The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

It's our first New Muses Monday in a couple weeks' time due to the tragedy in Itaewon over Halloween weekend, and let's just say we just can't get enough.

Show Notes

As broadcast November 7, 2022 because we just can't seem to get enough.  Tonight we open with a dig at weak and befuddled Glasgow Rangers, but that's not the focus...although they are PATHETIC and generally terrible.  We focus on the 2020 Rock Hall Inductees of which Depeche Mode was one in a very strong class.  After that, it's all our favorite new tunes for the first half of the show finishing with a spotlight on Stella Donnelly playing in Seoul on December 6 at Rolling Hall.  Part 3 as per usual we are Poppin' Off with the big new tunes over the weekend, with highlights from Selena Gomez, Masego, and BGYO, the latter of whom dropped a new album Friday!  To finish in part 4, it's some of our favorite new Korean indie, with the big highlight coming at the grand finale with JAMBINAI announcing a new EP out next year!

It is 20 hours past midnight after a brisk start to all the trouble this week, and we are ready with all the new tunes once again to get that dirt off your shoulders tonight. And this week’s opening entry in the spacetime continuum is written hopefully as November 7, 2022. Danno here and before I start thanks to all the listeners sending their birthday wishes this weekend and tuning in tonight or whenever you do it, coming at you but not really for you from GFN HQ studio 2 in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Most importantly, our week of national mourning over the terrible incident is finished even though we keep the victims and their families in our thoughts forever, but here on the show we are back to normal service and we start with our Rock Hall inductees from two years ago, who were announced on this date, and we’ll talk about other stuff we can’t get enough of side opposite the opening bump. This is The Drop.
Depeche Mode – Just Can’t Get Enough
The Drop is back doing the thing for this week, our first New Muses Monday in a couple weeks’ time due to the tragic loss of life in Itaewon over Halloween weekend, and keeping the victims and loved ones in our thoughts forever all the time here on this show, we hope you are too.
However, we just started with Depeche Mode and Just Can’t Get Enough as over the weekend mighty Glasgow Celtic went 7 points clear of Rangers at the top of the Scottish premiership. Haha…just kidding there, well…kind of. I’m sure my fellow supporters were singin’ that little fan favorite all weekend though.
It was on this date two years ago that the Rock Hall announced its latest inductees, which included Depeche Mode along with a strong group of luminaries including Whitney Houston, The Notorious BIG, and The Doobie Brothers amongst others.
As to that opening tune from the infamous party boys out of the UK, that tune since release in 1981 has become a landmark dance hit. Interestingly, Depeche Mode founding member and keyboardist Vince Clarke wrote this joint, and musically, it was inspired by "To Cut a Long Story Short" by Spandau Ballet, released the year prior. To that point, Clark wasn't into dance music at all, but the Spandau Ballet song turned him around on the subject, and this classic was later born.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
Now, let’s get into the new stuff this week, as there’s a lot to catch up on. To start our fresh cuts taste tester for this week, we have Phoenix out with their new LP, and we’ll follow that with a pair of joints from Connie Constance and Yves Tumor respectively, and we’ll talk about what’s going on in the background and coming up if anything after the audio has done the dance in the stars and returned to earth. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
______
Back on The Drop and into the final verbosities of the first quarter of tonight’s game of audio mirrors. It is our New Muses Monday and the first in a couple weeks’ time due to the tragedy in Itaewon over Halloween. This is Danno of course, tragic or not, but generally the former, and we just had a nibble on our first fresh cuts of the week, so let’s get to the details but not get too deep in the pedantry. That was…
Phoenix – After Midnight (…this was kind of the big doings over the weekend, as the French Grammy winners were back with their first album in several years like 6 or 7 I believe but don’t hold me to that. Alpha Zulu is available everywhere as of Friday, go check it out if you dug that first fresh cut of this week’s show. Pretty good LP right there.)
Connie Constance – Kamikaze (…this is an interesting bit of background from the artist, and this tune is part of the album Miss Power, which just dropped Friday. Constance says, ”When we wrote this song, I knew I wanted a punk track for the record because it’s a whole part of my energy that wasn’t on there yet. Honestly, I think this song came together in about 10 minutes after I came offstage at [East London venue] Village Underground. When I was recording it, I felt like I was being screamed at by my feminist punk ancestors.”)
Yves Tumor – God Is a Circle (…always an interesting listen, this is the latest standalone from the Turin-based artist. Hard to describe the sound, but it seems that the songs almost always have heavily familiar vibe prior to self-immolating and becoming truly interesting. If you dug that, do check 2020’s Heaven To A Tortured Mind if you’re not familiar, one of our top albums of that year.)
Alright, so let’s get into our final pair of cuts for our first fourth this evening. Up next is the latest from First Aid Kit called Palomino. This is the title track to the Swedish sisters’ fifth studio album, which is an homage in important ways to classic rock. However, that doesn’t do this complex, sparkling album descriptive justice, it’s a very good listen and getting lots of love from the critterati and fans over the weekend. After that, the latest from Samia will finish the first quarter tonight, and this cut is called Mad At Me, which features Papa Mbye and appears on the highly anticipated Honey LP, which drops in full on January 27 of next year. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
First Aid Kit – Palomino
Samia – Mad At Me

Back on The Drop and we are slow cookin at least for the moment to open our 2nd quarter tonight. Danno here on our first New Muses Monday night in a couple of weeks and thanks to all of you tuned in and sending birthday wishes over the weekend, you’re all the best what can I say. As to what just went up and came back down like most things do, let’s run down what just happened to your auditory senses right there...
Caroline Rose – Love Lover Friend (…a huge departure stylistically for the artist. This one has such a wait for it build up you wonder if it’s ever gonna arrive and then BAM! POW! ZOOF! If you’re not familiar, check out Rose’s last album Superstar, which was released just prior to the pandemic breaking out, which was a very tough break as that album is really good stuff and felt like a breakout moment.)
fanclubwallet – Roadkill (…this is the first single from the solo project of Canadian artist Hannah Judge since the release of May’s You Have Got To Be Kidding Me LP. This song in particular is about how men tend to put women, especially musicians on a very strange pedestal, idolizing them more as an object than anything.)
Pod, socials, etc…
Alright, so let’s get to a few more tunes prior to our upcoming concerts spotlight to finish the first half. Up next we have tunes from The Rare Occasions, Cavetown, and Matt Corby to enjoy or not, and then we’ll add the words and other stuff side opposite. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday evening.
____
Continuing along as the clock don’t stop here on the air as we bump towards the halftime buzzer. Danno here, what’s the deal Drop Tops (Kor)? I hope you had a good weekend and thanks for tuning in with us. We just wrapped everything up with the new music for tonight’s first half before we close with the upcoming concerts spotlight, so let’s read out what just went up in the space elevator…
The Rare Occasions – Start This Over (…this is off the veteran Boston band’s latest EP Attaboy, which just dropped in full on Friday. We should note that the band were formed in 2012 in Boston, but are now based way out west in LA. Good band to check out though, always interesting, and Attaboy is no different.)
Cavetown – Heart Attack (…interesting tune here one of the final notes on the worm food LP, which also dropped in full last Friday. This band if you’re not familiar is the solo project of Cambridge-based Robin Skinner, who’s been at it and very successfully since the age of 14. The album also features tracks with Chloe Moriondo and Beabadoobee, once again that’s Cavetown worm food if you wanna peep the whole thing.)
Matt Corby – Problems (…the first new music in a couple of years from the Aussie artist right here, and seems somewhat biographical as problems have certainly arisen. Corby says that floods in New South Wales and Queensland resulted in the destruction of the family home based their, so Corby’s life as a result was thrown into disarray and delayed the release of new music and understandably so.)
So, that’s it for the new music here in the first half, and we’ll close highlighting a big act coming here to Korea soon, and tonight’s highlight is on UK indie singer-songwriter Stella Donnelly, who’ll be appearing at Rolling Hall on Dec 6. We’ll close with a classic called Old Man off the highly acclaimed Beware of the Dog LP from 2019, and then we have Donnelly and Aussie Methyl Ethel teaming up on a more recent joint called Proof. That’ll do it for the first half tonight, but stay tuned we have our part 3 Poppin’ Off momentarily, then it’s into the Korean stuff to finish the show in part 4. THIS is The Drop and that is halftime.
Stella Donnelly – Old Man

Part III: New Pop

Selena Gomez – My Mind & Me
- This is the title track to a new Apple TV documentary that just dropped over the weekend.
- The byline reads, “After years in the limelight, Selena Gomez achieves unimaginable stardom. But just as she reaches a new peak, an unexpected turn pulls her into darkness.”
Q – Today
- The latest from the artist true name Q Steven Marsden who grew up in Florida.
- Despite the self-described unsearchable moniker, Q has built up a massive fan base, and we are sure this one will continue with the build. Do check 2021’s mixtape The Shave Experiment for more, which is very good stuff.
hemlocke springs – girlfriend
- Once I found this on my feed this weekend, I wasn’t really paying attention and thought it was another track off Phoenix’s new album.
- This is only the 2nd career single from the artist, getting a lot of deserved love from Pitchfork who wrote, “Springs conjures the classic image of a rom-com protagonist serenading a picture of her love interest, with fiery passion in her heart and a hairbrush-microphone in hand—but the overall effect is anything but cliche.”
Gryffin x Matt Maeson – Lose Your Love
- This is the 4th tune off Gryffin’s latest album Alive which dropped in full on Friday.
- The album additionally features collabs with Audrey Mika, Kygo, and MO, amongst others.
Masego – Say You Want Me
- This is a tune off the artist’s still to be named and dated LP, and the video celebrates the vibrancy of LA’s black community.
- As Masego begins the process of rolling out his new LP, he continues to tour the deluxe edition of his latest EP, Studying Abroad: Extended Stay.
BGYO – Game On
- Huge album drop over the weekend from this Philippine-based boy band who I know has a LOT of stans here in Korea.
- Be Us just dropped on Friday, and Game On is a very strong opening salvo to the record. Big up to their promo team for sending me an early shout on the record, which is available everywhere now.
Avril Levigne feat YUNGBLUD – I’m A Mess

Part IV – New K Cuts

ABOUT x hemo feat HWI YOUNG – Burn
- Interesting collab here as ABOUT and Hemo enlist the assistance of SF9 singer HWI YOUNG on this tune.
- This is the latest single off the duo’s upcoming EP which I believe is called Over Out, but no release date
Queenstown – No Matter
- This is an artist I know very little about and frankly, the non-existent bio is not helping on that front.
- That being noted, I do know that this is a standalone single released on September 14. But we’ll have to leave it at that.

NAMHYUK – Summer vacation
- The latest from Nam Joo-hyuk, who actually started their career as a model before getting into their nascent music career.
- This is an artist that is definitely quite popular here in Korea, but that is mostly due to the modeling and acting thus far. Good tune right here, although a little late in the year, dropping Sept 14 as well.

Meaningful Stone – Trash
- This is the latest single from Kim Deut-dol, who’s been steadily on the rise the past couple of years.
- Not sure if this is a simple standalone or a sign of bigger releases and projects to come, but a lovely tune no doubt. Check out 2020’s A Call from My Dream for more from this artist.

LEEYOUNGWOONG feat JAEHA – DON’T WORRY
- This is the latest from the independent Korean artist who’s been based for some time in Sydney.
- This latest tune (KOR) features JAEHA on the vox, and came out on SOMEDAY, a very good EP that came out September 27.
JAMBINAI x LUNA – from the place to be erased
- The latest right here from the rock and Korean traditional ensemble JAMBINAI, which just came out over the weekend. As usual, this is such a great long player and so unique vs the Korean music market we’re just gonna let it play out to end the show.
- As to the meaning therein, the band here is dealing with relationships and their consequences, and life going on regardless. This tune also heralds a big new EP from the band called Apparition, which drops in full in late May of next year.
