Grammar Minute

AI is like a professional librarian. Learn how to use it the right way on today's episode of Grammar Minute!

What is Grammar Minute?

Saving the English language 60 seconds at a time.

Welcome to the Grammar Minute, where we’re saving the English language sixty seconds at a time! I’m Lauren Smyth, and in the last episode, I talked about why you shouldn’t use AI to write your work emails. However—and don’t get mad yet—I’m a professional writer, and I use AI every day. How’s that possible?
A computer science professor once explained to me that AIs are like expert librarians. They can dredge up information that would be tough to find from a Google search, and they’re easy to interact with in colloquial sentences. Of course, the information it provides still needs to be verified. But for preliminary research and for organizing information, AI is often much faster and often much more effective than a human.
My daily use of AI doesn’t involve content generation. Instead, I use AI to sift existing data and help me find new sites where I can do my own research. I fact-check everything it tells me. In my opinion, as a writer, this is acceptable and ethical AI use.
