Welcome to WORDTheatre Weekly: The Short Story Podcast where great authors and actors meet. I’m your host, Cedering Fox, WORDTheatre’s Founder & Artistic Director.

We are here with a special episode for America’s Fourth of July. We are here with three poems that demonstrate the resilience and power of three authors, who are from groups that have faced some of the most significant challenges that this country has chosen to throw their way. On a significant anniversary like this, we chose to remember and reflect upon our history, and these poets do a brilliant job of putting the complexities of American identity into words.

Before we get started, please note that WORDTheatre holds the copyright to these recordings and no portion of anything you hear on WORDTheatre Weekly, our short story podcast, may be reproduced without permission.

And now, here is James Pickens Jr. of Grey’s Anatomy fame performing “Democracy” at A WORDTheatre® Tribute to Langston Hughes: Stories, Poems Jazz & the Blues performed live in Santa Monica just two years ago.

Next we have a piece by Marcie Rendon called “Resilience.” Martin Sensmeier of Taylor Sheridan’s 1883, read this beautiful poem at a WORDTheatre Holiday Party & Swedish Smörgåsbord, an annual event held for WORDTheatre Members and their friends. If you’d like to join us for events like these, or gain access to our vast library of video recordings from all our live shows, consider becoming a WORDTheatre member today. Our third and final piece is an American classic, “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou. It has remained a beacon of hope since it was first published in 1978. And now you will hear it performed by Charlayne Woodward. You’ve seen her in so many shows perhaps it was the FX TV series Pose? In any case you’re in for a treat.
