Leadership Toolbox is a practical series designed to help student leaders build skills they can use right away. Explore topics including communication, organization, collaboration, goal setting, motivation, relationship building and more.
Welcome to the Student Activities Online Leadership Toolbox. Today on Inspired Leadership, I'll be talking about Stepping Up to Service and getting started. Start by recognizing the value of service. Service is more than giving time. It's an opportunity to apply your knowledge, develop skills, and create meaningful impact in your community.
Lucy Bivins-Zheng:Now reflect on the benefits. Strengthen your understanding of what you learn. Gain hands on experience. Explore your values. And act on what you believe.
Lucy Bivins-Zheng:Build critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills. Now take initiative. Don't wait. Step up and seize the moment. Begin thinking about how you can incorporate service into your daily life.
Lucy Bivins-Zheng:Next, prepare intentionally. Conduct a personal resource inventory to identify your schedule, define your availability, and recognize your skills, strengths, and interests. Now ask yourself key questions. When can you commit your time? What environments fit your goals?
Lucy Bivins-Zheng:What do you want to gain from this experience? Use these answers to guide your decisions. Now create a plan. Match your skills and interests with service opportunities. Design an experience that aligns with your goals and supports your growth.
Lucy Bivins-Zheng:Use your resource inventory to stay focused, reduce stress, organize your time. Present yourself professionally when connecting with service organizations. Now explore available opportunities. Research campus resources and connect with offices, student organizations, and community partners. Use these connections to identify meaningful service experiences.
Lucy Bivins-Zheng:Take action. Reach out. Ask questions. Engage with organizations that align with your goals and values. Now commit to the experience.
Lucy Bivins-Zheng:Show enthusiasm. Demonstrate professionalism. Follow through on your responsibilities. Recognize your impact. Understand that your effort contributes to something larger than yourself.
Lucy Bivins-Zheng:Your involvement helps strengthen communities and support meaningful change. As you continue, stay engaged, build connections, develop your skills, use each experience to grow both personally and professionally. Remember, your most valuable resource is you. Your energy, commitment, and willingness to serve will shape your experience and influence others. And that's it.
