So for you know, I didn't know we get a lot of questions from listeners, people that are emailing, and if you are, we're going to give you Gray's email address if you happen to be interested to become a broadcaster or to work with sports prep Live, which is this incredible platform that covers athletic, athletics in high school arena, collegiate arena, and obviously pro so we're going to drop his email for you guys to reach out and let him know. Hey, would you be interested in kind of carrying the torch forward on platform, but this has been a really important skill set for you to develop. Do you think that that had a hand in the kind of rich opportunities that you've been afforded in the way of the college,

Graydon Prescott 23:25
absolutely. Um, I think it's, you know, obviously you need to, when you're looking in colleges need to have no grades to be on Sure, if you're doing standardized testing, you need me on point your with your standardized right, whether it be the AC, T or the SAT. But one of the things that colleges look at now, more so than ever, is what separating the rest, especially if you're looking what's your story, your narrative, yeah, yeah, especially if you're looking to go to one of those schools, whether it's an IV or no, they classify it as a new IV, one of the ivy plus, yeah, which is, you know, the journey that I wanted to pursue. They really look for, okay, we get everyone who you know has four good 4.3

K.B. 24:00
days,

Graydon Prescott 24:00
yeah, you know, 3534 it range, a CT, 1550, plus SAT. What separates, why you Yeah. So for me, my, why has been my, you know, growing career in media, that narrative, yeah, my with, you know, sports prep, live. But I started when I was nine, and I grew, you know, to the point where I interviewed Caitlin Clark when she was deciding where she was going to go to college,

K.B. 24:22
I've heard that interview voice was a lot higher. People can check that out on some of the platforms. That's a great interview.

Graydon Prescott 24:27
And then, you know, coming to Las Vegas and this turning into a radio program, and I've, know, had a lot of great opportunities. UNLV has, you know, I can't thank them enough. They've given me a really great opportunity, not just to be on the radio, but also access, and giving me pretty much free reign to reach out to whoever I needed to Sure, sure, I got to cover some of their games

K.B. 24:46
as a high school student, right? You're not even a college student. You're doing this as a high school

Graydon Prescott 24:50
student, right? You know, I got to interview coaches, you know, Coach Lara, Coach passenger, Coach Mullen, and then I got to bring in guests of my own. And all of this was helping me build my. A narrative,

K.B. 25:00
sure,

Graydon Prescott 25:00
my platform and my experience. And then I got to do, you know, like I mentioned, sideline reporting. I got in play by play. I got into writing a, you know, journal, you know, the prep sheet. All of this building my building, my narrative. So I think more so than any this has been huge in developing who I

K.B. 25:17
just the experience that it's giving you Yes, yes,

Graydon Prescott 25:19
and launching me to a point now where I kind of have my pick of the litter.

K.B. 25:23
So from your vantage point, that exposure that had to those different verticals, as you said, doing the sideline hoarding, doing the in studio guest interviews, being out in the field, out in the field, doing interviews and then actually calling games, yeah, that experience you felt is was really important. Of course, like you said, you said, you have to have the grades, you have to have the standardized testing, a CTS and all that. Need to be on point, which is what we do here in vada, as opposed to the SAT. But the thing that you felt really helped push you over the edge, or to make sure that you were competitive. Obviously, you're a top student, but all of the students that apply to, some of the schools you apply to and were accepted into, they're all top students. But you feel like the thing that really helped kind of separate or help you stand out. Was having that experience sports prep live has given you that opportunity to kind of reach into this thing they love and really make the most of

Graydon Prescott 26:08
Yeah, absolutely, I don't think I am where I am without sports prep live. I you know when, when I was younger, I wanted to be a basketball

K.B. 26:14
player,

Graydon Prescott 26:14
sure, and you know that was nice, but now I'm six foot one. You got it really right?

K.B. 26:19
Right

Graydon Prescott 26:19
at six foot 161, to go to play division one basketball, let alone the NBA. But having being six foot one has nothing to do with who you are as a student, right? Who you are outside of school, your curriculars, you're for me, it was via, for some people, it'd be topography, it could be, you know, interest law, it'd be medical, whatever. But you know, I found sports prep live be my launching pad. And, you know, I think it's really important for people to

K.B. 26:43
have their launch Okay, so with that, I mean, we're going to be wrapping up here shortly. You know, Gray has been phenomenal here, phenomenal as a partner, to be on the radio with him. So sports prep live, if we have listeners out there, college students, even high school students. K.B. 28:12
another season in the bag.
