This is Autumn Smith with WKNC. Here is your weekly news roundup as North Carolinians are gearing up for election day on November 3, 2026. Some residents on NC State campus express concern about the removal of Talley Student Union as an early voting site, according to ABC 11. Wake County Board of Elections Chairman Keith Weatherly, who spearheaded the site change, cited the parking deck as inconvenient for voters.

However, students on Main Campus are now encouraged to vote at the Business Service center on Western Boulevard, NC State's sole early voting location in 2026, which is over a mile away from Talley. To prepare for the long walk, pack the polls. North Carolina State's Voter Coalition is planning student walks from campus to the Business Service center on October 15th when early voting begins. In this midterm election cycle, North Carolinians will be voting on the national level to fill one seat in the Senate, including and 14 seats in the House of Representatives. The voter Registration cutoff is October 9, 2026. Citizens in the Triangle area can visit the North Carolina State Board of Elections website to review their voter registration status. Voter registration may be completed online through the DMV or by filling out a North Carolina voter registration application and submitting it by mail.

North Carolina State students, faculty and staff with disabilities are encouraged to contact the Disability Resource Office for more information on voting services, listeners on campus can Visit studentservices.ncsu.edu/voter-registration while statewide information is available at ncsbe.gov. Last Monday, Wake county commissioners voted 5-2 to approve a merger between WakeMed and Atrium Health, two hospital systems located in Raleigh and Charlotte, respectively. The deal is raising concern about an increase in both monthly premiums and out of pocket costs for patients if partnered with Atrium Health, WakeMed is expected to negotiate higher reimbursement rates from insurance companies. North Carolina governor Josh Stein lobbied Atrium to cap reimbursement rates and prevent a price increase, but it will only be enforced for five years after the deal is approved. Chairman Don Mial voted to approve the deal, citing county growth and a shortage of beds in WakeMed's emergency rooms. The merger has a chance to help with the lengthy legal process of acquiring more hospital beds, as other Raleigh hospitals such as UNC and Duke can test these supplies as well. The merger has not been completed as WakeMed and Atrium await judgment from NC Attorney General Jeff Jackson in the Federal Trade Commission.
