Speaker 3:I'm Hayden.
Speaker 2:I'm Ethan. And I'm Rydian.
Speaker 3:And welcome to After the Buzzer.
Speaker 1:Go and
Speaker 2:go. You know, to start this episode, I kinda wanted to change it up from sports a little bit. We had a sad loss at the high school, mister Stafford. You know, none of us really knew him that personally, but we just wanted to come on air and say, you know, prayers and thoughts to his family. And, you know, it's never never never good to hear or, you know, experience a loss in our community.
Speaker 2:Even though we didn't know him well, a lot of people did, and there's a lot of people suffering and grieving through it. So I just wanted to say, for you know, prayers go out to, his friends and his family, and he will be remembered. So back
Speaker 1:to the sports, the Heisman ceremony happened this weekend, and surprisingly, Travis Hunter did win the Heisman.
Speaker 2:I mean, it's not necessarily surprising. Like, we knew it was between him and Ashton Jenti, but in my personal opinion, I think he got like, Ashton Gentry got robbed. He was, like, best running back of our decade. Like like, pause like, he would have set the record if they'd if, like because he they he sat out, like, in a bunch of blowout wins because they didn't need him, and they'd play him so much. He needs to keep himself from being injured.
Speaker 2:Like so if he had played in those games, he would've he would've set the, like, the record, and he's 3rd in that record. And he he has 1st in touchdowns, 2nd in carries. Like, he had all these stats. Travis Hunter, I in my opinion, just didn't have. You know?
Speaker 2:Just because you played 2 sides of the ball doesn't mean like, it's about the best player. Like, Heisman Trophy is about the best player, not the most versatile player. You just because you play 2 sides of the ball, like, doesn't mean you deserve the Heisman because, like, he he plays both sides very, very well. And I'm not saying, like, like, he deserved to be runner-up, but he did not, in my in my opinion, did not deserve to get the Heisman over Ashton Gentry. Personal opinion.
Speaker 3:But Yeah. I agree with you. He wasn't even he didn't even, like, get his team to the college playoffs either. Yeah. Exactly.
Speaker 3:There's a Heisman winner who's not even in the college playoffs.
Speaker 2:Exactly. Like, Ashton Genti led, Boise to the playoffs, like, by himself, to be honest. Like, he he just he literally what what are the they've lost one game all season, and he is the only reason that they've only lost one game. He carries that offense completely. And then not like, they have a decent defense, but they're not they're not great.
Speaker 2:They have a decent offense, but, you know, they're not great. They got a pretty good o o line, which allows Ashton Gentry to do what he does best. But if you if you watch this guy, he's making, like, 75 yard rushes, breaking, like, 8 tackles. He is carrying that offense. I I don't know how he didn't win.
Speaker 1:I'm just like I do agree with that, but I also think the Heisman Trophy is also about being, like, the most impactful player, not, like, just for, like, the sport of football. I think Travis Hunter and, you know, Shadier Sanders who's was a Heisman contender, but they have also, like, really shaped, like, Colorado football. Like, before them, Colorado football wasn't really, like, a thing.
Speaker 2:Yeah. No. Yeah. That make that that is a valid argument. Like, they brought Colorado football into the light.
Speaker 2:Like, they they kinda made a name for Colorado football, you know, with their with their plays, and they've done a lot for college for college football, especially this year, like, last year too. But, you know, I've I kinda feel like just a little bit wrong saying that Ashton Genti didn't deserve it after what like, like, the performance he's put on consistently throughout the whole season is something, like, you don't see. Like, not only do you not see it very often, like, you just genuinely don't really see that very like, pretty much at all, especially in our day and age. People are just gonna keep getting better and better. Defense is gonna get better and better.
Speaker 2:People are gonna get bigger and stronger, better, faster, everything. So we're just not gonna see, like, this level of talent, this level of play pretty much, like, maybe once or twice again, but pretty much we'll never see this most likely, like, ever again. And for him not to win the Heisman Trophy, it just doesn't feel right to me. You know? But that's just my personal take.
Speaker 2:Like, I understand why people would take, Travis Hunter. You know? Because he's a he's a great player, plays both sides of the ball. Like, that's pretty important too. But in my opinion, Ash and Genti deserved that award, personally.
Speaker 1:I do agree with that.
Speaker 3:Yes. Ethan, have you been, like, keeping track of Mercer Island High School Basketball?
Speaker 1:No. I have not. What about you, Meridian?
Speaker 2:I actually have been keeping track because, you know, I'm on the team. But
Speaker 3:Yeah. Stay tuned for our next segment to hear more about Moore's Island High School Basketball.
