Voters in three states headed to the polls Tuesday for key primary elections and runoffs shaping this year’s midterms, with most candidates backed by President Donald Trump either winning outright or moving on to runoff contests. But one Trump-endorsed contender “fell short in a major swing state race that Republicans had hoped to lock down,” marking a notable setback amid an otherwise strong night for the president’s picks. The races also brought the country “one step closer” to filling a vacant seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Ryan Foley reports that the night’s results underscored Trump’s continued influence in Republican primaries, even as not every endorsement translated into victory. Altogether, the elections offered three major takeaways as both parties sharpen their battle lines for November.

California Governor Gavin Newsom is accusing President Donald Trump of using the Justice Department as a political weapon, saying an FBI probe touching his wife’s nonprofit is part of a vendetta tied to his possible White House ambitions. In a video statement, Newsom said, “After calling for my arrest last year, Donald Trump directed his Department of Justice to investigate me,” adding, “to get me, he’s coming after my wife, Jen.” He also claimed Trump is targeting him “because I am considering running for president.” But CNN reports Newsom himself is “not currently under investigation.” Correspondent Paula Reid said sources told her there is “not an investigation directly into Newsom,” though investigators are reportedly examining Jennifer Siebel Newsom, her nonprofit The Representation Project, and possible tax-related issues stemming from a 2025 whistleblower complaint.

Comedian Nate Bargatze, the nation’s highest-grossing stand-up, is facing social media backlash after attending UFC Freedom 250, a White House-hosted event marking America’s 250th birthday and President Donald Trump’s 80th. The controversy grew after actress Cheryl Hines posted an Instagram Story showing Bargatze with Hines, her husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Vice President JD Vance nearby; other photos placed him with Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Joe Rogan, Luke Bryan and House Speaker Mike Johnson. Some fans said they would no longer support the “Breadwinner” star, while others defended him. A source close to Bargatze told The Daily Beast his attendance was “not political” because UFC is his “favorite sport.” Bargatze has previously said, “I don’t think it’s what people are coming to me for,” regarding politics, though he added, “I actually enjoy politics.”

Christian rapper Lecrae says a disturbing late-night experience in Africa led him to what he called a waking “vision” of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk’s assassination, describing “the voice of demons laughing” as “the room turns purple” and he saw blood “coming out of his body.” Speaking on his “Deep End” podcast, Lecrae stressed, “I’m not saying … I have the full understanding of it all,” adding, “I’ve never had this experience in my life.” He said the killing of Kirk, 31, co-founder of Turning Point USA and TPUSA Faith, was “satanic and demonic” and “heinous,” declaring, “I grieve for the family of Charlie Kirk.” Lecrae also addressed criticism over his delayed response, saying, “I’m in Africa … I’m slow to speak because I’m trying to process,” while urging Christians to reject violence: “Jesus comes and says, it’s not the way.”

A fiery clash is erupting in Texas’ high-stakes U.S. Senate race after Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said Democratic nominee and state Representative James Talarico is “going to Hell” for what Patrick called “blasphemy.” Speaking to cheering delegates at the Texas Republican convention in Houston, Patrick said, “That’s not a Bible I’ve ever read,” adding, “I’m going to pray for that guy, because when he loses the Senate race, if he campaigns against God as he’s been doing, he’s going to Hell, for sure.” Patrick also warned Republicans, “We cannot lose Texas. We cannot lose this Senate race.” Talarico, who has made faith central to his campaign and recently walked back past comments including “God is non-binary,” fired back on X, saying, “Love feels like blasphemy when you worship power.” Attorney General Ken Paxton is Talarico’s general election opponent.

A former FBI agent is raising fresh questions in the mysterious disappearances and deaths of U.S. scientists and military-linked figures in New Mexico. Speaking with NewsNation’s Brian Entin, former FBI agent Ben Hansen discussed retired Air Force Maj. Gen. William McCasland and Los Alamos National Laboratory employee Melissa Casias, while cautioning he has “nothing to support” one theory involving a weapon that could induce depression or paranoia. Hansen said, “If that is possible, is it possible that foreign adversaries are targeting U.S. military or contractors and employees?” He also dismissed direct UFO involvement in McCasland’s case, saying, “I don’t think he was taken aboard or something like that.” About Casias, Hansen called the evidence “very weird,” adding, “That is not normal,” after reports her phones had been reset and left behind. New Mexico State Police say Casias’ remains were identified, but her cause and manner of death remain undetermined.
