The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The feast of saints Hippolytus and Cassian. Martyrs. August 13 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today's feast, Dom Prosper Guerrege writes the following, Not far from the sepulchre of Saint Lawrence, on the opposite side of the Tibertean Way, lies the tomb of Saint Hippolytus, one of the sanctuaries most dear to the Christians in the days of triumph.
Vox Liturgica:Prudentius has described the magnificence of the crypt and the immense concourse attracted to it each year on the Ides of August. Who was this saint? Of what rank and manner of life? What facts of his history are there to be told beyond that of his having given his blood for Christ? All those questions have in modern times become the subject of numerous and learned works.
Vox Liturgica:He was a murderer and that is nobility enough to make him glorious in our eyes. Let us honor him then and together with him another soldier of Christ Cassian of Imola whom the church offers to our homage at the same time. Hippolytus was dragged by wild horses over rocks and briars till his body was all torn. Cassian, who was a schoolmaster, was delivered by the judge to the children he had taught and died of a thousand wounds inflicted by their styles. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost.
Vox Liturgica:Amen. The introit. The salvation of the just is from the Lord and he is their protector in the time of trouble. Be not immulus of evildoers nor envy them that work iniquity. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages.
Vox Liturgica:Amen. The salvation of the just is from the Lord and He is their protector in the time of trouble. The Collect. Let us pray. Great we beseech Thee, O Almighty God, that the venerable solemnity of Thy blessed martyrs, Hippolytus and Cassian may increase in us both devotion and salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
Vox Liturgica:Amen. A lesson from the first letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Hebrews. Brethren, remember those early days when the first light came to you and the hard probation of suffering you went through. There were times when you yourselves were publicly exposed to calumny and persecution. There was a time when you took part with those who had the same path to tread.
Vox Liturgica:You showed your sympathy with those who were in bonds. And when you were robbed of your goods, you took it cheerfully as men who knew that a higher, a more lasting good was yours. Do not throw away that confidence of yours with its rich hope of reward. You still need endurance if you are to attain the prize God has promised to those who do his will. Only a brief moment now before he who is coming will be here.
Vox Liturgica:He will not linger on the way. It is faith that brings life to the man whom I accept as justified. The gradual, the just cried and the Lord heard them and delivered them out of all their troubles. The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a contrite heart, and he will save the humble of spirit. Alleluia.
Vox Liturgica:Alleluia. The white robed army of martyrs praise thee, O Lord. Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Luke. At that time Jesus said to his disciples, Have nothing to do with the leaven of the Pharisees.
Vox Liturgica:It is all hypocrisy. What is veiled will all be revealed. What is hidden will all be known. What you have said in darkness will be repeated in the light of day. What you have whispered in secret chambers will be proclaimed on the housetops.
Vox Liturgica:And I say this to you who are my friends. Do not be afraid of those who can kill the body and after that can do no more. I will tell you who it is you must fear. Fear him who has power not only to kill but to cast a man into hell. Him you must fear indeed.
Vox Liturgica:Are not sparrows sold five fortuppants and yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight? As for you, he takes every hair of your head into his reckoning. Do not be afraid then. You count for more than a host of sparrows. And I tell you this, whoever acknowledges me before men will be acknowledged by the Son of Man in the presence of God's angels.
Vox Liturgica:The offertory. The souls of the just are in the hand of God and the torment of malice shall not touch them. In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die but they are in peace. The secret. We offer thee, O Lord, the gifts of our devotion.
Vox Liturgica:May they be pleasing to thee for the honor of thy saints and through thy mercy profitable to our salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, The heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee, while we say with lowly praise.
Vox Liturgica:Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion.
Vox Liturgica:That which I tell you in the dark, speak ye in the light, saith the Lord. And that which you hear in the ear, preach ye upon the housetops. The post communion, let us pray. May the partaking of thy sacrament which we have received save us, O Lord, and confirm us in the light of thy truth through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
Vox Liturgica:In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Saint Hippolytus, pray for us. Saint Cassian, pray for us. Saint Lawrence, pray for us.
