Welcome to The Sports Hangover Daily, I'm Michael Benatar. Today on the show: the NFL gave us a dead-zone Monday, we're stuck in the preseason waiting room, the NBA and NHL are quiet, and August football should not be this annoying. Let's get into it.

The biggest story from last night is that there wasn't one. And honestly, that's the story.
No NFL games on August ninth. No August tenth games either. The next preseason slate doesn't start until Thursday, after the Hall of Fame Game already came and went on August sixth. So we're sitting in that weird football lobby-music moment. Everybody's in pads. Everybody's posting practice clips. None of it gives us a real box score.
And I hate it.
Not because every day needs some fake crisis. We don't need to pretend a third-string linebacker getting beat in a one-on-one drill is national news. But the NFL spends all summer training us to treat August like the runway to the whole damn season, then hands us a couple empty nights and says, enjoy the vibes.
That's bad content design. Sorry, league office. You're worth a small country's GDP. You can schedule this better.
The annoying part is, football fans are ready. We're not waiting until Week one emotionally. We're already in it. Fantasy drafts are starting. Coaches are lying about quarterback competitions. Fans are watching grainy practice clips like they're CIA files. Everybody's desperate for evidence.
And instead, last night gave us nothing official. No final score. No stat line. No rookie debut. No fourth-quarter comeback by a guy who's gonna be selling insurance in six weeks.
Just silence.
That's the NFL reminding everyone it owns the calendar even when it doesn't give you a product. Impressive. Also rude as hell.

Around the league, the preseason waiting room is the whole deal right now. The verified schedule says no NFL game landed last night, and the next preseason slate begins Thursday. That's when depth charts stop being polite little PDF documents and start turning into job-loss machinery.
Coaches can say whatever they want in press conferences. Once preseason games start, the tape tattles. Backup tackles get exposed. Rookie corners learn the difference between college separation and NFL separation. Some undrafted receiver makes two catches against future accountants and becomes a local folk hero by breakfast.
That's why this empty Monday feels so weird. The league is holding the match over the gasoline can and telling us to wait a few more days.
The Hall of Fame Game being back on August sixth only made the gap feel longer. You get one little sip of fake football, then the bartender walks away. Come on, man. At least leave the pretzels.
On the NBA side, same deal: no games from August ninth or tenth. And that's normal. It's August. The NBA is in its gossip-and-workout-video phase. This is when every fan base convinces itself the nineteen-year-old who averaged seven points in Summer League is untouchable.
No verified scores, no last-night stat lines, no fresh game result to break down. So we're not gonna invent one. That's how you end up yelling about a scrimmage clip and calling it analysis. We're better than that. Barely, but still.
The NHL was quiet too. No games, no playoff race, no verified score-based story from the last twenty-four hours. Hockey in August is basically a locked cabin with one light on. You know someone's in there sharpening skates, but nobody's inviting us inside yet.
And the trending sports bucket didn't save us either. No verified major score or fresh result from last night in the research. So if you're here for a wild final score, bad news: the scoreboard took Sunday off.
Which brings us back to the NFL. Even on a night with no games, it's still the main character. The NBA can sleep. The NHL can hibernate. Baseball can have its own marathon over there. But football fans treat a blank August night like a personal attack.
That's the power of the league. Nothing happens, and somehow we're still mad enough to talk about it.

The Hangover Take: the NFL should stop pretending preseason is some scattered side quest.
Make the opening preseason week a real event. Not longer. Not more dangerous. Smarter.
Give every team a clean national window across four days. Spread it out. Brand it. Sell the rookie debuts. Sell the quarterback battles. Sell the roster fights. Stop making fans hunt through a messy schedule like they're trying to find a parking spot at the Grove.
Because the audience is already there.
Nobody needs starters playing three quarters. That's not the point. The point is access. Give us Drake Maye for one clean series. Give us first-round tackles against real edge rushers. Give us the backup quarterback who might save somebody's season in November.
The NFL turned the draft into a three-day festival. It turned schedule release into content. It can make preseason Week one better than scattered background noise.
Last night had nothing. Fine. One empty night won't kill anybody. But the league should hate empty nights in August. Empty nights are wasted money.

That's your hangover. Go hydrate. I'll see you tomorrow.
