Why women over 50 are winning
in business right now.
If you were to scroll through TikTok
or Instagram or wherever you hang
out online, it is like everyone
is 20-something, and beautiful, and
curated, and the world is perfect.
But actually, while, our nephews, nieces,
daughters, friends, whatever it may be,
may be winning online with, with likes and
engagement and all those things, actually,
there's a quiet revolution going on
because if you are a woman over 50, you're
in one of the best positions to build
a successful and profitable business.
And the reason why is because
of the life lessons you have.
And if you're in that stage of life,
I wanna share why this is such a good
time for you to be putting down the
pedal on the... whatever it's called,
the accelerator, that's the one.
Okay, forget about the
perimenopause occasional brain fog.
And, you know, it could be that
you are in that stage of life, and
it is your moment to go for it.
So, 10 years ago, when I was just hitting
40, I remember thinking that I was too
old, and I felt like I was too late.
I was too old to do this, it was too
late for me to pivot, too late for me
to build something new, and I really
doubted myself, doubted whether I could
do it, doubted whether there was interest,
and really felt too old to do this.
But what's happened is that I think women
in their 50s in particular And men too.
So, you know, people who are
over 50 are finding that getting
a job is harder and harder.
And the way that the world is
aligned is that careers in kind of
marketing or creative industries
or journalism or TV production, all
the things that I used to sort of--
the worlds I would freq-frequent.
Ten years ago, I struggled to get work,
and that's why I set up my business.
But what I found is a lot of my
peers now are also struggling.
They can't get work in the way
that they did a few years ago.
I couldn't get work because
I came back from... I'd been
living in Asia for many years.
I was in China.
I came back, and I sort
of tried to get work.
I got a job.
It wasn't great.
I didn't love it.
And so someone offered me a
job in Iraq, and off I went.
So I went off to Iraq.
I set up a TV station, and then
I worked in the Middle East and
worked for Al Jazeera and, and
then came back, worked for them.
And I just-- And so when my son was born,
I knew that I didn't want to go back into
international journalism, but I didn't
know where to start in finding a job.
I felt like, you know, all the
doors had closed and, and, you
know, I was basically done.
And so that's why I set up my business.
And now I'm finding my peers are in the
same sort of position, and they are now
looking for those non-existent jobs and
thinking, "Oh my God, what am I gonna
do?" And the thing is that if you are over
50, you are not starting from scratch.
You have this amazing lived experience.
You have lived possibly in different
countries, you've experienced
different cultures, you've worked
in a variety of different industries
in different ways of working.
Perhaps you've raised a family,
had a career, and navigated all of
that, all of those people management
skills and, you know, dealing with
difficult teenagers or t-toddler
tantrum children, all of those things.
That requires a certain level of
patience and negotiation that perhaps
you didn't have earlier in life, and
you have way more experience than
you've ever had In your previous years.
And do not let somebody else undermine
you and make you feel as though this
bucket load of experience and wisdom and
the wrinkles and etchings on your face,
or maybe they're smoothed out slightly,
are there for a reason, and you're
gonna create the best business possible.
Because you've lived, you've
worked, and now it's time to
share your wisdom with the world.
And you also have that wisdom that
you are not gonna be just kind of...
There's the benefit of hindsight.
You don't have to chase every trend.
You've seen it, you've done it, and
you've lived through certain experiences.
And so it means that you might
have a pause button where
somebody else would rush in.
You might have an understanding of
profit and loss in a really strong,
heartfelt way that you might not have
at an earlier point of your life.
And because you've got that innate wisdom,
you've got that experience, you're gonna
make a much better business owner, and
that is where, you know, people are really
thriving because you know what you want.
You have your boundaries.
You don't-- You aren't there for
trace- chasing the trends or, um,
you know, just a- about the hustle.
You know what works.
Perhaps you've already laid down the f-
foundations of having a house and having
a bit of cushion behind you financially.
Maybe you've got a support network,
a partner who can help you.
All of those things makes life easier.
And so when you're setting up a business,
it really helps to have that springboard.
You know, when we hit 50, it's so easy
to be written off, to feel like you're
on the kind of career scrap heap.
But actually, we're just getting started,
and I feel more ambitious and more
determined than I have felt in years.
While we don't need to prove ourselves
in that kind of angsty way that
we did in our 20s, we are quietly,
determinedly going about our business
and creating amazing businesses that
have drive and determination, but
connect more because, you know, we'd-
we've been there, we've done it.
We don't need to impress
people in the same way.
So we can sell more honestly and more
naturally and connect much more deeply,
and that is what builds real business.
And we're appealing to perhaps people
who have a bit more cash in their pocket.
And so, you know, if you are a
stylist, people in their 50s have
more money to spend on clothes.
Or perhaps you're an interior
designer and people are wanting
to spend money on creating that
beautiful sitting room or redesigning
their garden or whatever it may be.
And so you have that wisdom.
You can share your knowledge, but,
and there's a big but, but perhaps
you don't want to work crazy hours.
You don't want to do it all the time,
and that is why passive income is so
good at this stage of life because it
means that you can set things up and
automate without being on all the time, so
you're not chasing clients all the time.
So it means you can live your life.
You can spend time with your
children, whether they're teenagers
or whether they are adult children.
You can have time for, you know,
elderly parents and have more
time for adventure and travel.
So, you know, it is really worth
getting those systems nailed,
and I know that can be scary.
You know, tech is something where you
might feel, you know, tech is not for you.
You, you feel uncomfortable
creating a reel or it's not
your thing, and I get that.
It can be overwhelming and scary.
And that was one of the reasons why
I really wanted to focus on making
Flowelle something for people who don't
like tech, who feel overwhelmed and
scared by it and all of those things.
I wanted to make it that if we build the
tech for you, so you have a simple system,
then you don't need to worry about it.
And then you can learn the system
once you've got a framework in place.
So it's just quietly working in the
background, doing its thing for you.
The biggest thing holding women
back at this stage of life is not
ability or intelligence, but it's
that confidence piece, the confidence
of, "I don't know where to start,"
things, "It feels too complicated,"
or, "I'm not good with systems."
And that is why I really want
to help you with the tech.
You don't need to make it complicated.
Let's build something really simple
for your business where you create
an offer and you sell it seamlessly.
So it's something that brings everything
together in one place, your booking system
for your calendar, your payments, and,
maybe your email, your website, all in
one place, so it's really super easy,
which covers off your experience, your
knowledge, your voice in a really seamless
way so those payments don't get missed.
You don't forget to invoice someone, and
you just have a system that works for you.
And then it's not about, "Is this too
late? Have I missed my, you know, moment?
Should I have done this 10 years ago?"
All of those regrets you might have.
You just get on with building it
because you've got a system that does
the heavy lifting for you, and that's
what's really, really important.
So if you would, you know, this, you
feel like, "Oh, yeah, this really
resonates," then send me a message.
I would love to hear from you.
I'd love to know what you
think of this podcast.
Is it something that you
feel like, you connect with?
And please share it with someone
who, if you know who is starting out
building their business and, they
are in need of a little love and
support, then please send them my way.
Thank you so much for being here.
, I love connecting with you and,
here's to living more, working less.
