What is Callum Walker | Figuring It Out?

Welcome to The Figuring It Out Podcast.

At 22, I took the plunge to go on the entrepreneurial journey and start a fitness business, 7 years later I’d been the nutritionist for 2 elite sports clubs and private coach to some of the worlds best sportsmen and women.

Now it’s my mission to show fitness coaches how you can put yourself in a league of their own, become the go to coach, and finally eliminate the self-doubt and imposter syndrome that's holding you back from building the business of your dreams.

This podcast will help you figure out how to thrive and conquer the fear that comes with the lonely entrepreneurial journey.

Callum:

If fear is the only thing stopping us from achieving our dreams and we only fear what we don't understand, then the antidote to fear is knowledge.

Callum:

All we have to do is find out who

Callum:

has the knowledge that we need to conquer our fears and achieve our entrepreneurial dreams. My name is Callum Walker, and welcome to the podcast that will help you figure it out and conquer this lonely entrepreneurial journey.

Callum:

Hello, everyone, and welcome to the podcast. Today, I'm going to be covering quite possibly the most frustrating and challenging aspect of being a coach, which is your client's alcohol intake. Your client's alcohol intake. Why is it so frustrating? Well, I think first of all, one of the main reasons why it's so frustrating is that we all know even your clients know that drinking alcohol is not in line with a healthy lifestyle.

Callum:

It's not in line with achieving your health and fitness goals in a long term and consistent manner. Now we also know that, especially when it comes to adherence, one of the biggest problems that we encounter as coaches is that clients succumb to alcohol. Now, the important thing that I'm going to kind of press on here, which is what I want to talk to you about today. I'm going to run through, just a simple way in which you can begin getting your clients to think differently about alcohol and kind of get them to a place where, you know, they change their alcohol intake. So this can really serve as a beacon of hope for you, to give you something to actually go back to your clients with to try.

Callum:

But I want to just, first of all, just press on the frustration of it because I think this is the true frustration that when our clients aren't making progress, when they're not losing weight, when they're not moving forward with things, and we all know that alcohol is the reason why, and we address their alcohol intake, a lot of clients will come back to you and we'll go, well, I'm not going to not drink. I'm not going to do that. And they almost kind of make you feel guilty for telling them not to drink alcohol. I don't know if you've experienced that, but I know for myself, I almost used to get to a place where I felt almost kind of guilty or I was treading around, you know, treading on eggshells, by telling my client like, hey, we've got to stop drinking here. You wanna get in shape, you gotta stop drinking.

Callum:

And it's nuts that we as a health and fitness professional, we as someone who is being paid to give advice to our clients on the best decisions that they can make, to get in the shape that they want to get into can be made to feel guilty for saying, hey, you know that, that bottle of wine that you're drinking every night, Probably a bad idea. And I think part of the reason for that is well, not part of. I think the reason for that is people's relationship with alcohol. What do they use alcohol for? A lot of your clients will be using alcohol as a crutch to escape the reality of their day, as a way to unwind, as a way to destress, as a way to socialize.

Callum:

You know, I'm not going to use this episode as a way to kinda get into the deep philosophical roots of why people consume alcohol. Most of the time, they're consuming alcohol because, you know, there is a hole, there is a void that they can't fill, from anything else than alcohol. But this isn't about them. This is about what you can do as a coach to really kind of address your client's alcohol intake because 100%, your clients will not make long term sustainable progress drinking alcohol in a long term way. They won't.

Callum:

They may get some, movement early doors. They may make a little bit of progress, but if they're drinking a lot of alcohol, they're not going to be healthy. End of story. I think one of the most refreshing things that I heard was from Andrew Huberman where he did a podcast episode all on the biology and the neurochemistry of alcohol. And he basically said the best amount of alcohol to drink for your health is none.

Callum:

All of this kind of, oh, you know, one is hell. No. No. No. None.

Callum:

K? Now am I saying you need to get all of your clients teetotal? No. Am I saying you need to go t total? No.

Callum:

But I'm not going to lie and say that, oh, a little bit of alcohol from a health perspective is better than none. It's not. But also a little is better than a lot. So if we kind of look at what can you do around this? Well, there's two things that I'm going to suggest.

Callum:

One, something that you can go back to your clients with, and two, in terms of yourself as a coach, something that you yourself need to stop doing. And it's something that you will be doing if you struggle with this, if you do feel maybe a little bit guilty telling your clients not to drink, that you will be doing before they ever become a client. So the first thing is I'm gonna start with you. And, I know that you're doing this because I used to do this. So I used to find myself with a lot of clients who, would just not they would not budge when it came to to me telling them to drop alcohol.

Callum:

And the reason for that was because of myself. What do I mean by that?

Callum:

Well, first of I'm gonna sneeze.

Callum:

Bless me. Sorry. We still got the hay fever bug. So it started with me, and it started from my marketing. What's my marketing got to do with my clients?

Callum:

Everything. Because your marketing effectively tells your client the kind of coach that they're going to be signing up with. That I know that Ollie is not going to allow me to jump on a call and say, oh, you know, but, yeah, I was out with the lads. You know, I just like to drink. I like to kick back, relax.

Callum:

No. Because from his marketing, he's a no nonsense, no bullshit. Like, hey, you want to get results? Take accountability for your own results and I will guide you in the right direction. I know that from the get go.

Callum:

So first of all, and it always happens around Christmas. And if you do this around the Christmas period or if you're doing this consistently, Trust me. Stop. Which is this notion of you can still get in shape and drink alcohol. All of this, you know, here's how you can still enjoy eight pints and get into shape.

Callum:

Now I understand why you're doing it because I used to do it. I used to think that doing that would make me attractive. That I could basically give people what they wanted, which was like, can get into shape without giving anything up. The thing is that's a lie. K?

Callum:

It's a lie. And do you know why it's a lie? Because if you do the same thing over and over again, you're gonna get the same results. K? Remember, your results are a direct consequence of your actions.

Callum:

So if your actions do not change, your results do not change. So us as coaches saying, hey, you can get different results from the same actions. That's just not true. Now, why do we do that? Because it makes us attractive in our mind.

Callum:

We think that by giving people what we think that they want, which is like, hey. You know, you can still get into shape and drink loads of booze. It's gonna set us apart. It's gonna position us as the coach who isn't restrictive, who every other coach is like, no. You've gotta you've gotta slog really hard.

Callum:

You've gotta work really hard. You've gotta give all of this, this, this up. But I can position myself as the coach who says you don't need to do that. Now here's the thing. We do that thinking that that is going to set us apart.

Callum:

It actually doesn't because every other coach says that now. That I literally go on social media and I follow a ton of coaches, and pretty much every coach says, you don't have to give stuff up to get into shape. It's all about balance. You know, don't don't restrict yourself. No, you have to restrict yourself.

Callum:

You have to change your actions to get different results. And we have to make that clear in our marketing. Otherwise we are lying, But more importantly for us, if you are promoting yourself as a coach who says that you can get into shape while drinking alcohol, all you're going to do is attract people who want to drink alcohol to get into shape. So if you're left with clients who are a nightmare to get them to stop drinking, but you're positioning yourself as a coach who says you can get into shape and drink alcohol. You set yourself up for that failure.

Callum:

And I know that because I used to do that, and I used to do that because I used to think it would make me attractive. K? But the only thing it did was wind me up with clients who didn't wanna give up alcohol. And then when that person is not making progress, when that person is not having success, and I know alcohol is the reason why, what is the one thing I can't tell them to do? The one thing I can't tell them to do is stop fucking drinking.

Callum:

I can't say that because they come back and go, well, I was under the impression when we first started, I could still drink and get into shape, and now you're doing a complete three sixty. Sorry. Not three sixty, one eighty. Like, that's not the deal. Like, I signed up with you for that reason.

Callum:

So first of all, in your marketing, in your marketing, ask yourself the question, ask yourself the question, am I doing this? It's the same with clients who aren't adhering to the plan. It's the same with clients who won't give up chocolate crisps and cookies. Ask yourself in your marketing. In your marketing, are you positioning yourself as a coach who says you don't have to restrict anything and get into shape?

Callum:

Okay. Cause if you are, you're setting yourself up for failure. So as always, I've decided I'm going to split this into a part one and a part two. So in part two, I'm going to reveal if you have ticked that box, if you have gone like, okay, I don't do that in my marketing or if I have done that in my marketing and my content, I'm going to stop. In part two, the next episode, I'm gonna run through what you can go back to your clients with to get them to stop drinking alcohol.

Callum:

How important is that gonna be? Never forget, if every one of your clients gave you just one new client, you doubled your business.

Callum:
