The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The feast of Saint Clare, August 12 in the year of our Lord 02/26. Of today's Mass, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following: As God had raised at the side of St. Benedict his sister Saint Scholastica so he placed by Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Clare whom he made superiors of the second order founded by him. The saint was born at Assisi at the end of the twelfth century.
Vox Liturgica:On a visit to the patriarch Saint Francis she expressed to him her desire to become the spouse of Christ. As he had not yet instituted nuns of his order he sent the young virgin to the Benedictine nuns of Saint Paul and later on to the Benedictine monastery of Saint Angelo Di Palzo in the neighborhood of Assisi. Her sister Agnes having joined her, St. Francis placed them in a small house adjacent to the Church Of St. Damien.
Vox Liturgica:Very soon their mother and many other persons joined them. Their rule entailed austerities unknown until then in monasteries for women. They walked barefooted, slept on the ground, observed perpetual abstinence, and made poverty the basis of their lives so that by detachment they might give themselves more to God. The extraordinary devotion of Saint Clare to the Blessed Sacrament was rewarded by a miracle On the day when the Saracens who besieged Assisi tried to enter the convent of Saint Damien she held up the Saborium and put them to flight. On 08/11/1253 she was visited by a choir of virgins in white robes among whom was one who surpassed in beauty all the others and she went to meet her spouse.
Vox Liturgica:Two years after she was canonized by Pope Alexander the fourth. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The introit. Thou hast loved justice and hated iniquity.
Vox Liturgica:Therefore, God thy God hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. Joyful are the thoughts that well up from my heart, a king's honor for my theme. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Thou hast loved justice and hated iniquity.
Vox Liturgica:Therefore God thy God hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. The Collect. Let us pray. Graciously hear us, O God, our Savior, that as we rejoice in the festival of blessed Clare, thy Virgin, so we may be taught by the spirit of pious devotion through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
Vox Liturgica:A lesson from the second letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. Brethren, he who boasts should make his boast in the Lord. It is the man whom God accredits, not the man who takes credit to himself that proves himself to be true metal. If you would only bear with my vanity for a little, pray be patient with me. After all, my jealousy on your behalf is the jealousy of God himself.
Vox Liturgica:I have betrothed you to Christ so that no other but he should claim you, his bride without spot. The gradual with thy comeliness and thy beauty set out proceed prosperously and take thy crown because of truth and meekness and justice and thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully. Alleluia, alleluia. After her shall virgins be brought to the king. They shall be brought with gladness and rejoicing.
Vox Liturgica:Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew. At that time, Jesus told his disciples this parable. The kingdom of heaven will be like 10 virgins who went to bring the bridegroom and his bride home, taking their lamps with them. Five of these were foolish, and five were wise.
Vox Liturgica:The five foolish, when they took their lamps, did not provide themselves with oil, but those who were wise took oil in the vessels they carried as well as the lamps. The bridegroom was long in coming so that they all grew drowsy and fell asleep. And at midnight the cry was raised, Behold, the bridegroom is on his way. Go out to meet him. Thereupon all these virgins awoke and fell to trimming their lamps.
Vox Liturgica:And now the foolish one said to the wise, share your oil with us. Our lamps are burning low. But the wise ones answered, how if there is not enough for us and for you better that you should find your way to the merchants and buy for yourselves. And so while they were away buying it, the bridegroom came, and those who stood ready escorted him to the wedding, and the door was shut. Afterwards those other virgins came with the cry, Lord, Lord, open to us.
Vox Liturgica:And he answered, believe me, I do not recognize you. Watch therefore for you know neither the day nor the hour. The offertory, the daughters of kings do the honor. At thy right hand stands the queen in a vesture of gold, all hung about with embroidery. The secret, may this sacrifice of thy dedicated people be accepted by thee, O Lord, in honor of thy saints, to whose merits we attribute the help afforded us in tribulation.
Vox Liturgica:Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee, while we say with lowly praise.
Vox Liturgica:Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Vox Liturgica:The communion. Five wise virgins took oil in the vessels they carried as well as their lamps. At midnight the cry was raised, Behold, the bridegroom is on his way. Go out to meet Christ, the Lord. The post communion.
Vox Liturgica:Let us pray. Thou hast filled thy household, O Lord, with holy gifts. Do thou cherish us always through the intercession of her whose festival we are keeping through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
Vox Liturgica:Amen. Saint Clare, pray for us. Saint Lawrence, pray for us.
