The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

As broadcast March 21, 2023 with plenty of early rock gusto.  Tonight we start in Cleveland with the very first rock concert, organized by Alan "Moondog" Freed.  Now, much like the howls of a dog at night, this one lasted about 30 seconds before the cops and fire department busted in and ended the show, but even so, it went down in the books as the very first rock n roll concert.  Great tunes out this week from the likes of Night Tapes, Bodywash, Slackin Beats, and Portraits of Tracy while we scoured the map for the new indie goods, so we hope you enjoy!

Part 1
Tiny Grimes – Backslider
Freak Slug – 27 Club
GRMLN – Toe
The Jurgen Clubs – Soft
Night Tapes – Selene
Divorce Court – 140
Dougie Poole – High School Gym

It is 20 hours past midnight and it’s Tuesday so that’s generally kind of a bummer, but here on the radio it is all new exploration and wonderment, fair listener! Welcome welcome welcome to all of you tuned in whether now or later, and as to the previously mentioned dazzlement and wandering it is our Under The Radar indie Tuesday night, so lots of new and slept on underground and indie cuts to check out for the full two hours of programming tonight. Good new joints from some of our favorites including Night Tapes, Bodywash, Slackin Beats, and Portraits of Tracy just to name a few of the slew, but before any of that we go to the world’s first ever rock n roll concert, but be sure not to blink as it’s over in just one song…literally. THIS is The Drop.

Facts
Tiny Grimes – Backslider
- We go back to Cleveland on this date in 1952, as radio station WJW and DJ Alan “Moondog” Freed put on what is considered to be the world’s first rock n roll concert.
- With groups like the just played Tiny Grimes and others like the Rocking Highlanders, the show is a bit too much of a hit, as 25,000 people show up for tickets to a venue that can only hold 10.
- People thus started bum rushing the gates, and the police came in, shutting down the show after just…one song. Even though it was a failure on that level, it is still marked in history as the world’s first rock concert.
Freak Slug – 27 Club
- Out on May 3 is Freak Slug’s new EP titled Viva La Vulva, and this is the lead single that just dropped over the weekend.
- Freak Slug is the solo project of Xenya Genovese who’s based in Manchester and London per the bio, which also states simply kissin’ slugs since childhood.
GRMLN – Toe
- This is the music project of Park Yoo-doo, who was born in Japan and moved to California but now calls Australia home. There’s obviously some Korean lineage there as well.
- This is a standalone single for now, and you can find the rest of the discog courtesy of Carpark Records, which we highly recommend.
The Jurgen Clubs – Soft
- For those not in the know, which I was certainly amongst prior to doing the research, this is a quartet out of Denmark and their latest single.
- This would only be their 4th career single, having made their debut very late last year in November.
Night Tapes – Selene
- Paying tribute to the ancient Greek moon goddess with this title and announcing a new EP, which would be the dream pop crew’s 3rd career.
- The band will be out with Perfect Kindness later in the year, and debuted this tune at the recent SXSW.
Divorce Court – 140
- This is the latest from Divorce Court, which is the solo moniker of Lynden Williams.
- Williams has one album of originals and one of remixes credited thus far under this banner, the former of which is Slow Songs vol 1, in case you wanna dig deeper.
Dougie Poole – High School Gym
- Now this is something you don’t hear of everyday, which is a country singer out of NYC.
- This tune is part of the artist’s recently released album called The Rainbow Wheel of Death, which just dropped Feb 24.

Part 2
M83 – Laura
Parks Squares & Alleys – Alliance
Bodywash – No Repair
Samaris – Wanted 2 Say
XUL ZOLAR – Tell Me
Scotch Mist – Shadowbanned

Facts
M83 – Laura
- The band, aka Anthony Gonzalez, is out with their latest album Fantasy as of this weekend.
- The album is described as the artist trying to return to the pangs of wonderment experienced in childhood, and this tune is a perfect example of that.
Parks Squares & Alleys – Alliance
- For those unaware, this is the solo project of Sergey Khavro, who is based in the Georgian capitol of Tblisi.
- Khavro describes himself as a noise monk and DIY dude in his bandcamp bio, which obviously we are in full support of.
Bodywash – No Repair
- A regular favorite here on Tuesday nights, the duo just released this last week after kicking off their North American tour at SXSW.
- The song itself is inspired by an experience member Chris Steward had in their younger days being involved in a bizarre love triangle, and deciding to let it go.
Samaris – Wanted 2 Say
- This is the latest single from the veteran Iceland band who’ve been doing their thing since 2011.
- With this release the band also announced a new album called Black Lights, which will drop in June.
XUL ZOLAR – Tell Me
- This is a trio out of Cologne in Germany, and they just released a new album called Heidelbach last Friday, of which Tell Me is a part.
- Much like Samaris, this is veteran band that’s been around since 2011, with this being their 2nd LP.
Scotch Mist – Shadowbanned
- Now, there’s a couple of things you might not be familiar with here, and we’ll start with the vocab. To shadowban somebody means to block them from a social media site without their knowledge, making posts, comments, and messages unavailable.
- Now, as to the artist and more importantly in our humble opinion, this is the latest from the band, which is a trio based in NYC.
- They are planning to release a follow-up to their crybaby LP from 2021, which was fantastic, but no announcement on date or title yet.

Part 3
Danke Shane – Fingers Crossed
BENTLE – Sideshow
Portraits of Tracy – The Afterparty
The Natural Lines – Monotony
Cinema Lumiere – Cotton Candy Clouds
Kapote – Brasiliko

Facts
Danke Shane – Fingers Crossed
- For those unfamiliar, this is the solo project of an artist living in Baltimore who hails from Philly.
- Not a lot in the discog thus far, but there’s an album from 2021 called Real Future Ones if you’d like to give that a full spin.
BENTLE – Sideshow
- Now, this is an artist I wasn’t too familiar with prior to digging deeper, but this is another solo bedroom project from an artist named Josh McVay.
- This is McVay’s first music since last year’s Darkest Blue, with this tune and that one both being emotional rides so do check if you dug that.
Portraits of Tracy – The Afterparty
- This is an artist out of Louisiana who’s definitely been picking up steam of late, and we are very much enjoying what’s coming out.
- True name Couren Bowman, the artist has released a couple of albums both in 2021, and it is genre-bending stuff that is exceedingly original and well worth a listen, and this single is the follow up to, of course, The Party, released earlier in the year.
The Natural Lines – Monotony
- This is a single from an album just about to drop Friday, which is the band’s self-titled debut LP.
- The Natural Lines are based in NYC, and appear courtesy of Bella Union. A good band on a good label…the system works.
Cinema Lumiere – Cotton Candy Clouds
- This is a band of self-described pop music alchemists who hail from the Philippines, although the Japanese styled cover to this single along with the French moniker could easily throw you.
- This song dropped from the band’s forthcoming album titled What’s Life Without Whimsy, out later this spring.
Kapote – Brasiliko
- Now, this is a tune that is quite a bit older having been released in 2019, but I can’t for the life of me figure out why it’s been popping up in so many places this week.
- Kapote is the moniker of Mathias Modica, an Italo-German music nerd based in Berlin, which is not surprising as this is very much in the Jazzanova mold right here, which will end part 3.

Part 4
Emina Sonnad – Turn the record over
Nanuk – Young
Gideon Jeremia – Du kommer aldrig ta Manhattan
Neil Cowley – Ticker Tape
Slackin Beats & Kamohelo – TIME
Nevaris – Dub Sol

Facts
Emina Sonnad – Turn the record over
- So we finished part 3 in Berlin and we start part 4 in the same place.
- This is a tune that has gotten a lot of very deserved praise since release on Valentine’s Day. The song itself is a captivating observation on how the people that help you out when you are at your lowest often will not be around to see you reach your potential.
- This is an artist to watch out for, people.
Nanuk – Young
- This is an artist out Nottingham who also has made a beautifully constructed piece of music with this latest single.
- Nanuk says that they write songs from where it counts, stating that sometimes it’s best to just step back, be honest and be yourself.
Gideon Jeremia – Du kommer aldrig ta Manhattan
- Now, this is an artist I can’t find a lot about but pretty sure Gideon hails from Sweden as this and all the other tunes are in Swedish, but there’s not a lot of info out there aside from surface stuff.
- This latest single from Jeremia just dropped March 8.
Neil Cowley – Ticker Tape
- This is an artist based in Bristol, England who has embraced a more electronic and ambient sound since The Neil Cowley Trio disbanded.
- The tune is part of an upcoming 4 track solo debut EP called Battery Life, which drops this Friday.
Slackin Beats & Kamohelo – TIME
- This is a joint off a new 6 track EP that just dropped last Thursday called CROOK.
- Slackin Beats is a producer based in Malmo, Sweden, and here the artist teams up with Kamohelo, who’s out of SA.
Nevaris – Dub Sol
- This is a tune that just dropped yesterday and I have absolute zero information on this artist. I do know this is their very first release, and what better way to go out than letting the dub shine in long player format?
