Good morning and welcome. Today we explore Genesis chapter 18, where God appears to Abraham in the plains of Mamre after his circumcision at 99. This visit highlights God's compassion; He came to check on Abraham's recovery. Interestingly, this moment emphasizes the importance of hospitality. Abraham, despite his own discomfort, prioritizes welcoming guests over divine visitation. His eagerness to serve reflects a core value in our tradition: kindness and hospitality are paramount.
The three visitors, later revealed as angels, each carry a unique mission—announcing the birth of Isaac, foretelling the destruction of Sodom, and healing Abraham. Their presence teaches us that even divine beings respect human dignity and customs. Abraham's care in ensuring his guests wash their feet signifies his commitment to purity and respect, even amidst his challenges.
Through these interactions, we see the profound interconnectedness of faith, hospitality, and divine promise. Remember, hospitality honors not just guests but the very essence of God within us.
