Welcome to the Know the Difference Minute
The painful creep of inflation isn’t letting up. Today’s consumer price index report, or CPI, confirmed what we already know: everything costs more. On an annual basis, CPI is up 7.9%. That’s the highest in 40 years.
Gasoline increases contributed to almost 1/3rd of the index, up almost 38%. But here’s the kicker: this is February data collected before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As you know, oil has taken off like a rocket and gas at even $4 is just a memory. The latest national average sits at $4.31—another new record.
It's tough out there. Demand has been far greater than supply for the better part of a year. We’ve seen it across the board, from autos to building materials to household goods. The Russia-Ukraine situation complicates everything.
Any guesses on next month’s number?
