It is 20 hours past midnight as the cherry blossoms peak here in East Asia, and we hope you got out and around this weekend as it was absolutely gorgeous and same thing today to start the week. Danno here and of course no matter the weather we’re absolutely tickled pink that you are with us, with this Monday evening bloomed into posterity as April 4, 2022. Big love to all of you getting with the program this evening to get the proverbial dirt off your shoulder from the Mondays we all just went through, and it is our New Muses Monday night as we explore all that is new from the past Friday drop, and Kat Bass once again joins us for a rousing Popcast Monday of programming to finish the gig tonight with plenty of new tunes in tow as well. For right now though, we go back 30 years to 1992 as The Beastie Boys came on stage to play live for the very first time, and we’ll talk about all of that and more after the Groove is home. THIS is The Drop.
Beastie Boys – Groove Holmes
The Drop is officially on the air tonight with the history and such to begin the cleanse this evening as Monday always leaves a bit of a mark. Danno here, studio 2 GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, welcome to every single one of you, you are the pinnacle of high taste in crass and commercial world of emptiness.
As we are oft wont to do, that was our TIGHT (or) feature for the history to start, taking it back to 1992 with the Beastie Boys. The until then hip-hop crew had been developing a penchant for instrumental jams and interludes on their releases, and it was on this date that they first appeared with live instruments on stage.
It would be just over two weeks’ time when they would release the absolutely seminal Check Your Head, and while on the main their commercial singles would still highlight their hip-hop motif, this album did have a series of amazing instrumental funk & soul jams, including Groove Holmes.
So, as they took the stage that night at The Palladium in LA, they brought their drums and keys and bass with them to showcase some of the jams on the LP. If you’d like to hear just that collection of instrumentals from the group, the compilation album is called The In Sound From Way Out if you’d like to swerve more.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
So let’s switch to the new biz just out this weekend and begin the New Muses dance properly for tonight. Up next we have a new version of Plant Life from Parquet Courts, then Lee Sun and King Gizzard along with the Lizard Wizard shall follow. We’ll discuss all of this after the in sounds have gone way out but for now THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
______
The Drop continues tonight kicking off the week right with our new music showcase for the full two hours. Kat Bass is back for her weekly big hits and fresh buns showcase in the popcast which all starts later in part 3, and as to what we just lifted into the cosmos for higher listening, let’s talk a bit about all of it…
Parquet Courts – Plant Life (Su Yu’s Transient vers) (…the famed NYC band are out with two new versions of Plant Life, which previously appeared only in physical format on their 2021 LP Sympathy For Life, not digitally. However, the band now has this version from Su Yu that you just heard along with the Peak Wifi remix available everywhere in streaming form as of this weekend.)
Lee Sun – I Can’t Get Over You (…this is a tune from an artist I can’t find a ton of information on, although they are self-described as the “cowboy of your dreams, southern sweetheard, blessed child, god’s favorite.” So, we do have something there. Good tune though, hoping to hear more from Leo Sun.)
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Magenta Mountain (…one of the most prolific bands in history is back with their latest single from Omnium Gatherum, which is the band’s upcoming 20th studio album. Just to put this in perspective, they only formed in 2010. The album drops on April 22, so stay on the lookout.)
Alright, so we have a couple more joints to let into the atmosphere this evening before the buzzer on the first quarter sounds and kills the sound. Up next we have Surf Curse with a cut called Sugar. This is the veteran Reno band’s lead single to an upcoming 4th album due out this year, but we’ll have to wait on further details for now. After that to close we have a very poppy quick hitter from Beach Bunny titled Fire Escape, the 2nd single to the Chicago-based band’s sophomore LP called Emotional Creature, which drops July 22. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
Surf Curse – Sugar*
Beach Bunny – Fire Escape

II
The Drop is back and warming things up with the mic business after the 2nd quarter slow burn cold opening. Danno here, studio 2 GFN HQ doing exactly what I do, and Kat Bass brings her popcast in hour 2 shortly, but still a good bit to do here in part 2. Now, as to what we just blurted out, let’s explain ourselves...
Kate Bollinger – Lady in the Darkest Hour (…this is the latest single to the Virginia-based artist’s upcoming EP which is out April 22. Look At It In The Light will be available everywhere that day, and we’ll also be welcoming Kate to the show for an exclusive interview and playlist takeover, so do mark that. Kate’s playlists and vibes are always exquisite.)
Toro y Moi – Deja Vu (…very Strawberry Fields vibes on this one, the latest from Chaz Bear as the artist is properly named. This is the latest single from MAHAL, which would be the artist’s seventh studio album after the landmark Outer Peace LP dropped in 2019 which was a massive breakthrough for Toro y Moi.)
Pod, socials, etc…
More new music on the way and we’ll keep it chill with Warpaint leading the way and then we have cuts from Angel Olsen and Nick Lang to taste test, and we’ll get you the nutritional readout after we all take a bite. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
____
The Drop returns here on our full bloom New Muses Monday night. In case you been massively stuck at work, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom right now, so definitely get out to the parks and mountains it is amazing to see no matter how many years I’ve resided in this lovely country. Now, as to what was just broadcast, let’s read the sheet…
Warpaint - Stevie (…amazing to think that this band out of LA has been around for almost 20 years now, but it is indeed so. This is the latest single to their upcoming fourth studio album out May 6, and that is called Radiate Like This.)
Angel Olsen – All The Good Times (…another new LP coming out in rather short order on June 6 is Angel Olsen’s latest. This will be the opening salvo to the LP, the artist’s career sixth, and it is called Big Time. Always fiercely independent, this should be an interesting record to check out.)
Nick Leng – My Mind is a Mess in the Morning (…the South Africa-born artist now in Northern California is out with a new double single as of this weekend. They had a really great album that turned a lot of heads in 2020 called LEMONS, but nothing has been announced yet on a new album or EP. The A side if you will is called Morning/Midnight if you wanna check out the whole single.)
Alright so the clock is relentless and fast, but we’ll keep it slow to end the 2nd quarter tonight. Up next we have Benet featuring Mamalarky and a cut called Will I See U, and then we’ll finish with an artist called I nude or In ude, and this last joint we’ll swerve into space is called There Was No Way Out. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday and it is indeed halftime.
Benet feat Mamalarky – Will I See U?
Inude – There Was No Way Out

Part III

Hot-Take

Willow - Wait A Minute!
During this year's Oscar Ceremony, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, the Comedic Host of the night, after he made a joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head, a result of the hair-loss condition alopecia. Apparently the comedian is still processing what happened that night.

Tyga & Doja Cat - Freaky Deaky
Recently, Male Plan B has taken a wave on society. The new non-hormonal pill was 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy in mice, now they will proceed to test if it's true on humans. Double safety. Always nice.

Fresh Buns

Harry Styles - As It Was
04.01.2022
Harry Styles has given us a fresh sneak peek single to his album "Harry's House", coming out on May 20th. The song is quite nakedly vulnerable with its personal lyrics. It seems like I'm Harry's therapist, listening to his inner toxicity. Oddly enough I'm enjoying it.

Jensen McRae - Take It Easy
03.21.2022
American singer-songwriter and poet Jensen McRae has released a new track, “Take It Easy”, off her debut studio album, Are You Happy Now?.Her lyrics frequently reference personal experiences and larger social and political themes. What do you think this is about?

Surfaces - I Can't Help But Feel
04.01.2022
"I Can't Help But Feel" is the first single in 7 months after surfaces released the deluxe version of their 2021 album Pacifico. Apparently the song was created during a soundcheck live jam on tour a while back. Yeah, that could totally happen.

Shawn Mendes - When You're Gone
03.31.2022
Is this what I think it is? A break up song? From Shawn Mendes???? It is! *Shocker* although this song seems a bit personal for many. It's about how you learn that you miss something when it's already gone. Honestly, a hard lesson to learn.

Carl Storm - Still See Us Two

Part IV

Nieah ft. Mckdaddy - Want
03.31.2022
R&B singer-songwriter Nieah (Nia) has been independent and has built her own worldview. This album, iamnieah, which captures the ripe music and power of the album, sings her distinct identity as it is titled.

J Balvin & Ed Sheeran - Sigue
03.25.2022
At first glance, this collaboration seems a bit odd. However, these two artists have passed the vibe check and connected over Christmas, writing one of the many singles, Sigue.

Gryffin & OneRepublic - You Were Loved
04.01.2022
Acclaimed LA-based dance producer Gryffin teams up with GRAMMY nominated OneRepublic for the euphoric “You Were Loved". Nostalgic and heartfelt, the anthem finds the collaborators reflecting on the one that got away.

Disclosure & RAYE - Waterfall
03.22.2022
Disclosure are back with a new track called 'Waterfall,' a collaboration with UK singer-songwriter RAYE. The duo was originally inspired by "London and it's beautiful musical history" when writing the "soon to be summer" single, "Waterfall".
