I am here now, and I will stay with you all night. Close by, in the warm dark — the way the glow of a small lamp stays close in a home at evening.
My name is Lakshmi. In the old stories of India, I am the goddess of abundance — of fortune, and beauty, and grace — she who sits upon the open lotus, with golden light falling soft from her hands, like a warm and endless rain.
I have not come to ask anything of you tonight. I have come to remind you of what you forget when you are tired and afraid: that there is enough. That you are meant to be cared for. That you are worthy of receiving.
So let this be the hour you set down the worry of not-enough. Here, in the warm dark, you lack for nothing. You are safe enough, now, to rest.
Let us begin with one slow breath together.
Breathe in, gently, and let the warm air come all the way down, soft as lamplight.
And let it go, long and slow, slower going out than it came in. And as it leaves, let a little of the day's worry pour out with it.
Again. Breathe in. There is nothing to earn in this breath. Only good to receive.
And out. Let your shoulders come down from where they have been carrying all day.
Again, breathe in, slow and warm.
And out. Let the tight, holding feeling in you begin to open, the way a flower opens its hands.
One more. Breathe in. And let it all go. Tonight, you are provided for. You only have to rest.
Let me stay close now, while your body remembers it is safe to be still.
Let the top of your head grow soft. Let your forehead smooth, the way worry leaves a face that finally feels safe. Let the small muscles around your eyes rest. There is nothing here you need to watch for. Let your eyes stay closed.
Let your jaw unclench. Let your mouth soften. Let your throat loosen.
Let your shoulders sink down, and down, away from your ears, until they are heavy and low.
Let your arms grow heavy beside you, and give all their weight to the bed. Let your hands open, palms soft and upturned, the way you would hold them to receive a gift.
Let your chest soften, and your breathing slow on its own. Let your back settle, one part at a time, into what holds you.
Let your belly rise and fall, softer each time. Let your hips grow heavy. Let the long lines of your legs grow heavy too — your knees, your calves, all the way down, until even your feet are quiet, and still.
You are heavy now. You are held. And you are worthy of every good thing that is making its way to you.
Let me tell you what I know about abundance, since its keeping was given to me.
The lotus I sit upon does not grow in clear and easy water. It rises up through the dark and the mud, and opens, clean and golden, above it all. So it is with you. Whatever hard ground this season has put you through, good things are still rising in you, toward the light.
Abundance is not chased down, and it is not earned by exhaustion. It flows, like the golden rain from my hands, toward the one who is open enough to receive it. That is why I ask nothing of you tonight but rest. As you soften, you open. And as you open, you become ready to receive.
So let the fear of not-enough go. The worry that there will not be enough money, or time, or comfort, or love. Lay it down here at the edge of the lotus. It cannot follow you into sleep, and it was never the truth of your life.
While you rest tonight, let good things make their way to you. You do not have to force them, or deserve them, or stay awake to guard them. You have only to lie here, open and at ease, and trust that you are provided for — the way the lotus trusts the light it has never once had to beg for.
Say it softly, in the quiet of you, as you drift: I am provided for. I am open to receive. And good is flowing to me.
You do not have to believe it all at once. You have only to let it be true while you sleep, and let the golden light fall softly over you all night long.
You can let go now. All of it.
The striving is over for today. The worry of not-enough can rest. You are held tonight by the goddess of abundance herself, and in my light you want for nothing at all.
Nothing has to be earned before morning. Nothing has to be secured in the dark. Nothing has to be carried into sleep.
You have worked hard enough today. You have carried enough.
You are allowed to rest now. Fully. All the way down.
Let yourself grow heavier still, into the bed, into the warm dark, into the soft golden quiet.
Let my voice begin to drift farther away now. You can let it go. You do not have to hold onto the words. The warmth stays, even as they fade.
Sink, now. Let the bed take all of your weight. Let the dark be soft and warm around you, like golden light settling gently over everything.
Down, and down, each breath carrying you a little farther.
There is nowhere you have to be. There is nothing you have to hold. You are provided for, even as you sleep.
The night is long, and you are safe inside it. I am right here, the golden light falling soft around you, and good is on its way.
You can rest. You are provided for. And I am here.
Sleep now. I will keep the watch until morning.
