Welcome to the Career Management Podcast at Ivey Business School.

I'm Kate and my pronouns are they/them.

On today's mini-episode, I'm sharing some of the many reasons you might talk to a career coach beyond traditional things like resumes,

and offer some tips for when you book an appointment. Some of our most common topics can be broken down into ABCs.

Let's start with A. You could talk to a career coach about anything, but I realize that's kind of broad.

So let's start with some examples.

We support you with affirming what your goals are, accountability for taking steps towards those goals, and addressing barriers that get in the way,

advocating for yourself in the recruitment process, and creating multiple Plan A's.

We know there's more than one way to live a fulfilling life. So rather than having one very specific plan A, imagine multiple plan A's!

Next is B. We support you with brainstorming or generating many ideas,

big picture thinking, and how you can get from point A to point B, fostering a bias towards action so that you're not just thinking about these things,

but actually going out there and trying them, and offering best practices for career strategies.

Lastly, we have C. We support you with curiosity, encouraging you to take an exploratory approach, collaboration

or thinking about how others might help you, such as offering unique perspectives and fostering creativity,

challenging dysfunctional beliefs that might be holding you back, and cultivating a Life Design mindset so that you don't just walk away with answers,

but you walk away with skills and strategies you can rely on in future.

Here are some Top Tips regarding one on one appointments. Choose a goal or topic.

Think about what you're hoping to get from the 30 minutes and how your coach can support you.

It's also okay if you're not sure and just need a space to talk things through.

There are no right or wrong goals. If it matters to you, then it matters to us.

We trust that you are the expert in your life and know what's best for you.

Yes, coaches know some best practices and can offer industry insights, but you are talented, intelligent and resourceful.

We don't make decisions for you. We help you choose the best decision for yourself.
